Gasoline Rationing Comes To New York
From the mayor who made owning an 18oz+ container of coke a summary offense, comes this:
Effective 6 am 11/9: drivers in NYC whose license plates end in an even number or zero will be able to buy gas only on even-numbered days
— Mike Bloomberg (@MikeBloomberg) November 8, 2012
Drivers in NYC whose license plates end with a letter will be classified as “odd” and may only buy gas on odd-numbered days
— Mike Bloomberg (@MikeBloomberg) November 8, 2012
In case anyone gets any ideas, the NYPD will be there to enforce counting skills:
NYPD officers will be deployed at gas stations, but we expect that NYers will respect the rule and work together to ensure compliance
— Mike Bloomberg (@MikeBloomberg) November 8, 2012
Finally, so solly, but no tickee, no gasee
This is not a step we take lightly. But given gas shortages and the growing frustrations of NYers, we believe it’s the right step.

it took Lord Farquaad this long to figure out that cutting out half the eligible cars on any given day makes a HUGE difference??? gov. christie implemented this last week in nj and it was hugely successful. lines became immediately more manageable. christie has handled the storm fallout like a well trained general.....................bloomberg has been handling it like the little clueless leader that he is........................perhaps we can convert all of the cars in nyc to run on high fructose corn syrup.............that would make bloomberg happy.............
Hey man would you deny the man his daily $500 haircuts and dom perignon high colonics? It ain't easy being classy. You can wait a week for your fuckin gas!
id say that ny/nj had a bit of a shitstorm the past week, but thats nothing compared to the shit storms that are created when imbeciles, such as yourself, open their mouths and start spewing the feces...........youre a jackass........and clearly somebody who has no comprehension of how to successfully manage a chaotic situation....................
Well I guess we found out who has an odd numbered plate. :)
take a walk rookie........................
We'll see who's walking. Don't forget your gas cans.
no need rookie, a little competent leadership quickly fixed the gas issue here in nj............................
you live near water ANYWHERE(or on top of a huge fault line) and expect Mother Nature not to kick your ass occasionaly-naivete at its finest. don't fear uncle Sam will bail you out
otto, im NOT talking about federal responses to disasters........im talking about actions on a state/local level to provide order in an efficient and competent manner.................
That response is a function of the electorate at the State & Local level. NJ could have Corzined itself (again) and saved everyone from the MF Global experience. NYers violated the 12th commandment, and now the Joooo God is punishing them for their sin.
Maybe you should get some fresh air or something?
I started to rag on you up above for the fun of it, but alas, I'm not soulless.
I'll merely note, that just like after Katrina, government has done everything in its power to prevent ordinary people from helping, creating the very scarcity that they pretend they can manage.
Sure, they may have reduced daily demand by half, but not before decreasing supply by a much greater factor. Without the bureaucrats' miles and miles of red-tape, free people would've had a convoy of tankers reaching to NYC from Cushing, OK by now.
NA...you are right, but the problem lies with the federal govt bungling the situation along with incompetent local leadership....................its completely naive to say, on a state or local level, that there should be no action taken by a governor/mayor to solve issues when its not cost prohibitive.......we are talking about smart organizational skills that bloomberg has demonstrated not to have in a time of crisis...............bloombergs recent ban on cars entering the city without at least 3 people was foolish and shortsighted..............people just packed onto buses and trains, which were already overloaded..................
Gov Christie did this in new Jersey on Monday ....no more lines and no more rationing ...the man should be President
Never trust a man that can be bribed by a Twinkie
making fun of how people look not on what they do is so progressive. vote "D" do ya?
In New Joisey that would be two Twinkies. We have our pride after all.
We are about to see tags stolen!
Black mkt. Tags?
Magic crayon tags?
And while the cops are busy at the gas pumps.......where are the real criminals?
Sip on your little soda and mull that Bloomie.
The real criminals will be looking for something -- anything at all -- worth stealing.
...where are the real criminals?
Sipping overpriced coffee in well-furnished offices high above Wall St?
I dunno, I give up, tell us!
WINNING !
What will happen if I press Follow?
That's why you need to sets of plates... and two cars.
