Nobel Prize Winning Economist Supports Protests
Nobel Prize Winning Economist Endorses Protests
Yesterday, Nobel prize-winning economist Joe Stiglitz met with the "Occupy Wall Street" protesters to support their cause. Stiglitz said, among other things, that Wall Street got rich by "socializing losses and privatizing gain... that's not capitalism... its a distorted economy."
He is not the only high-level economist who supports the protests. Many other high-level economists and financial experts support the protests as well, including:
I will update this post as more economists weigh in on the protests.

Think he is some kind of "Rock Star".... Keynesian, so what else do you need to know...
Oh, he is a Prof at Columbia and Larry Summers got his ass canned as Chief Econ for the WORLD BANK...
This guy's politics are hanging out for all to see...
Nobel Prize has no juice.... Worthless as a Presidential Medal!
Carter Gore Obama LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Three stooges.
Who is this econ guy? You mean I have to go look him up on Google? Jezzzzzzzzzzz
augmister:
Nyet, but it is kinda' entertaining to look over all the CVs and see where their positions (professorially, business-wise, economically, "professionally/academically") are placed.
I'm trying to figure this out, studying, observing, might even visit "Occupy Boston" this weekend and see how they have enhanced the "Rose Kennedy Greenway". I'm for sure that the grass has a lot more nitrogen fertilizer than the DPW had planned.

{my next project is to find all of the PR firms that have just happened to show up on this "spontaneous" evolution.}
Where the hell are the politicans (minus the super lefy folks like M.Capuano-Sanders) supporting these people. or at least going down to talk to them?
We all know why. As George Calin once said, "These rich cock-suckers don't GIVE a FUCK about you...at all! AT ALL!
Didn't Obama get a Nobel Prize, too? Sort of cheapens the bragging rights, don't you think, especially after the huge success he's made of the past 3 years!
Tell you what, when Matt Damon, mathematical prodigy shows up give me a call, okay. Then I'll start to believe that this is all in and making huge gains on success. Sarc off.
Kabuki theater, bought and paid for by the forces in power. Dandling their unwashed marionettes so that the sheep will be placated because "someone is feeling fed up like me and doing something about it, so I don't have to".
if these guys want to help, progessive economists should renounce their profession and urge government rules to prohibit the hiring of economists by any federal agency responsible for regulating wall street.
then they should apologize and give any money back they ever took from banks and business schools., yea like that's gonna happen
The protests are gaining momentum and forming direction. Amazing to see it all unfold. Social unrest is something that the political leadership in this country hasn't experienced for a long time, unrest due to despair and poverty never before.
Current so called political leadership is not at all equipped to respond or deal with the group. They have no response other than trying to belittle the efforts. They may not actually understand themselves what is wrong, because the so called leadership is all from the same crop. They were all born with silver spoons, most of them anyway. So don't expect them to "get it" more so than Marie Antoinette didn't get it in her time.
There is something fundamentally wrong, we all know it. It hasn't been talked about, it hasn't been allowed to be discussed in the open. Capitalism is not for everyone and to expect everyone to always accept that a select few are incredibly wealthy while a majority of people is not even getting by is a pipe dream.
Associating Nobel Prize winners with the protestors is unfair... to the protestors...
screw these assholes. who do they think they are kidding? they are the same guys who supported economics , rather than common sense, as the basis for providing rulemaking and enforcement procedures on wall street.
economists are part of the problem. there should be no place for specialist gobbldeegook in the power frame work of fairness.

Good Luck to US *ALL!! (*= except the greedy, short sighted fuckers on wall street who crashed the whole fucking country, we need to fucking burn those fuckers alive! call it a witch hunt or whatever makes you feel better.)
HOW CAN IT BE ,,, THAT MEGAPHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED
AT PUBLIC MEETINGS OF THE PEOPLE?
IS THIS DICTATED BY " THE POWERS "
SO THAT NO-ONE REALLY CAN HEAR WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ?
TO ME WHAT I WITTNESS IS A DISGRACE ,,
A SIGN OF A PEOPLE SUBDUED INTO OBEDIENCE
WAKE UP ... USE MEGAPHONES ... SO WHAT U SAY ALSO ECHOES UP
TO THE BALCONIES OF CHAMPAGNE DRINKING FINANCIAL CRIMINALS ABOVE YOU
HEY! HEY!! we will not have the truth wafting up to the sensitive ears of the wall street bankers! that may disrupt thier train of thought on how to better rob the country blind, again.
No megaphones please.
It's better to approach the banksters from behind in silence.
High level economists...
Wow!!! exactly some of the masterminds of this mess
If Stiglitz is IN I´m totally OUT.
It´s still more worrying when you see people seeing this "endorsement" as positive
Here is another name for your list altho he is not an economist. Read Anthony Gregory's post of today at mises.org (go here: http://mises.org/daily/5746/Occupy-Wall-Street-A-Story-without-Heroes) to get an informed view of the philosophy that is motivating OWS.
GWY on the TSE just popped.
Bottom's in everybody back the gold pool.
Dylan Ratigan was there.........30 minute video

