Wall Street Protest Starting to Look Like Egypt

Wall Street Protest Starting to Look Like Tahrir Square, Egypt

Alexander Higgins reports:

NYPD police scanners are estimating a crowd up to 5,000
are occupying liberty square in a scene that is now starting to look
more like Egypt’s Tahrir square.

The protests have become so large that Fox News has set up a live stream covering the protests. Here are some screen shots from their camera.

Here are some additional photographs from a helicopter.

Who Are the Protesters?

Wall Street is trying to write all of these people off as being
“hippies” who “need to get a job” (to which the protesters would
respond: That’s the point – There are no jobs, because Wall Street has destroyed the economy.)

Wall Street Protest Starting to Look Like Egypt.

The poor and the desperate, formerly-middle class people participating in the protests are not taking well to Wall Street’s “Let them eat cake” response.

But all types are marching, including grannies and pilots:

Marines and other military men and women.

Wealthy folks such as Russel Simmons and Alec Baldwin.

Liberals and conservatives.

On the other side of the protest line, Mayor Bloomberg is whining that the protesters are targeting bankers who “are struggling to make ends meet”.
He has a point: if Wall Street is reined in so that the rest of the
country has a chance, the bankers might have to cut back on their mistresses, prostitutes and solid gold toilets.

Class Warfare?

Yes, this is class warfare. But it is class warfare by the 1% against the other 99% (and see this). Specifically, it is the looting of the country by the top .1% through fraud.

As Warren Buffet – one of America’s most successful capitalists and defenders of capitalism – points out:

There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war ….

Leading economists note that rampant inequality was one of the main causes of the Great Depression and of the current economic crisis.

Indeed, given that inequality in America is worse than Egypt (or Tunisia, or Yemen or most Latin American banana republics), and that social mobility is lower in America than in most European countries (and see this), we have been predicting these types of protests for years.

If Wall Street is starting to look like Tahir Square, it is because
America is starting to look more and more like Egypt – with a handful of
super-rich, and crumbs for everyone else.

No pots of gold -- or silver -- at the end of the highly predictable rainbow as is/was the case in Egypt, Tunisia, Athens, Lisbon, Madrid, London, Madison, etc.

Looking into the future, there will be broken shop windows.

Sorry children, the cupboard is bare, there are no more freebies left to distribute. Mom and Dad ate all the cake, no more left to 'let them eat'.

Because of the constant harangue of 'debt' and 'more debt' rather than 'energy' and 'less energy' people actually believe that 'nailing the bankers' will somehow fix anything. This is one thing that the bankers are right about, they are irrelevant, from Bernanke on down.

What matters is petroleum, population and cars, nothing else. You can drive a car or have a job, drive a car or live in a house, you cannot do both anymore.

People around the world are demanding better lives for themselves. Sorry dudes, ain't gonna happen. The waste-based economy shall waste no more.

The operative word is 'LESS'. There will be fewer bankers because there will be fewer banks, LESS.

There will be fewer airline pilots because the airlines will go out of business: LESS.

There will be fewer jobs because the auto- and related industries will collapse: LESS,

There will be fewer jobs in other industries because system managers will bury their heads in the sand rather than promote agriculture, artisan industries and reconstruction of the built environment around people rather than machines: LESS.

There is less wealth, less crecibility, less flexibility, less creativity, less imagination, less accountability (not more), less mobility, less leisure and luxury ... if you don't get rid of fuel guzzling automobiles there will be less food, less water and a whole lot less people.

Once people get into the streets and demand removal of cars, the protestors can be taken seriously, not before.

It's them -- cars -- or us.

Well, the Collapse you speak of is clearly coming, I'm just trying to precipitate it before it really arrives in full force to full effect. See, if we gather ourselves, realize we're in this together, against a common enemy, and they really are the enemy it's not contrived in this instance, and we start talking, we realize we are not that different, I do not need to watch you starve so I can get a bigger erection, and thereby maybe preempt the catastrophe of the Collapse... maybe just maybe we can work together to help each other when the end time comes... when we run out of fuel and need to work together to eat, do shit.

