America's Fattest Are Getting Fattest-er Faster

Tyler Durden's picture

In the ten years to 2010, the severely obese (Americans who are 100lbs or more overweight) increased about 70%. A new study from RAND Corporation (via ScienceDaily) found that "the proportion of people at the high end of the weight scale continues to increase faster than any other group of obese people, despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity."

Up from 3.9% to 6.6% (or more than 15 million people) of our population is now morbidly obese. The prevalence of severe obesity was about 50 percent higher among women than among men, and about twice as high among blacks when compared to Hispanics or whites. Increases in obesity were also fastest in the younger cohorts - under 40.

"The proportion of people at the high end of the weight scale continues to increase faster than any other group of obese people, despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity," said Roland Sturm, lead author of the report and a senior economist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. "But for the first time in the past 20 years there is evidence the trend is slowing."

The study suggests that clinically severe obesity, instead of being a rare pathological condition among genetically vulnerable individuals, is an integral part of the population's weight distribution. As the whole population becomes heavier, the extreme category -- the severely obese -- increases the fastest.

To be classified as severely obese, a person must have a body mass index (a ratio of weight to height) of 40 or higher -- roughly 100 pounds or more overweight for an average adult man. The typical severely obese man weighs 300 pounds at a height of 5 feet 10 inches tall, while the typical severely obese woman weighs 250 pounds at a height of 5 feet 4 inches.

People with a BMI of 25 to 29 are considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or more classifies a person as being obese. For a 5-foot-10 inch male, a BMI of 30 translates into being 35 pounds too heavy.

Or, for those confused:

On the bright side, as we noted here, the faster we get fatter, the sooner we die, and the lower the deficit (via entitlements) will be. Perhaps the way out of this fiscal mess is indeed to eat ourselves to an early death? Maybe all those looking to regulate what we eat and drink may actually be doing our economy more harm than good in the long-run.

I go back and forth, but I notice that after I am eating well for a while when I eat something heavy I feel like shit.

I am getting there slowly, but ribs, barbecue and such are just good comfort foods.

I am below my old hockey playing weight, so I dont have weight issues, but when I am eating well I can feel it.

The reason why fasting works for your health is that it allows your body to catabolize all the excess stored wastes.

Juicing follows the same path, light meals which are digested fast, lots of nutrients and time to allow your body to heal.

Most stop healthy eating due to feeling like total shit while their body rids itself of toxins.

It's all in my head. When I get pissed off or depressed about something I tend to give in on the healthy aspects and fall back into "who gives a shit" mode. But luckily Bernanke does another round of QE and metals go on a run and all is right in the world. If Ben ever stops QE I will look like the guy in the picture.

I allow myself one day a week to eat those "comfort foods" that I used to gorge on. That helps prevent any cravings and backsliding. I maintain a daily log of everything I eat and my daily calorie burn through exercise. When I know I'm going to eat something particularly unhealthy on said day I will usually bank a bunch if calories throughout the week.

I have been doing this for five years now and it's become such a part of my day that I hardly think twice about it.

Exact opposite here. To save money ahead of required dental work I reduced my diet from a complete set of ingredients (half of which were processed) down to macaroni and water. Lost almost 60 pounds in 2 months. When it comes down to having nothing to chew or nothing to chew with, I pick the former. The weight loss is a positive side effect.

Vitamins would help with metabolism, that's for sure, but they cost too much. Macaroni simply happened to be something I had a lot of.

Weight can be lost pretty much though any single ingredient diet. A combination of foods is needed for proper digestion. I quit metabolizing macaroni after about 2 weeks. The remaining 1.5 months food's been going straight through. Hopefully by the time my teeth a fixed I'll be able to restore the rest of the body to proper working condition.

That's what living within one's means implies. Saving the good old fashion way, by not spending. When food's my only typical expense, I have no other corners to cut.

