Occupy Wall Street Launching First Nationwide General Strike In America Since 1946
Rumors have been flying for a week that the Occupy protesters will be launching a nationwide general strike. We have been biting our tongue waiting for a formal decision.
Mother Jones tweets:
From our reporter at #occupyoakland General Assembly just now MT @timmcdonnell: General strike passes with 1184 votes of approval
JackalAnon tweets:
STRIKE APPROVED FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY! GENERAL STRIKE FIRST TIME IN THE USA SINCE 1946!
(The last American general strike was also in Oakland).
The strike will occur on November 2nd.
One of the founders of the Tea Party – conservative Karl Denninger – supports the strike (and see this).
Occupy Wall Street in New York has also been considering a proposal for a general strike. And there are also rumors of a global general strike next year.

The Nazi's that I see at the moment are the ones in uniform.
22 FUCK YOU'S and counting!!
anyone else see that all the posts against the OWS'ers are are getting trashed...what does that tell you? Rise up.
It tells us that the OWSers own laptops and even smaller thingies made in Chicom sweatshops...so they're storming ZH. It's a compliment to TD and all the great work he does.
White people gonna rise UP!

Long leg-ed Mac Daddy!
It's funny.
A point in time will come when we will have to choose sides. We all need to be prepared for whatever comes. I'm prepared. Are you?
I don't like people like you and I won't be on your side.
Yep. Bring it! I've seen the other side, have you??
I don't understand what you are trying to say.
LJ - You are a POS that doesn't know the first thing about small business. If you owned one you would understand we are all slowly being ground to bits by the political and economic policies of the last 30 years.
As soon as you start the Commie/Nazi bull shit, it is obvious you have nothing valuable to contribute to this blog or society. Go back to the woods and play with your guns and tend your garden.
I say bullshit! i call bullshit on that! troll fuck wad no antisemitic nazi anarchy assholes have co-opted or joined occupy movements! SO FUCK THE FUCK OFF! if anything they've been PURGED. SO FUCK YOU!
take your hb gary 31 week ass back to fellating moynehan! FUCK OFF!
"no antisemitic nazi anarchy assholes have co-opted or joined occupy movements!"
Seriously?
" if anything they've been PURGED."
Seriously?
Or maybe they were raped and went home with their asses bleeding.
Wishing for this movement to be what we want it to be does not make it so.
These poor, stupid fuckers are little more than pawns being used as sparks on tinder.
The best (or worst) that can come of this is for some of the wheat to be seperated from the chaff, and draw the lines between those who are statists and those who aren't.
Then, the real movement starts.
As far as the strike goes????????? Yawn.
Let me clarify: Those who are there now are statists. Those who are dissatisfied but have no (or want no) association with the Occupy movement aren't.
Well colonel don't join. Rebel however you want to rebel and give peope the freedom to do so as well.
I don't care if you just annoy the fuck out of a politician or just treat your postman like crap and taunt him with when the fuck are they going to lay you stupid assholes off, or sit around cutting up newspapers and magazines and glueing landlord on pictures of tombstones and send them out to apartment complex offices you don't live in.
Rebellion doesn't have to be perfect. Doesn't have to take this form or that form. It just has to piss the hell out of people that think they can have too much say in the way things are.
You guys are idiots for trashing teaparty. Teaparty may not have been spitting the truth at politicitans in townhall meetings. It might not have marched and kept it up. But it rebelled.
If people are ever going to follow their own heart and learn their own truth they are going to have to have the freedom to do what they want to do.
It's like a goddamn video I watched one time about a ron paul guy bad mouthing occupy wallstreet. Complete with 40 fucking labels and classifications and flow charts. Ron Paul is about freedom and that supporter was about hijacking the power and using the way he saw fit. It was glenn beck batshit kind of crazy.
OWS doesn't all have to follow every program. If people want to risk their job and stay home then it's their goddamn decision to do it. If people want to take money out of a bank and they think that's the way then it's their goddamn choice.