There goes the neighborhood, ODD numberd poeple are smelly and don't take showers.
There's not gallons limit so that Hummer and large SUV can tank up by Prius is limited to 2 gallons a week.
Today in the gas line the cops chased off a guy who had pumped over $200 of gas into containers in his van.
"hey! Other people needs some too" the cop said.
I can't believe I am actually watching the Fall of a Roman Empire
Live !! To Boot....
No Spartacus needed.
Aah, those smart and cunning political leaders. If I lived in NY and had an even number plate, I would NEVER think about buying twice the gaz I need on even-numbered days to compensate for what I can't buy the day after... NEVAH.

What if they have a vanity plate without a number on the end or none at all?
You mean a letter? Says so above...
Its odd...
Which of course it is...
Its a license plate NUMBER..
Ha! How'd I miss that one?!
Sick kid today. Takes me 10 minutes to watch a 3 minute news clip. Took me 15 to get thru this article.
Oh, the joys of being a sole parent.
I need my James Bond car
This is NOT rationing!!
This is to reduce lines at the pump not a limit on fuel. You may buy 1000 gallons, there is no ration.
Just wait.
From 1 dollar gas to travel pass. Times are changing.
So you drive into the city as a tourist for an event - are you stuck and have to stay overnight if you have the wrong plate? By the way - a lot of NY people buy out of state plates to save money...
I suspect you could work around it if you had to. It requires a bit of common sense, though.
Mess up your hair, have someone splash some muddy slush on you, and go to a station with a gas-can. Tell 'em your car stalled out a half-mile away and you only need 5 gallons.
For sure there are plenty of NYC tourists who'd never be able to come up with such a cunning plan, though.
This is the same "bright" idea our beloved government in SFR Yugoslavija had in beginning of the 80's. Gas purchases limited to certain amount and the odd-even system and the friendly policeman on more frequented gas stations.
In our case it was necessary because even long after the "Iranian crisis" no one wanted to sell us gas for our increasingly worthless Yugoslav dinar, so the Iranian crisis for us lasted well into the 80's.
Worked like a charm.....
Obama hates black people.
Correction, it seems he hates all people. EOH
As per Mathematica:
Even number:
An even number is an integer of the form n=2k, where k is an integer.
Integer:
One of the numbers ...,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, .... The set of integers forms a ring that is denoted Z. A given integer n may be negative, nonnegative, zero (n=0), or positive.
So it is redundant to say "...even number or zero". It would suffice to say "...even number".
There are probably not 1,000 people in the entire state of NY that could tell you with any confidence that zero is a number, least of all an even number.
And as for cars with vanity plates I think those fuckers should get no gas at all on any day, just because they are so vain.
Gotta call you out on that....
There are at least 1000 people in NY that have a Ph.D. in mathematics...
But otherwise your comment on vanity plates is bang on....
Heh heh heh ...
I had vanity plates in the 70's and got gas on either day.
Just make sure your vanity plate does not end in a number!
Bloomberg is completely out of touch with reality. My father lost power, phone, heat and gas 9-days ago and there Con Ed has told him he probably has another 4-weeks to go without power. In the interim, he cannot get gas to drive to get food because (a) there is no gas and/or (b) the gas stations have to electric to pump out gas. So this is Bloomberg's brilliant leadership to help the masses? Why the f*ck isn't the national guard there after 9-days of this to make gas available to this disaster zone? My father is one of tens of thousands in this same situation.
I have been visiting to help where I can and I can tell you its a war zone in these flood areas. The police force is understaffed and overworked and there is looting everywhere. People are having a VERY tough time doing anything. You can't drink the (cold, as there is no heat) water owing to the sewage back-up. Good job on rationing what little gas is available Mr. billionaire who has no clue what the ordinary disaster stricken person faces in real life.
"Why the f*ck isn't the national guard there after 9-days of this to make gas available to this disaster zone?"
Probably cuz the National Guard has been over-stretched for years thanks to endless wars. I'm sure there's more than a few chicken-hawks stranded without power wondering the same thing right now.
Now your dad only has to worry about not being able to get gas every other day.
Sorry that was in poor taste. My regards to the family, and luck with the weather.
