US Foodstamp Usage Rises To New Record High

Tyler Durden's picture

While the 0.4% perfectly unmanipulated and totally coincidental swing in the unemployment rate in an Obama favorable direction one month before the election came at a prime time moment for the market, one hour ahead of the open, setting the market mood for the rest of the day (which despite all best efforts still closed red, valiant efforts by Simon Potter and the FRBNY's direct pipe to Citadel notwithstanding), there was one other, far more important data point released by the government's department of agriculture, sufficiently late after the market close to impact no risk assets. That data point of course was foodstamps (or the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka SNAP), and we are confident that no readers will be surprised to learn that foodstamp usage for both persons and households, has jumped to a new all time record.

At 46,681,833 persons hooked on SNAP, the July number crossed the previous record posted a short month before, as the foodstamp curve continues 'plumbing' newer and greater heights each month.

More disturbing is that in the same month, the number of US households reliant on foodstamps rose by a whopping 99,493 to 22,541,744. Assuming a modest 2 persons per household, the increase means that more people went on Foodstamps in the month of July than found jobs (181,000 according to the latest revised NFP data). Furthermore, it appears that buying votes has become a tad more expensive in the past month. After the benefit per household dipped to a record low in April at just $275.81, this has since retraced some of its losses and is now at an inflationary $277.92. Oh well: inflation.

Adding the number of disability recipients in the month of July, which in that month rose by 20,474, and one can see why the government is quite happy with dumping this particular release long after everyone was on their way back home for the weekend.

Finally, and putting it all into perspective, since December 2007, or the start of the Great Depression ver 2.0, the number of jobs lost is 4.5 million, while those added to foodstamps and disability rolls, has increased by a unprecedented 21 million. Oh and about $7 or $8 trillion in debt. Who's counting really.

And this is the real and only key economic statistic of today that nobody wants to talk about, because it is equally the fault of both parties.

Total foodstamp recipient persons:

Total foodstamp recipient households and benefits per household.

Putting it all into perspective: Jobs versus Foodstamps/Disability:

So if you were to extrapolate with the unemployment number (7.8%) back to 44 month low you would expect food stamps to be back to that low in January 2009. The number on food stamps should be closer to 32.5 million on food stamps.

Huh. Now you no why people don't trust the unemployment number. Oh sure we know these jobs produced are lower paying jobs from various other sources. Primarily the tax revenues. These are low wage and part time jobs that people unfortunately have no choice but to take. Thanks again O. Who in there right mind can endure four more years of this guy. Forward is such a joke.

One of the more insidious stealthy things this administration has done is to redfine benefit eligibilty levels for food stamps and many other forms of assistance.  So for example the qualifying poverty level was increased quite a lot, the definition of "hunger" was changed to be "food anxiety" (ie no reference to actual nutrtional/caloric deficits) etc etc.  So that in a time where economic hardship would already increased them, they wildly outpaced what ordinarily would have taken place, as these numbers show.  These changes are buried in geek speak papers and gov studies but you can dig them up if you look.  I did several years ago when these articles came out mid 09 time frame about sudden increase in hunger & poverty in america and why something "must be done".  Well something was done and it was to redefine qualification levels and basic terms, so that massive amounts of additional stimulus (vote bribes?) could be handed out under the guise of compassion in hard times.

All in the spirit of locking in more Democrat voters.  Its working.  Perhaps we should all just quit our jobs, stop paying taxes, and get on the dole.

It is closely related to the jobless numbers and workforce participation rates.  It has become relatively much more lucrtative to be on the dole, so why look for work?  This has gone on better part of 4 years, soon a whole generation will be lost to gov dependency.  It won't take much more of this for there to be a voting majority receiving assistance, and then it is game over.  Got electrolytes? (obscure Idiocracy reference)

Beware "Food Anxiety"! Remember stockpiling more than a few day's worth of anything now labels you as a "Potential Terrorist".

The quantities of "supplies" we have in the back of our garage would, by this strange "anti-self reliance" mindset, probably qualify us as a latter-day Al Quaeda cell.

Perhaps there's a pharmacotherapy that we can follow to relieve "food anxiety" - surprised the major players haven't jumped on this one yet . . . . . . .

That's pretty much bullshit.

