Americans Aged 18-29 Have A More Favorable Response To Socialism Than To Capitalism

Tyler Durden's picture

In the prior post, we showed a presentation that looked at America from the perspective of a corporation and how it would be completely unsustainable. Luckily, there is little probability that America will ever have anything to do with S-Corp status, and far more likely end up as an agrarian Kolhoz. The reason: based on a Pew survey of America's youth, or those aged 18-29, more have a positive view response toward Socialism than they do toward Capitalism. We will leave it at that.

Socialism: 49% Positive / 43% Negative:

And Capitalism: 46% Positive / 47% Negative:

Go peddle your horse piss elsewhere, chief. You are 100% free to create some socialist/communist/fascist utopia, so long as you are able to do so without pointing your gun, or the guns of gummint, at other people

That's one long winded strawman.

Good luck to you too.

Ever try to explain to a socialism advocate that it amounts to wonton violence against innocent people?  They don't want to hear it.  How could anyone not want to help somebody?  They never understand that the underlying principle is institutionalized violence against those that have never hurt anyone.  In a truly free society where the law only targets theft, violence, theft by fraud, and coercion... the only way you can get rich is by helping people via voluntary transactions.

This is not a new or unusual phenomenon - to roughly quote Winston Churchill: "If you're not a liberal when you are 20 you have no heart. And if you are not a conservative by the time you are 40 you have no brains!"

if the individual cannot make a decision (please note it's not a 'right' but their own determination) to retain their own earnings, but it is involuntarily taken (taxed) from him/her by some collective ideal of the greater good then that is neither freedom nor democracy

if you don't pay tax you are criminalised ...but it is your money

a recent CNBC interview with an IRS official called these people "cheats" and that they were putting out on others to pay their fair share if they didn't.

You can't get more twisted than thinking you have a devine right to others money and that you're cheating society out of your money to be spent on others

Yep!  You should hear the radio commercials here in California supporting Prop 30, the increase in taxes on the already overtaxed top 15% that pay 85% of the state's taxes.  We've got the Governor, Jerry Brown narrating the commercial: ""the plan asks the wealthiest to pay their fair share." ...

I love the wording "asks", as if the wealthiest had a right to refuse, because when the State Government taxes you even more, they're not fucking asking, they're fucking taking!

The first bullet missed, passing over Lennon's head and hitting a window of the Dakota building. Two of the next bullets struck Lennon in the left side of his back, and two more penetrated his left shoulder. Lennon, bleeding profusely from external wounds and also from his mouth, staggered up five steps to the security/reception area, saying, "I'm shot, I'm shot".[27] He then fell to the floor, scattering cassettes that he had been carrying.

Plus, we live in a Socialistic system geared to benefit the powers that be, for shit's sake... Redistribution to the rich, for the rich, by the rich

Which the leftist propaganda machine says is capitalism... and bad... and failing

i don't recall the Brown Shirts getting the girl actually. Do Americans want Socialism? They want the mailman...is it too much to ask? No? Yes? We can't even do that anymore? i mean "i didn't know she died...six years ago" can be a harrowing thought indeed. "still she was a wonderful mummy" is not suppose to be a joke either...even if it makes you laugh. wanting for your electricity to come back on does not make you a Socialist. Asking for the Subway to run PERIOD does not make you a Socialist! Asking "what happened to the money, asshole" does not make you a socialist. I do agree however..."Connecticut got a win this time." It appears to be the only surviving Mass Transit system into Manhattan...although ironically enough the LIRR appears no worse for wear and that thing is as old fashioned as it gets. ah, the Mayor of New York who loves to lord over former railroads. i find it hard to believe that some of that derbis from 9/11 couldn't have been used to create a "protective barrier" of some sort. not even a fire truck? really? hello..."that's why they call them pumping stations"! anywho...the people of New York already know this...not saying anything they don't already know about their City. And who am i? "The guy who hates that place more than anyone" is what i'm told. "the guy who doesn't care about the people down there." yeah, that's me all right. more like Mr. "what's this gonna cost"? at least everyone has free transportation for couple of days. God help us if the New York City subway system is permanently disabled however...

Freedom is a choice, slavery is a choice as well.

Free will is free will.

It is not at all unusual that people would vote to be enslaved.

If Obama wins it's not because of Obama, it's because people want to be enslaved. Obama is a product of America, it's not vice versa.

