2011 Greatest Hits: Presenting The Most Popular Posts Of The Past Year
Continuing our tradition of listing what according to Zero Hedge readers were the key news events of the year for the third year in a row (2009 and 2010 can be found here and here), we present, as is now customary, the most popular posts of the year as determined by the number of page views, or said otherwise - by the readers themselves. So without further ado, here are this year's top 20.
- In 20th place, with 70,324 reads, and confirming that in addition to all the vast changes in the financial arena (recall that the downgrade of the US was the straw that broke the camel's back and literally broke the market as well), 2011 was a year of vast geopolitical tensions, fears and overhauls, we have "Aircraft Carrier CVN-77 Parks Next Door To Syria Just As US Urges Americans To Leave Country "Immediately"." Needless to say, Syria will most likely be the unofficial conduit to a military escalation involving Iran. Unless of course the foreplay is skipped and the US military industrial complex skips right to the main course.
- In 19th place, with over 71,000 reads, we brought to our readers' attention that in addition to being the year of outright denial, there were glimmers of acceptance that the status quo is failing and no matter what, a new regime will be needed... but only after a "global financial apocalypse takes place" - behold: "Step Aside BBC "Trader": Head Of UniCredit Securities Predicts Imminent End Of The Eurozone And A Global Financial Apocalypse."
- If there was one person of the year award, it likely would have to go to Kyle Bass, who at 18th place with 72.5k reads have our readers "Some words of advice." It is not that Bass discovered something huge or ground-shattering in 2011 - to the contrary - he continued his slow, steadfast unraveling of the broken system, and unlike other flip-floppers stuck to his story. He was proven right in many ways in 2011. Will he be proven even more right in 2012, with a collapse of Japan to follow that of Europe? Stay tuned and find out.
- The 17th most popular post, with over 73,000 reads came from an unsuspecting source, the BBC, which continued the theme of unexpected confessions from the strangest of sources, when an IMF advisors said that "In The Absence Of A Credible Plan We Will Have A Global Financial Meltdown In Two To Three Weeks." No credible plan was found, and the meltdown was delayed yet again, courtesy of last minute global bailout measures by the Fed, although the half lives of such interventions are getting shorter and shorter. How long will the next such bailout persist? Or that one after?
- The hacker group anonymous achieved its fair share of notoriety in 2011, as the 16th most popular post of 2011 indicates, with just under 74,000 reads, most recently by hacking the server of Stratfor and exposing the personal information of all of its tens of thousands of clients. However, it first came to the scene earlier in the year, when it released a clip threatening it would "Brings Peaceful Revolution To America: Will Engage In Civil Disobedience Until Bernanke Steps Down." Bernanke did not step down, nor was civil disobedience unleashed, and many of the bombastic calls fell well short, although for Anonymous to truly make an impression on the public it likely will have to step up its game in 2012. Surely a hacked FRBNY email account or two would bring the group new heights in notoriety.
- At 15th place we get another appearance by Kyle Bass, even if indirect this time, whose suggestion that The University of Texas take delivery of $1 billion in physical gold, was followed through, and resulted in a post with 74,500 reads. Oddly enough, Bass' advice reverberated in Latin America, where Venezuela's Hugo Chavez did the same by demanding the country's physical gold be shipped back to the country from the London cartel. It begs the question - just how much unrehypothecated gold is out there?
- In 14th place, the always colorful, unabashed and very much outspoken Euroskeptic Nigel Farrage, and Herman van Rompuy nemesis generated 80,000 reads and came one step closer to being proven correct when months ahead of the Euro's 10 year anniversary, he basically confirmed that the Euro is a dead currency. Judging by the record number of EUR shorts in the last week of 2011, at least the speculators out there agree with him.
- In number 13, with 83,500 reads, the broad population proved it was starved for fair and objective coverage of the first truly important event in the Arab Spring when the Egyptian system was toppling, as the dominoes of discontent, with or without the boots on the ground, were starting to drop, first in Tunisia, then Egypt, then Libya. Is Syria next? And if so, what about Iran? One thing is certain - the geopolitical space will be quite hot in 2012 as well, the main question remains: when will the Arab Spring become a European season?
- Number 12 reminded us that while one of the main events of 2010, the BP oil spill in the GOM, may have been plugged, the fears remain after it was reported that "Possible New Oil Spill 100 By 10 Miles Reported in Gulf Of Mexico." That nearly 85,000 people were concerned enough to click on this post confirms that when it comes to offshore drilling in the US, nothing has been resolved.
- At number 11 Jim Rogers proved his predictive acumen, when the former Soros partner warned the public days before siver hit $50 per ounce when he commented "On Triple Digit Silver And Issues Warning: "Parabolic Moves Always Collapse." Hopefully the 83,300 people who read the post took heed and booked profits. On the other hand, with central banks only starting to really loosen monetary policy and print in the end of 2011 (the ECB along expanding its balance sheet in 6 months more than the Fed did in all of QE1), it is guaranteed that Rogers' warning will be repeated at least once again in 2012.
- Number 10 showed us two things: that things are never what they seem on the surface, and that the conventional media is a joke and a conflicted farce, better suited for comedy than distributing the news when "Former CIA Analyst Tells Truth About Libya Intervention On CNN, Hilarity Ensues." Nearly 87,000 readers took great delight to watch the unmasking of the Mainstream Media's stupidity and bias.
- At number 9 was the news following the aftermath of the MF Global debacle, that instead of making liquidity more valuable, the CME decided to double down, and allow the same form of liquidity largesse that took down Corzine's house of rehypothecated cards, to be burden-shared by its own clients who had to endure the lowering of initial margins on all trades. That the CME left some first year clerk to draft the press release which simply said that that Initial and Maintenance margin would be the same, only to have to re-issue a PR the next day when it became completely unclear just what the CME's goals were- capital preservation or taking even more systemic risk -was just the cherry on top. This is what 93,000 readers discovered when they read "CME Goes To Collateral DefCon 1: Makes Maintenance Margin Equal To Initial For... Everything!?"
