US Foodstamp Usage Rises To New Record High

Tyler Durden's picture

While the 0.4% perfectly unmanipulated and totally coincidental swing in the unemployment rate in an Obama favorable direction one month before the election came at a prime time moment for the market, one hour ahead of the open, setting the market mood for the rest of the day (which despite all best efforts still closed red, valiant efforts by Simon Potter and the FRBNY's direct pipe to Citadel notwithstanding), there was one other, far more important data point released by the government's department of agriculture, sufficiently late after the market close to impact no risk assets. That data point of course was foodstamps (or the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP), and we are confident that no readers will be surprised to learn that foodstamp usage for both persons and households, has jumped to a new all time record.

At 46,681,833 persons hooked on SNAP, the July number crossed the previous record posted a short month before, as the foodstamp curve continues 'plumbing' newer and greater heights each month.

More disturbing is that in the same month, the number of US households reliant on foodstamps rose by a whopping 99,493 to 22,541,744. Assuming a modest 2 persons per household, the increase means that more people went on Foodstamps in the month of July than found jobs (181,000 according to the latest revised NFP data). Furthermore, it appears that buying votes has become a tad more expensive in the past month. After the benefit per household dipped to a record low in April at just $275.81, this has since retraced some of its losses and is now at an inflationary $277.92. Oh well: inflation.

Adding the number of disability recipients in the month of July, which in that month rose by 20,474, and one can see why the government is quite happy with dumping this particular release long after everyone was on their way back home for the weekend.

Finally, and putting it all into perspective, since December 2007, or the start of the Great Depression ver 2.0, the number of jobs lost is 4.5 million, while those added to foodstamps and disability rolls, has increased by a unprecedented 21 million. Oh and about $7 or $8 trillion in debt. Who's counting really.

And this is the real and only key economic statistic of today that nobody wants to talk about, because it is equally the fault of both parties.

Total foodstamp recipient persons:

Total foodstamp recipient households and benefits per household.

Putting it all into perspective: Jobs versus Foodstamps/Disability:

Very provactive of Mittens to start a thought experiment that at least half of Jim Lehrer's paycheck is signed by the ChiComms.  Too bad Mittens then pussied out and said "I'm sorry" and "I like you."  If you're gonna be a badass, be a badass and don't diminish manly statements with the I'm sorry bullshit.

Nah, this is a nothing statistic ... everyone knows that the people on food stamps need food stamps and will die without food stamps, so only cold-hearted types like Romney would suggest that more people on food stamps is a problem.

As for the Obamaphone, I would be surprised if it didn't turn out to be a very effective "get out the vote" tool on election day.

Actually its an unwitting conspiracy of the poor and a knowing conspiracy of the ver rich against the middle and moderately rich.

You know, this whole experiment with increasing liberty and property rights kicked off with the black plague of the middle ages, and is only roughly 900 years old, so actually it is an anomoly in a longer history of tyranny, oppression, serfdom and slavery for the masses.  We should stop resisting it and go back to our plows and be grateful for what our overlords allow us to keep.

Mittens will play the food stamp game just as well, if not better. Power and control. Throw the plebes some bread and circuses while you and your buddies loot the treasury, debase the currency, sell off the entire fucking country, and create a war to cover it all up with. Worked for the Romans. For a while. Mittens and Obammie - the two tone minstrel song and dance act, pleasing TPTB for the forseeable future. Next step, free Fema camps, with big ovens, and lots of soap and green crackers ! Coming soon to a neighborhood near you ! Romeny will just be a bit more blatant in feeding his friends at the trough... Pentagon will get billions thrown at it- whether needed or not (after all it goes to the CONTRACTORS, not the troops).  I'll be surprised if he's elected because he'll galvanize the masses - you'll have real rioting in the streets insteead of lame OWS demonstrations.

BOTH parties play the same game - but Obama has just been a bit better at keeping the masses diverted and pacified... all that 'Hope and Change' - keep your eyes over here while they're looting over there...   all the 'socialist' BS is to make the masses feel like Obama is on 'their' side even though trillions have gone to he banks and Wall Street - same people in charge of financial affairs, serving the banks, same people running the wars..... NOBODY prosecuted for financial or war crimes   THAT won't happen under either party but both parties will; make sure there's no viable third choice or any fundamental change to the current $$$ buys influence system.

Trillions will go to the big boys until the Treasury is empty (or rather until the pyramid scheme falls apart) while bread and circuses will continue to keep the masses from rioting. Expect another war to keep atttention focused elsewhere, away from the economic implosion.  We're looking at a rerun of Rome's decline - alternating buffoons and aspiring tyrants in charge with horses in the Senate, while the edges of the Empire crumble - the barbarians aren't so afraid anymore and feel like Rome is more a parasite than civilizer.

Mitt Romney Adopts New ‘Ronnie Ferocious’ Persona For Debates

DENVER—Saying that he wasn’t going to take any shit tonight and that the debate podiums “looked just as fucking lame as all the dressed-up suits in this godforsaken hellhole of a room,” Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared tonight at the University of Denver’s Magness Arena as Ronnie Ferocious, the aggressive, no-rules punk-rock persona he has reportedly adopted for his three debates against President Barack Obama.

