Popular Media Personality: The U.S. Has the Moral Authority to Annihilate Iran Because They’re Evil

George Washington's picture

Tucker Carlson says that the U.S. has moral authority to annihilate Iran because they’re evil.

What makes Iran evil?

Believe it or not, quite a few evangelical Christians think that all Muslims are evil.   And the war on terror has largely been a religious crusade.*

Moreover, there is a widespread myth repeated by American media and politicians that Iran’s President (Ahmadinejad) said that Israel should be “wiped off the map”.

As a New York Times translation notes, Ahmadinejad wasn’t referring to Israel at all, but to the “regime” – i.e. the current political administration - in Israel.

Moreover, it was not Ahmadinejad himself speaking. He was quoting Ayatollah Khomeini, who died in 1989 (and who looked exactly like Sean Connery’s evil twin)

Arash Norouzi – who despises Iran’s current leadership as a “backward regime” – notes:

What did Ahmadinejad actually say? To quote his exact words in Farsi:

“Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad.”

That passage will mean nothing to most people, but one word might ring a bell: rezhim-e. It is the word “regime.” pronounced just like the English word with an extra “eh” sound at the end. Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime. This is a vastly significant distinction, as one cannot wipe a regime off the map. Ahmadinejad does not even refer to Israel by name, he instead uses the specific phrase “rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods” (regime occupying Jerusalem).

So this raises the question.. what exactly did he want “wiped from the map”? The answer is: nothing. That’s because the word “map” was never used. The Persian word for map, “nagsheh” is not contained anywhere in his original Farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase “wipe out” ever said. Yet we are led to believe that Iran’s president threatened to “wipe Israel off the map.” despite never having uttered the words “map.” “wipe out” or even “Israel.”

The full quote translated directly to English:

“The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.”

Word by word translation:

Imam (Khomeini) ghoft (said) een (this) rezhim-e (regime) ishghalgar-e (occupying) qods (Jerusalem) bayad (must) az safheh-ye ruzgar (from page of time) mahv shavad (vanish from).

As the New York Times pointed out

R. Nicholas Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, recently: “Given the radical nature of Iran under Ahmadinejad and its stated wish to wipe Israel off the map of the world, it is entirely unconvincing that we could or should live with a nuclear Iran.” But is that what Mr. Ahmadinejad said? And if so, was it a threat of war?

For months, a debate among Iran specialists over both questions has been intensifying. It starts as a dispute over translating Persian but quickly turns on whether the United States (with help from Israel) is doing to Iran what some believe it did to Iraq building a case for military action predicated on a faulty premise. “Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to wipe Israel off the map because no such idiom exists in Persian,” remarked Juan Cole, a Middle East specialist at the University of Michigan and critic of American policy who has argued that the Iranian president was misquoted.

“He did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse.” Since Iran has not “attacked another country aggressively for over a century,” he said in an e-mail exchange, “I smell the whiff of war propaganda.”

Jonathan Steele, a columnist for the left-leaning Guardian newspaper in London, recently laid out the case this way:

The Iranian president was quoting an ancient statement by Iran’s first Islamist leader, the late Ayatollah Khomeini, that ‘this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time,’ just as the Shah’s regime in Iran had vanished. He was not making a military threat. He was calling for an end to the occupation of Jerusalem at some point in the future. The ‘page of time’ phrase suggests he did not expect it to happen soon.

In fact, many orthodox Jews are opposed to Zionism. Whether Zionism is a good or bad political movement is open to debate. But Iran’s dislike of the Zionist regime is not the same as calling for Israel to be wiped off the map … in the same way that disliking the Bush administration or the Obama administration is not the same as calling for the destruction of America.

In terms of the U.S. having “moral authority” to annihilate Iran, perhaps Mr. Carlson thinks that America’s overthrow of Iran’s democratically-elected government, backing of Iraq in the war against Iran, and support of terrorist groups trying to overthrow the Iranian government give us the moral authority to continue to attack Iran.

*  I am from the Judeo-Christian tradition, and am accepting of both Jews and Christians.  Please remember that Christian writer and Army psychiatrist M. Scott Peck explained that there are different stages of spiritual maturity. Fundamentalism – whether it be Muslim, Christian, Jewish or Hindu fundamentalism – is an immature stage of development. Indeed, a a Christian fundamentalist who kills others in the name of religion is much more similar to a Muslim fundamentalist who kills other in the name of his religion than to a Christian who peacefully fights for justice and truth, helps the poor, or serves to bring hope to the downtrodden.

can we really afford another war? uhh... were +$16 trillion in debt and counting-as for nukes, IRAN has the right to defend itself from Israel [or whoever] -jezuz people lay off the kool aid-the same twits that SWORE Iraq had WMDs are now trying to sucker punch us with "No! Wait! Its IRAN that has the WMDs!"   fool me  once....

