Occupy Wall Street Launching First Nationwide General Strike In America Since 1946
Rumors have been flying for a week that the Occupy protesters will be launching a nationwide general strike. We have been biting our tongue waiting for a formal decision.
Mother Jones tweets:
From our reporter at #occupyoakland General Assembly just now MT @timmcdonnell: General strike passes with 1184 votes of approval
JackalAnon tweets:
STRIKE APPROVED FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY! GENERAL STRIKE FIRST TIME IN THE USA SINCE 1946!
(The last American general strike was also in Oakland).
The strike will occur on November 2nd.
One of the founders of the Tea Party – conservative Karl Denninger – supports the strike (and see this).
Occupy Wall Street in New York has also been considering a proposal for a general strike. And there are also rumors of a global general strike next year.

Most people will just work around it and do thier buying the day before or day after.
Let's really have an impact and target specific commodities, specific sellers.
For instance, if you really want to fubar the suuply chain, no one buy Exxon gas for a week.
Next week, no one buy at Safeway.
The lobbyists will be on the hill faster than coons on convicts.
Say, what?
Hate to say it, but you are right about targeting specific companies for a full week at a time.
I will work an extra 5 minutes to make up for your slacking asshole
Do you blokes understand the difference between deferral and abstinence? Only one makes a difference, and the "no spending next _______" ain't the one.
MK,
First off, I am not a "bloke", I am a Southern lady. And since I highly doubt that you are British, referring to gentlemen as "blokes" is rather affected.
Now as to your assertion that not spending for a day will make no difference, you are forgetting that it will send a message.
P.S. If you don't believe the strike will make a difference, why are you wasting your time spewing posts everywhere that are against it?
"Bloke" is a term more common in the Australian and South African colloquial than in the UK.
I thought all you blokes and sheilas celebrated different perspectives. Or is that just a veil like "peaceful protesters?"
I'm not wasting my time (which I get to decide - not you), I'm trying to understand what it is these protests are actually about. As I can tell so far, they are incoherent. The only objective achieved so far has been to escalate unrest and publicize it. The notion of some substantive "message(s)" getting through is faint at best.
But carry on, Ms. Dammit.
Not spending for a day won't send a message, just like not buying gas for a day would never send a message.
A Southern lady, however, is a good thing.
Defer for a week at it affects the sales stats. A 1% drop matters.
Cite your sources, DF. Otherwise, you are just spouting pablum.
Edit: credible sources.
"But right now, they don't stand for anything"
You are right about the things that need change-- but very mistaken in characterizing OWS as just a bunch of kids who don't stand for anything but an "altruistic mismash." The issues that are important to you are also important to OWS and will be advanced in due course. It takes time to bake a cake.
What you say is correct, but they don't have the time to figure it out. I've seen this coming for over 40 years, the last two of which I've written a book, New American Revolution: The Constitutional Overthrow of the United States Government", which will be out in November. In it, I summarize the points I laid out in my rant that you were so kind to comment upon. Hopefully, it will give some direction. I believe people will find it somewhat of a surprise.
N A R @19:26
I posted this above a bit:
A strike isnt all that is planned. I was at Occupy ______ monday evening. Was talkin to two guys with armbands on [more authority?]. One said to the other that "there is a constitutional convention planned for July 2012." The other one said back that he heard the same thing. I said "You mean to alter it?" They said "no, a total new one."
I wanted to get in the line to speak but thought not yet!
TeaParty and 99% should cooperate on honest money and honest markets. Otherwise its the same old divide and conquer. When Glass Steagal is brought back, pillage is clawed back and banksters are in the slammer- then lets all go back to fighting each other over abortion, marriage, entitlements, small govt.
Will it bethe same old thing like the last several thousand years or "different this time!" We should know by 2020. Why 2020? Cuz Marty Armstrong says so! Marty da man.
I'm sure the whole world is waiting in breathless anticipation for your "book" to come out.
Have you been taking your medication?
Actually its funny you should ask. I have high blood pressure and I do take my 'medication'. And while I know it is a lot to ask, I would still request your patience and wait for the book to come out. I haven't been wasting my time since 1968, and certainly not the last 2, to 2 1/2 years. But let the book judge me, my sincerity, and my competence. It may surprise you.
And it's far more than young people who are interested and involved in this movement. The young are more willing to put themselves physically in the line of fire, but there are millions of Americans who support them. I know baby boomers who take bottled water, food and other supplies down to the protesters every week. Those like Mr. "American Revolution" who dismiss OWS simply because it doesn't address in detail their personal axe-grinding are missing the point.
A national general strike is a great idea because it requires nothing but to stay home -- no going into the streets to get your head smashed by the cops. The challenge is to get enough people on board to make it meaningful. This first attempt might not work that well but eventually it will happen, and believe me, if the workers can really stop the gears for even one day it will definitely get the attention of TPTB.
I simply pointed out the cause of their failure. I support the revolution and have since it began in 2008. The book I've written should shed some light on a comprehensive direction that is acceptable to all Americans. Try and keep an open mind, and when you read, don't overlay your initial response until you've given what's been said a chance. The only exercise your getting is jumping to conclusions. "Mr. American Revolution",... thank you, I like that. You won't mind if I use that, do you? No,... you are too kind.
Your original post above rings true. The OWS people threw a protest, and the wrong crowd showed up (by and large). The widespread perception is that the bulk of them - and apparently those behind the scenes - want a larger and even more coercive government. That runs contrary to the wishes of the bulk of the public, which wants sanity and order.
Your analogy of water and sand is sound. There's nothing solid about the movement which might allow the public to support it. I'll say it again: Ron Paul should produce a video directed at OWS protesters and those sympathetic to them. 90% of them would watch it, and it might move the thing in the right direction.
Ha, General Strike in the US. 'Ts been a long time coming. But it was about time. I wonder how long until they accuse the strikers for being commie and anti american... And after that you'll get a Tea Party Nation counter-rally burning copies of Salt of the Earth...
"they" will not be accusing the strikers of anything, because "they" will be pleased to see the effects that their agitators have secured through purposeful misdirection of the outrage of the people against the predations of the kleptocracy-owned State power.
Nothing new in this script at all...two hundred years later -
Mass protest is a red herring. "We" are all outlaws now. There is no union of outlaws, only the single minded resistance to injustice and injury that lurks deep in the heart of the true dissenter who no longer has anything left to lose. Eastwood got it all down right in "Josey Wales." Study the prophecy.
Trust nothing nothing nothing that comes from the media...'alternative' or otherwise...choose your few companions with great care, for they will be your sole avenue to successful resistance, not a crowd of unwitting dupes.

