No Mayan Apocalypse in 2012 … But There’s Alot of Other Interesting Stuff Happening

George Washington's picture

NO MAYAN APOCALYPSE IN 2012

Contrary to a widespread myth – as parroted by the History Channel, the movie and Internet buzz – and contrary to all of the hype from Mexican tourist agencies, the Mayans did not prophecy that the world would end on December 21, 2012.

Initially, there are many dates recorded on Mayan calendars which are well beyond 12/21/2012. The 2012 date was apparently only found on a single Mayan inscription.

And the Mayan elders themselves are having none of it.

As AP noted in 2009:

Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly “running out” on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it’s not the end of the world.

Or is it?

Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists.

***

Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan, says the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan ideas.

But you don’t have to believe just any Mayan elder.

Similarly, Ricardo Cajas – president of the Colectivo de Organizaciones Indígenas de Guatemala – said the date did not represent an end of humanity or fulfillment of the catastrophic prophecies, but that the new cycle “supposes changes in human consciousness.” (Translation).

And Maya Grand Elder Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj is the leader of the National Mayan Council of Elders of Guatemala, Day Keeper of the Mayan Calendar, 13th generation Quiche Mayan Spiritual Leader, the “roving ambassador for the Maya”, a founder and Grand Elder of the Continental Council of Elders & Spiritual Guides of the Americas, an Extraordinary Ambassador in the Guatemalan government representing the indigenous pueblos, and an international lecturer on Mayan culture.

While Oxlaj certainly warns about man-made problems, he says that December 21, 2012 is not the end of the Mayan calendar:

Contrary to popular belief the living elders of the Maya do not agree that December 21, 2012 is the end of their calendar. A new “Sun” represents the beginning of a new Long Count cycle in the calendar system of approximately 5,200 years, which they say may not happen for many years.

Indeed, some Mayan spiritual leaders are angryabout the whole 2012 apocalypse myth because it mischaracterizes Mayan beliefs.

MAYBE 2012 WILL BE A GOOD THING

New Age folks claim that Earth will be exactly aligned with the center of our galaxy on December 21.

I’m not sure whether or not that’s true. For example, a Cornell astronomer says that the Earth is frequently aligned with the galactic center.

But even assuming it’s true, is it necessarily a bad thing?  What do other ancient cultures say?

Ancient Yogic texts claim that the center of our galaxy emits some type of frequency or radiation which helps humankind to evolve.

Indeed, they claim that – the closer Earth gets to the center of the galaxy as it travels around its around the galactic center – the happier and more evolved we become.

(I’m not promoting the ancient Yogic view; merely pointing out that a very old tradition – which, like the Maya closely studied the stars and had time-keeping systems spanning tens of thousands of years – had positive associations with the center of the galaxy.)

DON'T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATHWATER

Although the whole Mayan 2012 thing is fake, that doesn’t mean that what happens in space can’t effect us.

As I’ve previously noted, the Sun affects many more aspects of our lives than scientists had realized.

For example – believe it or not – what happens inside the sun can change the rate of radioactive decay in particles on Earth. And solar activity could render virtually nuclear power plant a ticking time bomb.

In 2008, scientists said that the sun’s solar wind is at a 50-year low. Since the solar wind shields Earth from harmful radiation originating outside of our solar system, such occurrences could affect us.

The same year, scientists discovered that we were being bombarded by high-energy cosmic rays from an unknown source outside of our solar system.  More interesting still, scientists aren’t sure whether the cosmic rays came from a conventional object or something more esoteric … like dark matter.

And Nasa scientists have recently discovered that black holes – like the one at the center of our galaxy – have “pulses” of radiation, and that our galaxy’s black hole has at times put out much more radiation than it is currently emitting.

Nasa has also pointed out:

The Sun – in fact, our whole solar system – orbits around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Indeed, before you get too cocky in doubting that things further away than our Sun can affect the Earth, you may wish to note that a region of space in the Centaurus Supercluster is so dense and has such a massive gravitational pull that it is pulling our entire galaxy and all of the nearby galaxies towards it at the speed of 1,000,000 miles an hour.

What does this mean for us?

As I noted in August:

The science of the affect of space events on Earth is in its infancy, and that there are many fascinating discoveries in our future. When scientists understand all of the ways that the Sun and Earth [and other regions of our galaxy and beyond] interact, we will know alot more about the Earth and our place in the universe than we do today.

In the new age we will all intuitively understand quantum mechanics and 10-dimensional string theory. And I might even be able to decipher the posts on this website.  Q: I saw in a few of the links a reference to a 28-day solar rotation vs a 33-day decay variance cycle. Is that 28-days based on our frame of reference? In that time the earth moves over 28 degrees of its orbit.

I propose that every one of us here at ZH be-friend one of the tree huggers, and explain how important it is for them to shed their useless material belongings to prepare for 12-21-2012. This can be best achieved by selling it all -- the whole lot of it-- then converting it to Kruggerands and silver eagles, which we will be all too glad to relieve them of, in preparation for the next "harmonic convergence" near the center of the galaxy

New Age folks claim that Earth will be exactly aligned with the center of our galaxy on December 21.

And what exactly does that refer to George?

I've read a lot of astro-phys texts over the years, and two fairly recent Galactic phys texts, and I have no clue what that dogshit of a claim refers to.

And I seriously doubt those idiots who claimed it have a clue either.

Why repeat their crap here, as though it means something significant, coming from people with a barely functional brain?

