The Web to “Go Dark” January 18th to Protest Censorship Bills

George Washington's picture

By Washington’s Blog

INTERNET TO SHUT DOWN WEDNESDAY TO PROTEST CENSORSHIP

Less than 24 hours after I noted that we’ve won a brief respite from SOPA, the bill’s chief sponsor said it’s back on track for mark up in February.

But a number of the world’s most popular websites – including Wikipedia, Twitpic, Reddit, Imgur, Mozilla and WordPress – are “going dark” on Wednesday January 18th to protest the censorship bills (SOPA and PIPA).

In addition, Google and other web titans will place prominent messages on their front pages urging their readers to oppose the draconian bills.

For example, Google has replaced its normal logo with this image (which links to an anti-SOPA page):

https://www.google.com/logos/2012/sopa12_hp.png

(Some popular porn sites like SpankWire.com are doing the same.)

SopaStrike.com has the following list:

Confirmed Participants:

Not all of SopaStrike’s information has been confirmed, and we know of at least a couple of these which are incorrect. On other other hands, I predict that thousands of sites will go dark tomorrow which aren’t on this list.

It’s easy for webmasters to join in the campaign. As SopaStrike notes:

Put this on your site or automate it by putting this [javascript] into your header, which will start the blackout at 8AM EST and end at 8PM EST.

You can use this alternative code from Zachary Johnson. Get a sense of what sites will look like before and after you insert the code. (Here’s more on Johnson’s code.)

WordPress – which hosts 60 millions blogs, and is the 18th most popular site on the web, and host of some blogs – sent the following message to its users:

We are making it possible for you to participate in the protest. There are two options: a “Stop Censorship” ribbon and a full blackout. The blackout portion will be in effect January 18 from 8am to 8pm EST, while the ribbon will be displayed until January 24. Here’s how to join in:

  1. Go to Settings ? Protest SOPA/PIPA in your dashboard.
  2. Select if you want to join the blackout or show a ribbon.
  3. If you choose to join the blackout, you can edit the message that will be shown on your site during the blackout.
  4. Preview what your protest will look like.
  5. Click “Save Changes” button to activate your protest.

That’s it! Easy-peasy activism right at your fingertips.

The “Stop Censorship” ribbon will display in the upper corner of your site and links to americancensorship.org. It will display until January 24, 2012 (the Senate vote date).

If you choose to do the blackout in addition to the ribbon, then we will black out your site from 8am to 8pm EST along with the official strike. You can customize the message that will appear on your blacked-out site to tell people why this issue is important to you. Your site will return to just displaying the ribbon after the strike is over.

I hope that a significant number of you on WordPress.com will join in this protest. Publishing freedom is a right we must protect.

And one last pitch: whatever you decide to do about your site, please take a few minutes to head over to americancensorship.org and take action. It only takes a few moments of your time to be an agent of change!

BloggerMint created a similar SOPA ribbon for websites hosted by Blogger.com, the other 800-pound giant website platform (hosting at least 50 million sites).

Here's a crash course to bring you up to speed on the issue.

I am going to answer you because the internet has so dramatically changed my life.

First from 1995 - 1999 I was experiencing infertility, and was on an online support group for it.  I personally had a pretty crappy doctor, but others online had better doctors and I was able to find out endocrine treatments their doctors were doing for them that would fix the problems I had.  I then went to an endocrinologist asking for the treatments, got them and I now have 3 children.

Over the years I have used it extensively to search on health problems and I have ended up finding natural remedies for our ailments, and learned to just avoid processed food as one fix.  These are not things that I'd have been able to find out other ways because doctors put you on drugs, not natural cures.

When I had to start making all our food from scratch because of our daughters allergies including trying to make baked goods without wheat, I was able to learn how on the internet.

The internet is tons of info at our fingertips.  Zerohedge is an example of that.  Without it my life would be much less healthy and much less fulfilling.  I am sorry for you that you don't get it.

the logical flaw in the argument you so ably countered is post hoc ergo propter hoc: after this because of this.  the advent of the internet coincided with the late stage of the "deflationary expansion" (if you will) that began in 1982 and peaked about 2000.  while the near universal adoption of the internet certainly put some corporate margins under pressure (msm), the internet could not fairly be said to have caused the current deflationary depression aggravated by epic crony capitalistic and governmental malfeasance.

You think countering a post hoc ergo propter hoc with a non sequitur somehow helps the discussion along??!

no non sequitur; totally on the point of why things deteriorated (criminally aggravated deflationary depression) which, by coincidence, occurred when the internet expanded.  i think you were just trying to find another latinate expression to use.  go back to sleeping on your doghouse.