What is never mentioned in US corporate media reporting is the history that it is the US that has waged war on Iran by overthrowing their democracy from 1953-1979, and then acting with Iraq for an unlawful War of Aggression that killed up to a million Iranians from 1980-1988. Because these facts are not disputed as far as I know, and in obvious violation of war law, that makes the US guilty of Wars of Aggression on Iran that again killed up to a million of their people.

Blue Horshoe Loves Annacott Steel's picture

To tell the truth, if we invaded Israel & overthrew their shitty government, installed a pro-US government that didn't screw w/ the Muslims, we'd be seen as liberators & get some cheap oil.  We'd become the HEROES of the Middle East.

Better to have billions of Muslims as our friends than some desert country that is a thorn in everyone's side & has nothing to offer us.

Protecting the stupid Israelis was never in the US's interests.

frostfan's picture

So let me understand your logic.  The US should backstab the country they've called their strongest ally over the last 40 years so Muslims who use every excuse/reason/story to hate us will stop hating us.  What next, we stifle every priest who wants to burn a Koran, we let Sharia laws trump our laws in US courts?  We make our women wear burkas?  We stop letting dogs live in our houses?

Who are you kidding thinking after we liberted Kosovo that somehow liberating Israel would change anything?  Muslims hate us because we're not Muslim, period.

TheFourthStooge-ing's picture

You drink the propaganda from a fire hose.

frostfan's picture

You know, GW spends the article breaking down the translation which I admit, meaning and context get lost between languages.

As much as GW obsesses about this, however, he doesn't bother to mention or find where Iran's leader says Jews have a right to live in Israel.  Now wouldn't that be an easier way to break the subject?

Maybe GW can explain why Iran removed their soccer game with Israel from their official records or why they won't compete against Israel and they're the only country in the world that acts this way.  Oh yeah, angels and victims, I forgot.

frostfan's picture

In the meantime, Iran has a Christian priest on death row because he is um Christian.  Somehow the Iranian ass-kissing apologist GW doesn't mention him in the story.

TheFourthStooge-ing's picture

frostfan falls to the propaganda thusly:

In the meantime, Iran has a Christian priest on death row because he is um Christian.  Somehow the Iranian ass-kissing apologist GW doesn't mention him in the story.

Iran placed that "Christian priest" on death row because he's a rapist. Somehow the propaganda-swallowing war girls don't mention that in the story.

RichardP's picture

Iran placed that "Christian priest" on death row because he's a rapist ...

The rest of the story says that none of the Iranian judiciary agrees with that claim.  The only charge in any court documents dating back to the original arrest is apostasy.  It is easy to find the news stories that back this up.

frostfan's picture

Nice source..... oh yeah none.

Then why can he get off death row if he recants  and stops preaching?

Anyone can make up anything and be a conspiracy theorist.

Raskolnikoff's picture

Iran has in public proclaimed rather loudly that they want to destroy Israel. Whatever this need or proclomation symbolizes, it can't be a good thing...if it's not a good thing, it must be evil. I don't care if it's Christians, Muslims, Jews or Mormoms standing up to protect any large group of people from nuclear elimination, those that stand in unselfish defense of anothers' rightful ability to peacefully exist are good people, and if they happen to be evangelical Christians, so be it. I don't understand the blurry non-sensical moral relativism Washington is pushing here.

If we do end up being suckered by the zionists into a war in the middle east i suspect americans will finally have had enough of our zionist masters. Israel will have finally used up its political capital and shit on its one remaining ally once too often.

I am so sick of this middle east bullshit I am ready for the israeli regime to be wiped off the map and for the victims of ethnic cleansing to be allowed to return.

Raskolnikoff's picture

If someone starts shooting at me and I choose to shoot back, well call me a sucker all you want, but it is strongly recommended for those who wish to live to defend themselves whenever it is possible.

Lot's of folk are sick of the Middle East, Terrorism, Abortion, the true state of how the relationship of church and state should be, the demands of marriage as well as the need to grow and sacrafice for your fellow man and the more intimate relationships one might have in his lifetime. easy to give up in frustration and quit the noble venture of tryng to be a good person, but I personally will not be goaded into such lame laziness no matter how noble you might portray that resignation of personal responsiblity might be.

F*ck Israel.  Dumbest decision of the 20th century was forming a colony for them while pissing off all the people with oil.  What strategic benefit does Israel provide the US, plus they once attacked us & killed American soldiers!

