The East Coast In Pictures: The Morning After

Tyler Durden's picture

Stunning pictures of the devastation the east coast wakes up to the morning after.

First light over Manhattan as New York wakes up on Tuesday. Much of the island is without power and much of the city remains closed. The Goldman building once again boasts the best power generators and is a true beacon of what NYC is all about.

Whitehall Subway Station (via Andrew Cuomo)

Streets in New York are littered with debris as the floodwaters subside. A record storm surge of more than 13 feet (4m) deluged lower Manhattan.

Residents continue to be evacuated from their homes along the coast. Many had chosen to ignore the mandatory evacuation notices issued on Monday.

Early morning in Cape May, New Jersey, the clear-up begins. Earthmovers clear sand from the coastal road flooded by the storm surge.

Much of New York's public transport network was flooded. Here the waters burst through a lift shaft in a rail station in Hoboken, New Jersey. It could be days before it is fully functioning.

Firefighters were hampered by the floods in their attempts to bring under control a large fire which destroyed more than 50 homes in Queens, New York.

The damage caused by Sandy extended over a huge swathe of the East Coast. In Washington DC, early morning traffic rolls past an uprooted tree.

The replica ship HMS Bounty sinks beneath the waves off the North Carolina coast, photographed by the US Coastguard who rescued 14 people from the ship.

Buildings in Breezy Point, NY have completely burned down.

And...????

Ok.......so who were the idiots that decided to stay on the ship?  Thanks for saving them so they can continue breeding.

I was on the Bounty when it visited my city in May.  It had a big diesel engine and a huge propeller.  The crew had all the characterists of  carnival workers, not sailers.  The ship was recently put up for sale and I don't understand why it headed out in the storm.

In a STORM, one does not want a ship banging against the pier it's moored to. You get underway to SAVE the ship by outrunning a storm.  If engines/sails fail, and you've not gotten far enough away, that's what happens. Not idiocy, their number came up, for the shit-storm. Unfortunate and tragic for two sailor's families, and an insurance company's pissed too. It's not a fuckin' ski-doo, you assholes(fuckin' lubbers, back to your latte and CNBC)!

That ship had zero chance of outrunning this hurricane.  Zero.  Don't talk to me like I'm stupid.

"The vessel left Connecticut on Thursday with a crew of 11 men and five women, ranging in age from 20 to 66. Everyone aboard knew the journey could be treacherous."

They weren't trying to outrun the storm.  They took the ship far out to sea - east - to get to the other side of the storm. and then headed south from there.  Obviously they didn't get east enough.  They had a show in St. Petersburg, Florida to get to (so they say).  The water where they sank is 80 degrees; some hold out hope of finding the Captain alive.

Because he didn't have you on board, you obviously know every fuckin' thing there is about sailing. You and Breitbart. I suggest you find his survivor's address' and write, maybe tell them what he should have done, they should have done. I mean, you were onboard, for that tour once, and would have done such and such, based on this retained vast knowledge of the vessel. Hope that goes well for you, mate!

I've said before that I enjoy foul weather, but weather+poop=yuck (as we're seeing).

I think (today) that Romney will complete the upset (both popular and electoral) and the right-side cows will be calmed. The left-side cows don't like guns, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

Krugman idolizes Keynes. Krugman is a happy man this morning.

Keynes said that all disasters have a silver lining of economic growth. He reasons that rebuilding efforts represent a net gain to the overall economy. One can often hear this idea repeated in the modern economic debate, especially after Katrina and now after the Japanese tsunami. After 9/11, super-pundit Paul Krugman wrote in his NY Times column After the Horror

Just add more to the natinal debt.

<I live in a bustling rural town in Pennsylvania called, "Union Dale".

It's population is about 500.

I work in a distribution center, but not just ANY distribution center, THEE distribution center. McLane Distribution.

It services New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Guess what states are getting pounded with the Hurricane Sandra (lol) Superstorm? Us three.

Well this morning, in the a.m., a transformer blew-up. Meaning? No power. The largest distribution center in the Continental United States cannot bring their customers product. Who are their customers?

Walmart, K-mart, Target, Nearly every local gas station from Sunoco's to 7-11's, etc.

Where does everyone go before/during/after a storm to get products? Well, now you see it.

The Walmart in Dickson City, PA is literally completely empty of milk, bread, and eggs. When I mean literally, I mean to the fullest extent of the word.

THE devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy can only be fixed with a new wave of unregulated investment banking, Mitt Romney has claimed.

The Republican candidate said there was no need for the New York Fire Department to deal with the large crane arm dangling over Manhattan as it could be placed gently onto a huge pile of money made by Goldman Sachs.

He added: "You then lower it gradually to the ground by removing money at the bottom of the pile and paying it out as bonuses. Voila!"

