Meet Sandy: Single Furious Hurricane Seeking GDP-Boosting Landfall
"What's different about Hurricane Sandy and why should we be afraid?" is the anxious question that Bloombergs' Tom Keene poses in the clip below. The answer - it's the size! The wind-field is considerably larger than normal with tropical storm strength winds (as the chart below indicates) extending over a very large area. As we warned yesterday, the storm surge in low-lying areas is the most threatening and the clarity of the problem is highlighted by the graphic below as Sandy approaches the Atlantic coast Monday or Tuesday. With the Atlantic unusually warm (meaning more fuel for the hurricane) and the new moon, the title of the Bloomberg clip says it all: "This is how scared you should be of Hurricane Sandy".

I live on Buzzards Bay..Cape Cod. In 1938 the water was up to the second story in downtown Wareham. This is a very similar set up.
Any bay or sound with southeastern exposure just north of the landfall is gonna get hammered hard with the large wind field and astronomically high tides. Go long sump pumps!

If you live on the E. coast the worst landfall point for you is usually a bit south of your location since tropical storms turn counter-clockwise. If the cyclone makes contact with your area between 6 and 12 o'clock (the left side of its circle, not time of day) you will get more of an offshore, not onshore wind and a somewhat lesser tidal surge.
If Sandy makes a direct hit on Delaware as the above map shows I'd say the Jersey shore would get walloped the worst.
But would the storm surge be enough to wash all the hair gel off the Jersey Shore?