There was really esoteric modification to how certain types of income were handled in the '08 farm bill, but it wasn't a major thing.  Qualification limits haven't been adjusted significantly on a Federal level.

They did start indexing the benefit to inflation, but you know the gummit, there's no inlation, anyway.

The reason so many people are eligible today is because wages keep falling in real terms.  Another few years and 50% of the population will qualify.

Has the debasement continues (globally) these EBT cards (who whatever Socialist Benefits programme your State jurisdiction favours) will buy less and less essentials.  They will print more for that reason so the cycle is self-fulfilling - because growth is not coming back to save the day this time.

It's still gotta a long time to run.  They are still faily subdued in Greece, Spain, etc, considering what's actually going down. Once one of the so-called modern democracies goes Balkan... lookout - no matter what Country you reside in as you could be next.

Since 2007 the Federal Government has been spending around $700B a year paying for the lifetime expenditures of the average American.

Oddly this is not being talked about in any constructive way, during the silly season know as election time.

The upper 10% get wealthier and everyone else suffers. And the Federal Reserve is monetizing the Federal Governments expenditures for those average American's.

Oddly didn't hear anything about that in the debate on Wednesday.

Would you really be expecting an Administration that seems ever more keen on limiting personal defensive capability to be in the business of encouraging ownership and use of a very effective covert killing device, with fully recyclable ordnance too??

Give the 47 million bows 'n' arrows (probably made in China anyhow - so they'll WILL work just fine - despite all the negative rhetoric on this forum, China does make some VERY good quality stuff - for reasonable prices too) and that'll certainly make the next Occupy movement event quite interesting . . . . . . .

Maybe this is part of the "Grand Plan" - encourage an armed insurrection, so the Militia have a "legitimate" excuse to use up all those 0.40 hollowpoint rounds the US Taxpayers have conveniently provided??

We were at the grocery store today and as the total rang up, my husband noted to me that in the lower right-hand corner of the main register's screen, the store software advised us (in like size 30 font) what purchases we made were "food stamp eligible".  I'd not noticed this before.  Geez, it could sort of work as a not-so-subliminal advertisement for those considering applying for assistance.  But, I understand that the "register" doesn't know who is going to be paying via assistance $'s and who isn't.  But, it is interesting that it's right there in everyone's face.

That's how it has progressed so far. And time has been their side for years. They used to have the luxury of having the change take a decade.

Small example...  Imagine in the 80's David R.  asked some think tank "How can we get the proles to feel more like proles and be happy about it?"   Well,  Mr. R.  we have a couple interesting things we can do.  How about this,   We are going to have to cut down the middle class's wages over the next decade as we export those tasks,   so, we start making them feel like they are in a different class than us.  Sort of a Dr. Seues "Stars On Thar's"  thing.  So we have an idea to have them demand it.  We will start it out as a benefit.  We will call it "Casual Friday's,  By the end of the decade no middle class person will be dressed in 2/3 piece suits, except for "Our Class"   They will start to see themselves as "Less Important"  then those higher up who  will be allowed to wear suits....  The conditioning is subtle.  They will never see the mind perception changing....  )

But those were the days when they had time.  BUT PHYSICAL limits (which were the only things they cannot not print/control/destroy/take over)  they have their timechart all bunched up.  Peak Oil, Ocean Fish,  Rare Earths... Whatever.  We are running out...

So they are moving faster.  Total surveillance, isn't totally in place, Digital money isn't quite there(no cash transactions).    etc.

So one is able to catch mistakes more often.  They are rushed, Time is not on their side any longer.   And more than anything,  More and more are blocking their ears to the siren's calls.   They are using the internet to read articles by outlets not in the "Company"...

They are awaking...

Or something like that...

Something to consider:

Most here probably were around during the dot.com bubble and the housing bubble.  Im sure you remember thinking to yourself: "This is unsustainable, there is no way this will go on like this forever."

And you were right.

We have a dependency bubble (I just made that up).  There is no way this amount of dependency is sustainable.  This bubble WILL pop.  When this bubble pops and those dependents dont have food to eat, they are going to come after you and your family and they are going to try to eat you.

The risk (and likelihood) is that "they" will not be content with paying you and yours just the one visit either . . . .