- Wikileaks proved to be a bust in 2011, when it released virtually nothing actionable, although those who sifted through its archives, including the 94,000 or so others who joined in when the discovery went viral, found some pearls such as this one which disclosed "The Reason(s) Behind China's Shadow Gold Buying Spree" It was also the 8th most read item on Zero Hedge in 2011.
- Next, we are reminded that more than anything, the biggest ongoing event of 2011 was the slow, methodological and relentless collapse of Europe. Only instead of the usual bullshit headlines and rumors, the reason why "Europe According To..." was the 7th most popular post, is that it took the same bias and prejudice that will never allow Europe to be the same integrated NWO globalist dream that the US melting pot has become, and flipped it on its head, exposing the sheer humor at the stupidity of it all.
- If there is anything unique about 2011 (and as everyone knows by now, from market terms it is as if 2011 never happened), it is that it ushered some very unwitting people on the stage of global opinion, such as Ann Barnhardt of Barnhardt Capital Management. The 6th most read post of the year with over 101k reads was Ann Barnhardt, quite a colorful character on a normal day, saying that "The Entire System Has Been Utterly Destroyed By The MF Global Collapse." And while some may have taken her admonition for nothing more than a extremist joke, Banrhardt's warning that all modern capital markets are a scam is absolutely valid. Expect many more MF Global-type collapses in the future to merely validate her argument which caused Barnhardt to close down her own brokerage.
- In 5th spot, we once again go back to Europe, this time by way of UBS, which took the art of Mutual Assured Destruction to a whole new level "Bring Out Your Dead - UBS Quantifies Costs Of Euro Break Up, Warns Of Collapse Of Banking System And Civil War." While the final outcome of Europe is certain, what UBS did is squarely put a bulls eye on its own back, confirming that should the MF Global trade, namely betting the ranch on global moral hazard, fail, and a Eurozone break ups follows, UBS will likely be the first bank to be shorted to death by the global vigilante squad which forgives any central bank insanity, but never forgets.
- In 4th place was the resurgence of the topic of shadow banking, aka the $20+ trillion unregulated funding system, read synthetic uncollateralized leverage, which as we have been warning for two years, is the true cause of fear at the heart of modern capital markets. MF Global's unwind exposed two things: the rampant use of off-balance sheet vehicles known as repos (entirely unregulated), and the fact that any bank which wishes to commit fraud would simply go to the UK and do anything and everything perfectly legally courtesy of absolutely no oversight, until everything collapses in a smoldering heap. Zero Hedge also brought to the vernacular two other terms: rehypothecation, and its bigger bother, hyper rehypothecation. To find out why shadow banking will likely be the financial topic of 2012 read, together with 105,000 others, "Why The UK Trail Of The MF Global Collapse May Have "Apocalyptic" Consequences For The Eurozone, Canadian Banks, Jefferies And Everyone Else"
- Third place goes to "China Proposes To Cut Two Thirds Of Its $3 Trillion In USD Holdings" which with 109,000 reads, shows that when it comes to the Nash Equilibrium between China and the US, the balance is always very tenuous. Whether or not China will indeed proceed and dump US paper, knowing full well it would likely be committing an act of self-destruction in the process, is unclear. We do know that China recently did in fact dump US Treasurys, and we also know that as Zero Hedge reported, in the past month foreigners sold a record amount of US paper. And without incremental demand for US paper from abroad, it only leaves the US, i.e., the Federal Reserve-Primary Dealer system left to monetize America's debt. Certainly QE X will be a topic of great debate and discussion in the coming year, if for no other reason than the US needs to fund another $1.2 trillion in deficit spending. And if there is nobody else willing to buy 10 Year US paper at 1.84%, Ben Bernanke will have no choice but to step in.
- The first runner up for most popular post of 2011, with 140,000 reads, was the announcement that "Trading Of Over The Counter Gold And Silver To Be Illegal Beginning July 15" - while the argument given by the official entities was that this is to protect investors from predator brokers, many saw into this yet another attempt of capital controls, and a further limitation of how, where and why one can trade their precious metals. And while executive order 6102: "the return" it was not, at least not yet, once the year end hedge fund liquidation phase ends, and PMs resume their surge ever higher, we would certainy not put it beyond our leaders to be forced to eventually confiscate all the freely held gold and silver in circulation. It has been done before; it will be done again.
- And our most popular post of the year, with 148,000 reads, was "BBC Speechless As Trader Tells Truth: "The Collapse Is Coming...And Goldman Rules The World" in which Zero Hedge brought FX trader, who contrary to attempts of discrediting, was not a member of some comedy troupe, Alessio Rastani 15 minutes of fame for no other reason than, in a few short paragraphs, daring to explain all the ways in which the system is broken, where it is headed, and who stands to profit from it all.
Unfortunately the trend from 2009 to 2010 and now, to 2011, is quite obvious: the world is getting ever more insolvent, only this time instead of banks, entire countries are or will soon file for bankruptcy. Which means that taxpayers of the other solvent countries will be on the hook to bail out the transgressors, until finally only one country is left standing. In the meantime any and all diversion tactics will be used to redirect attention from where it deserves to be: the increasingly more disastrous condition of the Welfare State/Banker Oligarchy status quo, and the inevitable warfare to follow: first currency, then trade, then all out.
While we will not predict what happens to the market in 2012 one thing is certain: the main topics discussed in the past three years will continue to dominate the airwaves and things will get far worse before they get better. As a result, five things that we believe will happen almost without a shadow of a doubt: volatility in 2012 will break all records, retail investors will continue to leave markets in droves, correlations will remain at all time highs, politicians will suckle more than ever at the Wall Street teat knowing well the party is soon ending, and lastly, central planning will hit unseen levels. Everything else is noise and soundbites.
It is on this rather grim background that we wish all our readers the best of luck and success in 2012. The final prediction for the new year we will make with 100% certainty is that Zero Hedge will be there each and every day helping readers expose the fallacies, fiction and fraud that the system is reduced to (ab)using each and every day just to kick the can down the road for a few more hours.

