Turkey Scrambles Two F-16s To Syrian Border

Tyler Durden's picture

For the first time since July, Turkey scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to the Syrian border following a Syrian military helicopter bombed the border town of Azmarin. The WSJ reports that the two fighters flew along the border shortly after 2pm local time following heavy fighting between rebels and Syrian government forces. Booming explosions and the rattle of machine guns around Azmarin could be heard Friday morning from the small Turkish border town of Hacipasa. One eyewitness said the Syrian attack helicopter retreated when the Turkish jets flew along the border. Turkey's move on Friday to scramble jets close to the fighting inside Syria comes amid a sharp escalation of tensions along the shared 565-mile frontier.

Via WSJ:

HACIPASA, Turkey—Turkey scrambled two fighter jets to the border with Syria for the first time since July after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, eyewitnesses said, underlining heightened tensions along the neighbors' long border.

The F-16 fighter jets flew along the border shortly after 2 p.m. local time, following heavy fighting in between rebels and Syrian government forces in Azmarin, a Syrian border town opposed to President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

Booming explosions and the rattle of machine guns around Azmarin could be heard Friday morning from the small Turkish border town of Hacipasa.

One eyewitness said the Syrian attack helicopter retreated when the Turkish jets flew along the border.

Turkey's move on Friday to scramble jets close to the fighting inside Syria comes amid a sharp escalation of tensions along the shared 565-mile frontier.

...

Friday's move to scramble jets underlines escalated tensions along the border, but it isn't the first time Turkey has dispatched its fighters during the Syrian crisis. In July, after a Turkish F4 Phantom jet was shot down by Syrian forces, Ankara dispatched F16 fighters from Incirlik base in southern Turkey in response to Syrian helicopters flying near the province of Hatay. Two more F16s were scrambled from a base in the eastern city of Batman after Syrian helicopters were spotted close to the Turkish city of Mardin.

I think the real pertinent question is: Why are 'God's chosen people' always on the defensive in this world? If you are going against God, who then are you for?

Unless, of course, you actually take the time to read the Bible and understand what the covenant between God and "his chosen people" was supposed to be. The commonwealth of Israel has always been open to anyone (which the Jews and Christians will both deny), and they were simply supposed learn and demonstrate God's ways to the rest of the world and not worship anyone but Jehovah. They utterly failed to do this despite being given numerous chances. So, God sent Jesus to show us what it looks like to follow all God's Torah and his ways, (and, of course, redeem us from our sins by his sinless sacrifice as Christians do understand). Israel was never meant to be some kind of exclusionary "cool kids" clique that God designed for them, they were supposed to be everyone who is devoted to Him and Him alone.

You won't hear this angle from the Orthodox Jews or any mainstream Christian denomination. They have both decided that the other is flat wrong and just ignore each other. Sadly, neither side understands how closely their destinies are intertwined in the end, but I feel pretty confident that this is what the Bible actually teaches and either way prophesy says that the truth will seen by all, eventually.

Man in his arrogance will pollute everything he had even a modicum of control over (as with pretty much every organized religious "venture" throughout history). Each person must take responsibility to learn and build their own personal doctrine and NEVER blindly follow someone who appears to have it all figured out. But then again that's the real trick, now isn't it?

FSA appears to be intentionally attacking the Syrian regime near Turkey's border in an attempt to spark a war between the two countries.  After all we know that the FSA is made up primarily of non-Syrians (who happen to be AlCIAeda operatives).  War with Syria/Iran after November 6th seems increasingly likely.

*No one* has any evidence that the mortar rounds (a light weapon ideal for insurgents, that requires no complex logistics) was fired by government troops.