So truth is there's not a damn thing wrong with how you rebel. And there's not a damn thing wrong with how I rebel. So just let it be.
Yup. The OWSers are statist anarchists, an oxymoron if ever there was one. The real revolutionaries are the old tea party farts who are all ready locked and loaded with a basement of groceries, gold and ammo. They know what's coming, not the 'stupid fuckers' crapping the foliage down in some park.
Yeah, "statist anarchists." Sounds about perfect. That's the kind of threat to society that can only exist in a place like the USA where none of the 99% have the most tenuous grasp on history.
And so we have at least one answer to the first poster's question about how long it'd take until "they" started calling everyone commies.
Or whatever.

Interesting footage from the riots/strikes that went on in the 30s.
Rioting Across America - The Great Depression
1. Unemployed can strike, but noone from tp 1% would notice.
2. Most (still) employed people can strike, and they will be unemployed before noon on Nov. 2
3. USA hardly makes anything... even if GM is forced to shut down the assembly line the management will only benefit from it...
4. For the strike to be effective, it needs to A) scare the market into diving 3-4 thousand pct., B) the law enforcement, the military and national guard has to join the strike - that will instill fear in the politicians and top 1%. Without law enforcement there will be chaos, and in chaos the top 1% has much more to lose.
How is #4 likely to happen? I give it 0% chance. Sorry.
If the US hardly makes anything then how do you explain this:
From The Financial Times
Last year, the US created 19.9 per cent of world manufacturing output, compared with 18.6 per cent for China, with the US staying ahead despite a steep fall in factory production due to the global recession.
TPTB count burger-flipping and God knows what else as "manufacturing". Also, every manufacturing job that leaves the US is coded as domestic for TWO YEARS after its gone. Etc.
Piramids. Number one building piramids.
Weapons.
Gotta give FMB the edge on this one.
And drugs.
And debt. And more debt. Etc............
Prison bars.
Denver international airport. That's a boatload of creepy ass GDP.
Damn Denver, You scary!!!
Does this mean the strikers won't collect on their state-provided benefits either?
Maybe they're post-99ers that have exhausted their state-facilitated transfer payments from the working folks and are now striking on principle. :D
cool thanks for clearing that up. sf and oakland are different cities fyi (& since your preference for precision is clear). people are mad at the oakland police for assaulting unarmed protestors from behind barricades. the sf police apparently reversing plans to clear the sf protestors ... for now.
fwiw i like most of your demands though i would not say they are particularly coherent nor do i expect they 'resonate with the population at large'. on the other hand, standing up for rights and demonstrating discontent with corrupt government is a patriotic duty. resonates with me anyway.
your analysis is condescending and unconvincing.
Social Security, Medicare, & pensions need to start getting cut, then the party will liven up a bit. Maybe after the Super Committee does squat.
-Yawn-
I have been yelling about a #NationalStrikeDay for 2 years...of course I already am on my .....lessee....2007 so almost 5yr strike myself ;) pay your taxes bich 53% ers. you get wars banks and shit thrown in your face sukerzHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH to eternity.......
Chillax nazi.
Nothing is going to happen. No one is going out on strike except a few dog walkers, and they're going to just walk. Without taking a solid position, OWS is condemning themselves to irrelevancy. No one likes that the SFran coppers shot protesters with rubber bullets, but its just a bunch of kids right now that do not resonate with the population at large because their position is a cup of water in a crucible made of sand. Now if they were shot with rubber bullets because they wanted the FED gone and replaced with a public system based upon a classical gold standard, prosecution of RICO violations by the FED and 2B2Fails in 2008, the packaged bk of the insolvent 2B2Fs, scrap Dodd/Fwank and Wall Streets Weapons of Financial Mass Destruction, pulling back the Supreme Court and America's sovereignty, the reformation of American foreign policy away from the Wolfowitz Doctrine, a simplifed tax code, and term limits; all to which end was to return America back to the 'public forum' in execution of Congress's constitutional duties,... then they might get somewhere. But right now, they don't stand for anything. They're just a bunch of kids with an altruistic mishmash list of demands. Sand does not hold water, and no one will go on strike.