I'm hoping this is a temporary killshot to the local rental market so we can get a better deal in January.

And any poopooing my wife was doing about have emergency plans/bags GTG at all times is now silenced.

I realize he was likely up during the night getting updates, etc.

But, I find it odd that even His Royal Ineptness has been so quiet -- hmm, I'm thinking the people who have batteries in their radios might need to hear from their fearless leader about now.  It would seem like the Presidential thing to do.

I guess there is no back-up generator power available for the teleprompter, eh?

"Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts." *

Okay so the 80 homes burning down really sucks for those people. Assuming it wasn't a condemned section of town that was intentionally burned down under the  guise of hurricane damage to make room for some new development. But other than that, have we lost all sense of proportion? I see nothing stunning or really approaching devastation in those pictures. Well, okay, if that guy's iPhone would quit working that might be close. But still...

Worked with a group of volunteers rebuilding some homes in Mississippi after Katrina and one of the locals showed me his prized collection of silver pocket watches that was one big clump of nasty metal. Electrolysis is a bitch.

Any dis-similar metals touching one another will fuse/corrode like an old alkaline battery was leaking all over them.  Nearly every electrical piece of equipment touched by the seawater will be ruined and need to be replaced.

Including lost business and wages, this will be a $100 Billion natural disaster. Sandy was the equivalent of a series of strong tropical storms or Cat 1 hurricanes making landfall every 40 or 50 miles from CT to VA. It's not the damage in a series of dramatic photos but the totality of hundreds of miles of shoreline, hundreds of towns and cities, and millions of affected people that need be tolled.

It's a desaster for NY. The media hype is actually still downplaying the problems this city and the people will have to endure in the days and weeks going forward. Many here have simply no clue how important electrical grids and mass transportation systems are to the economy of a mega city like NY. Tonight will get interesting when the power is still out. God forbid the power is out longer than 2 days, 2 nights.

The power is most important. No power, no fridges, no coolers, no heating, no elevators. No television, no cell phone chargers, no cordless phones. No electronic payment transactions. Folks, think about it.

Then comes the problem of restoring mass transit to 5 million riders of the NY subway system on a daily basis. The people that make the city work don't live in Manhattan. The people that service those who are able to afford the expensive real estate in the city, do not live in the city. Think about that. What good is a city and expensive real estate if it doesn't function because the most important cogs of the wheel are several miles outside?

Next comes food supply.

I get visions of London during the air raids or Berlin during the Russian embargo. Not anything I'd ever want to be a part of. My advice to those living there would be to leave and stay with relatives outside of the city. Although that might be impossible at this point as there are no flights or trains going either. If you can afford to leave, you're better off in the short and midterm and you're also not a drain on the rest of the city who can't afford to go. Something like that.

Mayor Bloomberg is holding back. I can tell from his style that he knows it's much worse than he's able to admit. Panic has to be avoided as long as possible.

Dito. I've been to NY numerous times. Mostly business. Not all NYers are bankers. And most bankers are wankers anyway. 9/11 was bad in a shock and awe kind of way but it galvanized the people and let's not forget, it affected only a small part of the city directly. As much as 9/11 brought out the best of NY, Sandy will bring out the worst. I'm sorry to say and hope to be proven wrong. Cheers.

Sandy has indeed exposed the worst in people, in so many ways

it's exposed the Govt tragedy for all to see. That High Priest of public health and safety focused on bullying people and commerce but naked having done absolutely zip to protect NY's sea walls

While they eulogise and subsidise garbage (trains, tubes and rail) by robbing cars and truckers of tax it is the public transport that's crippled and the cars and trucks that'll carry the workload in these dark days that the anti-car toerags of politics should suck on

so political mistake (crap sea defence) compounds on political mistake (rubbish public transport). The only saving grace is there wasn't a further 2 mega political mistakes as exposed at Japans Fukinshambles, going nuclear and planting it on a tsunami facing seaboard

The private sector will ultimately have to pay the bill for not only New Yorks mistakes in regulatory incomeptence in banking but also New Yorks mistakes in transport and dealing with simple environmental threats to the city

The key here would be "no people"... the fookers should have gotten out days before the 'cane hit.  Don't go back until the city can support basic needs.

Shit, I've been through many hurricanes... lost everything I owned in one of 'em.  But I had brains enough to get the fook out of it's way.  Shit, if you live on a piece of land called an "island" and you can take a bridge to get off you have no excuse for being stuck in the shit after it hits.

This would also be a good time for the working Class folks that New York's Vampire squids have been preying off of to think about calling in sick. The Banksters have had such a good time robbing them blind, it would be a sight to behold when they are trying to deal with things like overflowing toilets and all the other aftereffects of a hummming city that has had the on switched to off.

Also a  real good time to talk about shared sacrifice in a more meaningful and urgent manner.
