Kerry, John Kerry: Defense Secretary

Tyler Durden's picture

Just when the newsflow surrounding America's military-industrial complex couldn't get any more surreal, and on Veterans day on top of everything, here comes the WaPo with news that virtually assures all defense companies should open limit up tomorrow: "President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus." That's right: John "Swiftboat" Kerry, the same John Kerry who accused Vietnam vets of committing war crimes; the same John Kerry of the whole military service controversy.

More "Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations." As to Petraeus, who may or may not testify over the Benghazi affair, but apparently is excused due to his familial infidelities, and whose sexual dalliances were (not) ironically captured best by The Onion, his replacement is also becoming clear: "John O. Brennan, Obama’s chief counterterrorism adviser, is a leading contender for the CIA job if he wants it, officials said. If Brennan goes ahead with his plan to leave government, Michael J. Morell, the agency’s acting director, is the prohibitive favorite to take over permanently. Officials cautioned that the White House discussions are still in the early phases and that no decisions have been made."

WaPo continues:

Rice, one of an inner circle of aides who have been with Obama since his first presidential campaign in 2007, is under particular fire over the Benghazi incident, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Some Republican lawmakers have suggested that she was part of what they suspect was an initial, election-related attempt to portray the attack as a peaceful demonstration that turned violent, rather than what the administration now acknowledges was an organized terrorist assault.

Rice’s description, days after the attack, of a protest gone wrong was either intentionally misleading or incompetent, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday. Rice, he said, “would have an incredibly difficult time” winning Senate confirmation as secretary of state.

But several White House officials said Obama is prepared to dig in his heels over her nomination to replace outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Rice’s post-Benghazi remarks on several television news shows were merely a recitation of administration talking points drawn directly from intelligence available at the time, said the senior administration officials, who agreed to discuss the closely held transition planning only on the condition of anonymity.

While the "cons" of Kerry in charge of US defense are quite obvious to everyone, the "pros" is undeniable: Kerry will soon be given the chance to talk any and all US enemies, foreign and domestic, if not to death then certainly to near comatose state.

Well, if Kerrry declines the nomination, there's always that other heavily decorated veteran, Al Gore.

Kerry is a shill for corporatists, and he is a college boy brat who believes everything he was told, and he has had NO experience of the world beyond his own arse....and the money of his wives. Mossad knows that he is an 'educated fool' and 'useful idiot'.

It may be amusing for some ZHers to mock Kerry or support him.

Divide and conquer. Useful for your foes.

And he didn't "accuse" Americans of War Crimes in Vietnam, he simply pointed out the obvious truth about them.

Of course they continue today.'s picture

He relayed the veterans' own stories at their request. And yes, the atrocities continue as does the desire of the troops to tell their fellow citizens the truth about war.

Winter Soldier

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan featured testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.

You can say what you like about Kerry, but he served honorably.  I doubt if 80% of the American yahoos on ZH have ever served their country in any capacity.

Clashfan's picture

I doubt that 80 percent of Americans worked to hide the truth about missing MIAs, too, or fit into stories like this in odd ways:

And Kerry chose this fellow to introduce him at the convention (to accept the nomination in 04), a "swift boat" comrade--whatever.

From the piece:

A lawyer who served in the Clinton administration and more recently was an adviser to California's lieutenant governor pleaded guilty to a child porn charge in a San Diego federal court Monday.

Wade Rowland Sanders admitted to having 600 images of minors on his computer, including a video depicting "several prepubescent females engaged in sexual conduct with an adult male and performing oral sex on one another," according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Karen Hewitt.

Great sarcasm!!!

Progressive? Not unless the word has a new definition.

A one-party political system in which 99% vote for more of the same---no matter which clown won----nothing scary at all about it.

Just a lot hot air on the web and at ZH from the troll/zombies of the u. s.

I used to think that there would be a change in y country, but there is no chance of this now.

Only two million voted for 'other' and probably 80% of those were just children with no idea of  anything. I hope I am wrong about all of this and just an angry oldman, but it feels more like the most profound sadness of y life.

Good luck to you and keep up the good cheer      om

Can't let Kerry pass by without slipping one of my knives through his ribs...metaphorically ;-)

"As a member of the Senate Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Health, Kerry played a key role in shaping President Obama's healthcare reform legislation in 2009 — while also raking in cash from healthcare investments.

Here's how he did it, according to Schweizer:

  • As passage Obamacare seemed more likely, Kerry bought nearly $750,000 in Teva Pharmaceuticals stock, one of several big drug companies that benefitted from the health care bill. When the bill was signed in 2010, the Kerrys sold some of their Teva shares, making tens of thousands of dollars in capital gains. They kept more than $1 million worth of Teva stock.
  • In 2009, the Kerrys also picked up shares in ResMed, a medical device manufacturer that was a big winner in the healthcare reform battle. In early versions of the bill, medical device companies would have been subject to higher taxes. Kerry opposed the taxes, and the fees were much lower in the final version. ResMed's stock rose 71% when the bill was passed.
  • The Kerrys also invested in hospital supplier Thermo Fisher Scientific, a major beneficiary of the healthcare bill. The stock jumped 40% after Obamacare passed.
  • At the same time, the Kerrys dumped all of their investments in the health insurance industry, including shares in United Health and Wellpoint. Needlesstosay, healthcare providers were the biggest losers in Obamacare.

Schweizer notes that Kerry has been cashing in on inside information about the healthcare industry since long before Obamacare:
