Egyptian Brutality Comes to America: Police Fire Rubber Bullets at Peaceful Protesters

George Washington's picture

This is not Egypt, Greece or Italy ... this is America:

The injured gentlemen is Veterans for Peace member Scott Olsen, allegedly shot with a rubber bullet.

This is another gentlemen allegedly shot in the face with a rubber bullet (his injury is above his right eye, while the injury to Scott Olsen appears to be on the left side of his face):

http://s1-02.twitpicproxy.com/photos/large/433190207.jpg

Here are police roughing up a peaceful woman protester:

And a policeman threw a flash grenade into a crowd trying to help an injured protester:

Some are calling this the "new Kent State".

And protesters from Tahrir Square, Egypt, say this is what it looked like there.

Vietnam war ended 5 years later after Kent State shootings.

Nazis will kill more. They don't give a shit. You are just a tax paying slave.

pay the low IQ power hungry police thugs to physically restrain higher IQ college kids is one game governing elites know how to play over and over throughout history.

I'm telling you, this is war. elite 0.1% bought the government, military, police, corporations, institutions. But they can't buy the ones they are screwing over because it is so obvious. California Universities are using tuition as revenue generation not education aid to public.

"It's not a trap!"

Contd. from nmewn and GF's 'Let's Make a Deal!'

"Just because a majority uses the ballot to pillage the minority doesn't make it correct. Just as it doesn't make it correct that the well connected minority uses power & law to take from the majority...the socialization of loss."

Isn't at all the same thing as the incredibly broad statement "No one has the right to anothers labour",it's more like two specific cases of injustice.

But sure, it's unjust for the majority to steal from a minority, just as it is unjust for a minority to steal from the majority. Stealing is unjust. If that was your point then we agree. Then again, obligation of payment for services rendered, reparations, etc. isn't stealing.

Curious: do you think eg. that landlords who have accumulated their property through inheritance are entitled to rent from the tenants?

OTOH something akin to Gold/Silver, no whimsical paper thingys, right right right. That makes two fundamental things we can agree upon (both mine). Not bad, not bad.

As there seem to be some points of contention regarding your contribution, I think it's still your turn. Try to keep in mind that you're attempting to present an example that you actually think I will completely agree with, not picking something else we'll definitely argue about; that's too easy.

Try harder to humour me this time.

"Try harder to humour me this time."

Try not to let your ego get in the way of us both having a good time here. I'm just as curious as to what makes you tick as you are of me.

"Then again, obligation of payment for services rendered, reparations, etc. isn't stealing."

This is going back to the principle (#2) I outlined earlier. No one has a right to anothers labor.

For any law to be just it must be confined to the parties involved. Generational theft is just as wrong as theft in the present. Contracts (which was a point you were making, which I deflected to get to the principle) are only honored as long as the partys are alive.

Reparations (which seems to be a continuing theme with you) is a non-starter...there are no injured/damaged parties left to accept reparations. They are all dead. And there is no one who was a slaveholder around to pay reparations. They too are all dead. If we are to go down that particular rat hole...all public money spent on the "damaged parties" behalf would have to be factored in to any judgement.

What is the value of the "damaged parties" food, clothing & shelter over the preceding generations? Of course, Britain, Spain etc. brought the practice to these shores, so what are they expected to pay, if anything?

I'm no fan of monarchs...however those monarchs & merchants & soldiers are all dead too. Their kin are expected to pay? Many of those kin live in poverty today.

Wealth is not a static proposition.

Oakland has been a shithole foe the last 40 or so years that I know. My sister lived a few years out there and I once visited. One day,I got run into from behind by a guy peddling a stolen bike with a sack over his shoulder. He had just robbed the building behind me. Cops called, arrive half hour later, and told us it was a waste of a call and not worth their time. Yup, that's oakland... Now, if it's time to bang up some hippies, mhell yeah, let's go!

“As we look to provide better customer service on the front end, some of our other priorities will have to drop off, just by sheer volume and demands for service,” Assistant Police Chief Howard A. Jordan said.