We HAVE a Constitution. Just follow it.
I will say to you now, and it is a postion that I will maintain; never call a Constitutional Convention. I adher to non-violence, it is our greatest friend. But I know the moment a Constitutional Convention is called it is best that you buy guns and ammunition, because you are going to need them. Nothing good will come of that. A Constitutional Convention will serve no purpose but to restructure the tyranny we have today, only 10 fold. They know not what they ask. It is much simpler to roll back that oligarchy that rules America today by the reformation of our government to it's original tenents of the 'open forum', within the return of the context of the Constitutional Duties of Congress, as they were originally designated in 1789. No, a Constitutional Convention will create divisions within America that can never be healed, and that are not necessary to the restoration of the open forum in government, which is that basis of government that we all seek. This is at the crux of the issues we all seek to address, correct, and cause more than reform, but less than revolution. For a revolution we have, and no thinking one would consider the violent alternative. It is unimaginable and horrific, as revolution leaves no one untouched and by its fulfillment guarantees tyranny.
Totally agree...should have made that clear in my comment...just return to the Constitution we have.
If the issue is a corrupt and broken system (Politicians bought and paid for so that Congress represents the interests of Corporations not the people who elected them, supposedly to represent them) then isn't that something that all sides can agree with? That, of course, is why the MSM have been trying to paint is left/right wing loons, depending on which Corporate masters they represent. The problem is not just Wall Street but that "We the people" no longer have proper representation. The problem is as much with DC and the Corporatocracy in general, but Wall Street conveniently illustrates the excesses of the corruption and crony capitalism.
Unless the system is fixed, the future is not bright for the citizenry of the United Corporatocracy of America.
There's only one corporation: The Federal Reserve. They have bought the media, education, Congress, Courts, the goon squad shooting the vetrans, and all means of control.
You're half right. Did you forget about the big unions? You don't think the the Dems depend on the SEIU, Teamsters, UAW, AFL-CIO, etc. for contributions?
I've posted this before, but apparently you missed it. In Canada, previous governments, both Liberal and Conservative, have forbidden corporations and unions from contributing to political parties PERIOD. No easily evaded limits, no PACs or Super PACS, no exceptions - nothing. Individuals are limited to $1,100 per year, to a party or candidate or a combination of both. No giving $1,100 to three hundred candidates.
Until you reform your campaign finance rules, your country is doomed to be controlled by corporate and union interests, and not the interests of the individual. All the old spy novels had the theme "follow the money"; same thing is true in real life.
Youre gettin warm Frank. If Pols didnt have to advertise on TV, Pols wouldnt need 50 mil to run for Congress. We can ban campaign commercials till Dec 2012 on TV as a trial of mine thesis!
Yep, plenty for the TeaParty and OWS to agree on:

