Fly Your Own Spy Drone … For $300

George Washington's picture

By Washington’s Blog

The Parrot A.R. Drone can be launched and controlled with your iPhone or iPad:

The Parrot A.R. Drone costs $299.

The Parrot A.R. Drone can maintain stable flight at an altitude of up to 20 feet, and a maximum altitude of up to 160 feet.

More sophisticated drones can fly higher and for longer, in a more stable fashion.

For example, protesters in Warsaw used a spy drone last month to see what police were doing. As diydrones.com notes:

People tend to assume that UAVs will be used by the police to keep watch on us, but as ... video, taken by a RoboKopter of riots in Warsaw, shows, they can equally be used by citizens to keep tabs on the police. No need to wait for the local news to send a helicopter to get the aerial scene of a demonstration, just Do It Yourself!

Here is the video of the police shot by the Polish protesters:

(Here's what the RoboKopter drone used by the Polish protesters looks like.)

Drones can range from simple:

To advanced:

Disclaimer: We don't know whether there are any Department of Homeland Security, FAA or other regulations or laws prohibiting flying your own spy drone. Consult with a representative of all appropriate Federal, state, county and local agencies to determine whether or not you may fly your own drone.

you can only fly these things at a limited altitude, and not interfere with ordinary airtraffic, like helicopters. so if you bothered a police helicopter for instance they would get you under the same rule that they use to get people who point laser lights at pilots (probably) of course the police will shut down cell phone service in an emergency.

You don't need permission to fly drones. There is a limit to how big they can be, but I don't know it.With RC aircraft kits widely available you can easily build your own.Pretty cool.

You know, the big once can carry 10 ounce of C4 and can be flown into any building, and target and the one operating can be thousands of miles away. You install it with a adapter and at takeoff it disconects and boom you've go a perfect hitman!
Target in a office building 20 stories high you say? BOOM!!

Scarry shit

I should mention that if you have a valid amateur radio license you can use a more powerful downlink signal for superior video.A more powerful uplink is easy too, but then you would lose visual contact with the drone....

You could use a drone for an emergency FM pirate transmitter platform too, to keep your pals informed of developments.

But that would be illegal.

I should not have said that.......

Or you could keep it legal by using it as a packet radio repeater ....

But who could receive that other than hams?I guess a wifi hotspot in the air would be legal and useful however.

I am thinking apocalyptic here.RF wise I am squeaky clean these days. Now when I was growing up is another story.....I was very, very bad in those days.A 6l6 tri tet on 1500kc on a 150ft wire antenna......those were the days.

Now, I mostly emit in the dx window on 75 meters.Worked England,Ireland, Scotland and Italy last night with 100 watts.I love those guys.73 OM.

Cool. Protesters using the drones for their benefit and potentially outsmarting the riot cops. The elite establishment think they have all of us under the gauntlet with their fascist control toys. Now we're looking into their backyards in the Hamptons. Where are they going to hide now?

My father was into RC stuff for a time.He watched as some jerk harassed a hawk. The hawk decided f this and ripped the wings off the plane in one fluid movement.Obviously, the plane then cratered.HA HA!

We have peregrine falcons here in the mountains of WNC.I watched one in my tree in the front yard eat a bird it had snagged.Beautiful animal.Grisly eating habits!I used Leica 8x42 binos @ 15 feet from the front porch.Talk about fortunate!

It happens- a fellow R/C club dude once started chasing a bird around the field. It was guarding a nest or something and tried to chase away his plane so he went after it. The bird led him round and around then it darted through the limbs of a tree.

The pilot had target fixation and flew right after it.

The airplane lost both wings and stuck in the ground like a dart. We all died laughing. I love da boyds.

Basically, the FAA has once again (as of April, 2009) left model aviation activities (i.e. small, unmanned aircraft used by hobbists (ahem) and flown line-of-sight) to be free of FAA regulations [exempt] and be 'regulated' by the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics). This has been true since the 1930's or so.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/faa/recommendations.pdf

Many hobbists have flown (usually) radio controlled model aircraft over the years with cameras and now, video cameras - I have some WMF clips from a friends RC glider. I'm a former modeler now flying small private aircraft.

Homeland Security and your local police may decide you flying a camera drone to observe police activities is a violation of their right to do whatever the hell they damn please to you, and find - or write - regulations prohibiting it, but the FAA probably will not be involved.

I'm really surprised at the good quality video in the Polish drone clips. If they are controlled by iPhones or iPads, what's to keep somebody else from hijacking your expensive drone?

The Iranians, with Chinese help, waited until there was a zero-day exploit in Adobe PDF, and inserted a few files into a US Military drone control network, via somebody downloading a PDF document. Drones have a command that says "if you lose touch with base, just fly home". The Chinese hacked that, told the thing to fly home, then had a second hack that adjusted where "home" was. Pretty simple.

All good fun until somebody pokes an eye out. The US has had a monopoly on remote robot bombing of other countries...but just wait until the other guys get the same technology, though, and decide to play by the same rules the US has put in place (our rule: just bomb any other nation at will anytime you feel like it). Our own medecine, coming back at us, bigtime. Nice going Bush/Obama/CIA. How's that for a "more secure" nation? Oh wait, I forgot: they don't want a more secure nation, they want endless justification for constant fear and gargantuan military budgets.

"But they hate us because of our freedom". LOL

Thu, 12/29/2011 - 22:37 | 2020841 trav7777
trav7777's picture

yes, they really do hate us for our freedoms.

What is funny is how they do NOT hate all these countries across the globe with pretty similar freedoms.  In fact, from day to day, I can't really see how we have more freedom than somewhere in South America.

Maybe the narrative myth needs retuning.  Yeah, sure we have this document that SAYS we're supposed to have far more freedom than we actually seem to get.  The document is pretty clear on a vast scope of "Shall not infringe" language that is continually infringed.  I wonder wtf we are actually so free to do here.

In the 3rd world, you basically get left the fuck alone most of the time.  The government isn't trying to act like your mom.

We ostensibly have freedom to assemble, speak, due process, right to trial, etc., but in a practical sense, all of these have been greatly curtailed by the government.  De Facto, we're less free than a lot of places that lack constitutions like we have.

I saw that exact thing in Russia in 2004.

Over there, pay your taxes, don't try and change the government and the cops/military/apparchiks LEAVE you alone.

If I could have brought my weapons with me I would have moved there.
