Watching Irene - A Buoy's perspective
If you’re one of the 20 odd million in Metro NY and you’re wondering when and what this means, and you can’t get enough info, I give you some buoy data to watch after.
Buoy # 44065 is NY Harbor, # 44025 is South of Islip, Long Island.
The link(s) look like this:
When you scroll down you get this info:
I’m not sure what the “bend” points are on the coming storm. It depends on the tides. There is nothing good to report on that either.
If wave heights get to the levels measured off the coast of N. Carolina today are achieved around NYC, well, watch out.

Uh, oh...
As of 04:50 a.m., buoy 44065 is reporting wave height of 17.1....
watching the TV they really really really are trying to keep this thing a hurricane NHC says it will still be hurricane when it crosses Long Island tomorrow around 8am
The political pressure on NOAA and NHC must be incredible
Standard practice is to clean up your dupes... that is one reason for the edit button...
Don't confuse the misguided hucksters and hype-artists on TV for NOAA,,,,
The US media is only a reflection of the people, you do grasp and understand that. Do you?

Typical bureaucratic intransigence and stupidity... this storm is nowhere near as bad as was forecast 72 hours ago, yet it's still all systems go with the evacuations, road closures, mass transit shutdowns, media grandstanding/fearmongering etc. etc.
Here in south NJ they started closing roads while the storm was still 500+ miles away, preventing responsible boat and homeowners from protecting their property ... idiots

Buoy is off of Deleware coast SE of Cape May, NJ. 14.1 foot seas as of 17:50 EST
Hope those dopes in low-lying areas know they have lift pumps on the sewer system. Not fun when the power is off, and you find you are lowest on the system, as the dweebs keep flushing with whatever water they can find.
Bruce:
Station 44025 stopped transmitting 07/31/2011.
Lots of wind, 3 inches of rain in Wake county North Carolina. Wind snapped the tops of very old oak trees throughout the day. That's the extreme western edge, weak side, of this storm. I know from experience, A CAT-1 storm can do lots of damage especially to areas East of those buoys.
wave height alone isn't enough to gauge the severity of the sea state. you need to look at period as well. 5 ft over 13 sec is a nice rolling surface, if a little challenging for unpowered craft. shouldn't be any that far out.
when they roll in at 5 over 5 right at the pier, then you can worry about your small craft.
"Even passengers not flying anywhere near the East coast could be delayed for days as airlines work to get planes and crews back into position."
I'm waiting for GS and DB to write this disaster is "very bullish for America's GNP."
Looks like Irene is going to go right over Long Island, and pummel the sound mightily.
Cruel, cruel Irene! All those Poor Yachtsmen! First the Bahama's, now this! Where will they all go?
And they say it might be Days before they can restart deliveries of caviar to Connecticut! How could a just and loving god allow such thins?
Pleased to report that a ZH regular (since the third week of the old blog) had a fairly decent Irene (60-70mph) in Freeport, Bahamas and that my sailboat went through without damage.. Didn't even break a champagne flute.
Lobsters are deeply discounted, on sale here in CT this weekend as the seafood places along the shore are trying to dump inventory before the power goes out. Lobster and champagne for everyone this weekend!
Oh no not 8" of rainfall and 50mph winds!!! It's the end of the world.
We get worse storms coming off the great lakes. Yes there will be some power outages, normal with a storm, and flooding but come on 80,000 people lost power for three days in low density ares during a big ice storm last winter. If the same thing happened on the east coast it could have been millions without power.
Before Katrina the ratings monster this storm wuldn't have even been news. This evacutation panic is just a government test to see the response of the sheeple to authority.
If a weatherman can stand on the beach in the middle of where the hurricane made landfall and didn't get knocked over then it is not a big deal. What pisses me off is that these Chicken Little moments just make it harder t prepare for an actual emergency.
Lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2UhvN0k74w
But as someone has lived throught many Montreal winters (blackouts, frozen pipes and that ice storm, a little prep is better than none).
Better to be safe rather than sorry. Whenever Montreal winter weather looked threatening I would go to the dep: Water, wine, crackers and canned smoked oysters. I always had flashlights and batteries though - who doesn't - just for regular safety ? I find it weird that people are going shopping for flashlights - isn't that just something you should have in your house at all times?
And how does one predict an actual emergency? Reasonable people understand that adults must make choices in the absence of perfect information. That often means warnings must go out before we are certain whether they are actually necessary. Better to get off the beach when you don't need to than to stay there, get caught by surprise, and perish. It's called weighing the odds. Adults have been doing that forever. Because it's not a perfect world. And very rarely can anyone make perfect decisions.
Your critique makes you sound young and inexperienced.
Constant usage of the word "adults" in your reply is an insinuation that the poster has no idea what a mature idea is.
It is also funny as hell for you to use said article with our recent (or longstanding) understanding of those in power and how VERY VERY "adult-like" they are. /not/
Your character assassination makes you sound like Charlie Munger's fluffer.
Yes, my comment concerned the choice patterns forced upon adults. I was responding to one who was criticizing adults for making choices in the absence of perfect information (I used the word adults twice). And I meant to insinuate nothing. I was flat out criticizing the poster for criticizing adults who had to make choices in the absence of perfect information. No responsible adult waits to see what the storm will be like when it is on top of them before deciding what to do.
Re-read my remark. I concluded by stating Your critique makes you sound young and inexperienced. That was an observation, not character assasination. Being young and inexperienced has zero to do with character.
The risk is a storm surge/flooding of low lying areas, not violent weather of the cat 1. Lot's of low lying areas in/around NYC.
Mood music for a rainy weekend