On the other hand, we know that the area it was fired from is rife with NATO/Saudi/Qatar-backed FSA terrorists who don't balk at murdering and terrorising the civilians in Syria, and hence wouldn't balk at killing a few Turks either (especially if they are Christian or non-salafist).

trafficking in armed attack helicopters, is a world away from small arms (up to and incl. mortars)

operationally, false flags are also more difficult as helicopters are short range, high signature vehicles, meaning owned assets aren't easily repainted and slipped across the border for a false flag op, esp when the host state has any sort of radar infrastructure

You, sir, are 100% correct.  The corruption and complete elimination of morals and ethics in journalism in the New Normal has happened with astonishing speed.

In Libya, authority was granted by UN resolution to "PROTECT CIVILIANS".  Russia and China signed onto that.  So NATO went out and enforced a no fly zone over Libya.  What happened next?  Gadaffi's forces STILL were winning.  They rolled up rebel positions in jeeps arranged to look like rebel jeeps.

NATO stretched the rules and decided the rebel armed forces were civilians and so they bombed attacks on them by Gadaffi forces.  Russia and China complained that this was beyond the UN authority.  NATO ignored that.  So Gadaffi forces stopped attacking so overtly and made slow, stealthy progress towards victory rather than fast progress.

Brent oil spiked up and all of a sudden enforcing the No Fly zone with so many sorties began to run up enormous costs for NATO.  NATO held a meeting and said . . . we must eliminate the Gadaffi regime and maybe we can do that under the UN authority.  They then began bombing purely defensive Gadaffi positions that were threatening no civilians at all.

Not long after that the rebel forces were able to march slowly forward and take Libya.  Russia and China effectively have said under no circumstances will they ever again agree to any UN authority to do essentially anything at all -- and they are right.

This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton.  She has destroyed any possible working relationship with the number 1 oil producer on the planet, which is Russia.  But is this reported in the press?  No.

Do you live in Lybia? If not, how the fuck would you KNOW if they are more or less free, dumbass?

Are we free in the US? Complex question that depends on what is meant by the word.

To anarchists, any government at all proves the individual is not free.

To absolute monarchists, as long as the King doesnt fuck with you, you are free.

In the US, the freedom to own property, guns, speak freely in a responsible way, the ability to worship what ever god you want or none at all, to vote for who you want for public office, etc, these are considered halmarks of being free.

But I dont know; maybe in your little nutshell you rulle the fucking universe. I also dont really care since you seem to read minds in Arabic from across the oceans and seas.

And yes, the MB has taken over these places, and right now they are being lax, but will likely impose sharia law, which isnt too bad if you are a Muslim. The rest of them are fucked, but thats not too many people, and John Stewart Mill would have argued that as long as the majority have more benefit it is good, so who am I to argue with a 19th century genius? lol.

I do think it an apparent truth that when people are willing to bleed and die to change a governemnt, even with foreign backing, there is something dreadfully wrong with that former government.

Own guns? Yeah, we can own some guns. So long as BATF approves said guns and the FBI approves your background check. I'll partly conced that one, but it could be a lot better.

The official position these days is that if you're not a Christian, you're golden. It's as PC to abuse Christians as it is to abuse white males.

Vote? Vote for whom? O'bomb-a? Mitt (magic undies) Ro-money. Some fuckin' choice.

I'll add a few.

Free to travel? Have you tried getting on a plane recently? Or even just driving into Canada or Mexico? (buzzer sound) not free there.

Free to assemble for redress of grievances? Nawp. If anybody 'important' is there, no protesting allowed. Otherwise you can protest from the isolated "free speech zone". What a fuckin' joke.

Maybe you haven't noticed that the first, fourth and fifth amendments, habeus corpus and posse comitatus have been repealed? NDAA 2012, "Patriot" (barf) Act, Trapwire, FISA and so on ring any bells?

You need permission from the gov. to drive a car, get married, build a house, fuck, build anything for that matter, cut down trees on your own property, hold a meeting, have a parade, set off fireworks, practice law, practice medicine, give a tattoo, sell your home, sell your car, make whisky, go boating, go fishing, hunt, keep bees. Begun the Cold Turkey War has.

