Hours After Saying Marathon Will Go Ahead, Mayor Bloomberg Cancels It

Tyler Durden's picture

Supposedly this is big news, so we probably have to report it. Just out from the NY Mayor's office:

... and just as the residents of some NY boroughs were eagerly looking forward to the New York version of the hunger games.

At least we know it is not Obama's fault: he just got the mayor's endorsement for promoting climate change.

Full statement:

“The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City’s life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch.  While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division.  The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination.  We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event – even one as meaningful as this – to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track.  The New York Road Runners will have additional information in the days ahead for participants.”

Excellent timing to announce cancellation as it locks-in hotel deposits (2 days) and steals even more... had a funny suspicion it was a money motivated call to hold it in the first place... now we know why they decided to wait till now to come true (halt) but with a way to keep some cash and minimize the City losses.   Disgraceful Bankster Fraudsters!  Sue the City for your deposits and boycott NYM! Shameful really.

Those elites who have time and money to run 26 miles for the fun of it would have had tomatoes, rotten eggs, and worse thrown at them.  Probably a "prudent" decision on the part of King Bloomie.

I was kind of hoping he would announce keeping the race "but all men will be required to run naked in deference to our struggling plebes." and of of course "in the name of leading by example...I...Mayor Conquistador Hermosa Van Jaime De La Bloombergus Maximus Caeser...will fire the starting gun in my birthday suit."

Now Bloomberg has gone too far. Glad I don't live in that crap hole. It used to be a nice place before gentrification by the banksters.

Santa Barbara International Marathon. November 10th. Great alternative. I'm going to be there. Beautiful Southern California coastline 67 degrees and plenty of sunshine.

…Supposedly this is big news, so we probably have to report it.—Tyler Durden

One wonders why “supposedly” would apply to incredibly important news. It’s important because the Obama campaign is suddenly being savaged by the bureaucracy of FEMA and its inability to produce positive stories out of the storm in time for Obama to be reelected.

While New Yorkers were in fear, even of death, and without food and help in the dark and cold, Obama swooped into town and got a photo op and left. And so, along comes the NYC marathon. And it comes into town with huge generators with heat for the runners and the concessions and the NY Post runs a picture of the generators on its front page and it says: Abuse of Power. Why? Because each one of these generatorss could have supplied needed electricity for numerous homes and desperate people.

And immediately, probably not Bloomberg but the Obama campaign, said Call this thing off - if it seems that these runners are trotting comfortably through town while others are starving and freezing to death, the news images of that contrast would be incredible for the office of the president of the nation. By politicizing his command of the relief effort, Obama made this storm his own. It’s Obama’s storm. And, now, another storm is moving in...

So it turns out that Bloomberg, trying to help out Obama and his downtown merchant friends, pulled a boner.

The only thing that’s different from Bloomberg’s initial decision to have the marathon and his decision to cancel it was the tremendous increase in criticism of the lack of relief efforts in light of this dazzling sporting show of let the people eat cake.

And if that ain’t big news, what R big news?

Bloomberg wanted to wait until all the out-of-state and international runners had already been inconvenienced and spent money on hotels and travel.  I imagine many already arrived in the City.  So, he pissed off the storm victims by initially choosing athletes and media over them, and then he pissed off the athletes.

In the mean time, I wonder if those generators would have saved Belleview from evacuation yesterday?

Bloomberg stupidity is limitless :

Yet...

Bloomberg just said in a press conference minutes ago they didn't need the National Guard because they are capable of taking care of their own.

I recall hearing stories of men serving in World War II who passionately disliked the Red Cross – because of the doughnuts. Even men returning from the front lines were charged by the Red Cross for their doughnuts and coffee. Hard to swallow, isn’t it?

In many areas of the U.S. today the Red Cross has a bad reputation because its paid staff – one or two - will arrive at a disaster but volunteers are required to take care of the relief effort.

Tens of thousands are dying slow, horrible, heartbreaking deaths because of actions tied to the Red Cross.

"While President Clinton was still governor, inmates would regularly cross the prison hospital's threshold to give blood, lured by the prospect of receiving $7 a pint. The ritual was creepy to behold: platoons of prisoners lying supine on rows of cots, waiting for the needle-wielding prison orderly to puncture a vein and watch the clear bags fill with blood. Administrators then sold the blood to brokers, who in turn shipped it to other states, and to Japan, Italy, Spain and Canada. Despite repeated warnings from the Food and Drug Administration, Arkansas kept its prison plasma program running until 1994, when it became the very last state to cease selling its prisoners' plasma. In a year when Arkansas scandals dating back to his governorship have returned to haunt Clinton..."

Good move, Bloomberg. And good timing too. Shortly after markets closed on a Friday afternoon.. No, I'm not suggesting it was timed that way. But was it?

Now what are we going to do next Tuesday? Is it worth it? Potentially not allowing many NE voters to have their say might bring about a constitutional challenge.

People standing in line for basic necessities such as gas. Can you see them standing in line to give their vote in a make-shift voting center as opposed to scouring the remains of their homes, cleaning up, rebuilding, restocking and so on and so forth.

Elections in the US have been contested for much less in past years. This is a case of potential irregular voting and could have a chance to be contested for months after. Both teams know the circumstances and potential headaches.

They might not cancel the election altogether but they could delay calling the outcome pending voting access and ability in the NE.

The runners can still enjoy all that NY has to offer! NY is always worth the trip. People died in the disaster. Many lossed everything.

So bu-fucking-hu to all those who travelled to NY and spent some money.

They could have "prepared" and chosen NOT to travel to a city that was struck by the biggest natural disaster in a century.

Hindsight is 20/20. Applies to those standing in line for gas to fuel their generators as well as those who wanted to run through a city in shambles.