40,000 new laws for the new year.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, son.
Unfortunately, we don't get a break for ignorance of the lawmakers, either.
"If you sit by the river long enough, you will see the body of your enemy float by" - Japanese Proverb
Transition is an element of cosmic law, nothing in our capacity for understanding is truly static.
Attention is the most powerful tool we have available. Like any tool, it can be helpful or harmful.
Perhaps obsessing over the material body makes one prone to illness. And maybe focusing constantly on one's mental prowess causes psychological disorders. Many have noticed how the scientific discipline of Psychology doesn't generally attract the most well adjusted individuals (yes, we talk treason here. come and stay a while). Certainly focusing on the ego leaves one prone to a variety of maladies from sex-addition, drug and alcohol abuse, narcissism and the like. I even make it a point to not allow flattery or praise to move me in any particular direction since that would make me equally susceptible to ridicule and disapproval. So is there a worthy point of focus in which to rest our attentive being somewhere in the vast expanse of the universe? I believe there is though that's the focus of other writings.
So it follows that what we choose not to pay attention to, both individually and on a collective level will wither and die on the vine.
The petty tyrants who plague every workplace in the land; they are energized on some level when you are driving home from work thinking about what incorrigible assholes they are. The madder you get and the longer you think about it, the more you are assisting their nefarious agendas. Imagine if they couldn't drive anyone to distraction but were instead allowed to work themselves in circles to no avail. In receiving no energy, they fade away and everyone is better for it. I had a manager once named who saw her position as a little empire as many managers do. She took it to another level though and treated most everyone like adolescent children, subjected people to public ridicule and delighted in making the workplace so miserable that people would quit. When I assessed the situation, I realized that her only hold was psychological, everyone just assumed she was commanding and capable. It turns out she didn't have any special skills applicable to the organization, but she did kick up dust to obfuscate matters and she kept the environment comfortable for her games. Standing my ground was a severe transgression to her because everyone was supposed to bow and I refused. To make a long story short, by employing the attitude of indifference and not playing into her dance of propagating stress, a first domino was tipped. Others caught on and in time she was relieved of her management title. She maintained her psychological hold on another low level manager or two to keep a warring faction surrounding her, but in time, even that was shattered. Eventually everyone signed in relief of what became a rightly tolerable working atmosphere in what was once known throughout the city as a place that you didn't want to work. Not only because of her, but a string of despots in that department that ended with her. Now let us see if this technique can't be also on a macro scale.
The clay-footed power structure permeating society today thrives on fear and subjugation. First understand that these are not the proper heirs to the humanitarian advances of Western Civilization. They wish to relegate us and our free sons and daughters to a neo-feudalist society in serf positions where they may harvest our livelihoods without recourse. They are usurpers who have been allowed to establish their hedonistic rats nest due to a societal base comfortable in rampant consumerism and a dizzying spiral of meaningless diversions. Their Achilles heel is simply enough people calling bullshit and saying no more.
No, I am not a consumer or a subject.
No, your sports contests and retard-laden Reality shows are not worthy of my attention.
No, I don't fear the concept of terrier-ism so that you can fund the next security state overhaul.
No, your Board of Directors quarterly earnings are not to be purchased with the lives and liberties of others.
No, Corporations are neither "people" nor entitled to "free speech".
No, you do not represent me. You have forfeit that right due to gross negligence.
In the divine power that comes along with consciousness, I beseech you, do not give that up for anything. That is treasure and far more so than the illegitimate Federal Reserve Notes that were plotted on Jeckyll Island by blackguards and implemented on the sly in a nearly empty Congressional session and signed by a regretful President Wilson. It was a roundabout theft of sovereignty that has hardly been contested since but which does nullify an entire system, like if Obungalo was truly born in Kenya, that would Constitutionally nullify every signature, statement and order put forth from his bankster-manicured nails. Who is going to call bullshit on that? The Supreme Court? The "Honorable" Senators from Connecticut? Don't hold your breath. But I will. And I'm pretty sure you will to if you have been able to surpass the fears both real and artificial that casts a giant shadow over our every step. I am past anxiety and worry and just like a flipping a switch I no longer get tension headaches or digestive problems. And I'm beholden to no man. That is liberation. That is a modern slave revolt.
I guarantee there will be more Protect Corporate Revenues Acts that get blasted through by the filthy liars in Congress. Every daylight theft from the emboldened mafia syndicate will get noticed by more and more people. We will no longer subject ourselves to the construction of a miserable police state. We will render tyrants a non-factor and the gods will favor this stance. So Ron Paul doesn't get the nomination? Then I have no problem sitting this election out, and yes I still have the right to complain. And if he turns out to be a Hopey McChange who can be bought, then we'll find one who is incorruptible. We won't sign on to tea parties and occupy movements if they can be bought and sold by the same assholes who drove us to ruin and struggle ardently to remain at the controls. Fuck that blue, I say.
Yes, life is transitory and there is nothing to fear. There is also a cosmic energy that pulses within all of us who can lay claim to a soul (and indeed not all can). This, you cannot force but you can make conditions right to allow it to come to you. Be kind and forgiving and love because that is the grand purpose. But let us return to those ideals once we have washed our hands of the stains we bear for holding up the kleptocracy. There is work to be done!