Divide et impera.
No one should be excluded or discouraged from protesting these douche bags. The 1% is universally hated.
Encourage this?
Also...kittens for all little girls and boys, no mean teachers and...damn did they really leave carbon taxes off the list...these are some careless lefties.
I was feeling a tad of 'sympatico'...I dislike having my skull fucked and my face ripped off as much as the next guy...then I see they support more time for the big O to continue his destruction of free markets...sorry they lost me....and we could have been friends...sad...
*pukes*
Demand fourteen: rainbows
Demand fifteen: lollipops
Demand sixteen: skittles-shitting unicorns
(Apparent) Demand Seventeen: a Totalitarian State
No. I don't go for these sprawling agendas. I do support whole-heartedly the idea of putting a stop to foreign and domestic lobby whores buying the govt. - which incidentally is very eager to be bought.
Nobel laureates showing up is a tell-tale sign this is a lefty event. But bringing out the ex-World Bank chief and noted anti-free-market icon seals the deal.
I think labels can be quite counterproductive.
Which ones?
GW did a good job posting links to the CVs of the various Economics Ph.Ds. You can confirm whether your "tell-tale" sign has any validity ;-)
- Ned
I never got past Stiglitz, with whom I'm (too) familiar.
Keen is no leftie. If you can't read past the first name, then don't read at all ...
Agreed. Keen is no lefty. He's also NOT a Nobel Laureate.
Maybe you should be a little more careful reading next time, eh?

XitSam
so you propose we allow the same people who got us into the mess to now control the economy?
I do not trust their judgment. They would probably be as corrupt in the administration of imposing tarrifs as they have been in administering the present economy.
I can just seem Jeff Immelt "yeah, tarrifs for everything...except what I produce abroad and then import."
Sorry but for me a true free market has a better chance at global distribution of goods and services in a way that meets most peoples needs.
I am not advocating the position quoted. Only presenting it as an example of the kind of thinking the occupy wall street crowd. Using the rich text quote/indent isn't very clear when applied next to the avatars.
In my opinion, the whole proposal is pretty whacked.
Being human sucks. There has never been a true free market. That's the hole in Austrian economics. If those who start with a little extra cash (we're talking an extra week's pay here) are given the privelege the Austrians say they should have, half of them will mess up, and the other half's grandchildren will own the place. The first generation will collude and scratch each other's backs. The kids will buy the legislature. The grandkids... France in 1300 AD.
The whole pie in the sky Austrian thing will never happen. The restraint on Jeff Immelt is a rope and a street light.
Would you have told the Wright Brothers to go back to making bicycles because aircraft had not existed prior to their invention? Lots of things that haven't yet been accomplished are worth working for.
How is it under your bridge? That's a discussion forum, not a final list. Picking a post from a left wing wackjob to throw in front of the right wing wackjobs here does not raise your cred with those of us with triple digit IQs.
Also, at least half that post is bullet-proof libertarian: "We good libertarians do not allow corporations to to externalize their costs by poisoning their neighbors. Therefore, we will help finance what teeny government we have with a countervailing tariff on countries that do allow this." Will the troll that claims it's ok for corporations to poison their neighbors please stand up?
Still fighting the imaginary war between the Reds and the Blues, I see. Better get on the freedom train.
<crickets>
Hey cricket dude, what do you say when the river catches fire?
I like crickets. Now let's talk about spring peepers. I like them too. I own a few acres of swamp. I had spring peepers in the 70s and lost them in the 80s. (Acid rain, bullet-proof) Got the clean air act over the objections of people like you. I have spring peepers again. I don't care how much it costs your corporate paymasters. They had no right to kill my frogs in the first place and they can go work at McDonalds before I'll let them do it again.
Too bad that cryin indian who was really a dago is dead, he could have shot a part two of his canoe paddling commerial in your swamp.
Hey bub, I like peepers as much as the next guy.
Especially with some chipotle and a side of organic pickles. :D
BTW, I'm not corporate, bub. Self-made, independent entrepreneur. Not a victim or lobbier for anything. Keep what I earn (net of taxes), take care of me, my family, and some in the community who need support. Don't try to attach your weak and uninformed labels to me.
Party on...
The self made indepenent applies to me too.
ZH just ate a long response, so I will summarize.
Why do you get to kill my frogs to make a buck?
Which flippin Austrian says that is OK?
Didn't realize I was dealin' with at two-digit IQ-er.
Go back to my post. The little ":D" is a demarcation between the sarc/joking comment and the rest. How you managed to (a) take seriously the frog-eating and (b) divine that I made a living from the same is a true 6-sigma event.
Maybe back off the booze & xanax combo, K?
Must be crowded under that bridge.
Poison your neighbors. It's right wing thing to do.
misclick.
GW, just like Charles Rangel, the fewer Nobel elites down there the better.
Nobel elites will support the cause, then co-opt it.
