First Obama vs Romney Presidential Debate - Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

At 9pm Eastern, the first of many presidential debates will begin, whose ultimate goal will be to validate in the minds of those 47% or so (aka the very loud minority) who intend to vote for the next president, that they have made the right choice. They haven't (for the reason, or rather 16,171,037,343,409 reasons, see here: neither candidate can do anything at all to prevent the debt crisis iceberg that America is careening into full speed, and which nobody could have foreseen). But it sure makes for great theater, and even better drinking games. So fire up the Interwebs, prepare your Tungstenschläger IV drip, lean back in your favorite easy, bought on credit, and soon to be repossessed chair, and be distracted, unknowing that during the duration of the debate, the US raked up another $200-$300 million in public debt (depending on the frequency and duration of the commercial breaks).

All that intervention in markets is super duper, but Obamacare crosses the line? And only Obamacare on the national level, at the State level in MA it too is super duper. LOL, what a fucking cocksucker.

...then the dumb shit cites Lincoln and the transcontinental RR as instance of "we do some things better together," Derp du Derp, Lincoln was a RR lawyer, the transcontinental RR was a gigantic subsidy to his corporate pals, with mass slaughter of the Indians as a side dish, you fucking muppet.

EDIT: I might add, literally ALL the RR subsidized by the federal government went bankrupt within a few years. The only RR that did not go bankrupt was the Great Northern, built by James J. Hill, which was the only RR built WITHOUT federal subsidies.

EDIT2: An interesting tidbit...guess who owned the land which became the Eastern terminus of the transcontinental RR, and made a fortue selling it to the RR? That's right, Abraham Fucking Lincoln.

I am projecting into the future. 20 years. Interest on my loan is $6/day. While I make above average salary I don't make enough to pay the $6/day in interest, pay down the principle and save money for retirement. MY HOME VALUE WAS IN FREE FALL FOR 4 YEARS. I am 48, have 62k in student loans and all those engineers that were supposed to retire didn't because of the tech bubble and Lehman and I am working with 70 year old bosses who won't/can't afford to retire. They told me I would be filling the jobs the geezers aren't retiring from!

Romney says regulation is a requisite for capitalism to function. It's sad that the mainstream GOP agrees with that.

This has to be one of the principal problems right now, what with OWS and everything: Everybody is mad at what they perceive as 'capitalism,' when really it is corporatism that defines the current setup, and it has stifled real value-adding enterprise and stolen wealth from the middle class, all while obliterating liberty. It's this pavlovian response to stop gap problems with things like Dodd-Frank, instead of seeing that it was regulation and the TBTF status that caused/allowed  these problems to happen in the first place. These guys will just keep coming up with more exotic derivatives ad infinitum because they extort money from govt, saying it will be doomsday if they don't get TARP'd. Heads they win, tails taxpayers lose (and they win).

This summer when I was doing yard work for a guy, politics/business was brought up, including a discussion of the financial crisis and all that. He is a corporate lawyer and a smart guy who seemed to be a solid man who understood things. But when he brought up how those speculators/big banks need to be reigned in, I said something like, ' You know, some people (myself included) think the problem that capitalism has not been given a chance. Capitalism calls for bankruptcy and liquidation of malinvestment, and tough lessons come about for what were unprofitable ideas. Sure, it's painful, but the market needs that feedback.' A lot of people I know seem to say 'the banks need to be broken up.' And in return I just say, well make them stand on their own feet, i.e., no FDIC, no TBTF, no special treatment at all. Instantly they'd crumble. And I never say there would be no pain, becaues the current standard of living is propped up by borrowing from the future.

Even glass-steagall is superfluous because in a true free market, people are not incentivized to abdicate personal responsibility to things like the FDIC, and instead trustworthiness and reputations come to the forefront as priorities to depositors. The banks that gamble with money get graded as risky by ratings agencies that would proliferate, and they lose business. Boycotts and natural market mechanisms would leave those bad companies with no customers.

Sadly most people never actually bother thinking about what capitalism actually calls for, if it were allowed to play out with totally voluntary, un-coerced action. Regulation becomes intuitive under the guises of 'security' and such, even though they fail. And obviously there is the revolving door between the regulated and regulators.

People think it is more 'civilized' to have a welfare state and the political correctness and all that, and what were the most prosperous times economically as far as blazing growth and better morals/work ethic, the 19th and early 20th century, are viewed as barbaric. I'm not one-size-fits-all romanticizing the past, by the way, as though everything was virtuous. There were bad things to be sure and mankind is evil and born of a sinful nature. Just making that clear. I know the non-politically correct story behind how many of the Founders were actually in occults and masonic. I investigate this stuff for myself. I just believe it wasn't merely coincidental that in the beginning years of this American experiment there was that much prosperity and explosive growth with a strong dollar and high wages (and measured in gold, too) and exporting more than any other country in the world.

I think people like thinking of themselves as victims and that they are owed something. They become antagonistic towards laissez-faire, which calls for everything being earned. They thusly try to marginalize libertarians and intimidate people by saying it would be dog-eat-dog and with no compassion. This leads to things like we saw at the DNC where many of them openly said corporate profits should be banned. Never mind that charity actually was a major part of those times in the industrial revolutions this country had, and it was more wholesome as far as Christianity being integral to it, with the dignity of earning one's keep, instead of just anonymously taking a handout. Right now society celebrates perversion and consumerism, with things like low interest rates being agreed to by most, and then the Obama commercials encouraging people to get on food stamps and take what is theirs.  The bread of welfare back then was bitter such that one would not become a dependent leech, and also there were private sector means to lift people up. In the laissez-faire years, people would come together voluntarily and advocate and practice temperance movements. That was a big thing for me in realizing I am a libertarian/classical liberal/what conservative used to mean. I am super anti alcohol and harmful drugs across the board. But I need to be on the frontlines persuading people not to use these things, and have them see why with things like highway slaughters and destroyed families owing to alcohol, such that they quit of their own accord, because just legislating morality does not work. Leaving it to the law backfires many times, actually, because people become lazy as far as railing against alcohol and other debauchery. They think putting things into law gets the job done and that's that. Never mind that supply of marijuana  has not gone down a bit, and that all the 'war' on it has done is make the black market more lucrative in it, and that it created so many victimless-crime prisoners.

Got off topic there, but just kind of explaining how I saw libertarianism fit right in with my conscience as a very conservative Christian. I am called to evangelize so that people may be saved by believing in the Lord and His precious blood that cleanseth all unrighteousness. Spiritual warfare is the Christian weaponry. Don't let something like Catholicism and its manmade doctrines of conquest and conversion by the sword and catechisms/unbiblical beliefs like purgatory, which holds that Christ's atonement for sin was insufficient, distort the truth about Christianity.

Jesus Christ died for us on the cross, and only those who believe in Him are saved to be reunited with their Father in Heaven. Only faith in Christ can save a person.
