Occupy Wall Street: Is It Really The 99%?

EconMatters's picture

By EconMatters

It looks like the initial public support and sympathy for Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is starting to wear thin.  From CNBC:

"Occupy Wall Street may claim small-business owners as members of the 99 percent, but from Oakland, Calif., to New York, many local enterprises are asking the protesters to pack up.

....the problem with the movement is that it is not hurting the big banks, but rather, it is hurting the small-business owners that are fighting to survive in a recession, says small-business owner Carol Bloom Stevens."

About a month ago, we already opined in an article that

"While we do not believe the Occupy Wall Street movement is entirely constructive timing-wise with the already troubled U.S. economy, we do understand the elements behind the initiative."

We have pointed out some of the shady market practice going on on Wall Street.  However, part of the reason for our "against-the-herd" view regarding the OWS is the observation of a lack of leadership and clear vision and goal(s) of the entire Occupy movement.

When an organized initiative is unable to articulate realistic goals, and solutions related to its cause, it is nothing more than a disorganized idealistic crowd leading to typically nothing constructive.  Or worse yet, if the crowd is big enough as in the case of OWS, "mob mentality" would almost guarantee something destructive would take place.

OWS has now escalated into scary violent outbursts in several metro areas with some protesters reportedly carrying weapons such as AK-47, while others resorting to destroying public and private properties and vandalism. Regardless how frustrated the bankster situation (at least that was the original OWS cause) might be, there's hardly any excuse for that kind of bad behavior that could harm innocent bystanders, while not only disrupting day-to-day lives of business and private citizens, but also bringing about a "riot contagion."    For example, if not for the OWS, it is doubtful the Penn State students would have resorted to rioting over a football coach who probably deserved to be fired in the first place based on reported accounts.

Another observation: As part of the 99% "worker bees", it is also very difficult for us to fathom how much free time these protesters seem to have to just camp out for days, weeks or even months without any concern in the world about family, work, and most importantly, the next paycheck.  So either these people are

  1. Part of the 14 million unemployed, whose time probably would have been better utilized going back to school or sprucing up job skill and resume for the next gig, or
  2. Part of the 1% with riches able to subsidize idealism, or
  3. The term "Professional Protester" may not be that far off.

Some people equivalized OWS to the Arab Spring. America is far from perfect, but it is not Egypt or Libya where an outdated autocratic leader/government had ruled for decades either.  The political and fiscal system in the United States most definitely needs an overhaul, and the entire congress probably needs to be replaced, but that's where voting and election comes in and what a democratic system is all about. Overall, USA is still one of the best countries in the free world despite its many problems.  That is, name one country in the world that does not have similar or more serious problems....just take a look at Europe.

While the cause behind OWS resonates with many in the nation, OWS is not the path to a better America either. The longer it spread and goes on in a disruptive manner without a clear and definitive mission, and solution, the more likely other parts of the society will start turning against it. Time to regroup before falling flat on its face once the red carpet gets abruptly pulled out.

Since the beginnings of the Occupy Wall Street movement it has resembled the throng of followers in “Forrest Gump’s” cross country run marathon. Just a bunch of aimless folks with no clear sense of vision jumping on with hopes of it leading somewhere meaningful. Heck, the only one in that chapter that came out ahead was the enterprising chap that capitalized on the “Shit Happens” bumper sticker! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVY8ouWnDyQ&NR=1 Fast forward today, it’s no wonder Obama embraces and with sincere empathy, identifies with the protesters. As neither seemingly communicate a clear message of stated goals or offer concise strategies with realistic prospects of achieving the desired and improved state of affairs. In keeping with pacifying the masses, Obama should immediately seek passage of the “No Crises Left Behind Act”, wherein as follows… 1. All protesters shall be given job classification and become unionized. 2. All protesters shall receive government issued “Mexican Backhoes”, i.e. shovels. 3. Effective upon passage the aforementioned and newly unionized protesters shall commence digging at strategically determined locations until further notified. Reaching the conclusion of this glorious shovel-ready project Obama and his new found friends of distinction can resoundingly chant, ‘can you dig it, baby?’, finally fulfilling the campaign slogan of “Yes We Can!”. And at the risk of being verbose, here’s a blast from the past for all the sheeple out there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhUlP4wiAQo

That article "bad moon rising" that discussed the generational differences in opinion on OWS appears to have more fact to it then I thought. Alot of Boomers think we should all just shut up and take it in the keister for 30 more years like good little tax cattle. Just like you guys did right? People should be more ashamed that they sat around with thier thumbs up thier ass while thier children are being robbed by financial terrorists.

