Apple Announces First Weekend iPhone 5 Sales Of 5 Million, Half Off Highest Estimate

Tyler Durden's picture

There was much riding on the Apple update for the first weekend sales from the new iPhone 5 and here they are.

  • APPLE SAYS IPHONE 5 FIRST WEEKEND SALES TOP 5M.

This number would be great if only it wasn't 50% off the highest whisper estimate of up to 10 million sales in the weekend. It is also the reason why the stock is now sliding down well over 2%, threatening to light the AAPL hedge fund hotel on fire.

apple "invented" smartphones like columbus "discovered" America with "Indians".

the chipset, LCD panel, etc....all created by Asian R&D centers

apple just puts shit together in a nice box and had steve jobs douche bag tell fanboys that they are gods.

pretty soon, when the Asians do their own global marketing and sales (not that hard compared to R&D engineering)....then Apple will proably just run over to government for bailout or sales just like most of Fortune 500.

even fucking drone tech was hacked by shithole Iran. Country lagging in technology soon becomes just another museum tourist destination for richer citizens.

value chain:

Raw commodity export --> cheap labor --> skilled manufacturing --> R&D OEM --> Global marketing and sales channel --> Global brand --> Tourist Destination --> Raw commodity export

I saw an iPhone 5 commercial last night and thought ruh-roh. It was showing me the mechanics of my thumb and my thumb's ability to traverse a space slightly larger than the space previously represented by the screen size of the iPhone 4. It almost seemed like parody, but it wasn't. It was a white flag. The Fonz is in midair and happy days are/is behind us.

yes, a toymaker with this kind of "valuation".  I'll only add that you are also talking about a public with increasing less purchasing power as the entire world is now playing a fiat game.  No currency is backed by gold, hence, everyone wouldbe wise to turn all paper promises into something of physical value.  Remind me, what's value of the ithingy when the power, internet, and cellular network all go down again?

My $20 phone works just fine. All the dick managers at work sit in meetings perusing there phones and I am the only one paying any attention at all.

Have fun with those phone bills, boys and girls, when they switch you over to the limited data plan without telling you.

I suppose they will wait for the iphone 10 first. Then you can have 9 devices sitting in your draw and thinking " I could have traveled round the world for the price of these worthless paper weights."

I remember seeing the first computer I ever bought, an 8088 which cost me $3,500 in 1987?, sitting in a thrift store with a $75 price tag (ten years later). I almost died. $3,500 could have taken me around the world in 1986 and there would have been more to see since we hadn't waged war all over the world yet.

Have fun with your paperweights. When Junior ask why you can't afford College tell him Apple needed the money more than the College fund.

Idiots.

When I drop my phone in the hot tub after to many shots of whiskey ,which happens quite to often, I'm off to Target the next morning to get another $20 phone. Let's see how long Stacy cries when she can't check her FB page because someone stuck a gun in her face for her stupid phone.

Still do not think this is a good time to short Apple. My daughter works in one of the flag ship stores in Oregon and she advised they needed about 3,500 each day to satisfy demand with the count of people in that one store. Thursday night they shipped her 650 phones. Needless to say consumers were disappointed. Many stores ran out of the new Iphone. So I think part of it is available supply.

How many times have we written off Apple and within a couple of weeks, back up it goes. Not long or short, just giving all the facts. Many stores sold out due to limited supply. Lets give it a few days before we drive Apple to the lows of that superior stock with losses as far as the eye can see. AMZN>

10M? I heard 6-8M and as low as 3.5M. Anyone who was saying 10M was wildly extrapolating the first day sales of 2M since they were double the first day 4S sales of 1M. By all realistic estimates they're still crushing it. They sold 4M iphone 4S's over the first weekend during the last release. So this is an improvement from that number plus they're rolling out sales to another 22 countries at the end of the week. The pre-market slide is knee jerk, this release alone means next to nothing.

oh also, I guess it's only convenient to mention algos on ZH when they take down gold or the market's up? right? not on headline releases of the largest stock in the world? a 2% pre market loss is all attributed to a natural selloff from dissapointed shareholders, right? oh boy, I feel for the folks on ZH(aka, Fox news of the financial press) that don't fact check or read other sources.

Agree, not broke, but very happy with my 4S. And are all the 2 million pre orders in the hands of consumers? I think Apple does not count those as sold until they are signed for by the consumer. So lets chill for a bit on Apple.

Man is a rationalizing, not a rational, animal.  You make dumb-ass decisions with your gut, and only then engage your intellect to try to make up a story about how it was a good move.  Any trader should know this - have it tatooted on their chest.  It's how those of us who actually do "think different" take your money.

Of course, thinking different in herds is kinda oxymoronic, no?

ZH is being WAY TOO GENEROUS in the headline!

Preorders were 2mm up from 1mm for Iphone 4s. So using your 10mm high sale estimate, that projects 8mm weekend sales up from Iphone 4s 3mm sales on first 3 days. Actual Iphone 5 sales were 5mm, including the preorders, so 3mm/8mm (high estimates) is a 62.5 % shortfall to real buyers and Ebayers.

Mon, 09/24/2012 - 09:30 | 2823981 drivenZ

exactly, the estimates were based on a record breaking first day of 2M sales. The shortfall is in comparison to first day sales. Not pre-release expectations. completely different and cant be extrapolated out across multiple days. have you never done modeling before?

I'm the proud owner of an apple I3 or so, not sure to be honest. I inherrited it from my wife who took out a new contract to get the I4. Mine has a broken window, but, since I only use it to make and receive phone calls I'm not bothered to get the class fixed for the €30-€50 euro they charge for the surgery. The bonus for having a broken glass is that the calls don't work to well when it rains. This is an excellent excuse in Holland with lots of rain. It helps me to stay in control instead of handing over the control to a device. To be honest I've yet to run into an App that actually adds value, but with my broken window that is not fair to say, I cannot actually see the apps. My next phone will be the $20 type phone talked about before, I do not need it to have internet. My 12 ought hours a day on a PC are more than enough to enlighten me on day to day affairs of the world and work. When I close the door at the end of the day it is over as far as I'm concerned, I do not want to see another digital information source I just want to go home and enjoy my life with my family.

Apple may go north of $1k dollar per share and find the greatest products, I really hope they'll be that succesful. Personally I cannot be bothered with all these gadgets. These were the basic rules I was once taught their is a group of early adaptors that will jump on the next cool thing everytime. I'm convinced this group of people has a high rate of apple addicts. I'm also convinced a big group of more conservative consumers will simply use their brain's and never become real apple addicts. This does not mean they will never buy apple as a principle, but they will only buy a device which they think will offer best value. Apple has a war to win in this field, if it can win that battle, they will definitely go north of $1k. If they cannot this is about as far as they get.

Maybe a stupid question, but how many AAPL shares are in circulation? One billion?

Now, how many iPhones are there in circulation?

Basically people are waiting in contrived lines for a toaster of the modern age. It's a FINE device, in a sea of devices. Nothing that special anymore. One thing that hacs me off is iOS and all these apps you download are all communicating with their backends and diagnostics and testing. So SO MUCH DATA is being passed back anbd forth, eating your dataplan and you get nothing out of it. The chatter between apps and their mother ships is incredible-everything. I don't even want these things anymore, they have made my life HELL

Today's market has taken a bite out of AAPL, leaving a gap from 695 to 700, along with similar bites taken out of NDX, VTI, AMZN, SOX, NWX, RLX, HWI, XAX and others.  My downside leading indicator, DJTA, sitting on 10 month support, is only 1% away from breaking down.  Weak close or opening tomorrow will be popcorn time.
