Live New York Web (And Sound) Cam

Tyler Durden's picture

Because the only thing more informative than watching a shut down New York get blown (away) by Sandy, is hearing it live. Watch, and listen, as downtown New York, very much unprepared for what may be a record flood surge, gets the Venice treatment.

It's already flooding areas that were barely flooded from Irene and we have not even had the storm yet. Battery Park already has a foot and it has not even started raining.

Simple question, what fraction of the US population will be impacted by this storm?

As for California, the 80 cents on the dollar that they get back on the Fed. taxes is because they are subsidizing the heartland Red States.... You know, the ones that get a free ride and don;t even realize it?

Some recent commentary I came across:

It appears Sandy has about 4 hours left before crossing the sharp SST gradient defining the Gulf Stream. That will signal the end of intensifying any further, tropically. But this is when baroclinic energy will really start hitting the storm.

It almost defies logic, this storm. Think about it...

For the last 4 days there's been something going against this storm which would have killed off most other storms but, conversely, there was also some atmospheric mechanism at play counteracting its main hindrance.

It went through the roughest terrain of Cuba, but did so as an intensifying, accelerating storm. Came through on the other side only 5kt weaker than she went in.

Then Sandy met the upper low over the southeastern Gulf. Extremely dry air through a deep layer of the atmosphere, 50kts of shear. Piece of cake. She'll just place herself within the divergent sector of the shear pattern to maintain.

Found a small niche and changed just enough, structurally, to develop an inner core just as she hit the Gulf Stream, to maximize as best a storm of this size could, the additional heat energy provided.

This brings us to where we are at present and in the near future. Leaving the Gulf Stream, yes, but entering a baroclinic environment ripe for explosive development of a cyclone transitioning from tropical to extra-tropical.

Every time this storm met a challenge; mountains, shear, dry air, cold waters, it not only shrugged it off, but grew stronger. It's like this storm is destined to chart a course for the worst-case scenario.

That brings us to tonight when the storm is expected to make landfall. High tide. High astronomical tide. Right angle to the coastline. Bottlenecks and bays. Most densely populated region of the country. Record IKE. A once-in-200 year wind event in a region inland clear cut since the last big event such as this (before any reliable records were kept).

Doesn't "extra-tropical" simply mean outside the tropics?

:/

Mon, 10/29/2012 - 12:44 | 2928172 Flakmeister
Flakmeister's picture

Nope... it has to due with how the storm "fuels" itself...

During extratropical transition, the cyclone begins to tilt back into the colder airmass with height, and the cyclone's primary energy source converts from the release of latent heat from condensation (from thunderstorms near the center) to baroclinic processes. The low pressure system eventually loses its warm core and becomes a cold-core system. During this process, a cyclone in extratropical transition (known across the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans as the post-tropical stage)[13][14] will invariably form or connect with nearby fronts and/or troughs consistent with a baroclinic system. Due to this, the size of the system will usually appear to increase, while the core weakens. However, after transition is complete, the storm may re-strengthen due to baroclinic energy, depending on the environmental conditions surrounding the system. The cyclone will also distort in shape, becoming less symmetric with time.

Somehow I am not surprised that you don;t get it...

the Tahitian ladies were actually topless in the book

Ummm, I think that was an issue of National Geographic.

Oh, no.  In the film with Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, his Tahitian girl was a real stunner.  Very nice.  It is quite authentic to the book, according to your definition.

It is funny because Captain Bligh was awarded one of the King's wives as a trophy to go below and...you know.  He instructed Mr. Christian to concoct some emergency after he'd been below with her for five minutes.  She was a buxom lass, to say the least, as I would imagine an island King's wife would be.

Taking his time, Mr. Christian finally says, "Captain Bligh, sir!  The ship is afire!"

Did I mention the music was by VanGelis, of Chariots of Fire and (the new...) Metropolis fame?  Eerie sounds, perfectly drawn.

It was a wonderful picture.  If you haven't seen it, you really should, as it seemed right out of the history books.  Also co-starring a couple of newbies, Daniel Day Lewis as second mate, Mr. Fryer (who really should have been first mate...no, dammit!  Captain!) and Liam Neeson as the roustabout Churchill.

One excellent and highly under-rated film.  Damn near a masterpiece, if I may say so.

:D

NYC evacuation plans (Zone A only, at present) look woefully inadequate compared with the forecasters' predictions of storm surge.  "Zone A" evacuation is a standard NYC response to any Category 1 hurricane.  But Sandy is not just any Category 1 hurricane, the danger should not be judged by wind-speed alone, due to the size of the storm and geography of its landfall, the storm surge is predicted to be massive.

Lived near a creek and crossed it one summer evening, it was 6" deep; about 45 minutes later, a thunderstorm cell got wedged in a valley - cars, hot water tanks, portions of homes were being washed down that formerly placid 6" creek.  Bad things can happen very quickly....

In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
