Debate Post-Mortem: Fast-Talking Romney For 'The People' As Obama Asks Gingerly If 'Got Medicare?'

Tyler Durden's picture

As Mr. Lehrer stumbled through the evening and the incumbent's odds of a repeat fell as fast as his frustration appeared to rise, a few things became very clear. President Obama spoke for over four minutes longer than Governor Romney in this evening's slug-fest. However, the fast-talking Mitt managed to squeeze in over 8300 words as opposed to Barack's 7400 words. The word-clouds below suggest each of the candidates' focus tonight with Obama appearing focused on his opponent 'Governor Romney' with heavy use of the words 'Got' and 'Medicare'; while word-wrangler Romney focused on 'People', 'Get', 'Going', 'Government', and 'Plan' (and no 'zinger'). If you are still standing after the drinking games, here are the details...

The market is voting after-hours - as Intrade's Obama Odds are dead-cat-bouncing lower on decent volume... (though obviously still a 66.5 to 33.5 leader)

According to CNN:

We calculate that to be:

  • Obama managed a brisk 172 words per minute in his 42:50, while
  • Romney managed a speed-freak-ish 217 words per minute in his 38:32

and the entire debate was over 16,000 words (including Mr. Lehrer's interruptions...)

with Mr. Romney's focus... People, Get, Going, Government, Plan

and President Obama's focus... Governor Romney, Got, Going, Medicare, Insurance; and 'Make, People, Think'

So, Romney 'outperformed' Obama by 26.2% in fast-talking?

Please note - (we have not pro forma-ed these numbers for lack of teleprompter)

...and, by way of non-fiction flashback, on this day a mere 70 years ago, the President was raising taxes, fixing wages and prices, and in the middle of a war...

"IF this superficial crap is what Americans base their voting decision on, God help us all. "

This sounds just like the drivel that came from the resident Obama cheerleader on my FB page. Last night he posted something profound like, "Romney did well if you like all lies."  While I am not a Romney fan, to characterize his performance as "superficial crap" and then ignore the fact that, excluding this debate, when Obama speaks publicly, he reads canned statements from a teleprompter, is hypocritical.  Obama's performance was poor, but if Ron Paul had been there as a third party candidate, they both would have been decimated.

I didn't realize we only have one class in America.  Middle class this, middle class that.  Let's all hold hands, wear the same clothes, and work in factories together! Socialism!

I just wish one of them would have the courage to answer a question with "the U.S. is fooked...does anyone realize how f-ing large a number $16,000,000,000,000 is?  Try counting out loud to a trillion...get back to me in 230,000 years when you finish."

What a depressing election...forced to make a binary choice between two candidates who don't deserve to run a Nevada Bunny Ranch much less the theoretical "essential nation."  Maybe voting Gary Johnson or write in R. Paul may at least make a statement.  Still, no one gives Perot any street cred for his 20% in '92.

One thing that bothers me about critiques of Robot is the whole "details" about what he would do.  Where were those calls for detailed mathematical equations when "Hope and Change" was the battle-cry?

Lastly, the anger on the President's face at being challenged is illuminating.  Robot will be lucky if DHS doesn't arrest him at the next debate for terroristic threats of the President.

Vote Gary Johnson... I was not impressed with Gary's narration on Google during debate but what Gary said was spot on.  I certainly wish he was part of the debate.

What great reality TV it was.   Hysterical really.   Barry got stomped like a narc at a biker rally.

From The Dictator came 7400 words of Marxist horseflop.  It was an exorbitant show of brainless ideology.  Confirms what we knew all along; the country is being run by a teleprompter.