There are alreade plenty "out there" who have demonstrated a willingness to place their interests over those of a reasonable civilisation. Usually these individuals end up incarcerated, but once "society" collapses, then the inmates may well become future "outlaws" - with all those very useful skills they've gained whilst "inside".

Those who prefer to live off Society are not planning to change their preferences any time soon - and I suspect many would welcome the breakdown of order, since they would be able to operate an effective "divide and conquer" strategy over the remaining small enclaves of "civility".

Time will tell.

Work is not just about getting paid (though that's a definite plus point!!). Work is also about developing social skills, interacting with others (customers, workmates), and providing a degree of "meaning" to life. This is one of the many reasons why those who retire young often die young, whereas those who continue working (OK, through desire rather than need in many cases) tend to "last longer".

Of course the downside arises where those who choose to remain in employment in effect remove opportunity from those wishing to enter the workforce. It is very far from easy to establish yourself in your own business without at least some form of prior employment experience that lenders can assess, as part of their risk assessment in funding you.

The fact that many new successful start-ups in real businesses are reliant on family money and / or connections, would seem to support the above.

We could probably use the kids for kiddie porn.  Big bucks to be made in that.

Politics aside, some things do need to be said.

Remember...always, in America, these people are "the salt of the earth."  "Fallen on hard times."  "Turning their life around."  "Future millionaires"  "Nuclear physicists in the making."

And thereby you must pay, forever, for their subsidized housing and food.  And if you disagree with the arrangement, you are evil, a supremacist, a nazi.

If you save and pay for food, you are the bad guy.  If you pay your mortgage (or don't go into debt) you are the bad guy.  If you are healthy and fit and have a functioning, able mind that isn't clouded by psychotropic substances and medications, you are the bad guy.  If you are fiscally responsible, you are the bad guy.  If you are independent, you are the bad guy.

And not only must you pay for the bottom feeders, you labor must also go to the benefit of the TBTF banks and subsidized corporations that wouldn't exist if it weren't for this transfer.

Start to realize this, and you will realize the urgency of going Galt.  It's an existential, life or death struggle now.  We are not talking Disneyland or Hollywood or soap opera fantasy anymore.  We are not in Kansas anymore.

You just have to accept this and make some decisions accordingly.

For going Galt to succeed it must include getting rid of any cash visible to government and taking every handout you can get to hasten the collapse of the ponzi.

another hmmm...lets check these facts..immutable because they are real and people would starve otherwise.

there are 314,159,265 people 46,681,833 are on stamps = 15%

there were 111,400,000 occupied households in 2008 and 22,541,744 households are on stamps = 20%.

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/brief.html

the payment per household is 277.92 per month or 75.2 billion a year. or $134.2 per person per month.

using mickey d's as a proxy for cheap food, a big mac costs $3.57, so about 109 bucks a month forr one a day, and about 1 and a quarter big macs a day at 134.3 a month.

the other federal benefits per household go for rent, food, health, utilities and city taxes.

assuming that every household on stamps is underemployed and would otherwise not seek hand-outs, the unemployment rate is 15% for people and 20% of households. shove that in your U6.

oops...should have blended this in with bruces post here

http://brucekrasting.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/SSCBOasis.png

next..the number of owner occupied houses is 67.8% (same source) of the 111.4 or 75 millon households.

what is the food stamp poverty trap of the next cohort of households? how many of the 75 million are on food stamps and how many of these households are underwater on their mortgages or are above water, but have taken on too large a mortgage and, because banks and the government dont want a fair price for their houses (because the banks would be insolvent), are paying off too much debt to buy too little a house.

on the flip side..who knows how many houses were built with too many mod cons and too high a spec for a stagnant economy to ever afford? it raises a few more questions.

how much of the 75 billion in food stamp benefit is paid from those who are just above this food stamp poverty trap?

how much of the other benefits to cover utilities, clothing, rent are paid from those ust above the benefit poverty trap?

in other words...we are not only headed for debt servitude and poverty..we are already mired in it.

if the bottom 47% pay no taxes are they not unemployed? i suggest this is the cost of globalization of trade..the unemployment rate is not 8%, not is it 16%, it is somewhere between 20% and 47%.

this is the true price of the style of socialism favored by advocates of the fed. it is wefare democracy with a big sponsorship of banks. the shame is that even though freddie and fannie and the fha are modifying loans, they are only modifying interest rates on overly large loans from a still (by around double) inflated housing market. the banks are taking charges for loans on their books and passing these charges on to fully trapped mortgagees, yet nothing gets done.

remember margaret thatcher who said "the trouble with socialism is that you run out of other peoples money". the fed thinks printing debt can be reversed.

blame globalisation and wal-mart for this..and apple and all those american companies who put foreign taxes ahead of american taxes.

