This evening's main event (well aside from the baseball and the football), taking place in beautiful Boca Raton, Florida will be fought over six rounds focused on the 'never-a-dull-moment' topic of Foreign Policy. After last week's STFU stare on the Benghanzi bungle, we expect the incumbent from the blue corner to come out swinging (on his experience). The challenger from the red corner, will likely keep his distance early on as general items such as 'America's role in the world' are discussed but once his jab has been measured, and the debate switches to 'The changing face of the Middle East', we would expect the haymakers to start to be thrown. It is actually the most appropriate question. As a state, given budget restraints, how far are you willing to act militarily, globally? Really, what is the line? The one thing Obama has not done tonight is tie Romney's "gun and weapons" commitment with how much it costs. To balance the budget, we have to cut the military and maybe by half. Why are we this involved in other people's business?

To be fair, some of these questions shouldn't even be answered. If I were at that table I would make the vast majority of my answers 3-4 sentences.
Obama just said that the American people are responsible to defend Israel in any and every instance. Romney says we should not wait to defend Israel but should attack whoever Israel says we should attack and as soon as we are told to. Both are claiming Iran is planning to wipe Israel off the map and Americans are responsible to destroy Iran to protect Israel. This is what passes for foreign policy debate.
Romney just claimed the US Navy is weaker now than it was in 1917. I got news for Romney, and unlike Romney I actually served in the US Navy, the US Navy is the stongest Naval force in the world. It could defeat every Navy on the planet put together with about 1/4 of the the US Naval forces. If Romney is going to lie like that he should at least be a little familiar with that he is telling lies about. Oh, he also says the Airforce is weaker now than at any time since it's founding in 1947. Well, what do you say to a lie like that, Clearly Romney learned all he knows about the US military when he was a draft dodger Mormon missionary in France. It really takes an idiot ignorant war monger to sit there and make Obama look like a military genius!
Obviously we have two candidates debating who will kill the most people for Israel and who will spend trillions of dollar we don't have on weapons. The quoted statement is only a part of a longer post that has garnered far more ups than downs. I am not here challenging the thoughtfulness of the full post. What is of interest to me, however, is the matter of fact nature of the military boast the quoted statement makes. Look at it. Then, examine the assumptions upon which it has, of necessity, to be based.
In no particular order, it appears to assume some or all of the following:
1--more naval weaponry by a factor of 4 than the rest of the world combined is an advantage rather than an extraordinary waste.
2--successful warfare in the 21st century continues to depend on having more and bigger more lethal weapons platforms that ride on or under the water and/or fly and land on elongated skateboards and/or emit high energy death rays of the type first demonstrated in recent times by Nicola Tesla emanating from sea, land, space or from the moon.
3--unlike the rest of the world (combined) there is no limit on US capacity to deploy weapons.
I here challenge the accuracy, let alone sanity, of those assumptions. I think they are flawed.