The most noticable thing when I get off an airplane at a US airport on the return trip from Europe is the recognition that American's are fat as hell and still stuffing their faces at airport food courts.

I overnighted at an airport hotel and in the morning went down for coffee and some toast. As I sat there sipping coffee I watched a waitress pass by my table over and over again with plates heaping with breakfasts bigger than all the food I will eat in an entire day! Looking around I notice giant whales passing by to get a seat and order enough food for six European breakfasts on one plate. How in hell can people be so fat and still cram shit food down their throats at 7:00 AM before the day even gets started?

You are jealous that Americans have such a bounty of food we can eat heaping helpings many times a day?

The problems, as you describe it, is Europeans have to pay out the ass for food.

I watch enough foriegn tv and film to understand there are large amounts of fat people in every society.

Better than that there are three Somatypes

  • Ectomorphic: characterized by long and thin muscles/limbs and low fat storage; usually referred to as slim. Ectomorphs are not predisposed to store fat or build muscle.
  • Mesomorphic: characterized by medium bones, solid torso, low fat levels, wide shoulders with a narrow waist; usually referred to as muscular. Mesomorphs are predisposed to build muscle but not store fat.
  • Endomorphic: characterized by increased fat storage, a wide waist and a large bone structure, usually referred to as fat. Endomorphs are predisposed to storing fat.

The body of the extreme endomorph is round and soft. The physique presents the illusion that much of the mass has been concentrated in the abdominal area. This may or may not be true. The arms and legs of the extreme endomorph are short in length and taper. This may give the appearance of stockiness. The hands and feet of the endomorph are comparatively small, and the upper arms and thighs are often more developed than the lower parts of the arms or legs. The body has a high waist.[2]

So science says there are fat people everywhere but you seem to be ignoring them.

This kind of fatness disparity shows just how broken the system is.

The USA has almost certainly the widest fatness inequality gap in the developed world.  Drilling down below the waistband shows that the ass fat and belly fat gaps are even wider top to bottom.

This disgrace can only be ameliorated so much by food stamps and free lunches.   Leveling the table for all can't be just about taxing the fatter-est people of this country.  We can't let the radical Right dictate who gets to be fat and who doesn't. If we let that happen they'll want to prevent the rollout of president Obama's new tongue-opperable, smart phone voting app which would simply crush democracy as we know it.

But at the same time, real, grass roots and community based efforts need to be put in place to get the under-overfed up closer to national averages.

Recently, NGO and public/private partnership charities such as Cocktails Across America and Booze Without Borders have stepped away from the bar to help erase this national shame.  You can too. Because it's not just about drinking or even eating and drinking, it's about eating and drinking and voting - all (or at least most of them) the right way.

At the end of the day...especially at the end of the day- skinny people are angry people and angry people riot, cause trouble and retard the smooth functioning of central planning.

But you can’t riot in a Rascal!

nmewn this is a clip from a post from testosterone pit. I am too lazy to look for the full link but it should not be to hard to find. Worth checking out.

Many companies offer options, where the employee portion for family coverage may drop from, say, $1,200 per month for a classic plan to $600 per month for a high-deductible plan with a maximum out of pocket of $4,000. People do the math. They’d save $600 per month, or $7,200 per year. Any expenses would be capped at $4,000. Savings: $3,200. Plus any out-of-pocket expenses they would have to pay under the traditional plan. These plans qualify for Health Savings Accounts—and contributions to them are deductible from federal income taxes (but not from California income taxes!!!). For healthy people, a high-deductible plan with an HSA account is financial nirvana. For people with chronic illnesses that are expensive to treat, such a plan may be less advantageous, but may still be a good deal (check your numbers carefully!). It’s a tough plan for those who don’t have the discipline to put aside the monthly savings so that they can pay their big deductible down the road. But it’s a fiasco for those who can barely pay their premiums and have nothing left to put aside—a growing part of the population [read.... The Pauperization of America].