We protested Vietnam and it got us Richard Nixon, Cambodia, and hundreds (maybe thousands) of POWs abandoned at the Paris peace talks. Oh yes, protest is so effective.

The difficulty is finding what works, that is not coopted, that benefits the people AND screws "the man".

The closest things to this I have seen are things like Max Keiser's "Buy silver, bankrupt JP Morgan" and the "national change your bank day". Non-violent, effective, less confrontational.

Add to this, possibilities like

  • samizdat network that is not internet based (DVDs, flash sticks)
  • flash protests that fade quickly - just to remind folks it is still important, and people still care. They just also care about small business
  • How about finding alternative ways to fund small startups, or products useful to real people? We are talking thousands of dollars, not millions.

Etc.

In my opinion, OWS is just another tool the elite are using to divide and distract the People, inciting them to violence so they can launch their pogrom. The elite know if they do not create the cover of war and chaos to mask their crimes, they will eventully be held accountable. Obama's endorsement of this 'movement' is revealing of it's true intent. Follow the money, the power, the players.

Some very salient and relevant opinions from some members, thanks.  Revolutions are not pretty or necessarily cohesively implemented and executed but rest assured that's exactly what this is and will continue to become IMHO.   There will be widespread violence within 24 months.

Anyone who opines that the current "status quo" can be changed with votes is a blathering fucking imbecile, period.   How many state elections have been purposefully "undermined" thanks to Diebold to date for example?

Constructive change is never the result of anger alone. What positive contribution is OWS making?

If it gets even 1% of people who hear about it to look further into something that they haven't previously known, or cared about, then that is a positive contribution to the education of people the world over.

Purely anecdotal, but the Arab spring piqued an interest in Middle Eastern history, and I learned about topics I'd never even considered prior to that. If it happens to me, then it can happen to someone else too.

People need information and impetus before enacting change, and OWS provides both to others.

I've attended antiwar protests going back decades and I can't honestly say that it ever accomplished a thing other than to give me a chance to let off steam. It seems to me that public protest can only be effective when it's confined to a narrow topic and targets a select group of officials who could lose their seats due to an electoral threat. But asking one party or one branch of government to clamp down on its opposite member is like asking a man to use his right hand to chop off his left.

"For example, if not for the OWS[???], it is doubtful the Penn State students would have resorted to rioting over a football coach who probably deserved to be fired in the first place based on reported accounts."

Sorry.  This is idiotic.  Penn State's problems with pedophilia have nothing to do with general disgust with our bank owned leadership.  Penn State students are maybe infuriated that the brand they committed to is now being tarnished forever.  I don't think these demographics overlap.  Except that the Penn State students, by virtue of losing an important illusion, may develop more in common with OWS, if this starts a process by which they question more assumptions.  What's this?  OWS pre-crime?  Ice Hockey fans riot in Vancouver as the Canucks lose Stanley Cup against Boston Bruins

"Another observation: As part of the 99% "worker bees", it is also very difficult for us to fathom how much free time these protesters ... have".

Time is what you make of it.  Do you ever ask yourself?  Maybe you should quit your job?  Maybe you don't have your priorities identified?  You talk about family.  What kind of world are you leaving to your offspring?

Well, never mind about that.  You just get on that hamster wheel and keep spinning.  Who knows, you may even move up a few seats.

I think I see a way to transition existing Central Banks (worldwide) from debt based money, to debt free, intrest free money.

Sovereign citizens around the world (Occupy Globally) demand debt free interest free money. Back up that demand with action. Stop using and supporting debt based money. If this is done globally, the debt based money system will end.

Governments respond by nationalizing central banks, and reduce interest rates to zero. (Aren’t we headed there already?) Create money to retire all debt.

We have now transitioned to debt free money for transactions and unit of account.

The term "sovereign citizen" is an oxymoron. ONly suckers and dupes use that term. The gov't is the entity that coined it. hping you go into court looking like a nut by calling yourself 2 contridictory terms.

The term “citizen,” as understood in our law, is precisely analogous to the term “subject” in the common law, and the change of phrases has entirely resulted from the change of government The sovereignty has been changed from one man to a collective body of people, and he who before was a subject of the king is now a citizen of the state. “Citizens,” under our Constitution and laws, means free inhabitants born within the United States or naturalized under the laws of Congress. United States v. Rhodes (U. S.) 27 Fed. Cas. 7S5, 788 (citing 1 Kent, Comm. 292, note

We are simply free men and women. The STATE can not be sovereign under any theory except for a fool's consent. Men and women can not give alligiance to a coporation trust or any other legal fiction. allegiance is between MEN.

