Are you suggesting that the "state" is not a religion as constituted today? Marx was very effective at separating religion from state. There was a fascinating interview on Fresh Air the other day which explains all--worth a listen if you're wondering about RP and caucuses (and Terry Gross asked specifically "What about Ron Paul?")

Basically, caucuses are non-binding straw polls (states with primaries are 'a little more binding') but in the end, according to the guest, it's all for show--the nominees can be changed at the will of the party leaders.
It seems (my opinion--not the guest) they're looking for the prettiest mutt in the kennel to send to the national dog show (or, more acidly, the town idiot who will be able to beat the other party's idiot without blowing up their own candidacy.)
This is why RP gets shut out--he's the only one asking questions that requires some level of abstract intellegence to answer. I was left thinking after the interview that what we need in this country is new political party that eschews culture war rhetoric for reasoned debate, and you can't run for office unless you can demonstrate reasoning skills--you actually have something to say. "The Intellegent Party?"

When I was yong it was common practice for certain forms, such as required to enroll in school etc, to ask what religion you were.
I was too young to know any better and I rememer asking my parents and friends what the best religion was, Protestant or Catholic. I usually answered according to which was in favor at the time. I never heard of Islam and the term Jew was usually used in reference to people who didn't like paying for anything.
I look at the world today and realize the thinking behind the form designers of those days and now is the same.
Anyone who votes for a candidate solely on what he or she professes to be a follower of is deluding themselves. The only thing a candidate should follow is the Constituion and Bill of Rights, and they can't get that right.
It may serve this world much better if more will simply answer similar question "I AM BUDDHIST", at least for the statistics or profiling gathering purpose.
ALL the religions originated from the ME bring a lot of violences to this world, with each claims itself as the only correct one and try to nullify or dominate the others under the God's name, it's hard to find the essential peace in this world. Just learn their violent histories!
BUDDHISM and other philosophical teachings (Tao, Zen etc) differ that they don't forward such claim and domination... it's more about one finds peace with oneself, other people, nature and higher power.