You might want to look up the Planetary Jupiter alignment of 1983 for contrast with what's going on here GW.

However, that doesn't free us from the millstone around our neck and each must bear the weight until the anti.-climatic end where we never know it happened because we can't reflect upon it.

The working astronomers who use the Keck and Hubble are reading all these comments and pissing themselves laughing right about now. If they are really that bored.

Man, all you guys should study at least some astronomy. The galactic center passed us without a true alignment about ten years ago. The galactic plane is 1.5 parsecs wide, high or however you conceive it (go look the definition of a parsec up, it's akin to the federal defecant, but expressed in light years). When we do have an planetary alignment, we'll be outside of the exact planar center of the Milky Way. Not by much astronomically, but astronomically compared to us, alot. And when all these alignments occur we may have a gravitational effect, but unless your a gnat on top of a 1000 foot free standing marble column, you won't notice. I can fart harder than what's coming.

It will be nice to have silver and gold and bullets and dehydrated food, but the only thing we'll really have to worry about is what the new currency will be and whether or not we can trade all that stuff for it, so when we run out of the food, fuel and water we can buy some from the guys who were forward looking enough to buy food, energy, and water. And "I predict by grand hunch!" (Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!)  it'll happen, or peak, around the 1st to 2nd quarter of 2014. So we still got plenty of time to stock up. Unless, of course, you prefer equities and treasuries. Wait until you try trading those then. GLTA

Here.  It wasn't that hard to find.

It's called precession.  This explains it.  We hit the precise mid-point in 1998.

>>>Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and solstices one degree every 71.5 years. Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator (see diagram below).

The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997).<<<

the milky way galaxy is a concept composed of
objects, energy and perspectives. so it has
form, shape and size and these are relative to
the perspectives.
anyway, as an "object" with form it has a center
and an equatorial plane. due to its motion it has
a central axis of rotation which is perpendicular to
its equatorial plane which bisects it into a northern
and southern hemisphere. these two hemispheres have
different electrical domains perhaps? separated by
the equatorial plane. so this idea of hemispheres and
a dividing plane occurs throughout nature and even in the
human brain. what is it about crossing over from one
hemispheric domain into the other? and what is it about
the divide itself and the conditions that are encountered
there? another thing is that the solar system is internal
to the galaxy. the galaxy is composed of solar systems.
but... crossing this divide as we will occurs once every
24ooo - 26ooo years. that is the period of Precession of the Equinoxes
from the terrestrial perspective. from the celestial perspective
it is a little different.
imagine the galaxy is a spiral arm pancake. the thickness is 240-450
miles and the diameter is that of the planet earth, 7900 miles.
that is an enormous pancake. and the pancake is composed of mostly
"empty", energy filled, space. the largest objects would be the size
of coins. the solar system itself at this scale would be the size
of a dime, that being the the average diameter of the planet? pluto's
orbit around the sun, one metric for estimating the "size" of the
solar system.
a thin dime. and the earth maybe the size of a spec of nothing.
an individual human perspective or being, just nothing. yet,
the entire universe revolves around that little bit of nothing.
is composed of it in a way as without it there is nothing and
no one to see it.
this dime has an orientation to the pancake and undulates about
the galactic equator , the period being 24ooo-26oo years.
we are entering the golden age as we pass thru the equatorial plane
on 12/21/2012 , at 10 am the earth, the sun and the center POINT of
the galaxy will sit on this plane together. it happens once every
12ooo years or so but only once in ascension from the southern galactic
hemisphere into the northern every 24ooo or so years. and "coincidentally"
the earths rotational axis will be coincident, at the same angle as the
galactic axis while all three, the center the sun and the earth momentarily
sit on the galactic equator. that is the idea.
questions. this unique circumstance might provide recordable data
that might shed light on the mechanics of the universe. regarding
light, sunspots, magnetic and electrical phenomena, gravitation and
human consciousness etc. we would have to be knowingly looking for
things and making recordings of data to know. my guess is this opportunity
too will be ignored by this generation, sadly.
question what force/s correctly explain the form of the collective
galaxy and solar system. is gravity understood? could further study
of this event further our understanding of the forces, forms and mechanics
we observe?

And I bet not a damn thing happens or changes, globally, mentally or 'spiritually'.

Every few years astronomers with new instruments and techniques are discovering the Galaxy is far bigger and a much different shape and character to what they previously thought.

The idea that anyone can exactly locate and orient the galactic plane, and where Earth is with respect to it, on any given day is absurd.

It all comes down to how you define where and what a galaxy is, as to where this abstracted galactic plane 'occurs', with respect to Earth.

Thus the idea that it's a paper-thin division between two discrete 'hemispheres', is again a categorical absurdity (i.e. it's due to a particular subjective categorising and galactic 'map' delineation of boundries).

"Phil Cousineau speaks with BBC filmmaker Alan Ereira about his beautiful, sobering documentary: From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers' Warning. This poignant film carries a strong warning from a remote South American tribe that cautions us, the “younger brothers”, to give up our self-destructive ways and honor the planet, before it is too late.

After four centuries of seclusion, the Kogi, considered to be the last surviving pre-Colombian civilization, asked filmmaker Ereira to visit their homeland in the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern Colombia. From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers’ Warning delivers their prophetic message to the industrialized world. Seeing themselves as guardians of life on earth, the Kogi have a profound spiritual understanding of the bond between humankind and the natural world — a bond that, they insist, must be respected. This powerful film stands as an especially cogent and moving plea for ecological wisdom."
