NYSE, Nasdaq To Reopen Tomorrow

Tyler Durden's picture

Because while to ConEd, the bulk of New York south of 34th Street can operate without electricity for days, the stock exchange must.be.online.or.else.the.terrorists.win:

  • NYSE TO OPEN FOR NORMAL TRADING OPERATIONS ON WEDNESDAY
  • NASDAQ STOCK MARKET, OTHER NASDAQ OMX-OWNED EXCHANGES OPEN WED

Why? Just so hedge funds can square away position for month end. In other news, CNN furious trying to figure out how the NYSE TV stuido in downtown Manhattan (because all the trading actually takes place out of a fortress in Mahwah, NJ), can operate under 3 feet of water.

They better open tomorrow.  Any retail "investors" left should realize by now that money can be locked up without notice.  What if you needed your money but couldn't sell because it was in a closed stock market?

Insurance claims will be forcing NY and NJ funds to be selling off bonds and ETF's preemptively to cover losses. That coud drive the markets down significantly, provided there's no intervention. But what are the chances of that happenning, right?!

May I suggest a useful experiment …..

Shut down Wall street for 2 years rather then 2 days and see what happens.

Maybe it does not supply critical life support after all – shock horror.

Maybe if America shits out this parasite for two years it will be better off….maybe.
Although I don’t think the UK would be better off somehow given its small island nature but the US ?

EOM is only part of the decision to open. They want to demonstrate that NY is not completely cut off and offline. But it is. It doesn't take much these days to trigger a full blown stampede and panic. Every day they can is another day closer to restoration. What we see in NY is a perfect example of can kicking. The alternative to not being open for trading tomorrow would be a declaration of defeat. As much as we would all like to see truth and order restored to the markets, the illusion that everything is working fine and OK is what allows us to live another day. The chaos that will ensue when (not if) the wheels come off, is not being televised by CNN.

@walkure

i have a really bad feeling about this that i had once before........february 2003 when the shuttle columbia came apart and scattered debris all over bush country in texas..... a truly ominous portent........ a month or so later we were in baghdad.

the timing and location of this event (nyc/election) are almost biblical in nature.  sandy is 7 years and a couple of months after katrina (2005) and katrina was about 7 years after hurricane mitch (1998) which killed 11K people when it came ashore in central america.

without power the 'morts in nyc have lots of problems.....water and sewer for starters...they are trapped......there is also no way in or out...no jit deliveries for foods, medicines, other essentials......does yomama play some kind of berlin airlift redux card????????????

I'm so confused!

Someone, please help me here:

I thought the whole POINT of 9/11, the ONE thing we learned was that you cannot have all your operations in one vulnerable place! When everything shut down post tower fall, everybody was talking about how things needed to be decentralized so that if some nutcase dropped an EMP or a nuke in NY they would be able to get 'capitalism' (yeah, yeah quit your snickering) up and running in a reasonably quick amount of time.

Now we find out that if God drops one of His EMPs on NY the whole system shuts down because it is the heart of the market. WHAT GIVES! Where is all that emergency planning they supposedly did after 9/11?

does this not put the lie to the whole exercise?

We walk into a room with all these emergency planning people and we ask, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.....WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN *DOING* FOR THE LAST *11 YEARS* IN THIS MEETING ROOM?!!!"

You make the mistake in believing the world needs the stock market to function. Now the wealth without labor crowd needs the stock market, but anyone actually working a productive job does not.

The exchange didn't need to shut down, as I understand it that actual computers are in bunker like buildings in NJ that don't even have windows. It got shut down to protect the interests of the powerful players in NY. They might not have been able to control the sell off if it had been open. Also players like the FED would be very concerned that a single fund needing a radical drop in the market might be able to sprint past the PPT on very light volume. At this point if the SP does not go under 1400 I will go long, nothing can make the market go down if it doesn't break resistance over all of the bad news flow. I can't imagine it being worse lol.

You need to brush up on your Keynesianism.  This is dream scenario for all the followers of Frederic Bastiat out there - just imagine how many broken windows there are!!  Each of these "once-in-a-lifetime" emergencies just represents another opportunity for states to declare a state of emergency and receive federal funds to fill their budget gaps.  They represent another opportunity for us to drive GDP with additional unbudgeted federal government spending.  Forget the 100B in destroyed property - that was already counted.  Just focus on all the new jobs we'll create to clean it up.  Just another stimulus package.