The Holy Chosen people?  They treat the Palestinians like the Nazis treated them.

frostfan's picture

Aside from helping the US win the cold war.  Ok, go ahead and ignore that and take a drive in your Japanese car.

true brain's picture

I agree. the Iran war should be the last straw  which will bring on the actual bankrupt of america. And from the rubble will rise a new and informed society, one which will elect intelligent leaders, not all the religious quackos who yearn for the second coming of a nonexistent god, an apocalyse and the following rapture or the lefties wall street uncle tom who would do anything the moneyed class tells him  to do. Under these buffoons we have suffered for too long. A new society will rise that will think for itself and herald in an unparallel civilzed age that will last for ten thousand years.

Am I delusional in hoping for this? Honestly, I'm. Everyone is toast, just get out of the way.

Bring on the war. pass the popcorn. See you after the apocalypse.

steve from virginia's picture

You know you are getting to the end of business-as-usual when 'stupid' comes up as the go-to option over and over.

Remember last year when the Tea Party was hot to cut the Dems/Obama over the debt ceiling? I wrote a bunch of letters to my Congressmen, etc. in Virginia (!) congratulating them on their perspicacity and wisdom encouraging them to hold the line w/ Michelle Bachmann and cause the US to default. I pointed out that this would lead to the collapse of the debt-based US economy and the result would be the most forward-leaning environmentally friendly act that Congress could imagine. Most of the US waste-based industries would crash outright due to the absence of credit. Of course, the Tea Party cowards blinked and the establishment is back to (its job) of expanding credit as it should.

Now we have the war-mongers threatening to attack #3 oil producer (with a chokehold on another 20% or so of crude production). I applaud the mongers for their  perspica... exact same thing! Attacking Iran will result to the loss of perhaps 20-22% of the crude oil on today's market leading to a tremendous collapse in the oil-waste industries. I have been begging and pleading for the end of automobiles and the auto industry in my lifetime, begging and pleading, praying on my hands and knees to Allah (that's a bit over the top). With a war, I would actually get to see this with my own eyes. (It might be hard to find food in the grocery stores, however, I am/recommend stocking up.)

The 1973 embargo cost the US 3% of its fuel supply. 20% made Cuba into a nation of vegetable gardeners. I can see it here. A war would be the most environmentally-friendly action the US could possibly imagine. Better than cap-n-trade, better than a gas tax ... better than a US government default!

Let the war begin, sooner the better.  The climate will thank you!

I never understood the liberal/progressive love affair with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Ayatollahs or its leaders that to just mention a few things like to organize cartoon contests about the Holocaust and sponsor Holocaust research to prove that it did not happen. What kind of mindset does it take to make fun of murdered human beings?

While such manifestations are repulsive what the regime does to its own citizens is far worse. Everything about the form of Islam that is promoted by the Shiite Tyrants in Iran should be repulsive and a regime such as the present one has no right to rule over its people.

Should we annihilate the regime, of course, by proxy--arm its own internal opposition.

Generally a big fan of your posts.  But what I get out of the quote is that the Jewish state must be removed from the pages of time.  I think the intent of that quote is pretty obvious: send all the Crusading Jews back Europe and restore a proper Isalmic regime to Palestine.  The niggling over the trasnlation, whlie informative, changes nothing.  Further, this opinion is not uniquely Iranian, but pretty universal around the Islamic Middle east.  The palestinian cause is a lighting rod around the middle east: it's Al Queda's best recruiting slogan.  Unfortunately, the USA takes one side making us vulnerable to equal religious hatred.

I am sympathetic to both sides: the Jews are not returning to their God-given holy land, they are interlopers.  But people (and our ancestors like Neanderthals' and Homo Erectus) have been migrating and interloping for millions of years.  At the same time Israel has a functioning democracy (in the modern sense) in a region that vassilates between theocratic demogouges, miltary dictatorships and absurdist monarchies.

A rational perspective would ignore the religious differences and point out the the Jews are showing the way to an improved life for all middle eastern citizens.  A practical perspective would take the intransigence of these particular religions into account, and suggest building a fallout shelter.

frostfan's picture

You assume that GW is pro-democracy.  Just because he calls himself GW doesn't mean he believes in democracy.  How else do you describe his obsession with treating Iranian leadership like angels and victims?

Actually they are merely Zionist terrorists who displaced the Palestinians with violence.

cherry picker's picture

I generally agree with your comment although I do not interpret georges post the same way you do.

Most people do not realize that the foundation of Jewish, Chrstian and Islam, the old testament as it were, is the same.  Islam regards Jesus as an honored prophet.  All three religions promote loving God (Allah) and fellow man.

Why we are in this situation is that there are many there and here who bastardize the message
