Super-Power Showdown - US vs. China

Tyler Durden's picture

These giants boast the world's largest economies and active militaries with their decisions influencing politics at a global level. Despite a massive trade agreement and many diplomatic meetings, the two nations struggle to maintain the semblance of a civil relationship. As pressure mounts from US leaders, China remains unfazed, coolly growing its military and economy. Master-of-Finance-Degrees provides the ultimate infographic of how these two titans of industry and power measure up when pitted head-to-head. Guess who wins?

You gotta set the "literacy" bar pretty low to believe the US has a 99% success rate.

I've actually started hoping for a Romney win, 'cause I'm afraid we won't get a war with China quick enough if we remain an Obamanation.

They left out one seriously important military item.

A vast majority of service, utility, etc., hardware have chips made in China.
Which have been backdoored, accessible and controllable from afar if synched even remotely via any system interfaced in the WWW.  (Public domain info, oft forgotten.)

Everybody can do backdoors. Some larger share of the Microsoft operating systems vulnerabilities were put in by design. The game works both ways. Personally, I like backdoors: it means both sides will always have doubts about how secret their supersecret weapons truly are -- and that will hinder the decision to resort to engage military action.

Prometheus418's picture

Hmmm.... never tried Safari.  Depite the news today. I do my regular internet tomfoolery on Chrome (when using Windows) and Chromium (when using Linux.)  Both have adblock, and neither show any ads- likely because Google just tracks everything on it, and therefore allows the preferences to work.  Opera on my phone does show them, but internet on a phone sucks IMO, so I don't even have an adblocker for it.

So, some advice, for what it's worth.  Accept your relatively beneign overlords for harmless things like ranting on Zerohedge and buying shit on eBay, and take the performance hit when it matters by running TOR integrated with Firefox.  It's slow and shitty, but safer than most things- I have far more faith in open-source code developed to allow people in repressive regimes to access information than I do in anyone with a profit motive.

I know that the common wisdom is that we must avoid being traced at all costs, but I could care less if .gov sees that I read a Reuter's article on a blog owned by ABC media, and then called some dude named Gully a douchebag.  Leaving the 99% of shit that doesn't really matter open to dissection builds a false profile that is better than a suit of armor.  Do it right, and you're just another blowhard on teh interwebz- but hide everything, and that blank spot is something worth probing.  Kind of like dealing with cops IRL- you can yell whatever you want at them, and declare your rights all day long to anyone who will listen, and it'll come to no more than a misdemenor at best- but god help you if they see you hiding or ditching something.

Just another way to look at it- I like the theory, and will continue to enjoy ad-free browsing for all my "socially acceptable" behavior.

Who loses?

Everyone.

While everything is going up in smoke or nuclear whisps, the bankers, who believe they have a bunker to get to, will be forced to maneuver through the mayhem that is going on around them. With luck, people will recognize their faces and 'street justice' will be swift. I figure less than 30%  will make it to their destinations. If those destinations exist.

The rest of the world will only exist as islands of scarce resources, even if 50 years of regrowth go by. By then, most of these bankers will be dead. And with luck, so will the entire kazzy nation which has pushed humanity to this brink (granted- it was done willingly by the herd leaders in each country).

Then maybe whatever crawls out of all this crap can develop something better. And with luck, they won't call themselves human, as we who are- have done nothing humane for ourselves or our children.

Is it only me who remembers the quote: "never get involved in a land war in Asia!"?!?

China would win a full-on encounter that was non-nuclear (which is to say that _everyone_ loses in a nuke exchange), cause the US people cannot stomach a conflict that requires suffering actual loss and enduring real pain... I believe the Vietnam conflict can be taken as the yard-stick on what the public is willing to endure.  If China has anything, it's got a populace that's willing to endure whatever it takes to get a leg up.

IMHO of course, what do I know anyways.... ?

Manufacuring base wins?

When there are diminishing planetary resources, tumbling consumer buying power, and the workforce is increasingly engaged in "servicing" one another, having a declining and fully depreciated manufacuring base (US) might well be the advantage.

Consider steel.  China has the world's largest production capacity, and millions are now employed constructing even more capacity.  Unless somebody is going to build another whole China, this might prove redundant.

Hell, back in my days, that was when rape was a manly advance, men were men, drunks were just acceptable heavy drinkers and you could feel your secretary's buns any time without impunity because there were no sexual harassment laws or political correctness.  Midget tosses and strippers were often seen about birthdays.

Look, lemme tell ya' why Wall Street is so fucked up.
If you were on a trading floor in the good old days, every other word was swearing, and each swear word had a specific meaning.  Swearing was an art form.  Beer was in the coke machines and 3 martini lunches were de rigeur... and if your expense account wasn't big enough, you got reamed to go party harder with the clients.

The top of the FDA unapproved consumption pyramid were drugs and alcohol, penicillin for VD treatments.  Car services were on call 24/7/365 to get you from point A to Z when you were in a state of total blackout and all was joyfully accepted without question by the boss man.  As long as you made lots of money for him.

And nobody had yet decided to describe their clients a "Muppets"  (LOL)

Forcing yourself on a Lesbian in a Barn would have been considered good fun and sport.