Wearing a sleeveless cutoff suit jacket, tight leather pants, and a blue tie knotted around his head of spiky, red-white-and-blue-streaked hair, Romney swaggered on stage, took his position beside Obama, and ordered debate moderator Jim Lehrer to “fucking do this already.”

“You know what? I’ll ask the first question,” the former Massachusetts governor said before putting out his cigarette on his forearm and flicking the butt at Lehrer. “What kind of little shit show do we have here this evening, folks? That’s my question. Because from where I’m standing, seems like a big ol’ shit show. And Lehrer, shut your fat mouth when Ronnie Ferocious is talking, or I’ll pound your goddamn face in.”

“As for you, Mr. President, you can wipe that smug grin off your face or I can do it for you,” he added before sticking out his diamond-pierced tongue and wagging it at everyone in the auditorium. “I don’t need any of that ‘Forward’ shit from you tonight.”

After he signaled sound technicians to cut the Dead Kennedys' track blasting from the speakers and kissed his large bald eagle tattoo, Romney proceeded to offer his opening remarks on domestic policy, a low 45-second moan that turned into a high-pitched howl, which political analysts speculate may have been about health care, discretionary spending and entitlements, gay marriage, the Dream Act, or some kind of food or taxes.

( Oh for fucks sake who downvotes the Onion?)

The ironies are these: We the People collectively have the sovereign power, to tax, and to punish those who do not pay. That power is what makes money BE money. The effective privatization of that power, given away to privately owned banks, is the PRIMARY social fact! Therefore, the USA is theoretically a democratic republic, but is actually a fascist PLUTOCRACY.

The theoretical We the People powers are ACTUALLY controlled by a tiny minority, whose use of those powers depends upon fooling enough of the people, enough of the time, so that their puppet politicians can ACTUALLY run the PLUTOCRACY, behind the fake, and deteriorating, democratic republic bullshit. Superficial analysis of "democracy" that fails to understand that the social reality is ACTUALLY PLUTOCRACY, are over-simplistic and misleading!

What we should do, theoretically speaking, is make the democratic republic work, by the people taking back control over their money system. However, since the overwhelming vast majority of them have been brainwashed to believe in bullshit for their whole lives, that seems practically impossible to do. But nevertheless, the abstract theory should be this:

The basis of the entire economy is the power to rob. There is no private property outside of some system of public violence. Money does not mean much unless it is backed by murder. In theory, We the People are supposed to direct the use of that power (not give it away to tiny elites, operating through corporations). The whole of the economic process should be regulating and civilizing the systems of social robbery, in an attempt to bring those into a better dynamic equilibrium. This is especially imperative given the runaway progress of science and technology. The majority of Americans will NEVER be able to again compete with third world peasants, or machines, for jobs. Especially those computer controlled machines are going to eat all the jobs!

My point is that this food stamp situation is NEVER going to get any better. The vast majority of Americans will NEVER be able to compete with third world peasants, and, more and more, there will be no human beings whatsoever that will be able to compete with the advancing computer controlled machines. In point of fact, human beings will become "pets," whether they like it or not, and only through the more effective use of the people's soevereign power could they humanize that.

The problem today is that the global elites are controlling the American economy, for the benefit of those elites. They are deliberately destroying the democratic republic, that WAS the old USA, and are replacing it with science fiction nightmare scenarios. The fundamentals of those science fiction nightmares can NOT be stopped. We MIGHT be able to understand that, and go with it, to push it past where it otherwise would have stopped, to transform it into something more bearable?

Food stamp dependency is due to the fundamental fact that the entire economic system is predicated upon the power to rob. That power has been privatized. It should be returned to We the People, but, in order for them to do that, they would have to take back responsibility for the real death controls, and do what is necessary in better ways. Of course, I am not holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

Rather, the runaway insanity of privatized money/murder systems, controlled by an elite, is ultimately a self-destructive insanity. The most wealthy are inside the most protected environments, and therefore, still able to believe in the oldest religions, etc.. They will tend to be the last to feel the impact of their decisions, although they still ultimately will ... However, in the mean time, the privatization of the power to rob, working through the money system enabling the privatization of fiat money, legalized counterfeiting, or endless runaway frauds, benefiting the few insiders, while systematically screwing everyone else worse and worse, is working through its INSANITIES, which are primarily debt slavery, backed by wars based on deceits, which will run an ACTUAL death control system, that becomes genocidal wars abroad, with democidal martial law at home.

The ONLY genuine alternative solutions are to do the necessary death controls better, in order to sustain better debt controls. Like I said, (and as has been said by many others) human beings are going to be superseded by their technology. WE ARE GOING TO BECOME PETS.