Wed, 01/18/2012 - 07:36 | 2073797 i-dog
i-dog's picture

Firstly, my expression was Latin (as was yours), not "latinate". Perhaps you could communicate in English, rather than englishate, in future? Which segues (that's italianate, not Italian) me to:

Secondly, your semi-intelligible rant about the "deflationary depression" had absolutely nothing to do with the posts to which you replied! The OP complained about "quality of life" deteriorating -- presumably hinting at the drift from personal interactions and communal activities into anonymous interactions over the interwebs from basements -- while his respondent solely pointed out the advantages of the internet for her personal problem-solving ... neither of which had anything to do with a "deflationary depression". So your rant was a total non sequitur!

Thirdly, keep your trite insults to yourself, you imponderous twat!

Don't argue with the soylent green, it spoils the meat.  Another blind sheep that thinks they "must reproduce" but then fails to understand exponential equations, energy consumption, and really thinks that the quality of life will be better for their children.  Let them be "happy" in their ignorance, it makes their slaughter, and that of their children, so much easier.

Since all the usual suspects are on that list (MoveOn.org, Google, Wikipedia, Greenpeace, EFF, etc), I give the effort a 'D' (for distraction). And ... since when did the US .gov determine the use or otherwise of the intertubes by the remaining 6.7 billion of the world?!

BTW, the criminal occupation gubmint in DC is not going to shut down their only means of communicating with their scattered military bases and covert operations teams around the world. They just want you to think that they will in order to stifle dissent.

" .... On other other hands, I predict ...."

I agree with the sentiment but not with this particular stunt. "The government wants to close down the internet. Oh...I've got a good idea...I'll close it down for them!!"

What kind of a brain comes up with that crap?

Shutting down ISPs around DC and critical US nodes for the day would be a good idea. Shutting off access to the CIA's spying (Google) and propaganda (Wikipedia) arms for a day is a complete fucking waste of time.

Would the French resistance of WW2 have shut down their radio communications for a day in order to somehow embarrass the Germans into relaxing anti-resistance efforts??? FFS!!!!

The Resistance needs to keep sites like ZH (ummm....I can't think of any others right now) open, no matter what, so that those of us with a supply of red pills can anonymously communicate with each other. Those, like yourself, who swallow copious quantities of blue pills and fear the criminals in DC, can take a day off googling and twitting if they wish.

The majority of my friends, real or on CIA sponsored social networking sites, had no idea what SOPA or PIPA is. That is until this 'stunt' garnered attention from the MSM. I think those of us who seek alternative news sources and are 'awake' sometimes project as to 'We already know. This is stupid.' But stunts like this are not for us. It is for the 80% who are clueless.

My 16-year old, and all his friends, are very aware of this. They're all writing to Congressmen (as if that will do anything, but they gotta try). Papa raised them right: be aware when your freedoms are stolen.

Wed, 01/18/2012 - 16:18 | 2075572 akak
akak's picture

But history has shown, over and over through countless examples, that of the 80% who are initially or normally clueless, maybe only 20% of those can even potentially be woken up, while 40% will remain clueless or indifferent no matter what, and the other 40% will invariably chose to side with their oppressors.

The stunt gets the users of those sites to send email to their reps about it.

Wed, 01/18/2012 - 05:55 | 2073738 i-dog
i-dog's picture

Pray tell, Dolly, which reps take any notice of constituents' wishes? Did massive public opposition stop them going into Iraq? ... or issuing TARP? ... or continuing to bail out the [foreign] banks? ... or renewing the "Patriot" Act? ... or, or, or......

Whenever public opposition rises beyond an acceptable threshold, they just launch a false-flag and an immediate follow-up media propaganda offensive and quickly move public opinion back in favour ... then do it anyway. The lack of a media propaganda offensive is a surefire indicator that public opposition is well below their tolerable threshold.

Like I said: A ring-fencing/DOS of D.C. internet exits by Anon/4chan/whatever would be a far more effective and newsworthy display of displeasure. Imagine the consternation in DC if the Criminals-in-Congress couldn't eTrade, or email their NY broker, to place insider trades?!

Got to agree with you i-dog. A stunt of this sort is rather pointless and ineffective.

They are simply going on strike!

It reminds me of the comical situation in the book Hitch-Hikers guide to the Galaxy where the Philosophers Guild threaten to go on indefinite strike, if the meaning of Life the Universe and Everything is revealed, and the computer 'Deep-Thought' incisively says, "Do you think anyone will notice? To which they comeback, "oh it'll hurt buddy! ... it'll hurt!"

It's silly and it even looks weak and pathetic. What do I care about copyright law and enforcement? I never have and I never will.

I'm going to do whatever I like, no matter what.

Sooner or later, PIPA or not, the U.S. government will put an end to the law of the jungle on the Internet and no one will ever be able to stop that from happening.

What history teaches us is that anarchy never survives. A natural order always emerges from the chaos. And when that time will come for the Internet, it will be the end of playtime for Ronpaulites, conspiracy theorists, paedophiles, libertarians, copyrighted content pirates, fetishists, white nationalists, hackers, terrorists and other weirdos.

I hope you've enjoyed it while it lasted though, freaks.
