WB7 thanks as always.

How about a mashup of Apple's 1984 commercial and their current facist worker camps in China?

They have become what they parodied.

Sorry if you already did it and I missed it.

For practical reasons I stay away from the subject of China. No reason to antagonize my hosts.

The thing about those factories is they literally build everything else electronic, not just APPL stuff. So you really have to decide whether you want to go totally dark. It's not an easy question to struggle with. I have heard just about every argument pro and con.

The fish are a major concern and not just here.

i remember in the early 80s when they caught mainland China outsourcing shoe parts to Hong Kong. some US congressional types got into China and they found evidence of prison labor, but corporate America pulls the strings. and the unofficial boilerplate went that Chinese society would become more progressive from the inside. and to a degree that is true, at least their standard of living. but to me its paper mache society, like one of those hollywood western towns all front and no buildings behind. (not that i know anything about them), i know it took America a long time, and plenty of social angst to get where we are, you just can't throw up an instant western civilization, add water. i suspect that there will be a sudden a radical shift in China soon, as too many of the worlds urban poor live in slums (reading Planet of Slums, by Mike Davis)

i hold very firmly to the role Bush played as Manchurian President, and the GOPS acquiescence to Chinese aggression. the GOP has a barbell ideology, conservative social values for the poor, corporate values for the rich, and fuck the middle class. so far its worked for them.

This is not a simple subject to tackle. You have to start with the struggle these people are used to dealing with. Chinese know how to make do with a fraction of what a typical Westerner consumes. Really meager by our standards. Suddenly they have a chance to work in a factory in the South. That is a big change and then, naturally, they live in a consumer driven juggernaut designed by us. So they want more. They know how to be austere but they also know how to flaunt it big time when they have it.

And so on and so on and so on.

Obviously the government is desperately trying to make sure everyone gets a piece of the pie. Not an easy task at all.

Meanwhile the human toll of all those migrant factory workers not living with their kids, is staggering.

the Chinese are what you might call a zero gradient culture, like India. in India they have the caste system, one culture, many different economic classes. in the west culture is a way of transcending the class ladder. i guess that's why i really don't get Slum Dog Millionaire. all of China's culture is internal, they do nothing for export. chairman Mao called it the cultural revolution, but its hard to see what came of that. to me they're only playing with half the deck. and the allusions to post war Japan ends there, because that culture flourished, and China just seems to be stuck. Americas cultural dead zone was after the civil war, the american west, when most of the east coast culture was thrown off the back of the wagon. and these things take time to permeate the culture regardless of all the high speed electronic devices you have. this why i like to see your work, which is tangible and explores our ability to remix images and raise awareness. i wouldn't even consider China a work in progress, not yet, and something will have to happen there because there is too much communication equipment, and not enough art and culture.

Understood.  I recently disassembled an angel (no, bear with me)--a big lovely angel with colors swirling through fiber optic wings.  It sits atop our Christmas tree each year, my wife had it before we met.

So it's kind of old for this type of thing.  This year it didn't work.  Rather than trash it, I took it apart in an attempt to fix it.  I have to say, I marvelled at the internal mechanisms, all of which were clearly 'off the shelf' items but designed and arranged very nicely.  I found the part I needed (online of course) and all was well.  My wife wept when she saw it glowing again.

Just a story.  Happy Year of the Dragon to you.  Stay safe.

As long as any American finds reason to exclude any other American from life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, there will never be a force big enough, strong enough, or brave enough to stop the erosion of the constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and the American 'dream". Divide and conquer by race, religion, sex, sex orientation, education, personal beliefs, living standard....on and on anything to accomplish the goal, these are the flags that the masters use to trick and enslave. Turn you against you neighbor, your work mate, your best friend, your best judgment. Confuse truths and deliver misinformation is an easy game when you have fear in your hearts. A table with legs of unequal length can not sit true. It will never be understood by the 99.9% and that is something the 0.1% are know is their best weapon.

In battle, when the enemy charges you with overwhelming odds in their favor you do not care if the soldier next to you is white, black, yellow, green, jew. catholic, atheist, straight, gay, man, woman, child, foreign, or any other exclusionary reason. This is why America gets weaker every day, every year, we are our own worst enemy and can't see the forest for the trees of hate and mistrust. We stone one of our own with glee and praise adultery and thieves, murders and liars, worship idols and lust for greed. What would Jesus say?  He can't talk right now, he is crying.

You're right. That really is the worst part.

On my better days, I have some compassion for folks that can't deal with what's really happening, who live out their day to day lives as if everything was going to be just fine. And then other days, like yesterday, I hear things like Kevin Anderson's speech about the real likely impact of global warming from an engineer's standpoint, and I am chilled to the bone.

I can't believe the US MSM just let Obama get away with that cynical shit, which he doesn't even mean. He just looks into his appointment diary, "oh, another state of the union"... hmm ... well, lets put all the great speeches into a digital blender and make a stereo-typical load of meaningless passionless old crap that's guaranteed to get standing ovations, nods of approval, even tears from Das-Boner, and innumerable dumbshit-isms heaped up by those fawning gutless MSM dead-enders.

I have a more attractive solution to the, "any colour, provided it's black" mentality.

Say what you will of his politics, but Neruda still said it best:

"THE UNITED FRUIT CO."

When the trumpet sounded,
all was prepared on the earth
and Jehovah parceled out the world
to Coca-Cola Inc., Anaconda,
Ford Motors, and other entities:
the United Fruit Company Inc.
reserved for itself the juiciest bit,
the central coast of my land,
the gentle waist of America.

It rebaptized these lands
as "Banana Republics,"and over the sleeping dead,
over the restless heroes,
who had conquered greatness,
liberty and flags,
The Company established a comic opera,
drove all free will insane,
handed out crowns of Caesar,
unsheathed greed, and attracted
the dictatorship of the flies,
Trujillo flies, Tacho flies,
Carías flies, Martínez flies,
Ubico flies, flies moistened
by humble blood and marmalade
drunken flies buzzingover the tombs of the common people,
circus flies, wise flies
well versed in tyranny.

Among the bloody flies,
The United Fruit Company steps ashore,
devastating the coffee and the fruits,
in its ships that sail
like trays
taking away the treasure
of our drowning lands.
All the while, near the sugary deep of the harbors,
the Indians fell,
buried in the morning mists:
a corpse tumbles, a nameless thing,
a fallen number, a bunch of putrid fruit
thrown on the compost heap.

You know that eventually they WILL be coming for you.  I've mostly just lurked here for the last few years and have only just enough artistic talent to  appreciate and understand what you do.

Well, they may be corrupt but they too can see and appreciate Great Artistic Talent that is dangerous to them. And YOU are going to be perceived as a threat to them that they will most assuredly attempt to neutralize.

Because what you do REALLY does threaten them. Your humor and satire CUTS through the bullshit.

Think about where this is all going, and have an escape route planned.

We haven't really started the real conflict yet.  Nobody can say with certainly where this will end up, but I'm pretty sure it will get a LOT worse before it starts to get better.
