Postcards From An Underwater New York

Once the surge levees break, the water level just soars and covers everything in a "reverse Titanic" as the following pictures demonstrate:

- Brooklyn Fire Dispatch reporting 300 patients in a nursing home... taking on rising water, need immediate evacuation.

Very sad...

- NYC 911 getting 10,000 calls per half hour (WNYC)

Liberals shocked that 911 can't save them... reality hitting statists... ain't reality a bitch?

- Mayor Bloomberg said he'd been assured NYU hosptal backup generators would work. They did not. Evacuatns underway. #sandy @takeactionnews

Great success.

"NYC 911 getting 10,000 calls per half hour (WNYC).  Liberals shocked that 911 can't save them"

Did you really say that precisely below "Brooklyn Fire Dispatch reporting 300 patients in nursing home ... taking on rising water, need immediate evacuation"?

And you don't even see the disconnect, do you.  The nursing home owner probably didn't want to spend private money moving patients, you think?  And a lot of people calling 911 are probably other old people who couldn't leave and it has nothing to do with their politics.  Oh, I forgot.  No Tea Party member has ever been in need and turned to the police, fire, etc.  What a fucking joke you people are.

Subsidized medicare doctors (and even privatized medicine) refused to treat an endocrine, metabolic disorder.  Where do they get their funds from?  THE GOVERNMENT.
WHO CURED ME?  ***I DID!!!***

I am entitled to that subsidy.  The doctors and esp. BIG PHARMA exploiting medicare getting subsidies for botox for "migraines" and uh, medical marijuana stiffed me, a taxpayer for adequate care.

It took 2 years, but I'm better now.  Fighting unemployment, inflation, etc. but I got better for $150-200/year in vitamins, exercise, research... and some for doctor visits, blood work, xrays.  Much less than the thousands I would have to pay for the surgery they wanted me to get in order to just diagnose the damn thing.

I took the initiative, without "permission" from the medical community and fixed my own health.   I've been blocked by some support groups getting tax breaks that I should be entitled to; by exploiting MY illness and suffering.

Why do I owe them any money?  I saved them A LOT of money.  I know how to save the country A LOT of money in care for diabetes and endocrine/autoimmune issues now.

They owe ME what I paid in medicare since I started working.

The government not only wastes that money, they embezzle it.   The fraud I dealt with on a grand scale is embezzlement.  This is why I vouch for smaller government.

The consumers need and are entitled to more control.

The point is, all else being equal, the State will always do a shittier job of providing any given service than private enterprise, and perhaps the failure of emergency services in NYC tonight will help a few Leftists appreciate that fact: a small silver lining to an otherwise unfortunate event.

And in regard to your holier than thou attitude...

Rush, is that you?  Pretty bird want a cracker?

So tell me again how the emergency services failed?  What would private enterprise do -- hire Aquaman?  Build a 20 foot wall around NY to prevent a historic flood?  Or is there a company of Mermen that would save everyone?  You are a joke.  Blow it out your own ass.

It is impossible to say in detail how private emergency services would differ from those provided by the State, but it can be stated with certainty that they would meet the demands of the consumers of emergency services better than the State.

Why?

1. The State has no competition. This means that no matter how poorly it performs, consumers of its services have no option of turning to a competitor for those services. Moreover, since there are no competitors, consumers don't even have a basis of comparison for determining whether or not the State-provided service is shitty.

2. The State externalizes its costs. That is, if the State loses money in providing some service, no matter, as it can always increase taxes. A private firm has to be economical, if they make losses, the owner loses his investment. Whereas, a State can afford to make losses indefinitely with essentially no consequences (for itself, that is).

3. Rational economic activity is based on market prices and calculation of profits and losses. The State usually does not even try to operate on a profit-loss basis. They ignore costs (since they're externalized anyway), and they don't care about profits (since no one owns the State), and so they decide whether and how to conduct some operation (whether a service or infrastructure project or anything else) on an essentially arbitrary basis, a political basis. Any private enterprise which operated in the manner of the State would go out of business. But the State cannot go bankrupt because (a) it can externalize its costs, and (b) it has no competitors.

The end result is that consumers are forced to buy services from the State which are of lower quality and/or of higher price than what could be produced on the market by private firms.

look at the amount of damage to infrastructure, tunnels, tube, property, cars etc etc and tell me that wasn't worth some minimal investment in something more than a pitiful 5 foot sea wall 'defence'

Lots of flooding around the shorelines, but not a whole lot more in the rest of the city. We got lots of wind, very little rain and no flooding in the Bronx, and as far as I know, only one person has died in NYC, earlier in the evening from a falling tree in Queens. A strong storm, but certainly not a city-wide catastrophe, at least as far as I can tell...

But it this nothing short of a huge win for both A) Obama winning a second term & B) 1st & 2nd Quarter GDP should be over 6% (in each quarter) from rebuilding??

Fiscal cliff is coming. That is a for sure. The rest is one expensive pipe dream a bankrupt nation cannot afford. NY will have to do with broken down infrastructure for a while. Just like so many other places in the world that got hit by desaster and couldn't throw billions from nothing at each and every problem.

There is no room in the budget for the massive expense needed to restore NYC back to the same level of service as yesterday. If anything, the effort will take allot more time than most here are willing to realize.

I'm not even going to mention the fact that insurers and re-insurers will need to liquidate from their holdings in order to make massive payouts on claims. Imagine liquidation in a volumeless market on anything from real estate, equities, bonds to commodity futures contracts.

AIG is still being sued over their failure to payout after Katrina. This is 7 years later. The money was worth more in 2005 and we embarked on a good period of growth. There was credibility and confidence in the markets. Insurance companies had no problems raising liquidity.

Even the Fed can't monetize 'em all.

Are you joking? Heck, all of the costs will be securitized and sold to the Fed at a premium by Monday.