Ted Kaczynski may be innocent.
There's certainly a "teachable moment" in that guy that's fed sure.
Ted might might still be in his little hut on the continental divide if he'd had access to the internet.
Think about all the little would-be Teddie boys and girls getting their necessary therapy on sites like ZH.
Mr No Volume, that is a nice little bit of truth right their, right on the nailhead, but I doubt if Wilsons regrettes were anything but theatre and assume that he retired quite wealthy, another rich commie, methinks.
Best wishes for the new year and to all the ZH'oids that are always learnin me right proper.
"If you sit by the river long enough, you will see the body of your enemy float by"
2011 - "If you sit by the river long enough, you will become irradiated"
There... Fixed it...
Yeah, but if it makes my pee glow, that'd be worth it.
We need to focus your energy on a project ! If you do it well, then we will know you are really about individual freedom ! I suggest you end the USPS or completely privatize it ! The government has no business delivering our mail ! The free market can demonstrate the superiority of competition ! Report back when you have accomplished this mission and we'll talk about future projects to return freedom to the people on this Liberal Plantation ! Monedas 2012 Comedy Jihad Dismantling The Liberal Plantation And Freeing The Slaves !
Chinese proverb- Li Po.
Corporations indeed are people....and because of their demographic numbers....they have a little more right to free speech ! A sports team is a corporation....they have a right individually and collectively to free speech ! Put down the crack pipe ! You are not pro freedom as a Libertarian would define it ! Just another Socialist disguised by Guru rhetoric !
bla bla bla:
...and are a little more deserving of euthanasia.
The "Youth in Asia" deserve the right to form corporations, too ! Old Bubble-Up is confused because he heard some Socialist on a soap box in Hyde park say a corporation was a "fictitious person" ! The only thing "bubbling up" is in his crack pipe ! Inducing a "Mental Meltdown" ! A corporation is just a partnership that has gotten a little big to manage....so you have to make some rules and take a vote in the club house once in a while.....it's a very human, people oriented thing....it is ! Dogs and Cats don't form corporations !
I really liked most of your post.
It appears you prefer apathy, but then you call to action. Although I like your theory of not giving them anger back, I think that mode of autopilot has been used by most Americans since 1900, and it hasn't worked so well. Yet many of the people who were alive while some of the worst laws were passed still just sit back and complain in their living room about it, and then consider a guy like Newt Gingrich to be president after the damage he's done. Or care about the opinion of GHW Bush..
Regardless of the reason why - sociopaths, think of us as subspecies who need to be controlled, etc, the guys running the show are going to keep bending us over no matter how much we pretend to not care. I do not think apathy is the answer.
Don't attempt to legitimize aimless, drug induced ramblings by pretending to respond to them ! The Socialist disease we are suffering from wouldn't have advanced if we had defended our right to bear arms more rigorously ! We are now in a situation where we may have to resort to an armed uprising if we can't vote the Socialists out of office ! The military-industrial complex plus the welfare complex, plus the NEA complex, etc. have a strangle hold on the producers ! 51%+ are allied with the Plantation Management and the rest of us are the slaves ! If we can't reverse the trend to Socialism with the vote....our only option will be slave revolt ! We shouldn't wait too long or we'll even lose our ability to revolt....like the "subjects" in North Korea ! The jury is still out on the Arab Spring.....I don't have much hope that limited government Libertarian democracies are going to spring up ! Most likely they will find new ways to oppress themselves with Socialist stupidity ! I think McVeigh and Braevik have made an important contribution with their wake up calls to action ! We defeat Socialism or we descend into a new Dark Age ! The Socialists will really get active when their ponzi financing scheme collapses ! This is the lull before the shit storm ! Braevik will be kept in mental institution.....to shut him up ! The MSM and Wicked Leaks will show no journalistic curiosity ! Maybe he could post on ZH ? He must have something to say.....his assault on Socialism was daring, well planned and successful....dare I say more brilliant than anything Jesse Jackson could pull off.....sorry, I'm frothing a little ! He was no bumbling underpants bomber ! I'd like to hear what's on his mind ! Will his defense team be able to get his message out ? We had to endure that jack ass O.J. Simpson, forever ! I hope he demands a full. public trial ! Anderson Cooper......no.....not that stuttering, whimpering idiot....Rush would cover it.....or is even he owned by TPTB ? Comrades !!! We have to cover Braevik's trial right here on ZH ! This is the only media that can handle the job ! Happy New Year ! Monedas 2012 Comedy Jihad Reporting From Oslo, Norway ! PSA: They could hold the trial in that hall where they had all the African bitches receiving their Nobel peace prizes ! That's the ticket ! Put that hall to good use ! A forum for Anders Behring Braevik (pronounced BRAVEik) !
snarc: What does any of this have to do with the Reverned Timmy and his tax code?
non-snarc: True communisim would require that all of us would be forced be SEC-TRES for a day, and then sell all of our positions tax free like Hank "bazooka" Paulson.
or we can elect Ron Paul.
No soul here. I re-hypothecated mine when I realized the prospect of spending all of eternity with those claiming to have one was just too damn unattractive.
I bought a bag of Cheetos with the proceeds. Pretty good deal, all in all.
You are being exceedingly bad this evening. I like it.
I hear the unwind on that deal could really be a bitch. Then again, it's all on paper anyway. You won't owe a thing, just like the rest of the elite. I hear Satan has folks it D.C. You should be good to go.
You should sell CDS on it. You know you plan to default.
Happy New Year MsCreant!
I've got a headstart on 2012, since it's already midday out in these parts. Sadly, no new perspective...world looks about the same. At least it's warm.
By the way, the ones who bought rights to my soul are not fearing default; they're fearing delivery.
that is probably the most awesome post i've read on here. thank you.
I'm surprised the most popular story of the year had 148,000 reads. While that is a big number I would have guessed much higher. A fair number of the 148,000 probably work for TBTF banks. No wonder TPTB can do pretty much what they want. I hope the reader trend is still heading higher. Thanks for another year of education ZH. Happy New Year!
Do you expect Americans to read. They would rather watch the fucking Kardashians and crap on TV that will keep the masses occupied while the looting goes on.
Agreed. I still would have guessed higher given the size of the potential global audience. But I imagine ZH's influence branches out quite nicely, e.g. Ron Paul.
I say this often, so some of you will have heard it from me, but I'm repeating it because I feel it's so important.
10% of the people determine what 90% believe. That's why those million people reading ZH, whose opinions will undoubtedly influence others in their own lives, others whose opinions will go on to influence another 10 million people, a 100 million, and so on. If any one has read or heard of that book the Tipping Point, you may remember how it went into all kinds of details of how trends spread like viruses, by a select few that have contact with many. Influencers are more powerful than those that follow. That's why, no one is wasting their time opining on these blogs, or in general. It not only feels good to communicate, but it's also doing good, and more good than one could possibly imagine.
All of the awareness of exactly how corrupt and broken the system is, is really spreading, like a virus, and the awareness of those infected with the truth bug, is nothing short of a sort of pre-marketing stage for a bigger ground swell of things to come. I predict that what's happening now, will prepare the ground for improving our currently broken system. This kind of stuff takes time, but as long as people are moving the conversation in the right direction, this will create a change in the general attitudes towards the system itself, and this, will have more impact in the long run, than any violent change at the top ever could.
So much truth to be found on ZH,Swani.
I consider myself to be a Motivated Virus speading the seed of the disease known as common sense and can boast that I have opened a few eyes this year, a word here and a DVD there, people are getting hip to the Grand Scam.
Ron Pauls inevitable victory in November will be the defining EVENT of an historical moment that will be remembered in history books of the future as THE INTERNET REFORMATION.
Word of mouth and access to facts for the general populace will move mountains, but we must all consider it a duty and a job, to influence thought by any means available, with passion and God given Cajones.
The occasional visit and comment on yahoo finance (and other cheap blogs) name dropping zerohedge can't hurt.
It can't hurt, but Yahoo Finance is deleting posts based on whatever paradigm they got from the latest staff meeting of idiots. Yahoo is the pits, whether it's their Finance blog or any of the idiotic articles they post on endlessly changing categories of "life' or "culture".
Agreed. They shill for Fraud Street. Censorship of comments appears systematic.
When you wonder why the sale of pitchforks and torches is flat, use that figure as an over-approximation of the number of people who realize their need.
I am Jobe
I give Americans a lot more credit that what you seem to be giving them. People in the UK are taxed to death, they are constantly getting screwed by the government and do you see them coming together to fight the system in any kind of energetic way? No. I am not saying that there aren't good people in the UK trying to do just that, just that it's not as energetic. Everyone just accepts getting screwed over. Americans don't, sure some do, but if anyone just looks, they can see that people are doing things to help each other and their communities fight this tyranny every day.
Some examples: James Koutulas created the Commodities Customer Coalition and is fighting for the commodities customers that were looted, he is asking brokers to boycott the guilty parties in protest. We have people like Anne Barnhart getting on the radio waves and saying she is refusing to pay her Federal taxes in protest and also asking people to boycott in response. That blogger Mandelman is helping people avoid illegal foreclosures and helping families to modify their loans.
More and more investigative journalists are taking it upon themselves to tell the truth in their own blogs, writing books, speaking out and foregoing the traditional corporate media channels.
There are many groups of Americans, all over the country doing things to resist what is happening. You can find them on sites like Fed Up USA and others.
The questions we should all ask ourselves when we criticise our fellow Americans for their complacency, is what are we doing on a daily basis, and are we doing as much as we could?
http://mandelman.ml-implode.com/2011/12/
http://www.fedupusa.org/
Americans are not in the humiliating situation the Syrians are in......where they are getting shot in the streets like dogs ! We Americans can take some of the credit whenever people rise up....we invented it !
The Kardashian's are phucking? WHERE?! WHERE?!
That 148,000 probably includes multiple reads by the same individuals, many with floating ISPs, kind of like the way NAR quantifies home sales.
...except if NAR was keeping count, it would be 600 billion unique views for the page.
Thank you, Tyler and company.
Over this last year, it was painful to see that even the supposedly juxtaposed outlets CNN vs. Fox. Newsmax/Washington Review vs. MSNBC/Huffpost all collapsed on each other instead of presenting the full spectrum.
And the death knell for these Hillary and Gingrich D.C. wonky, grabass, mouthpeice networks is going to be their combined failed opposition to Ron Paul, and Buddy Roemer. The single most memorable thing for me this year was a segment of Buddy Roemer on CNBC squawk box with Joe, MC2, and a couple of others.
Similar to Ron Paul he debated professionally without falling into any traps or just taking the reach around. Immediately after the interview, the squawk team said "He's got an MBA from Harvard, but not a real MBA from harvard like we have" Classic. There was a similar interview with some barbie getting pissed off at a fiscally conservative congressman about the stimulus. She says in frustration "But do you have any education in economics?" He no-sale replies "PhD cum laude". She then wimpered like he killed her puppy.
Thank you Tyler(s) and all of ZH!
My thanks to the Tylers and everybody else who makes this site happen. Also thanks to the fine community of bitchez who keep the discussions lively and edumacational. Stay frosty, people. 2012's gonna be action-packed...