BS. One M1 Tank sitting on the beach can take out 1,000 ground personnel per minute. We also have well over 150 million armed and well trained Americans with guns. If China had enough ships to carry that many people, they would all be blown apart in the water long before they got here. It's one thing to be critical of your country. It's another thing entirely to be just anti American, and a stupid one at that.

And how so? Countries default on their debt all the time. Hell Bernanke could print that money overnight and buy that much and then the Yuan skyrockets against the dollar and China's exports collapse. Remember, their economy is only held up by exports and slave wages. Foxconn employees working for two bucks an hour can't buy the Iphones they make. WHo's playing who for a fool here? You might want to take a few minutes to think about it. All this BS we hear about China taking over we heard about Japan in the eighties. The unstoppable economic force, the manufacturing prowess, better education, much higher savings, etc. and where are they now? If it pleases you to be nervewracked about the imminent takeover by the Chinese, so be it. Some people enjoy the adrenaline rush of hiding under their beds waiting for the boogeyman. However the facts just don't support it. China's economy is nothing but a cheap labor exporting factory. When they lose the cheap labor, their competitive advantage goes, too. They do not have anywhere near the internal demand to sustain themselves.

So they use up their citizens trying to make money. So don't we in the form of lousy education, laws, and a whole host of ill's we can't pay for. Their citizens can buy any amount of gold at their banks, we don't believe gold is even money. They can call in our debts, we can't call in anything but a trade war. If we were not so hard headed and cruel, we might not expect to be treated like we treat others. But we are.

A) If 200 million chinese males between 18 and 55 disappeared overnight, do you think it might be noticed? How the hell would you expect to keep that a secret?

B) How many bullets per capita do they have? Making an army having one guy with a bolt action rifle and one guy carrying a handful of bullets is not going to win out against the billions of rounds of munitions America has

C) unless you are talking about a land war in mainland China, those numbers are meaningless. Logistics, and if going off of Asian landmass, Air and Sea power are massive factors.

D) All irrelevant since both sides have nukes; only wars might be proxy wars in Africa / Southeast Asia.

E) Does China have any local sources of materials to make massive amounts of some type of gunpowder? Maybe potash from the upper Yangtze? Or grow loads of cotton? Either way, high chance of massive food shortages as a result of misallocating resources.

Your scenario is wrong, but your conclusion is correct. Assume the Chinese develop a ship that can carry 5,000 storm troopers. Assume they can build 1,000 of these. Assume they can afford to launch this armada against the US West coast.

Everyone here is afraid of a domestic drone spotting them smoking a joint in their backyard. Does anyone seriously think that the Chinese could mask this fleet from American satellites, radar, drones, and aircraft? At which point, you don't need any tanks on the California shore; any ship that crosses into some arbitrary US declared exclusion zone (100 miles? 200 miles?) gets taken out by any one of the numerous varieties of smart bombs the US has on hand. Or by hunter killer subs. Or by mines. Or by.. well, you get the drift.

Same thing would hold true if the US tried to invade China or Russia, or if Russia tried to invade the US or China. It's the mathematical triangle inequality writ large.

The next big war is one of subversion. So far, the neo-fascists - already in power in Russia and China - are making huge inroads into the US. Romney is no panacea, but at least he's a stop gap. Bambam is four more years of capitulation.

Not to burst your bubble, but those ships would be following and guarded by submarines, who could cause a lot of chaois before the big landing. I mean, who would want to move there on a $2/hr wage anyhow, and bring your own fuel.

Who the hell would make a beach landing? If it were even remotely possible to covertly recruit, train and equip millions of chinese soldiers without anyone noticing, and then load them into shipping containers and get all of them through the borders without a single container being searched, the most successful plan would be to have them deployed to thousands of locations all at once, and probably with nuclear warheads to hold cities hostage. Do Wal-Mart shipments get checked by customs, or are they given priority and waved through?

If you look at the U.S. Navy's rivals, China and Russia, their entire naval forces are based on defending against American aggression. Russia has one aircraft carrier/heavy missile cruiser that carries a few jets and China as an experimental one from Ukraine, neither of which come close to American Supercarrier displacement and capability.

Russian and Chinese fleets can handle limited coastal landing support but mainly defend trade and their coasts from American carrier battle groups, which is why Russia lays claim to the most advanced anti-ship missiles.

China and Russia have neither the capability nor technology to mount American-style invasions against the United States unless they landed on the Channel Islands off So Cal and somehow moved 180+ strike/fighter jets with fuel, munitions and spare parts to said islands and constructed airbases with defenses and infrastructure and etc, etc, etc...........

........did I just write a movie plot? Apocalypse Orange County. I like that. How backed up is 110 near the Hollywood Freeway? My idea is saved here, nobody try to beat me to it.

China doesnt need to invade the USA.  They just need to stand the US off while they invade Siberia (Resources, 1.31 E7 km^2 ... bigger than europe), SE Asia (wives for the gender imbalance population) and get enough troops to Africa (more living space / resources)  to make taking it back too expensive for Americans.