I have a rich brother-in-law who lives on Long Island somewhere. My wife calls him up after the disaster, those people are in a state of shock. How could this have happened to wealthy, upscale Americans who always voted their wallets?!?
Dammit, that was probably in poor taste as well.
I'll go now. There is nothing funny about any of this.
So this is Bloomberg's brilliant leadership to help the masses?
No, this isn't about helping the folks without power--this is about controlling the chaos at the gas-stations which ARE operating.
Also, there has been some gas distribution by the Guardsmen, but it was limited and (as far as I know) only the first 2 days after the storm. ANYONE who has somewhere warm and lit to visit should take advantage of that option.
This was a cataclysmic natural disaster. For some perspective, consider how long it took to restore everything in New Orleans after Katrina.
Fuck all you guys need there now is an Earthquake....
Now you're just giving Nature ideas.
They need butterflies! Hear that? And gorgeous sunsets! And some warm days with a gentle breeze wouldn't hurt anyone! Come on Nature, you must have some love in there somewhere. Give us some of that sugar! Come on baby you know who loves you.
It's 1973 all over again!
But the markets will never retest their March 2009 lows again, never I tell you!
Are people still standing in line with gas cans, or is it back to just cars now? How do you split the walk-ins?
And will they really have NYPD at all the gas stations? (Note to self: good time to rob a bank in NYC...be sure to use Prius as get away car).
Its pretty random which stations take walk up cans and which don't. If they do take walk ups then they have a dedicated pump and a designated line for it.
Any open station that I've seen has two cops on it. They seem to be from local precincts.
I actually collect license plates...maybe I'll drive to the gas station tomorrow with an odd-numbered Northwest Territories or American Samoa plate on the car, just for shits and giggles...
LOL!
Does rationing apply to daddy Bloomberg's helicopter?? I didn't think so!!!
Not one fucking mention that leading into the Sandy shitshow that gasoline stocks in the North East were at historic lows....
Hint: All that gasoline that use to come from Europe is now history that 2 mmbpd of refining capacity is shut down there....
Shows what you know. Gasoline comes abiotically from the center of the Earth. They scoop it up in buckets in some places, but they won't let that get out. Ever hear of Area 51? Anything about refineries and crude oil shortages and the like is an Illuminaty-inspired mind-fuck to keep people dependent on a corrupt One-World system. And they use mind control too. And Chem-trails.
How'd I do? Miss anything?
Shit I didn't mention the chip implants. Okay wait look at that yes I did. Damned NaF making me forgetful.
You forgot HAARP, you know, the way the Sandy was created in the first place to insure the Kenyan got re-elected....
The hell you say? Guess I'm way behind.
If you got gasoline from Europe, you wouldn't depend on refineries in the East. It's probably crude you're thinking about and yes, that is a problem if there is a loss of refining capacity.
You might be on to something there. They are having a hard time getting fuel into the infrastructure in NY and NJ. We're not talking a few days of disruption, we're talking weeks or months here.
That is a Black Swan event. When 10% of the US population which represents probably 30% of the spending is cut off, shut down, out of service. My percentages may be off or whatever, but it is a huge deal regardless.
Where do airports get their jetfuel from? The main terminal is in NY if I'm not mistaken.
The East Coast refinaries represent a small fraction of demand (and always have).... Their current state has not helped things...
The JIT delivery of petro-products is teetering from fundmental shifts in demand and the "demographics" of the refinining capacity.. i.e. old requiring Light Sweet in Europe vs. new capable of refining heavy sour in Asia...
Price controls to follow, plus lots of lines, lines and more lines, waiting in line for a line, lines for everything,
And then................."line them up over there" ** the last line ** ;(
If you are dependent on people who do not know you, who control the value of your necessities, you are not free, and you are not safe!
Wendell Berry,
The art of the commonplace
Theres more to this story, The Long Island counites are mimicking Bloomy with this odd-even shit, when just a day or so ago we were assured that the supply issues here were under control and we'd be back to normal within a week, Bloomy is probably diverting some our supply to the city, fuckin midget
hmmm so there was an election on Tuesday and Thursday Bloomy announces this shit
evil bastard
Just keeps getting better. Rationing just goes to show collapse is around the corner. next it will be food rationing. I'm hearing online of looting not reported by mainstream media. Watch out. NY is grand for looting at the BEST of times
mine ends in 0
Snake bit!