Dom Arotzarena, president of the Oakland Police Officer’s Association, said department officials briefed the union on the move for the first time last week.
“They are going to totally change investigations,” said Mr. Arotzarena, a former homicide detective. “And I don’t necessarily think it’s going to be good. They are virtually giving up on investigations for burglary and any kind of theft.”

I lived near Oakland when growing up, and it was bad.  It was a getto.  My impression of it in passing because I didn't go into it was that it was all poor black people.  However, there are a few rich neighborhoods in the hills.  I was surprised on the videos to see very few black people, because the population of black people is very high there.

I've lived away from there for 13 years, so it could have changed.  But I suspect many of the OWS protesters there are coming from neighboring cities, and are not from Oakland.

What I think most of these cops don't consider is that if things go from bad to worse, any one of them or all of them will be the first targets to go. And for those who think cops are better shots than your average hunter, you should go to a police range sometime. 2/3rds of the retired cops I know never even pulled their gun and are some of the worst shots I've ever seen. Your SWAT guys are far outnumbered by the types shown here. Now think what happens when a mob sees a patrol car parked in a driveway and there is only one person inside and they know guns are there. I think LEO's better determine if they are going to uphold rule of law or start the decline into lawlessness. Those I know who've served in the military(as previously evidenced on ZH) are getting pretty upset at what they are seeing from LEO's. I have yet to hear from our local Sheriff on these issues but you can bet it's coming up at his next open forum...

People should not be 'brutalized' for free speech and peaceful assembly.   Reality dictates that someone will eventually lob something; rock, brick, soda can to start it off.  If you are there, you have to realize you are putting yourself at risk of someone else's bad behavior.   The law is the law; and when the cops tell you to move under force of law, you probably should.

Shooting anyone in the head with a projectile is outrageous, even if a rubber bullet.  It is likely to kill.  That is serious cause for concern if the man's head was targeted.

Assuming the cops were the first one's to start the escalation is probably a foolish assumption.  Not because cops aren't perfect; but there are agitators in these crowds who's end is to actually start violence.  You are a fool if you don't know this.   The anarchists in Seattle abundantly proved that point in the outrageous WTO event.

Use of Weapons's picture

Three main theories:

#1 The # viewed often lags behind the counter because multiple people are refreshing it at once - for something that goes viral, this can crash the count early. After a few hours the servers catch up with the correct tally

#2 There's no doubt that Google ranking does strange things to videos - for instance, the "most popular / liked youtube video ever" is a Justin Bieber video... where the 'dislikes' outnumber the 'likes' by a factor of 3-1; its the number of likes that count, and dislikes aren't included (or weren't last time I read about it) in the tally

#3 Youtube certainly pulls videos - US up by 29% in 6 months http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/10/google-data-requests/  // UK government request up 71% http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15459123  -- however, before we all panic, Google claims that most of these number under 100 - Brazil is the outlier, due to #antisec / related hacking of Gov. emails that went viral - there were a lot of ISP / data redactions demanded over that. The 75 / 82 accounts in Japan are probably linked to scaremongering during the earthquake/tsunami/meltdown - in fact, I know that at least three channels were deleted on the fly because I was updating one as it disappeared, and had the others b-marked.

Find it here - http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/governmentrequests/map/

This doesn't include automatic Copyright Infringement requests that Youtube recieves or Private company / Corporate requests.

Oh, and #4. Yes, fairly sure a lot of videos have the stat counter disabled to prevent accurate representations of viewer support - there was a case a while back where someone compared the youtube viewing statistics of a video and the viewing stats of the same vid on an independent server, and the indy server showed approx x8 more views. Ok, yes, people on these servers will watch the vid more, but general linking to youtube is fairly standard by people these days.

The tea party got permits for their protests and left when the permitted time was over.  They worked within the system.

We are now past the time to work within the system.  The system makes you get permits to exercise your rights.  The system puts you in the designated free speech zone away from where people will listen to you.  OWS wants to be right in the way, and they should be.  They want to stay day after day, and night after night, and they should.
