Samsung S3 Overtakes iPhone As World's Best-Selling Smartphone

Tyler Durden's picture

Look up the phrase "inflection point" - it will be the most hated phrase by all those who day after day repeat that there is now way AAPL can ever drop because its "forward multiple is low" (hint: forward multiples are simply functions of forward earnings, and once the fadness and coolness of a memo, no matter how infectious in the past, is gone, so are "forward earnings', especially once the sellside behavioral finance lemmings crew takes the machete to their Price Targets and has to justify why it has been massively wrong... and also for those who have a calculator, calculate how many years of dividends $100 billion in cash funds before the cash hoard also runs out).

From Reuters:

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S3 became the world's best-selling smartphone model last quarter, pushing aside Apple Inc's iPhone, which has dominated the chart for more than two years, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Thursday.

Strategy Analytics estimated Samsung sold 18 million S3 models in the third quarter, compared with iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 million.

Strong sales of the flagship Galaxy S3 - which comes with a large 4.8 inch touchscreen - helped Samsung post a record $7.3 billion operating profit in the July-September quarter.

"Samsung's Galaxy S3 has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia," said analyst Neil Mawston, adding the new iPhone 5 would likely reclaim the top spot for Apple in the current quarter.

We realize that this unpleasant datapoint means adding insult to AAPL permabull injury. So be it.

He didn't give a reason, he posed a question. A valid one.

If we only surround ourselves with people who agree with us, how do we grow? How do we learn? How do we better ourselves? That only leads to confirmation bias...and that's not healthy.

Many here are fond of slamming what they deem "Apple Fan-boys". But can you not see the same happening with regard to ZH? Could not a reasonable person looking from the outside in here also say that this place is populated with "ZH Fan-boys"?

As Woody Allen once paraphrased : "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me as a member."

The passion and vitriol with which my criticism is being attacked is, in a sense, confirmation of some aspects of my criticism. I don't need anyone else to see that....my seeing it is sufficient for me.

This doesnt make sense..Yahoo Finance just told me Apple was down because of some nonsense about "Taxes". Good thing there is no burgeoning competition for iPad and certainly nothing can happen to those insane profit margins they have been enjoying for the past decade that no other competitor gets a premium on for their products.

Maybe they need to launch an iPad Jumbo that is a 30 inch tablet that takes two people to operate...who wouldn't buy that solely to play Chopsticks "Big" style...The moment I saw them using celebs to pimp their product I knew the end was only a few years away. Their only hope is an Apple LCD which they should have launched earlier this year..They blew it.

I actually could see the rational case for certain computer users to go with a Mac back when Windows was a bloody mess and Apple's OS was clean, easy, intuitive and there were Apple specific programs that were far better for particular users (e.g. photographers, graphic designers).

That's just not the case anymore. Apple uses Intel processors, its OS has no clear advantages (new Apple operating systems have some deep flaws, actually), and as mentioned earlier, the coolness factor is melting away.

Android on phones and tablets is relatively user friendly, and as mentioned, there are so many apps with such an easy interchange of accessing and sharing apps that Apple really offers no real benefit on mobile devices.

It's hard to justify the price premium that really only can be had when the product is superior and/or "kewl" when neither's no longer the case.

Who cares.  Android is the new Windows and products built around it just as in the Windows world are fragmented and not necessarily better (think HP).  Plus support time periods suck for Android not only because of the 6 month product cycle of the manufacturers....but the shitty support and update cycles of the Wireless Carriers.

The Samsung S III will be end of life (EOL) in 6 months....and the next Apple Killer will come on line.....just to die in another 6 months.

Just for clarification....I am not an Apple Fanboi.....I do not own ANY Apple products and I personally own and use an Android based HTC Sensation 4G.  Just speaking from experience.

Samsung sub-contract the software and do the hardware

Microshite do the software and sell into hardware manufacturers ...as does GOOfy (without a price tag!)

over time Apple has shown despite not having the fastest chips it's the fast and smooth running, uber-reliable, envelope piercing software that is the 'killer Ap' in the marketplace

...pretty sure that's going to continue and the also-rans will continue to copy-cat, not overtake ..we'll see

I've posted this before, but developing for Apple products is a big pain in the ass.

I'll take Android any day, which allows you to start coding without an annual fee, and you don't have to leap through multiple signed certificates just to push an application to the device.

On Android, I code, compile, and push to the device. If I want to share my creation, I can email the .apk or share it through other services with no hassle.

On iPhone, you have to sign your app multiple times for various reasons with different certs, have a current account ($99/year - and when it expires you're toast), pray that after submitting it to iTunes connect they allow you the gracious mercy of being able to distribute it, etc..

No thanks... I'm not the only one tired of Apple from the development side, I can tell you.

can't wait for GOOfy to offer 'free' Ad Revenue too, they're already discounting it so not long to go

There's too much stupidity here to be believed.

AAPL PE ratio is reasonable, probably too low if anything.

iPhone has more apps and a better display and native apps. S3 has a dim display with whack color gamut (i.e. ghastly color saturation) and the Dalvik VM with non-smooth animation.

My best friends prefer iPhones. The Android developers I know prefer iPhones. As far as I can tell, Androids are more popular because they are preferred by losers (generally those who are unemployed or living with a parent).

"November Headline: Objective-C on its way to become "language of the year" again " - http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

"Other mobile phone application languages such as C, C++ and Java are not rising fast enough to compete seriously with Objective-C. Another possible competitor for the award, C#, shows a strong dip this year "

Why is Apple's language "language of the year"? Why not Android?

Maybe developers are fleeing away from commodity Android phones (free OS, i.e. you get what you pay for) and running toward where the money is - the platform of choice, i.e. Apple.

Android is an Operating System....... NOT a language.

Android applications are usually written in Java which is #1 for 2011 and #2 in 2012 in that link you quote. Objective-C is #3.

To do a fair comparison, you need to subtract out the non-Android Java uses (the vast majority, since Java has been around for years).

Clearly, you missed the point. Objective-C has exploded out of nowhere and is rising sharply.
