Police Bludgeon Peaceful Occupy UC Berkeley Protesters with Batons

George Washington's picture

This is just the latest in a series of criminal acts of unprovoked police violence against peaceful Occupy protesters. See this, this, this, this, this, this, this and this.

As I noted earlier today, the problem is the militarization of U.S. police forces:

Journalists from across the spectrum have documented the militarization of police forces in the United States, including CNN, Huffington Post, Forbes, Esquire, The Atlantic, Salon, and the Cato Institute.

***

But the militarization of police started long before 9/11 … in the 1980s.

If these kids learn anything it's that they should max out their student loans, use the cash for investing in physical (land, gold, etc). And for chrissakes, use a un-traceable trust!

Premise Four: Civilization is based on a clearly defined and widely accepted yet often unarticulated hierarchy. Violence done by those higher on the hierarchy to those lower is nearly always invisible, that is, unnoticed. When it is noticed, it is fully rationalized. Violence done by those lower on the hierarchy to those higher is unthinkable, and when it does occur is regarded with shock, horror, and the fetishization of the victims.

Increasing the number of college graduates no more increases the ranks of the middle class than increasing the number of carpenters results in more home construction. All we get are better educated unemployed and more debt. Graduates don't suffer from the loss of manufacturing jobs directly, since most degreed individuals aren't going to work on assembly lines, so they gave scant attention to the outsourcing of production. They are suffering more directly from the contraction of the FIRE sector and from the contraction of the public workforce. Government expansion has been one giant sponge that absorbs excess graduates, and it's now saturated. So, we have these protests...

Oh please.  As if it isn't every UC Berkeley student's dream to be bludgeoned by a police baton.  They probably got course credit for it anyway.

One must take into account that the impulse to bludgeon UC Berkeley students just on general principals is more or less overwhelming for most normal people every minute of every day.

If you want to see real police brutality and abuse of citizenry spend a day following around some state environmental police.

That statement tells us nothing about normal people, but it tells us volumes about who and what you are.

If there are any generalized impulses to bludgeon among normal people, they are directed at Congress, the Fed and their Wall Street owners.

Yah, and the same moron students would probably protest against curbing "union bargaining rights" which are extremely skewed towards financially benefitting the same brutal police force (that is simply doing it's job and clearing an illegal encampment). Bottom line, student protests have ALWAYS been exaggerated by the media and completely underwhelming in their impact. I love that they've recycled the same boring, predictable 'whole world is watching' chant - because it's true, albeit mainly for entertainment purposes.....

Cops have always been thugs.  Nothing new there.  So are most OWS protesters.   They hinder the use and enjoyment  of PUBLIC places.  Public places are not just for ("whiney, no solid platform but Communism"(???)  are you fuckin kidding in this day and age?!), but public places are for the public.   They have been there long enough and have caused enough damage, and don't have any legit platform.   This is why we hire cop thugs.  It is now; after two months, time to unleash them and send these dirtbags back home.

I bet you'd never complain if Verizon pitched a bunch of tents in a public park and started promoting a new line of cell phones. Maybe OWS protesters need to start selling things to gain the respect of Americans, who can apparently only respect activity that is related to consumption.

The only green shoots I see in the USA today are coming from the "liberty tree'.

To spill ones blood in support of the constitution is every Americans right and duty, regardless of persuasion of sex, religion, class, politics, etc. All the ad-hominems are totally meaningless.

This movement is in it's infancy. Ghandi's peaceful protest lasted years.

One can only hope that the protesters can and will remain passive. Civil war is not the answer. Overwhelming numbers is.

If the protesters cause is strong enough nationally, then it will overcome.

Lots of grief, blood and sadness meantime.

Some of us believe that the conflict is being fought on this thread. It's not. Out there on the streets, my brave lads....or not.

Regards.

India had Gandhi, OWS has... a dog, I think. Oh, and many overbearing and controlling "facilitators." A movement needs real leaders who can build real consensus on a select few intrensic issues. The great Leaderless Experiment is listing.

Although I agree with the author, this was hardly a "beating" and it was clear that the action was ordered in hopes of initiating a violent response from what were very clearly peaceful protesters.  You will see more and more of this until the police and the kleptocrats behind those badges get what they keep hoping for - a viloent response.

Personally, I can not wait for a few more of my brothers in arms to come home.  I hire veterans, but I am always surprised by those who don't.  Idle hands will find something to do, somethings never change.  hedge accordingly.

Just a bunch of #uckin thugs in uniform.

America is making a very, very critical mistake. Most think that these are just a bunch of young punks or anarchists. The fact is that this is the middle class... who have middle class parents... This is a precursor of what's to come.

So far, America is turning a blind eye to this... when the crisis washes up on our shores from Europe and the middle class gets out into the streets... there will be a sea change in public opinion on the police.

This is shameful...

Exactly.  Life and Nature make no promises regarding anyone's survival, all you have to fear is indeed fear itself.  Take a stand against tyranny and insure your own security and survival, as well as that of your neighborhood and community.

There was a warning posted at resumesWINinterviews.com about the rising frustration among both the 99%ers and the government...  http://www.resumeswininterviews.com/fix.html   It is indeed going to be rough for the 99%ers for quite a while while they try to get their "sea legs" under them in this matter...  This definition from a colleague captured the spirit of the movement rather eloquently and may help the movement:  "99%ers are NOT collateral".

Also at resumesWINinterviews.com, this... is it common sense, or uncommon sense?

Mike "Mish" Shedlock, Investment Advisor:

  • End bank bailouts...prosecute fraud, [I add: and not just the little guys]
  • Scrap Davis-Bacon and all prevailing wage laws
  • End public unions' right to collective bagaining
  • Legalize hemp and then tax it
  • Lower corporate tax rates
  • Stop the wars...stop being global police
  • End the Federal Reserve and fractional reserve lending
  • Implement campaign reform to stop vote-buying by unions and corporations

I would add, all of congress to serve only for one year, no pay, no benefits, no big trips, no bribes. Violation of the last will be considered treason.
