A new Anonymous statement to the media regarding a DDOS attack set forth to take place October 10th.

DDOS information is annotated.

TRANSCRIPT:
_________________

Greetings, Institutions of the Media.

We are Anonymous.

The events transpiring within Wall Street have caught our eye.

It seems that the government and Federal agencies enjoy enforcing the law a little bit too much. They instate unjust laws as mindless automatons, blindly following orders with soulless precision.

We witness the Government enforcing the laws that punish the 99% while allowing the 1% to escape justice, unharmed, for their crimes against the people.

We have observed this same Government failing to enforce even the minimal legal restraints of Wall Street's abuses. This Government who has willingly ignored the greed at Wall Street has even bailed out the perpetrators that have caused our crisis.

We will not stand by and watch the system take over our way of life.

We the people shall stand against the government's inaction.

We the people will not be witnesses to your corruption and ill gotten profits.

We will not labor for your leisure.

We will not assist you in any way.

This is why we choose to declare our war against the New York Stock Exchange. We can no longer stay silent as the population is being exploited and forced to make sacrifices in the name of profit.

We will show the world that we are true to our word. On October 10th, NYSE shall be erased from the Internet. On October 10th, expect a day that will never, ever, be forgotten.

Vox Populi, Vox Anon.
The Voice of The People is The Voice of Anonymous.
We are Legion. We are the 99%.
We do not forgive. We do not forget.
Wall Street: Expect us.

very, very suspicious them targeting wall street, an attack on the NYSE plays right into the federal govts hands while doing no damage to them. it helps no one as the NYSE is already sinking like the titanic anyways and all this attack would achieve is not allowing us to watch it go under.

an attack on a major civilian institution will strengthen the feds position on "cyber terror" and will pave the way for further internet censorship, control and regulation all in the name of security and safety.

I would like to believe anon is legit but this casts to much doubt..

I call false flag.

The PSN network is built of 110 million devices built by a single manufacture that knows everything about it's own systems, connected through roughly 45000 layer 3 devices, 3400 (ish) layer 3 security perimeter devices to the 16 football fields of equipment to play games with kids between the ages of 10-22.  Top notch everything engineering, top tier technology and literally one of the largest defense system manufacturing companies in the world.

NYSE is a mix of fibre, copper (cat5 and Token ring) running with a couple hundred layer 3 security devices, an underfunded IT staff connected to a billion clients of all shape and size with no standards other than a browser inferface and some really sloppy SSL implimentation.

The PSN network was down until it was let back up.  NYSE doesn't have an ice cubes chance in hell.

Taking down a webpage is worthless. Hacking a campaign site is worthless.

Now if these guys had access to the secondary network through a major university then they could cause some damage. The general internet isn't even used by people that really matter anymore. Top research universities have had their own networking system for years decoupled from the consumer system.

One of my friends who was a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon when I was there had a keycard for the elevator in the computer science and engineering building. I asked him what it was for one day and he said, I can't tell you what I am working on, but I'll just tell you that the elevator says there are two underground floors of this building. That isn't exactly correct. There was also the land bridge between buildings where no snow would ever accumulate. That was where the massive servers connected to the university research backbone were located.

The stock exchange is safe and the military/industrial/university network complex is safe. Unless Anon has people willing to attack through that. Somehow I doubt it.

I don't really understanding how taking down the NYSE web site is going to be much more than a one (holi)day annoyance for the Wall Street types.  The big shops with all the HFT algos all have a direct line to the exchange, until you figure out a way to hack those, the rest of this just looks a bit trivial.

Yea, knocking off the public page isn't much but it does make them look bad and those guys take image seriously.

As for the private lines. Well, we will see. I used to work in that area and I've seen plenty of weak security on the inside of the firewall.

I'm guessing the public page goes down and a private line or two.

True. All they will be doing is taking down a web site or two. Nothing more.

Still, I like it when anyone sticks a finger in the eye of Wall Street.

NYSE?   Erased from the Internet?  What does that even mean?

Anon, love your thinking, but taking down the NYSE is like instituting gun control.   You are blaming the tool, not the criminal.  Now take down GS for a week, and I'll wear one of those V masks for Halloween.

It probably means a massive DDOS attack, which leaves the NYSE unreachable.

This is possible, but the brokers will probably make dedicated connections and some trading will occur.

Presuming that a few of my wild-ass guesses are correct, of course. :)

Mon, 10/03/2011 - 18:36 | 1734885 Dburn
Dburn's picture

Somehow , I don't believe that this is just about taking down a website. This sounds more like taking down the servers where brokers and others have a direct line. No trades. No quotes, Bids or asks which also brings down the options market since it is based on the equities price. Total  Panic. The HFT algos will be throwing computerized hissy fits.

It could have an interesting side effect;  If one is long or short stocks, and the brokerage can no longer access the NYSE servers, then they can't show prices on the stocks that are in one's portfolio.Imagine logging in to a OLB and see that except for cash you have been zeroed out. I do wonder how PUTS  would react if the underlying security was at zero.

It would be quite a feat to pull down the servers but then again, this isn't anything that hasn't been done before on servers with a lot more layers of security. I don't know if they have that capability but I can imagine if they were able to do it , it would cause a significant amount of selling at "market" besides triggerring stop losses, so when the computers are back on  line, the gap down will be enormous .

Something tells me one shouldn't be long, except with some experimental puts, at the close of business 10/9/2011

The erased from the Internet line makes it sound like they are going to take down nyse.com, the rather useless public web presence.   If that's the case, I give this a big who gives a shit.

Why are they targeting a website? What misguided idiots.

When the only tool you've got is a botnet then every problem looks like a website that needs to come down.

Mon, 10/03/2011 - 16:56 | 1734567 CPL
CPL's picture

Not quite.  I believe the transaction systems are being targetted.  DDoS works quite nicely if the timing of trades is critical.  But smurfing and injection works better.  Especially if the trades being conducted by algo's start reacting to them.  Worse yet the application management appliance sitting on the outside go into turtle mode.  You don't have to kick over a server, just trick it into believing something is happening.

Most IPS devices then start turning things off to protect the infrastructure.

Garbage in, garbage out is the end effect.  The website will get kicked over just for effect.

so do we set targets on our shares? I have a butt load of tna that needs to make me some money. I'll set the limit price to 90.05 for 1500 shares all or nothing... so it will be easy for anon to see me.  Anon, make sure you use a banksters account to hit my price hehe...

Mon, 10/03/2011 - 17:58 | 1734804 CPL
CPL's picture

If it fucks up enough.  the theory is you could set your price to infinity or zero if you wanted to and you just might sell a single share either direction because the Algo's are stupid enough to offer a counter bid.

someone might become the single richest person on the planet selling a single share.

and

someone else will become the brokest.

That's how silly the whole system is now.

Why not take down the Federal Reserve first. You would then take down both the banksters and their tools. Taking on the NYSE would make for a good show but the tools would still be in place.

LOL - dated a guy who worked on Wall Street for a long time and I set up his home wireless for him (in his city apartment) - he did not have a clue! He was used to having assistants gather data and put together the excel spreadsheets and graphs - which he would oversee being put in a powerpoint. He never set up a computer on his own or even repaired a bad connection.

And had no idea of how basic excel functions worked - not talking data analysis package here - basics!

How safe is money in a virtual account when someone can shut the system down or worse, manipulate the system and transfer money from one accountholder to another?

If this goes viral which it will, since ZH is the new gospel... this is becoming one self fullfilled prophecy.