Thanks ZH, and too all you posters!! You have made it one exciting year. Good luck in 2012!

If ZH hedge has 150.000 reads on one article alone,
means almost a million folow this site, great work Tyler.
Happy new year from Holland,ye we are everywhere.
I would guess they get 2-3 million hits a day.
Helped everyone I know, thank you.
If ZH hedge has 150.000 reads on one article alone,
means almost a million folow this site, great work Tyler.
---
There are a million people who can read english??? UFB!!!... Get the fuck right out of town!!! (I was convinced there were less than a coupla hundred thou that could read the drive thru menu at Taco Bell...
We need an update from Tyler on that data. Last I recollect, 6-9 months ago, Tyler remarked that ZH had surpassed 1 million "unique" viewers per month which is very impressive. Regulars and repeat viewers no doubt account for much much more.
As the financial crises leads to sovereign/bank collapses in earnest, many many more people will find ZH. That's when they will realize they've been lulled and duped by the other great betrayal, which is the TPTB-owned Mainstream Media. Frist they'll get really pissed, then there is going to be a long overdue reckoning against the MSM and TPTB.
Thank you Zero Hedge. And Happy New Year Bitchez!
good stuff on a continual forward basis .. but the going back and posting the order of old stuff and the news worthy yesterdays news is a bit thread worn.
for weeks the news oullet with nothing better to say . throw out bits of yesterday and still nothing of vast importance .. or even unvast importance.. .
the human tendency to visit the old . and rub the nose in the smells like a dog sniffing its wanderings . and excretment that linger in the present .
Man still sniffs the behind of yesterday but never learns.
the lessons of history are the pizz of a nation in heat . that pretends of nothing and gives phase to the notion that we learn from the past as we as a nation and world hurl into the future with the stain of the past.
We cross the river of learning on the back of an alligator thinking it is a log . sniffing the future with blind eyes of a forgetful dead man walking .
But oh how we love the past.. and plunge headlong into the dieing promise of lessons never learned .
Oh, Shut up! you and your stupid bloody alligator of analogies,
fuck off and take your alligator with you. Sniff this, thou unvast dumpster of shite.
I think his excrement of elaboration is floating down the river of rumination.
Happy New Year Zerohedge, Tylers, contributors, and commentators.
I'm reminded of a M*A*S*H quote from a Captain Hildebrand ...In my short stay here, I’ve seen textbook examples of neuroses,
psychoses, voyeurism, fetishism, and a few ‘isms’ I’ve never even heard of. The people here are mad, quite mad, all of them. They are impossible people in an impossible place doing impossible work. The only act I can think of that would be madder would be to break them up.
I'm in good company here.
I've been looking forward to this post for some time.

