You know, once again, let me explain to you that it is not possible to peacefully OCCUPY a public place. The word OCCUPY means, "to seize possession of and maintain control over by or as if by conquest."It is unlawful to occupy a public place as if by conquest, or to refuse the orders of a public official to dispurse an illegal occupation. Conquests and occupations are not peaceful by definition and they certainly are not democratic. Why is it impossible for you to understand this?
That's the whole thing. They are taking a violent concept and turning on it's ear. But you're playing a semantic game and you know it. They are taking a what is usually a state tactic, and instead using it as a populist tactic against the injustice of the state apparatus.

The purpose of a police force to protect public safety and then protect property. There is never any justification for using police violence to enforce orderliness, to open a public right of way being blocked by a crowd which is doing nothing but standing in the way. The suffering of the people who want to use the right-of-way justifies arrest but does not justify beatings. These pigs weren't effecting arrest, they were bullying. What I saw on this video was ASSAULT WITH A DANGEROUS WEAPON and MOB ACTION by uniformed stormtroopers. I saw no policing going on.
Its all context, trust me in Berkeley this is more common than you know. What you are looking at are a bunch of overpaid paramilitary knuckleheads who wanted to beat on some students. The "occupy" thing has been going strong there since the 60's without, for the most part, this kind of action on the part of the cops. This, imo, appears to be spillover from neighboring oakland. No excuse for beating on citizens like that, many options for getting them to move that dont involve a gut shot from a baton.

People have a right to assemble, yes. You may assemble in your home, in a place of worship, in a bar (if the owner tollerates it), in a meeting hall, and in a public park (if you have your permit), and government has no part in determining what you are assembling for unless it portens harm or expense on the public.
However, you cannot assemble on a public thoroughfare, blocking traffic, because the traffic also has rights to move about freely. Not that that's what's going down here, but just an example there are limits to rights, and those limits are other people's rights.
So when the rights of one group interfere with the rights of another, that invites government in to mediate, which is not always the desired outcome. "Peaceful" has got nothing to do with it. Besides, passive-agressives are universally annoying people. Inconveniencing the general public as a strategy to build consensus is a major miscalculation on the part of any protest.
A college campus is private property. I don't know the place, but I assume this took place on campus? Tell me, if a group of people assembled on your front lawn without your permission and you decided that it was time to go, but there was no apparent threat to you or your property, what is the government's role in removing them if you aren't the "turn the shotgun on them" kind of person?

The police were there to protect property and the lives inside that property. The police had their backs against the wall, literally. The police told them to back up and the kids did not comply. The police did not say to go home, stop your peaceful assembly. They said, move back.
Watch the video at the 5 second mark. The lead officer calmly turned his head to the other officers, gave them an order, pulled his helmet faceshield down and proceeded to beat back the mob before they were pinned. Once they had more breathing room, the police stopped. They did not beat the kids in the head. They did not force them to the ground. This was a crowd control opperation.
By the way this nation is not a democracy; it is a republic. A democracy is mob rule and that is exactly what OWS is trying to install in the country where everyone is wiggling their fingers up or down to come to a group concensus -- what a bunch of crap.
Read your history about the "democracy" (aka. Reign of Terror) what occured after the French revolution and learn what OWS is really about.

"Police protect property." First, that concept is shit to begin with, because the rich claim they own everything (apparently even that which is public). So this relegates cops to being essentially private security for the wealthy, because the poor don't own anything and never will.
Second, how in this instance were they protecting "property?" What danger was it in? When people gather in a public space, they need to be beaten to prevent the space from...use?
If cops want to protect property so badly, we should send then to Texas and Nebraska to beat back those who construct the Keystone XL pipeline. Maybe police should go club some BP execs for what they did to the Gulf of Mexico. And maybe we can get a line of cops to beat any loggers who try to cut down the few remaining old growth forests.

But then again, we're talking modern liberal education here and these kids have probably watched too much TV or read too many garbage books romanticising the demonstrations of the 60's...etc. I'm sure Sunzi has written something about openly confronting a force that is vastly superior than yours in an open field of battle but I guess those students have no interest in reading that kind of book.