At the present time, those who own the machines gain all the benefit from those technologies, while those who do not own the machines are being left behind in the dust. Those left behind in the dust in America can no longer compete with those left behind in the dust in less developed countries. Eventually, nobody who is human is going to be able to compete with the computer controlled machines. Right now, the POWER of the OWNERS is the only thing that allows them to control the machines for their benefit. That POWER is theoretically the power of We the People. However, that power has practically all been already given away. The powers of government have already be almost 99% privatized, as seen by the degree of privatization of the control over the money supplies, in the form of fiat money, generated by private banks, and the privately owned Federal Reserve Board.

All of that success at privatization is due to the history of the triumphs of the methods of organized crime, actually being able to take control of the political processes, and therefore, generate the laws which benefit the tiny elites at the center of that system of organized crime. My point is that privatized organized crime IS and WAS always the reality of all governments, which should be directed by We the People. That is the context in which we should smash through the popular notions about what "food stamps" are, and symbolically represent, which are ALL BACKWARDS.

Therefore, I believe that this comment by DCFusor was BACKWARDS. I think we need to break on THROUGH that looking glass, and stop seeing everything backwards, in that Bizarro Mirror World Fun House! Therefore, what we should do is reverse the idea of food stamps as being the exception for the few poor, to being the universal right of everyone, EXCEPT that there must be a new use of sovereignty to limit population, through a radically different death control. One sixth of the American population are already effectively "pets with rights," while about one half are already partially dependent upon receiving money from the government ... In that context, I point out that everything that we call "birth control" today is actually "death control," but, like everything else, inside of our Bizarro Mirror World culture, we always talk about that BACKWARDS. We need to think very differently about all these kinds of problems! Not go BACKWARDS, to think about them like any old-fashioned religions or ideologies ever did!

Tax it, and require permits and licenses and inspections and certificates for grow operations to operate "legally", creating artificial scarcity and state-backed cartels (a la Big Tobacco) leading to less choice and higher prices. How else would they make up the revenue shortfall that would ensue if the War on Drugs was scaled back or ended?

Hmm I think I've seen this before somewhere...

Precisely...all the "lefty" potheads out there (I used to be one, not lefty but old school pothead) should understand that "legalization" is not the nirvana you think it would be.

Legalization just means regulation in a different form...instead of paying with your time in jail or attorney fees & fines you will still pay for regulation as the end consumer through the bureaucracy...it has always been thus.

And I can assure you, the pot will not be any better, just increasingly expensive over time.

The side benefit of either is, murder & mayhem is taken out of the equation...until they say you can't grow it in your own backyard because of the taxes lost to government...then the appeals to "stoner patriotism"...then rinse & repeat fines, penalties, jail & bloodshed ;-)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellified_man

Mellified man, or human mummy confection, was a legendary medicinal substance created by steeping a human cadaver in honey. The concoction is mentioned only in Chinese sources, most significantly the Bencao Gangmu of the 16th-century Chinese pharmacologist Li Shizhen. Relying on a second-hand account, Li reports a story that some elderly men in Arabia, nearing the end of their lives, would submit themselves to a process of mummification in honey to create a healing confection.[1] This process differed from a simple body donation because of the aspect of self-sacrifice; the mellification process would ideally start before death. The donor would stop eating any food other than honey, going as far as to bathe in the substance. Shortly, his feces (and even his sweat, according to legend) would consist of honey. When this diet finally proved fatal, the donor's body would be placed in a stone coffin filled with honey. After a century or so, the contents would have turned into a sort of confection reputedly capable of healing broken limbs and other ailments. This confection would then be carefully sold in street markets as a hard to find item with a hefty price.

Very much like the Fed monetary policy. If we feed the central bankers enough money, they will bathe in it, eat it, and eventually turn into perpetual self-sustaining money-shitting organisms, from which money can be harvested at will. The ultimate goal is a monetary ecosystem that grows and feeds on itself. When the organisms die, they can be pureed, rolled into little balls, dipped in powdered sugar, and be carefully sold on the street as ben bens, kind of like bon bons, but much more.....disgusting. "The incredible, edible Fed."

I have an expired one from a few years back--I keep it for street cred.

Short and simple answer: NO.  I was on foodstamps only, and I couldn't use it for anything other than "basic" foods.  No beer, no toilet paper, no plastic baggies, no pet food, etc.  It paid for anything in the market or deli that was on a SHELF and wasn't in the "non-food" category.

There are several different programs which use the EBT cards, though, and there are other qualifications.  If you're "legally" homeless you can use your SNAP for fast food and pizza and stuff like that.  In NYC, if you're legally homeless you get a plastic ID card you can use for entry into the various shelters.  You have to do paperwork for that, though, and if you're a white guy, you get a lot of hints that it's a waste of your time.

I was effectively homeless and didn't bother with all that, myself--I moved in with a mentally-ill guy in a shithole 1-bedroom.  He took the $300 month I gave him for rent and spent it on crack.  He used to get arrested on a regular basis for gypsy-cab work.  They'd give him IV meds for a few days and he'd be OK, then they'd kick him back out of the hospital and he'd go back to ruining my night's sleep.

Good times.