... and plenty to disagree on. The true followere of the TeaParty will never agree with the true leaders of the FleaParty.
PS. I follow neither. Demonstrations are pointless distractions for the media to spin. Voting is simply adding your comment to the "Suggestion Box for Slaves".
SECEDE NOW!!
i dont think so
Brilliant observation!
Green arrow for you my man (or lady).
Who is "they"? The invisible boogey man "they"? The 1%? Hide under your bed.
Swamp - technically "they" are not "us".
"They" are the other side.
Is there something difficult about this?
The difficulty seems to be your obtuse mind cannot follow a thread. ADD?

Who is they? Can't you follow a thread either?

What happened to the math question to post? Too many dummies posting who cannot follow a thread, read, or write a complete sentence.
Some Tea Party people are supporting the strike, more will as OWS reaches out.
@ Moe Gamble
Well, we'll see on November 2. I doubt that anything will happen.
I would love to see what General Strike looks like here.
Pass the word along that we could all take $500 from our ATMs that day. THAT would get their attention too. And simple for anyone to do.
Wonder what I should do? Don't have an ATM card -- never have had one. I do carry a nice money clip with a replica $20 Kellogg gold piece nicely mounted in it, however.
You know. i can't even remember the PIN number on my atm card. I used to use it all the time. When I went goldbug it's like that was so fuckng stupid. Your safe or hidey hole should be your atm.
Dear Moe, TeaParty is spelled as one word. Why don't you tell us why none of you people have or will ever have a meaningful existence? The only way to a fulfilling life is through the exercise of daily hard work. Think about it. What will you people do when the snowflakes start falling? It's a cold hard world out there and 79% of the American Public is beginning to lose their patience, with both you and your bankster enablers. GFY Better yet, go find a job somewhere and learn how to be part of the solution
Here's my response to your post, please take the time to watch it and let it fully sink in.

After more than 3 re-reads of your post I feel my IQ melting away.
Three rereads? Because I suggested he go find himself? Why do you people have to resort to insults? Is it because you realize deep down your movement has been co-opted by forces beyond your control? A thousand here, one hundred fifty there, you have no meaningful support and it will soon be very cold. In a way, I feel sorry for you because you are blinded by your hatred and won't listen to your better angels. I have worked hard for the last 45 years to be the debt free American I am today. It is not my problem if you are either jobless, underwater in your mortgage, stressed out with a huge college loan and a liberal arts degree and jobless, or whatever other personal tragedy you have inflicted on yourselves. I am giving some good advice to those who may be considering stepping up the level of destruction and mayhem. There is something called the silent majority in this land that has about had their fill with this selfishness and they just might not be as understanding as those police officers you all so revile. Walk away, go home, and call it a day.
@Classiclib:
Heh, heh, heh,...
You said "you people"
Heh, heh, heh...
I don't think you have ever camped in the winter. Cold is the least of their problems.
Cold is not a problem at all. Everything burns.
Peter Schiff at OWS saying he is the one percent...
http://reason.com/blog/2011/10/27/peter-schiff-at-occupy-wall-st
Maybe they just need better guidance.
Maybe they need to figure it for themselves.
This "system" has fucked people in very specialized customized for your fucking over pleasure way. The people need to express that through not only one life time but many.
Here's a guy in australia giving the queen a libra lesson on equality under these harsh pluto transits which are bringing out the "other" plutocrats.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/man-charged-exposing-himself-queen-toured-12521...
He's an example of why I do not like the 1 to 99% references. This isn't about being wealthy. It is about corporatism of course. Mr. Schiff is therefore NOT part of the problem. He knows that of course, and I see in the one video where he tries to explain it.
Too many conservatives are falling for the trap that this is a poor against the rich argument. It is not. The true argument is between capitalism and corporatism. As the bankster ponzi scheme collapses and America turns into a third world nation because of it, perhaps the Tea Party and OWS'ers will figure it out and finally join forces.