OK, now that I spoiled the whole story, will you get your ass out of the chair and come protest, please.

JPMorgan Chase recently donated an unprecedented $4.6 million to the New York City Police Foundation.

The gift was the largest in the history of the foundation and will enable the New York City Police Department to strengthen security in the Big Apple. The money will pay for 1,000 new patrol car laptops, as well as security monitoring software in the NYPD's main data center.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly sent CEO and Chairman Jamie Dimon a note expressing "profound gratitude" for the company's donation.

"These officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe," Dimon said. "We're incredibly proud to help them build this program and let them know how much we value their hard work."

and so OUR money goes from wallet to skull...

It's one thing if you've been down there and seen it yourself.  As for the rest of us, who are you to call us Fascists for displaying skepticism?  If we followed the word of governments, legacy media, and the banking industry with the unquestioning faith with which you're asking us to view these protests, you'd call us sheeple or tools (and rightly so).  FFS, the labor unions and institutional left bussed a bunch of professional establishment radicals up there this weekend.

Fascists don't ask questions, fascists follow.  As a wise man once said, "You can point that fucking finger up your ass."

EDIT: I'm thinking maybe the "how dare you fascists dogs ASK QUESTIONS" line you ended with was part of your quote.  Should that be the case, someone else can point his finger somewhere else.

It's unreal to see union workers marching against Wall St. Essentially it's one organized racket marching against another. That's dense.

I think we should give them free movie tickets to "God Father" and teach them how old school rackets express frustration over each other. We then sell both sides some arms and encourage them to do it old fashion.

What would we lose anyway, a few less rackets in this nation? That's pretty good to me.

Just kidding. Don't get too worked up.

Gosh here's a thought.  Let's vote for someone who applies rule of law, not some airhead.

Nah, it'd never work.

In other news, Obama and the superfriends assasinated a bad bad man.  Never mind the law.  He was so bad they had to kill him twice.

You socialists voted for a goddamn establishment thief, and you're not going to do it again.  Now that the unions are joining in this will be the excuse to destroy the law entirely and complete the socialist takeover of the US.  There will be no election in 2012.  Get ready for war bc I'm a FUCKING PROPERTY OWNER.

Willougby, you are not alone.  I too am angry that the majority of ppl protesting are unions with lobbyists who do the same for them that that lobbyists do for Wall St.

They are the ones who voted for war and Fannie Mae home loans and more taxes and increases in the welfare state.  And they think money and business are evil and protest against it.  They confuse business with corporatism, and they will call for socialism and "equality" (a.k.a. wealth distribution at the point of a gun).

They will call for handouts, and trade tariffs and regulations on small business, they will beg the gov't to control energy and oil and food production.

I appreciate that finally people are participating and expressing anger/dissent.  However I fear that the people most likely to protest the loudest may be those who have the least understanding of how we got in this situation in the first place.

That's right ... divide and conquer.

Are you a lobbyist/shill for Wall Str?

Do you seriously suggest that unionists - even if some are corrupt - are on the same scale as banksters?

You are like a Zionist shill who condemns a few Palestinians firing little more than fireworks and saying that that is equal with cruise missiles, bunker-busters and other WMD.

Unless you happen to be a top honcho on Wall Street and/or a client politician in Washington, you are shitting in your own nest by vilifying any protestor who you imagine does not agree with Hayek, or whomever.

Get real FFS!  A movement is underway and in a general direction which you favour ... so the first thing you try to do is fuck it all up with your doctrines.