Ah, ah, good theorizing for a US of A 'american' citizenism citizen. However, the concrusion is disproven by the brobbing up reproductive rate of Chinese citizenism citizens. Don't kids today chuck snowballs at cars anymore?  We used to get great exercise in the winter time running for our lives.

That brings back fond memories. I remember two perfect spots for such activities. One was a boulevard where it began a slow curved descent just past some woods. There was about a five foot bank next to the road which provided camoflage, especially at night. The nearest place for a car to pull over or turn around was about 300 yards away, so we rarely had to run from anyone.

The other place was a shoe repair shop on a fairly busy street. It had a flat roof that was easy to climb onto since the parking lot in back was higher than street level. It was great fun after school, because the cars were sitting ducks and the drivers would always limit their visual scans for perpetrators to ground level.

One day a friend and I, both 5th graders, were walking to school.  I chucked a snowball behind my back, trying to be cool, and hit the town's nicest Corvette smack dab in the driver's side windshield.  Couldn't have placed it any better.  Vette stops, of course, but two 5th graders can get to school pretty fast under that scenario.  We were scared to death but laughed most of the way.

I know this is a difficult concept to fully grasp, but you need to get to where you can wrap your mind around the idea of starving people who happen to be obese, before you can understand the complexity of the problem we are dealing with here. I first started getting clued in when I saw one of those news stories about a massively morbidly obese person (over 1000 pounds) who was extracted from their home and taken to the hospital. One of the first things they ended up treating this person for was malnutrition!

America is the home of people who consume thousands and thousands of empty calories daily, while managing to ingest only a small fraction of the actual nutrients their body needs. The resulting malnutrition creates cravings, the cravings drive overeating, and the end result is a lot of very fat, very unhealthy and unhappy people. The solution is better nutrition.

So when you think of "starving people" in the world, consider the possibility that there are two very different kinds of starving people. One group who is both nutrition and calorie deficient, and the other group who has a surplus of calories, but still lack essential nutrition. Both groups are far from anything resembling a healthy, happy ideal of the human condition.

Bottomline is we should be taxing all fast food at least .25c per item and use it as a subsidy for health insurance reform.  The reason health care costs are so high is because we are inundated with terrible fast food products and the ease at which they enter into our lives.  Fast food chains would be the first culprits on my high fat tax list.  Dollar menu would now be $1.25 menu

A suggestion for those on this thread who are interested in techniques for eating in more healthy ways. It's called partitioning. Eat the protein part of the meal first. Don't drink anything - let your stomach acids do their thing in breaking down the protein so that the enzymes in the upper gut can digest it. Then wait 30 minutes and eat the rest of your meal - the veggies, carbs, etc. Try it - you will very likely be amazed at how much better you feel.

Unfortunately this means protein only for the first part of your meal - no burger with buns and fries, at least not at the same time. And for those of you who suspect that wheat may be a problem for you - it probably is. And so are most other grains. If you can stand it, go a month without any wheat or grains in your diet. Then go have a burger with a bun and fries and notice how sick you feel. Then make your choices.

It's not as hard as you might think. A few days staying away from white food (sugars, processed foods, etc.) and you do feel different, less addicted to "food". Then when you do eat a starchy, sugary concoction you do feel sick, it's all quite obvious and yes you can try that at home if you actually have any healthy food available (doubtful).

I was wondering I haven't heard if Steve Wozniak exploded yet. And poor Sam Kennison he must of went out like a tomato into brick wall when he crashed. Everytime one of those fat fuckers get close to me their health risks increase. My sister started complaining about having to get out of her chair once she was sitting down I'd tell her, "why don't you roll over and close the door." As Rodney Dangerfield would say, "she was so fat her bathtub had stretch marks. Ya a policeman saw her on a corner and told her to break it up." Her high heals used to get stuck in the concrete. He saw her on a TV show one day. When she sat down his bookshelf shook.