If some unpleasent fukks decide to challenge the DNS name (www.zerohedge.com) I have got to figure Tyler has a server in Iceland, Sweden, Switzerland, or some other bastion of Liberty (not the USA).
Read on!
I believe their server is in Amsterdam.
Geolocation Information Country: Switzerland Latitude: 47 Longitude: 8Happy New Year to ZH and company, including the Tylers, the contributors, readers and commentors. It requires all to make this place what it is, and I am confident it will continue to grow and get better. I do miss the old crew that doesn't post anymore, but I'm sure they still check in - HNY to them to, hope your all doing well.
Look forward to 2012 and how the Hedge covers all the news and chaos. I'm sure the contributors will continue their work well done, which will only help us continue to grow. The more people who choose places like this and not the MSM is a leap forward for our entire county. The MSM is crap as we all know - it's up to We the People to change that - this is a start.
Great site, great contributors, and great people - I'll continue to #Occupy Zero Hedge.
How did it happen, this current march to that city of hell-on-earth, Serfdom, to which Zero Hedge brings us its 2011 greatest hits? Alexis de Tocqueville would have known: he wrote in 1840 in Democracy in America:
“I readily admit that public tranquility is a great good; but at the same time I cannot forget that all nations have been enslaved by being kept in good order. Certainly it is not to be inferred that nations ought to despise public tranquility; but that state ought not to content them. A nation which asks nothing of its government but the maintenance of order is already a slave at heart – the slave of its own well-being, awaiting but the hand that will bind it.
"By such a nation the despotism of faction is not less to be dreaded than the despotism of an individual. When the bulk of the community is engrossed by private concerns, the smallest parties need not despair of getting the upper hand in public affairs. At such times it is not rare to see upon the great stage of the world, as we see at our theatres, a multitude represented by a few players, who alone speak in the name of an absent or inattentive crowd: they alone are in action whilst all are stationary; they regulate everything by their own caprice; they change the laws, and tyrannize at will over the manners of the country; and then men wonder to see into how small a number of weak and worthless hands a great people may fall.”
It was the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1913 that turned democracy sour in America, when Congress gave away America’s freedom to international central bankers who could print free money for themselves at will but for which the rest of mankind must toil or trade assets.
Happy new year! Thank you ZH and good luck to everyone!
Regards from Norway, you are here as well.
Good to know that Norway is reading ZH!

2012, or when the shit hits the fan.
Yes, the Mayans knew it too, and I say that as a Christian believer, not as seen on television, do not underestimate the wisdom of certain peoples,
recorded history is more abundant than commonly thought, methinks.
Man is deceived, i believe, life is weirder than we think......

That's why there are no Mayas in Mexico anymore. They got on spaceships and left before it was to late.
Pffft, the Mayans were just credit traders. Couldn't hang around long enough to put on their short ;)
Nah, 2012 is just a conspiracy theory between the Mayans, the Hopi, the I Ching, St. John the Divine and most other star-gazers of the pre-modern age.
Oh, yeah, and them there Gregorian Monks that dated the modern calendar.
Thanks for everything Zerohedge.
Let's raise our glass' (of single malt Scotch) to the continued freedom to express our views on this unmitigated bastion of reality next year, and all the years to follow. And if that right is ever infringed upon, let us raise our rifles in alliance to bring it back.
Cheers! To all you bitchez!
Thank you Tyler, ZH Contributors, readers, and commentors.
Boss: "Is that your blood?"

Tyler I hope you ,your team, and all of my fight club brothers and sisters have a safe and prosperous new year.
HAPPY New year to all the ZH gang and to our cherished leader, Tyler. I hope that this next year is a whole bunch better for all of us than last year. More to the point and on message, I hope it is not worse. But as in the vows of Marriage, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, we are in this until the end.
Stay healthy, especially the Medicare bunch. I just had my yearly exam with my Doc of 25 years. The questions of yesteryears were not asked. Very Friendly but not a real search for problems, like it used to be. Not to complain about my free ride on your dollar, without it I would be very ill and in a nasty death spiral with skin cancer. Take care of your body and that of your children, the free ride is getting shorter and shorter. As it has to.
Enjoy every day that you can get out of bed and stand up straight. The day will come when that does not happen. Put one day in front of another and enjoy the day that you have.
Please try to understand the persons that are in this upcoming election and let your party loyalties be secondary to saving this Nation.