Crockett I have a question for you. I leave the historical and philosophical aspect to guys like you. So I am throwing this out there to anyone really. Take my situation out here. Not me per say, but NY, NJ etc. If Ron Paul were pres and this storm nailed us.... There would be no FEMA right? Which means that essentially it would be up to individuals to to chip in right? More importantly RP would make it clear that while we should all strive to help our fellow man, building homes on beach front property does not mean that others subsidize your malinvestment right? So it would be a bitter pill for a lot to swallow, but the lesson would actually be learned...is that about right?

Thu, 11/01/2012 - 22:25 | 2939768 CrockettAlmanac.com
CrockettAlmanac.com's picture

Ron Paul would stop the government from blocking recovery with measures such as price controls. If folks need gas and food let those who can provide it charge as much as they can get. Then more trucks will show up and they'll get what they can get but as the supply increases prices will sink back toward normal. Why short circuit the best motivation that merchants and transportation workers have to enter into a difficult and dangerous area -- the profit motive? That's just one example, but so many of the things which government does to supposedly help the little guy actually hurts the little guy.

As James Ostrowski wrote today, "Contrary to what politicians such as Romney, Gary Johnson, Obama and Chris Christie would say, it's during emergencies when you need liberty the most."

So I walk across the street to my local gas station at 6am today (to your point). I did not need gas but wanted a coffee. My guy was the only one left in the neighborhood open. He was tellng me since no one was around "This is bullshit, I am getting overrun here and am going to just shut down". He then made a joke about the price of gas going down when no one had any. So I asked him how much he charges for a cup of water. He said "nothing, take one for free". So I said how much would you charge for that glass if we were standing in the middle of the desert? Crickets. Finally he gets it. He says "well there is nothing I can do, If I hiked the price up huge I would get into trouble". So instead no one got any gas. To your point about dangerous, one driver started threatening him as I was leaving. I heard him yelling  "I don't need this shit". We have another week or two of this ahead of us. I walked past about 50 cars lined up at 6am that were about to realize they were SOL.

Good question. What is capitalism?

No one alive today in the US has ever lived with free-market capitalism. So how could anyone actually know what it is?

On the other hand, all Americans know we live in a free country. Free housing, free food, free education, free health care, free ... Everything, or almost everything, is free if you know how to work the system.

But there's a difference if you live for free in the ghetto or for free at a Central Park address. All depends who you know and how well you "work" that system. Real WELLfare is only for those who live WELL off it.

The problem is that what you refer to as capitalism inexhorably turns into cronyism and then fascism once you factor in the basic human drive to become the chief and to achieve control of everything and everyone around you.

That is the same reason that theoretical socialism never works in reality.

"From each according to their gullibility, to each according to their greed".

Describes both systems equally well.

That's because when they think of capitalism they think of bank bailouts and corruption, which is actually crony-capitalism. I can't think of anybody who isn't for true capitalism where banks/business are actually allowed to fail when insolvent.

This isn't really a surprise considering we have seen the current current system labelled as capitalism fuck things up beyond all repair in our lifetime (spoken as someone under 30).

Considering how pathetic the schools systems the younger generations have had to go through are, it's hard to put all the blame on them when news like this comes out. Anybody with half a brain could see that we don't have a free market capitalistic system when you look at how the corporations have bought out government and make up the rules. When someone hears that this is capitalism for their whole life and then realize their prospect for having a life better than their parents generations when they get out of school, of course they are going to have a negative view of it.

Instead of all the hate towards the younger generation, what about a piece on the complete fucking hypocrisy of the generations that came before us that supposedly have a negative view of socialism while voting over and over for politicians that do nothing but implement socialist policies?

[...] When someone hears that this is capitalism for their whole life and then realize THEY HAVE BEEN LIED TO AND BEEN TAKEN FOR GRANTED BY THE LIARS ILK - they will get pissed and get EVEN. Give it time. Age has got nothing to do with it. Many middle aged men and oldtimers have learned a whole 'nother side to the story that they didn't hear when they put their backs out, played by the rules and got royally fucked over when the music stopped and the elite stole everything in broad daylight.

Don't even engage in this stupid socialism vs. capitalism debate. They steal, we suffer. If they don't share their loot, we take it. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Yes. I find that a lot of my generational cohorts (young-mid 20s), many of whom I would consider fairly intelligent, seem incapable of understanding free market capitalism. All we have ever been taught (formally) is that the government has to be heavily involved in industry; lest we revert to some sort of lawless, wild west-type society wherein the corporations (dirty word) unceasingly take advantage of the citizenry. It is a sad state of affairs.