Any opinions on whether or not Russia was actually providing arms to Syria via a passenger plane, which Turkey intercepted and forced to land?

The US is providing support to known terrorist groups to take out Assad, whom the US used to support.  Yet we still hold the "War on Terror" as a solemn duty.  Outrageously duplicitous.

And Iran is supplying weapons to Syria over Iraqi airspace -- I thought the US & Iraq controlling Iraqi airspace would not allow this to happen.  Unless the US wants Iran to dig themselves a bigger hole.

This all has been a poweder keg in the making, by design.  Fuse, meet lit match.

You don't quite have this right.

The US doesn't act in Iraq anymore without Iraqi authorization.  The Shiites have so much power in Iraq that there is no way they would authorize US missions to interdict such supply flights.

Beyond this, much more likely, supplies to Syria arrive by sea on Russian transport ships.  Hillary Clinton's insanity in Libya has destroyed any chance to influence the Russians, and with their position as #1 oil producer on the planet, they are essentially dominant.

of course was Russia providing arms to Syria. It's still their vassal, friend and ally, for Pete's sake! their most important naval base in the Med is there

for all that "the US used to support" Assad, Syria was only our friend because it joined the alliance against Iraq in the first Gulf War. the same way as Russia is supporting the NATO engagement in Afghanistan by keeping the supply lines over their territory open (now that Pakistan has shut them off), it's all specific "help" for specific purposes.

in the 19th Century it was called the Great Game. same region, nearly same players.

It's all about oblique isolation approaches against Iran - all aimed at preventing Iran of becoming too friendly with China (or Russia, though they have enough oil). and keeping those important US politics players, the Israelis, happy

meanwhile the region "risks" a new country rising: Kurdistan. and this would piss off Turkey, Iraq and Iran equally

Good point, inthemix. Here is all I can really say on that:

I was a volunteer back in the 1970s, got out in 83, and was an 11B for the whole time.

Everyone I knew in the infantry knew that there was a reasonable chance we could end up in a war. Everyone was OK with that for different reasons.

Some were in so they could fight for their country. Some were in to get the benefits for college and were playing the odds. If they lost and went to war they knew that the odds of them coming home in a body bag were very low, so they had no problem with that either. Some were in because they didnt want to go to prison and they really didnt give a fuck either way; life was already hell for them, they could not care less. Everyone knew that the folks at he top were lying assholes, but also knew that these cowards would only vote for an unpopular thing like war if they thought the public demanded it in someway, and if the people did such, then it would be a valid fight. Naive, but valid. At least they had the choice to volunteer.

Were it up to me, I wouldnt play in Syria for anyones benefit except the US or our closest allies. If Isreal, UK, France, Germany, Japan, etc, long time allies, get attacked, then we have to help them, IMO.

But spill our boys blood for the MB to gain power? nah, fuck that.

I have no problem with the Turks defending their countrymen and I suspect that Assad is trying to get the Turks to blunder in so he can plead for more help from Russia and Iran.

I dont think this would work out for him like he may think.

But all the same, we should not use military forces to help the MB. At most use some intel resources and not much more than that.

Don 't you see that it is impossible to distinguish between the two scenarios?

The whole idea of military alliances in the 21st Century has to be debated and reviewed.

I dont think it is exactly impossible, but it is difficult. The main factor driving our foreign policy seems to be pleasing the Wall Street banks and a few multinational ethnic groups which includes a lot of people from Isrealphiles to Chinese supporters who have no limits to what they want to let China do to anyone.

The middle class in the US is almost completely shut out of the electoral picture for the Presidential elections now. The two major parties are cooperating too much and have agreed to lock out smaller third parties, which is why no third party candidate has been in the Presidential debates since Perot.

International corporations and Wall Street bankers do not share the intersts of the average citizen and they will refuse to give up their control of the two main parties so we need a third party and major election reform, reform focussed on getting Big Money out of our elections.