Make as many combat vets as you can your friends. Tread softly with them as they are deeply mistrustful. There is much you can learn from them and there is much they can learn from you. Know this, though: Most who loudly proclaim they're combat vets, aren't. Most of the time, they are hard to find, but when you do, understand they are treasures with instincts far beyond those of ordinary folks. Might not seem like it now, but they'll turn out to more valuable than any other asset, human, organic or inorganic when many are staggering around wondering what to do next.

"While we will not predict what happens to the market in 2012 one thing is certain: the main topics discussed in the past three years will continue to dominate the airwaves and things will get far worse before they get better. Everything else is noise and soundbites."
Isn't that a prediction?
DJIA at 32,000 is a market prediction.
How about "GLD Investments of Barneveld NY tops Goldman Sachs?" no? Didn't even make your top 20...let alone top 10. what a fraud you people are down there...on ANY side of ANY trade. I've seen your cookie cutter clowns up here...go ahead...throw your money in that blast furnace as well. I'm still trying to see how bringing the goon squad this time to literally "kill 'em" makes it all ok. Anywho...when in doubt "just steal the money." How sophisticated! I hope next year you and Oh Regional Indian can drop the links to your blogs.
Some of the blogs look like pathetic Facebook pages.
Just a comment please, don't need to know you or all your other thoughts.

A little less secure in respect to emplyment, income and personal safety
But a dog can still bark there. They may not have Wal-Mart but I don't really care.
After reading Zero Hedge for a year I have come to this conclusion. I am looking forward to stepping back into time into a place I am familiar with and know.
Good luck and good fortune to you! Smart move. We'll still hear from you I presume. I am doing the same but splitting time 50/50 here and there. Will have a place to go when SHTF and still have a 50% chance of being in the right place at the right time.
Where did you pick? I often think about it..Every time I see cameras and police- not my America anymone.

Only to see them get arrested under, wait for it, the NDAA act??

Happy new year to all
Zero Hedge has been a great source of information for me. The posts have been followed up with diligent facts. I also enjoy the input and humor from posted comments.
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!
What ever happen to all the great information on HFT and manipulation of the makets? I see all these stat's and charts of proven rule breaking using HFT and still nothing is changed.
Our work on HFT has concluded: by now it is common knowledge that HFTs manipulate the markets, frontrun orders, and generally suck broad liquidity out by providing parasitic bid/ask churn which in effect destroys market structure. While we were mocked for this assertion in 2009 it is now conventional wisdom. There is little we can add any more - the market is broken and everyone (that matters) agrees. It is only up to the SEC to continue doing nothing which is the surest way to "fix" the problem at its core. In the meantime, it gives us tremendous delight to highlight, week after week, the billions and billions in cash pulled out of funds by retail investors which is the only logical outcome when the broad public is aware the most corrupt entity in the market is now the regulator itself. It is now only a matter of time before the stock market cannibalizes itself and the HFTs are all out of business.
Eventually every system reverts to balance even if it means destroying itself in the process - alas HFT is that lethal virus that will destroy itself but only after wiping out the host organism.
Thanks for the reply. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEC, the FDA of the financial farm. Thanks for all your insight Tyler, your writing brings the only wealth that matters - knowledge. Thank you everyone for adding to the wisdom. Have a happy healthy new year
Fine work that was! +11

http://news.yahoo.com/obama-signs-bill-imposing-iran-banking-sanctions-201512631.html
And...ka-boom! Happy New Geopolitical Black Swan Year, bitchez!
U.S. imposes sanctions on banks dealing with IranBy Laura MacInnis | Reuters – 9 mins ago
HONOLULU (Reuters) - President Barack Obama signed into law on Saturday a defense funding bill that imposes sanctions on financial institutions dealing with Iran's central bank, while allowing for exemptions to avoid upsetting energy markets.
The sanctions target both private and government-controlled banks - including central banks - and would take hold after a two- to six-month warning period, depending on the transactions, a senior Obama administration official said.
Under the law, the president can move to exempt institutions in a country that has significantly reduced its dealings with Iran and in situations where a waiver is in the U.S. national security interest or otherwise necessary for energy market stability. He would need to notify Congress and waivers would be temporary, but could be extended.
Sanctioned institutions would be frozen out of U.S. financial markets.
"Our intent is to implement this law in a timed and phased approach so that we avoid repercussions to the oil market and ensure that this damages Iran and not the rest of the world," the senior U.S. official told Reuters.
Iran's central bank is the main conduit for Tehran's oil revenues.
Obama signed the bill during his vacation in Hawaii, just hours after Tehran said it had delayed planned long-range missile tests in the Gulf and signaled it was ready for fresh talks on its disputed nuclear program.
And I thought it was bad enough the NDAA got signed New Year's Eve when no one was paying attention. Now we're adding this beauty. Unbelievably scheduled.
Unless I'm mistaken, this was part of the NDAA.
Iran had already signalled that economic strangulation would be regarded as an act of war. TPTB soooo want to have that war.
And the very first shot fired is not a drone, not a missile, not a rifle bullet but what’s become the American tyrants’ weapon of choice – money.
How dare people say that the Zionists do not control the financial center of the U.S. government.
And this initial sanctioning of a sovereign nation by using money, not as a medium of exchange or a national currency, but as a weapon of war is exactly why the self-serving hands of the international bankers have to be removed from the treasury of the United States.
And how dare the neocons and the Zionists in America accuse the Obama Administration of being soft on Iran and a difficult partner with Israel. For Obama after all is the ideal puppet to carry out the Israeli foreign policy and pretend he is a president of the United States.
Like Iraq before it was sanctioned and then attacked by the U.S., neither has Iran taken one aggressive act against America. But initiating sanctions as in the case of Iraq marks America as the aggressor nation and since it ultimately involves critical supplies for Iran’s civilian populations as it did in the events in Iraq, it will lead to deaths and a progression toward poverty and deprivation for the Iranian people.
When former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was asked by Leslie Stahl regarding the U.S. sanctions on Iraq
"We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?’
Albright replied
"I think this is a very hard choice, but the price – we think the price is worth it.’
Michael S. Rozeff called this Satanism for what it is: “Here we have one of the highest American officials admitting to murders of innocents far in excess of any terrorist activities because she thinks it was worth it. If consciously bringing about the deaths of 500,000 children is not murder, what is? If this is not terrorism, what is?”
Merry Christmas,
J.R., and Sue Ellen.