Looks like you've touched a nerve with a few people. They are only junking you because deep down they know you are right.
Not arguing your points, but I think you underestimate the willingness of the American workers to take a well deserved day off so they can watch more tv.
I think the '53%' would agree and that would include me. I like the fact that OWS originally stood up and said 'Enough!' but as with most things these days in the MSM, they get tossed back and forth between parties, politicians, and ultimately are ending up as non-commital on anything. Even the 'published' list of demands that's been bantered about would strike a whole group of taxpayers as one-sided, socialist in nature, and another handout this country can't afford. Does OWS have legitimate complaints? Sure, we probably all do to a degree. I just can't get behind a 'movement' that so readily seeks a solution in bigger government and taking from the gov't pot when it's obvious the pot is empty. And while I'm not in their camp, the use of force by LEO's is simply dead wrong. They can and still might, cause this to escalate into the realm beyond Kent State and into Egypt. Sooner or later, one vet, one LEO, or one really abused gun owner is going to light the fireworks and it will not be put out very easily. I don't think the Administration's removal of military forces will have a great impact even if they do make it back to the US. At some point, the used and abused military apparatus in this country is going to say FU to the CIC and that's when you get LEO and military in a really bad standoff. I'm hopeful that things end peaceably but I'm preparing for the worst nonetheless...
I've noticed a lot less hand-wringing by the media about "what they want", or their "organization". The more the movement is looked into, the more it becomes obvious.
RR, I was talking to a nice old woman today who had married a Californian Soldier after WWII, and lived with him in Oakland for several years, and worked for the USN. So I told her about OWS protests, and the increasing near 'riot' mentality, and then the violent police crackdown and reaction, and she was a bit disturbed by this, and asked, "oh my, did they arrest any of them then?".
So I told her about how brutal the police responses had became, and how many were being arrested.
And she said, "oh, thank goodness for that!".
It was an eye-opener.
People like her simply don't have any clue what it's about, or why it matters, and if the police were to shoot a hundred of the OWS in cold-blood, I doubt she would feel any differently at all.
It will be a long time before people get it - expect a protracted very violent and grossly unfair battle.
I doubt a strike will work but what they're doing now is working. Nightly video of ex-marine vets getting their heads crushed will move the sleepers like nothing else. Sadly in will take some martyrs. Even the people who think the OWS crowd are a bunch of leftists will be pissed by the brutality, at least any who are real Americans. If they can keep the movement going for another six months they win. If they wimp out because it gets cold they lose.
Did Barry Soetero send you to troll?
All In A Days Work For Obummer-Bots
White House interns troll all the blogs looking for negative comments about Obama Bin Lyin', Valerie "Bitch-O-Matic" Jarrett and Michelle "I'll Kick Your Ass Barry" Robinson-Soetoro...
I'll be striking.
Denninger will be striking.
The marine who was shot in the head by the Oakland police thugs is not some kid--he's a decorated marine home from two tours of duty in Iraq, now working as a software developer.
If you have a job where you really can't strike, you're supposed to refrain from as much other economic activity as possible on that day: don't eat at a restaurant, don't shop, don't pay anyone for anything on that day.
He wasn't decorated anything...get your fucking facts straight/
I thought he has three Purple Hearts from Vietnam...oh,wait, that was a different dude.
I think I'll place a large order of stuff from each of my vendors to offset all 200 of you "don't pay anyone that day-ers". :D
I feel like I'm "occupying" this fringe post. Thanks, GW!
So, Big, Mean Mary in the Green Beret...you're going to order some extra lace doilies and some nice perfume from your vendors that day. Good for you! You go girl!
Most people who still have jobs cannot risk them in today's economy by going on strike, especially since most of us have no union support.
I think the part about refraining from economic activity will be easier for most supporters to do, so I think the no spending part of the show of support for OWS needs to be publicized more, and maybe last longer than just 1 day.
I am definately in on no spending for next Wednesday.