Presumably these restrictions only apply to conveyances driven by the proles - and not to First Secetary Bloomberger's ZIL Limo.
Don't be cynical. We have the rule of law here.
They use one of the odd numbered Zils on odd days and an even numbered Zil on even days.
Hybrid Bitchez....oh Yeah! AND NOT LIVING IN NYC.
Fuck your hybrid. My 4.2L V8 Jag does 30 mpg at 80 mph. It has an odd plate so I fill it up here in NJ every odd day. On the even days I drive my Cadillac SUV, with it's even plate. That's a bit heavier, so it'll crush your little Prius like a bug while pulling to a stop at the pump.
Some of today's stories from the gas lines in Brooklyn:
1. Guys are selling 5 gallon cans of gas, delivered to your door for...... $80!
2. Last night my wife overheard the grocery store manager saying to his co-worker that he couldnt get the store's milk delivery to arrive. He couldn't figure out why.
3. Bread prices running up around $5 a loaf.
I did my line time today and am sitting around 60% full.
Welcome to the new normal.
Fun fun fun.
The food bit is more worrisome than gas.
Just the beginning BitcheZ! Forward!!
Did he get this idea from Mr. Monk?
I still don't get it. Today is Thursday. Is that odd or even?
Why of course, we're celebrating Carter's second (or is that third?) term!
I don't understand what this odd/even rule is supposed to accomplish.
Normally on any given day you would have both the odd and even guys who need fillups in line.
With the new rule, on an odd day you would not have any even guys in line, but you would have the odd guys who would normally have filled up that day plus the odd guys who would normally have filled up the previous day, but weren't allowed to. So the number in line should be the same as it would have been without the rule.
This useless rule does nothing more than prove that Bloomberg is an idiot (if you weren't already convinced of it).
That's the way it worked in the seventies too. If it was your day you got gas whether you needed it or not because you might have to make a long drive the next day.
Is Mayor Bloomberg or Senator Schumer planning any photo ops at the gas stations. Just wondering.
http://tradewithdave.com/?p=13213
Do people even know what odd and even numbers are??
FUCK YOU, BLOOMBERG, YOU SHAMELESS FASCIST.
And for everybody who is accepting to continue living under such fascism, suck it up (read: fuck you, too); your acceptance is enabling.
Got diesel?
Tuesday morning on my way to work in Lower Manhattan -from only the 2nd night being home out of the last 7 - I passed my local gas station. The Shell station was out of gas, vacant and cordoned off with police tape.
I see my regular pump is accessable through the maze of tape and I notice a tiny 3"x4" sign on my pump ( appropiate because its the smallest gas station in Manhattan and perhaps all of NY state ) the sign read "only diesel"
I pulled up and filled the tank in my diesel VW - good for another two weeks at least. As soon as I put the nozzle in my tank the station was swarmed with cars looking for gas and cops asking questions - "are you getting gas" said the cop, "no" I said, "then what the fuck is that hose in your tank?" asked the cop. "diesel" I said.....funny moment in the police state but my fear is there will be other not so funny episodes to follow.
Now this is so familiar. I come from Slovenia - ex Yugoslavia.
We had this kind of restrictions in the mid 70's or 80's.....I was young but I remember it a little.
Seems that you are learining from Yugoslavia now. Please check what happened in Yougoslavia when we started printing money.
http://www.rogershermansociety.org/yugoslavia.htm
We had a bill with 500 000 000 000 - welcome to the club
I wonder how soon this will roll out to the entire country...This is just a test.
Looks like the current test guinea pigs aren't coping well.
I loved the "cut out 10,000 tractor trailers per day" comment up above. LOL!
Yeah just send in the supplies on one of Uncle Warren's trains. Levitate the goods from the rail yard to the store shelves. LOfuckingL.
what if I have two cars??
this is funny: replacing one inconvenience with another. and what is it supposed to do, fix supply and logistics problem or what? USA is now officially communist.
does this apply to futures as well?