"
Yours Truely, Yen Cross
Merry Christmas, Yen Cross,
For auld lang syne...
And a toast, to the coming year.
Happy New Year! my friend.
Can one of the conspiracy guys correct me if I'm wrong, but the Iran central bank is not a Rothschild central bank, correct?
The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran (CBI) is entirely government owned. The Globalists that control America’s central bank earlier targeted the 100% State Owned Central Bank of Libya.
Flashback:
Globalists Target 100% State Owned Central Bank of Libya (http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article27208.html)
Market Oracle UK | Mar 28, 2011
Currently, the Libyan government creates its own money, the Libyan Dinar, through the facilities of its own central bank. Few can argue that Libya is a sovereign nation with its own great resources, able to sustain its own economic destiny. One major problem for globalist banking cartels is that in order to do business with Libya, they must go through the Libyan Central Bank and its national currency, a place where they have absolutely zero dominion or power-broking ability. Hence, taking down the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) may not appear in the speeches of Obama, Cameron and Sarkozy but this is certainly at the top of the globalist agenda for absorbing Libya into its hive of compliant nations.
When the smoke eventually clears from all the cruise missiles and cluster bombs, you will see the Allied reformers move in to reform Libya’s monetary system, pumping it full of worthless dollars, priming it for a series of chaotic inflationary cycles.

"And if there is nobody else willing to buy 10 Year US paper at 1.84%, Ben Bernanke will have no choice but to step in. "
The most scary part of that story is that someone has unlimited money.
With 10 year paper trading @ 1.84% and inflation being far higher in % terms, what would prevent soverign countries to sell; Japan.?
I prognosticate that with the debt crisis hitting Japan it will by extension cause a US bond market conflagration. Ben can print the money to buy but with crude basing @ 100, the effects of printing will be more destructive to the economy. I guess the CME can continue playing this margin req. game but it may not be enough.
Ben is going to shock the economy into a state of locomotor ataxia.

Cute.
Happy 2012 everyone! Here's to a night, and maybe another day at least until Europe opens, of forgetting the mess the world is in. And thanks again ZH for compiling unfiltered news and bringing insight into how the markets REALLY work. Also to those fellow commenters that bring great thoughts and "lively" debate.
At the start of the new year, I think this is one of the least predictable because there are crises that should break and swamp the world economy but a host of the powerful determined to stop it. So it's no good predicting how it will come out. We know how the central banks will act, just not the trigger and timeline. We have no idea how the politicians will act, probably will act as little as possible. The third part is simple and elegant math which will force events and the timeline.
Another thing the world's mess does is puts me in a position to actively not want the solutions presented and actively want to see another leg down in what I consider this depression. It's not because I'm a sadist and I like to see pain, but it's the only way to wake people up from their comfortable existence. We're beginning to see the beginnings but not nearly enough. Another leg down may do it after how Wall St. and Washington exposes themselves more blantantly by the week trying with ever more frantic efforts to save the current system that represses almost everyone in favor of a few.
The other solution is the central banks and politicians winning another round, we somehow defy math, and plod along another year. This just builds the problem for exponentially more pain later and makes everyone less prepared for resource issues that are coming sooner rather than later.
Enough rant, Happy 2012.
Reading Durden makes you smarter.
After 3 years of selling my trading manual for over $200, I'm finally offering it to everybody for virtually free.
Enjoy. And Happy New Year!
Tyler, followed ZH for some time; your work on HFT is certainly a top-drawer item. Everyone who visits this site is so much more enlightened than they were in 2007-08 when media heads talked other people's books and lauded their accomplishments. Now ZH get regular press; good on you.
Much luck in the future; meaning when prior preparation meets opportunity. And there are many; nice to see the gutsy demeanor.
By the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Chief
Twice a Day
The ABC-Yahoo news partnership was one of the low points of 2011. Everywhere you look, the police state is staring you back in the face. Creepy outlook. ZH would likely get the wikileaks treatment if it became too popular. The last thing TPTB want is real transparency, and the MSM has been very obliging.
I hope somebody is archiving and printing ZH for future reference. When they find you through your telescreen and bring some NDAA-style "rendition with extreme prejudice", and then confiscate all your fiat and gold and base, now belong to THEM...then I think paper copies of Tyler's "truthiness" will circulate like banned religious texts used to. Yes it's a band of brothers and the chronicles of extreme truthiness need to live on....
Yes, the truthiness is palpable and textureized like fresh green shoots. I still have a tube/valve based telescreen with a current loop interface to a paper tape puncher to archive on papyrus. I'm working on the cuneiform tablet interface but the ASR-33 teletype screws up on Form Feeds.
Here's to 2012 with ZH. Thanks TD et al.
Thanks ZH for helping kick the can "UP" the road.

Thanks to the Tylers. This is the first site I hit everyday. Smart funny and truthful. Hard commodities to find
Thanks Tyler, and all ZH'ers. If I could put into one sentence what I've learned this year.... Tyler's post said it all
the most corrupt entity in the market is now the regulator itself.
Happy New Year All, stay safe,.. stay prepared