First, every subject (as it hath been affirmed by those that argued against the Plaintiff) is presumed by Law to be sworn to the King, which is to his natural person; and likewise the King is sworn to his subjects which oath he taketh in his natural person: for the politique capacity is invisible and immortal; nay, the politique body hath no soul, for it is framed by the policy of man...

A body politique (being invisible) can as a body politique neither make nor take homage: Vide 33 Hen. 8. tit. Fealty, Brook. 5. In fide, in faith or ligeance nothing ought to be feigned, but ought to be ex fide non ficta .

The fiat monetary system is providing interest free money. That's the problem! It's why folks can't save for their future and it's what enables the government to steal from the present and future earning of the people.

Demand debt free money such as HR2290. (Using debt as money is insane.)
Stop supporting the system you rebel against.

The OWS better come to grips with Jon Corzine and what this well connected democrat did to MF Global. MF Global has comitted the ultimate fraud on customer accounts and has effectively lost their $600 mil. If this is not the rallying cry for OWS they are clearly just a complete waste of time politically. It might then be concluded that this organization is nothing more than the 2012 Obama re-election campaign.

My sense is that this the group's primary mission.

It's also written like shit and if I had to guess I would say whoever wrote it probably has parents making over 100k. Probably trying to get hired by Morgan Stanley. I hate the those fucking kids just like I hate Econmatters because I never wanted to homework and I sure as shit don't want to read about how Occupy Wall St. should relent and not draw attention to how utterly FUCKED up and debaucherous our financial system continues to be. What's next? SHould people stop posting anti Wall St exposition on the internet? Maybe I should just say "Hey it's cool that the average CEO makes 240 times what his employees do." Let's just keep our fucking mouths shut and not even give these jerkoffs a hard time. I found the following consumately offensive (moreover there is an issue with the subject verb agreement that even a monkey with wet AMD could spot while rolling a blunt) :"The longer it spread and goes on in a disruptive manner without a clear and definitive mission, and solution, the more likely other parts of the society will start turning against it. Why does everyone need thinks to fit into neat consumer friendly packages? THE PROTESTS ARE A LITTLE VAGUE SHUT THE FUCK UP NOW.  GO BACK TO YOUR MAC LAPTOP AND LEARN ENGLISH VERB CONJUGATIONS. IF YOU COME UP SHORT ON THE FUCKING RENT JUST CALL MOM DUKE.

Here is what I wish an article might read:

Posing as wealthy arab investors, Occupy Wall St. simultaneously takes over Goldman and CNBC headquarters and is deforming upper managment's genitals with blow-torches and acids. They aren't negotiating but FBI can hear porn soundtracks playing loudly to drown out screams. The assailants are entering all sorts of crazy fucking trades always in lots of 666. Supporters have come to cheer them on and throw eggs at the police waiting anxiously outside. The standoff is tense there could be some casualties and hurt penises.

I was speaking to you.

Let's try this. Suppose I spend 5 minutes a day sweeping the street and Dr. Jones works 20 hours a day for thirty years discovering a cure for certain types of cancer. Do you seriously believe that I am entitled to earn a set percentage of his earnings based on some "fairness" recipe?

Start here: People own themselves. So far, so good? If you own yourself and you perform labor then the fruits of those labors must belong to you, right?

Now rethink your wage "fairness" doctrine and get back to me.

Really? I ask questions to refine what an Occupy supporter believes and you say I have a perverse sense of morality? Are you familiar with the Socratic method?  I am not advocating in favor of wage "fairness" and I have no idea why you assumed I was based on what was written.  If Reggie had taken the bait, I would have made a point similar to the one you made. For example, if I have apples, flour and sugar I can make an inedible mess, or through skill, knowledge and work, I can make a tasty apple pie. Should both people receive the same wage?  (Double plus bonus points if you know where this example comes from.)

Free world? Yeah, right.  The corrupt bankers go free and the cops are free to beat up on protesters and the banks are free to foreclose on homes the "considreation" [contractual term usage] of which consisted of punching in digits in someone's checking account.  Let's cut out this free shit and tell it like it is...

when you make a statement like this: " For example, if not for the OWS, it is doubtful the Penn State students would have resorted to rioting over a football coach who probably deserved to be fired in the first place based on reported accounts." you sound stupid. I guess ows is to blame for the riots in chicago after nba championships, etc.