Yeah, such a poll is based on presumed stereotypes, that are totally BULLSHIT BASED. There has NOT been any "free markets" or "capitalism" for a long, long time, IF EVER ... Similarly, all the other "isms" are deliberate BULLSHIT, perfected by people who do NOT WANT to talk about the social facts. The actual system is PLUTOCRACY. Every other "ism" becomes a foil, or a disguise, or a distraction away from the overwhelming actual domination of the PLUTOCRACY.

The PLUTOCRACY today is way, way worse than any previous plutocracy. By definition, "plutocracy" is supposed to be government by the wealthy. However, the greatest "wealth" that exists today is the power to make money out of nothing. We have a privatized, fiat money-as-debt system, which is the legalized counterfeiting that everyone is forced to accept by the government.

That privatized fiat money-as-debt system is our state religion. That reality overwhelms and subverts all other "isms" to render them ridiculous! Since the vast majority of people were the victims of systematic brainwashing by their schools and mass media, which specialized in lying by omission, the CENTRAL social facts tend not to be known, or deliberately ignored by most people. There is an army of think tanks, run by teachers that are effectively paid to be professional liars and immaculate hypocrites, whose job it is to talk about liberalism, or conservatism, or socialism, or capitalism, in ways that are TOTAL BULLSHIT, because they deliberately ignore the PLUTOCRACY.

Both fascism and socialism end up being used to advance the agenda of the plutocracy. So does libertarianism, and every other "ism" that I am aware of! Especially our current state religion form of plutocracy is ORGANIZED LIES OPERATING ORGANIZED ROBBERY.  I ask the rhetorical question, what happens to "capitalism" or to "socialism" AFTER you add runaway frauds and murders, legalized by governments, to be directed for the benefit of a tiny elite, that has the power to make endless fiat money, out of nothing, that everyone else is forced to pay interest on, then compound interest upon, for the rest of their lives? What happens to any idealistic "ism" AFTER you face the fact that the real world is operated by fraud, backed by force? The real system is due to the triumph of organized crime, covertly controlling governments, and thereby everything else, and thus, relentlessly brainwashing and conditioning the entire population to NOT know the most important things that they should know.

Anyway, therefore, an opinion poll like this only reveals how totally deluded most youths are by their fake education, and the mass media. Indeed, the majority of the comments posted, even on Zero Hedge, continue to reveal that most of the older people still also believe in bullshit "isms." The frequency of understanding the plutocracy problem is way higher amongst Zero Hedge readers than the average population, but not enough to make any real difference to the bigger picture, except to become more aware that we are being fucked, without any practical ways to do anything to stop that.

Youth today inherit the later phases of being born into debt slavery. The younger you are, the more you are being lied to, cheated and robbed by the political system you were born into. Those being born today are actually being born into a debt insanity situation! Youths may intuitively know that, but surely do not understand it. Therefore, it is not a surprise that a stupid opinion poll like this gets stupid responses!

And, the only jobs that they have had are low pay or part time where the tax chunk is maybe around 28 bucks. So they probably think, Yea I'll donate 20$ a week for the foodstamp guys. If they had seen the tax bite out of say a 2500 to 3000 dollar check or ones like we made where the difference of 110 hr weeks and 67 hour weeks was 25 bucks more and the govt stealing all the rest they might have a different view.

You know - the age group that benefits most from "social" programs in this country.

Oh, well. No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the Amerikkkan people, now did one?

I'll take socialism over capitalism, and I'll certainly take it over corporatism - which is basically what we have now.

But then, socialism only helps those that are real humans, not inhumane non-humans such as corporations, or Mitt Romney.

Steve. You must be 18-29 yrs old. There's some schmucks between 30-50 (and that's a lot of people) that have been working for up to 35 years paying in to a lieing, fucked-up system and that have actual life experience. The 18-29 y.o. set is, sadly, clueless for the most part and harmless. Having said that, 4 out of the 5 people that I'm going to hire for a new business are in that age range. But, they are exceptional for their age. Over-educated for what I need them for but energetic and enthusiastic and flexible. Obama better get some gas tankers to New Jersey in a hell of a hurry or he is going to be murdered at the polls!  We all know government is in charge of gas delivery, just like in the old Soviet Union. Man, when I was there in 1982 I could always fill up! Plenty of gas, just NO cars.

Speaking of socialism, would Goldman Sachs shaking down Uncle Sam for billions when AIG failed count? Sachs, they are around today because the socialist government feed their failed business model tens of billions of other people's money. We could say that for many other bastions of capitalism. Remember the Privatize Profits, Socialize Losses policy after the 2008 crash. America has plenty of real socialist policies. I just note that people tend to bash the ones that go to the bottom and ignore the massive hand outs to the elites in the financial sector.