There's no point in "scaling" corruption.  Either you are or aren't so I'm going to be very choosy about who I throw in with, so banks and unions to me look like coercive forces.  If you shudder at the idea of "rule of law" then have a nice day.  When you say "zionist" etc I'm seeing someone who thinks in terms of groups and not individuals.  Individuals naturally have rights and groups arise to try to subjugate those rights.  A lot of us are trying to figure out if this group is trying to subjugate individuals or stand up as many.  I suspect the former.  If NYC didn't want this distraction to happen, they would have thrown them out by now.  Society has been devolving for some time, they are working to devolve the structure, the Alinsky approach.

I don't remember any unions getting trillion dollar bailouts from taxpayers and even the most corrupt union officials would cry with jealousy about the bonuses bankers pay themselves even after losing trillions.

"However I fear that the people most likely to protest the loudest may be those who have the least understanding of how we got in this situation in the first place."

Government is not the solution. Government is the problem. They continue under the delusion that just getting different people in charge will change anything at all. Government has to be gelded. That way, it doesn't matter who has power because they don't have the power to mess things up.

The law was written to restrain government.  The government for the people and by the people.  The US Govt now is a de facto corporation, instated through fraud, with the people unwilling employees - slaves.
No question it has to be neutered and restrained.  If you think the Michael Moores of the world have the sense to do it right, it's going to get bloody.  Luckily our armed forces are sworn to protect the constitution.  I doubt unions who employ thugs to do the exact opposite of the law are the people to cheer in this case.

More and more people are turning up, and more and more international TV channels re picking this up. This thing is snow balling in a way I don’t think anyone expected.

The police have blocked more people coming in over the bridges because weekend workers are now appearing.

So what’s the plan now mr obummer...capitulate or retaliate?

You could declare them terrorists and assassinate them...after all...they are only citizens! It’s not like they need a trial by jury under the constitution.

We could just show them all as hippies,  like on MSM tv; except that on Friday allot  intentionally wore suits…..didn’t see that on tv did we?

and no I'm am not some bloody socialist arsehole.

We need capitalism, free markets and accountability....starting with charges of malfeasance in government. Again it is the Icelanders that are pursuing this on their former prime minister. If they win, a world wide precedent will be set. Hence the fear by world leaders, to that inevitable shit storm.

"Inequality led to depression"?  Now that's idiotic!

Friendly reminder, the bill of rights states the following:  We have the right to life, liberty and the PERSUIT of happiness.  It says nothing about equal outcomes.  We now live in a society that's pissed because the outcome isn't the same.  The housing market was the first experiment (during the boom) where we let the bottom rung of the ladder take a crack at home ownership.  Wow, what an ass reaming we're all suffering as a result.

No equal outcomes, not now, not ever!

Sun, 10/02/2011 - 00:35 | 1730214 AustriAnnie
AustriAnnie's picture

The inequality of wealth we are seeing today is a result of the gov't granting handouts and privilege to some at the expense of others.

The unequal outcome we have is a problem.  I do not think that peope here on ZH, in general, are advocating further attempts to redistribute wealth on the part of the government.

I think most here on ZH would argue that the govt should stop subsidizing banks and welfare mommas, and leave each human being to pursue wealth on an even playing field.  Equality before the law would be a wonderful start.  No exceptions or exemptions just because you can afford a lobbyist.  Corporatism and bankster bailouts are a root cause of this inequality.  The push to give everyone a free home was created to make them rich, not to give the poor homes.  They used the marxist rhetoric that the people wanted to hear to keep the scam going.  Those who do not want to work will always jump behind "equality" as a cause.  But the fact is, the inequality that exists today exists because of criminal activity on the parts of banks and governments. Unfortunately, those who rail against this will go to the other extreme and call for equal outcomes, and in so doing, will support more of what got us into this situation.

Sat, 10/01/2011 - 19:05 | 1729790 theabyss11
theabyss11's picture

Nobody has the right to expect equal outcomes. Unworkable, and unfair. It would be nice if everybody paid into society what they take out. Say if the top 20% controlled 85% of the wealth they should be paying 85% of the taxes right? Anything under 85% of the taxes paid would mean their tax burdens are being taken up by the other 80%.