They may not earn enough to have to pay federal taxes after exemptions. Lots of folks pay federal taxes but then end up get most (or all of it) back in refunds, so I would not assume the bottom 47% paying no taxes are unemployed.

Don't knock Food Stamps -- as food prices rise faster and faster, it's the non-banker's only connection to the Fed's money press. For a few weeks the poor will eat while the middle class goes hungry, then everyone gets EBT cards, then the stores stop accepting them, and the riots begin.

Just a matter of time.  Some day soon cash will be confiscated and everyone will have an EBT card for ALL purchases.  The Dept of Agriculture will be so proud.  No more irritating cash that can't be traced or taxed.  Confiscation will be so much easier - just tell Jamie Dimon to hit a few keystrokes multiplying all balances by .5.  And when hyperinflation hits, no awkward stickers adding several zeros to the bills.  Jamie just adds a zero or two to all balances every week or so.  No problemo.  The Banksters will love it.  Get rid of all those expensive tellers, guards, armored trucks, and branch office real estate devoted to taking, protecting, storing, and distributing cash. Bank reduces operating expenses by 80%+ down to just a web site and some rented servers. Borrow from the Fed at .001%, charge 18% on credit cards, what is not to love??

The food won't keep showing up in Walmart and Target if their suppliers stop delivering it. Why would anyone sell a pound of flour for $100 if they could wait a few days and sell it for $200? There will be only barter until the currency stabilizes or an alternative is found.

EBT is not a different currency, just a different way of printing the same currency.

That's it. All supermarkets, grocery stores, cafeterias, vending machines, restaurants, fast food franchises and everywhere food items are sold must be required to first see a doctor's prescription before allowing anyone that is fat to buy any food--even top ramen. If you are fat fuck you. You wait outside until some one fills your prescription. You have no reason to be hanging around blocking up the isles of a supermarket or making me wait in my car at in-and-out drive through while you drool in front of me thinking about making yourself fatter. And those of you on EBT fuck you too. You can wait till Jamie Dimon's helicopter drops your containers in a field. Preservation of the current order is held above all else including survival over the long haul.

Eligibility criteria for SNAP needs to change so that more foks are driven to grow and preserve food.

Become more self sufficient, make us all more resiliant.

A huge chunk of the best farm land in the USA is in the suburbs and cities.

I believe we are going to drop a good billion plus folks off the planet in the next 10 years due to greed and stupitidy linked to an underoptomized information processing base and memory errors.

Machine algos dominating our trade systems provide a meth like high for a few so transitory, but rewarding to machines who are winning.

Many will answer with a cry to cut off all folks on SNAP immedietly. Let the poor sorry ass parasites starve all 22.5 million of them.

Let us  make the law so the hungry can legally be killed.

We will be within our rights then.

Show them parasites the right way to reality.

Maybe we could start a new C corp, how a bout 1 $ a name, get the addresses of all them SNAP folks.

Have the gov give us a $5 bounty on each one dead, lots of ROI on that. With a 20% tax and a 10% hit rate per month soon the national debt will be gone, we will be happy, no more hungry people left.

The final solution to all the problems in your life is to simply make sure people not in your liking or who are taking advantage of you and causing you so much pain are eliminated.

So I have presented a solution to the problem which requres you to invest your money to kill you neighbors who are poor and hungry.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

I would live to hear any alternatives to change the system and help people become free short of any political or religious conversion.

Suckers!

Urban squatting.

Take over abandoned property, hold it until the law gives you the right to own or you’re evicted.

Drop your expenses.

There is a ton of money to be made by changing the laws of title to leverage common English law on principles of possession.

We need better paper backed by a new reality.

Long term absentee landlords are welcome to reside in their property or give it up.

Posession.