I PERSONALLY HOPE IT DROWNS ALL THE WALL STREET BANKERS LIKE ABUNCH OF DROWN RATS
Won't happen but their summer places in the Hamptons may veery well get blown away
No need to feel sorry - they all have cheap federal insurance courtesy of us taxpayers...... face it, the masses get screwed no matter what.
At least the rebuilding will provide some local economic 'stimulus' for the working class.
My eagle-farm in New Jersey could be destroyed... so I covardly fled from it... OMG what a sow man I am...
the TV spin winds of 90 lashing the coast,, actual on spot wind gust of 30.
one tree was blown over... lots of rain.. large waves pounded sand . some sand damage .
lights out to a large section of beach area . new york ordering people to flee. as they will turn off power and subways .. Fema on guard ... get out of town . do not pass go . lingerers will be shot on sight
Yeah, uh....
WeatherUnderground. Take a look at individual cities winds... quite low. And then try the WonderMaps... All of the wind indicators have been removed. Go back tom individual cities from map. Benign readings.
Circuses
Bread and Fucking Circuses, all over again, one more time.

Radiation from Japan...do they have one of these off the Cali Coast measuring the Fuki Radiation Event coating the health nuts in Cali?
Last that I knew, all the radiation detectors were turned off. My guess would be so that the government could limit a person's damages caused by the fallout.
Check here.

Bruce, this is a highly informational iPad app which I strongly recommend to any who has the device ( NOAA Buoy Data Reader v.4.04 ). I have been following the path of "Irene" since its emergence in the West Indies. Interesting stuff.
I knew there was an app for that. Tks Don.
W.O.P.R., HAL9000, and Johnny 5 will have the entire market to themselves. I fully expect a limit up day.
I agree they are going to game the shit out of thre market on monday.
Are you sure the market will open? Ruin a good pair of Italian shoes?
Not a chance. Market will be closed.
great news for options /sarc
If enough underground infrastructure floods, the manipulators might have to hang their shorts out to dry for a couple days. :)
Yo' Bruce -
thankies fo' the WTAF from da' the bouys in the 'hood.
Huge celebration at The Hamptons next weekend if the storm turns out to be "less bad"
Let's fly in the Ukranian hookers!!!
And order up the best Vodka!!!
Is your Mom going to let you out of the house? It's nice to have a Sat afternoon fantasy, but did you clean your room and mow the lawn before the rain hits?
You're getting the Ukrainian babes ads too, are you? Looks like Kyiv for my holidays next year...
Not sure if even TPTB can manipulate the weather system to just barely 'beat expectations'...
Nice post again Bruce.... I tip my hat.
Am expecting no power for 24-36 hrs here in Westchester. The parkways will likely be closed to flooding. Some of the back roads will take a long time to be cleared.
Hope you are ready, good luck.
