Kerry, John Kerry: Defense Secretary

Tyler Durden's picture

Just when the newsflow surrounding America's military-industrial complex couldn't get any more surreal, and on Veterans day on top of everything, here comes the WaPo with news that virtually assures all defense companies should open limit up tomorrow: "President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus." That's right: John "Swiftboat" Kerry, the same John Kerry who accused Vietnam vets of committing war crimes; the same John Kerry of the whole military service controversy.

More "Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations." As to Petraeus, who may or may not testify over the Benghazi affair, but apparently is excused due to his familial infidelities, and whose sexual dalliances were (not) ironically captured best by The Onion, his replacement is also becoming clear: "John O. Brennan, Obama’s chief counterterrorism adviser, is a leading contender for the CIA job if he wants it, officials said. If Brennan goes ahead with his plan to leave government, Michael J. Morell, the agency’s acting director, is the prohibitive favorite to take over permanently. Officials cautioned that the White House discussions are still in the early phases and that no decisions have been made."

WaPo continues:

Rice, one of an inner circle of aides who have been with Obama since his first presidential campaign in 2007, is under particular fire over the Benghazi incident, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Some Republican lawmakers have suggested that she was part of what they suspect was an initial, election-related attempt to portray the attack as a peaceful demonstration that turned violent, rather than what the administration now acknowledges was an organized terrorist assault.

Rice’s description, days after the attack, of a protest gone wrong was either intentionally misleading or incompetent, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday. Rice, he said, “would have an incredibly difficult time” winning Senate confirmation as secretary of state.

But several White House officials said Obama is prepared to dig in his heels over her nomination to replace outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Rice’s post-Benghazi remarks on several television news shows were merely a recitation of administration talking points drawn directly from intelligence available at the time, said the senior administration officials, who agreed to discuss the closely held transition planning only on the condition of anonymity.

While the "cons" of Kerry in charge of US defense are quite obvious to everyone, the "pros" is undeniable: Kerry will soon be given the chance to talk any and all US enemies, foreign and domestic, if not to death then certainly to near comatose state.

Holy shit, this is good news

TPTB almost seem like they are trying to do themselves in. I cross paths with a good amount of Iraq/Afghanistan vets who feel like something is wrong with our nation. They are tired of being pawns for a purpose that only benefits the poli class. They were brainwashed from a young age that Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. War has made them realize that they are the aggressors.

John Kerry is as status quo as they come, so he will welcome more bloodshed. We all know that the military is one day going to be turned on us, so when that horse faced fuck John Kerry is the one making that call he will be laughed at.

This will wake up more grunts, which is a good thing.

Your recollection is wrong. Kerry's testimony relayed to congress the self reported experience of veterans who gathered at the Winter Soldier conference. The atrocities which he reported were confessed to by the veterans themselves. They wanted to come clean and tell the world what was really happening in SE Asia. That is what made his testimony so powerful.

I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command....

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

We call this investigation the "Winter Soldier Investigation." The term "Winter Soldier" is a play on words of Thomas Paine in 1776 when he spoke of the Sunshine Patriot and summertime soldiers who deserted at Valley Forge because the going was rough.

We who have come here to Washington have come here because we f eel we have to be winter soldiers now. We could come back to this country; we could be quiet; we could hold our silence; we could not tell what went on in Vietnam, but we feel because of what threatens this country, the fact that the crimes threaten it, not reds, and not redcoats but the crimes which we are committing that threaten it, that we have to speak out.

James Rassmann (born ~1948) is a former Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department lieutenant who served with the U.S. Army's 5th Special Forces Group in the Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969.[1] Now a resident of the U.S. state of Oregon, he has credited U.S. Senator John Kerry with having rescued him from the Bay Hap River on March 13, 1969.[1]

Rassman recommended Kerry for a Silver Star medal, but the two did not maintain a relationship for the following 30 years. Rassman gained national prominence during the 2004 Presidential election when he publicly denounced the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's campaign against Kerry.

Both the post and the comments seem to aasume there is something wrong with Kerry as Secty of Defense.  I'd like to know what that is or is not.  I don't have an opinion, but the only two issues cited in the post tell me nothing useful.  The post claims:

1.  As a young man with a Silver Star, he spoke truth to power by testifying against the sons of bitches who were in favor of sending 54,000 of my generation to an early grave for absolutely no fucking reason at all.

2.  He was the subject of a "military service controversy" much like Bush and the National Guard.

Is that all there is?  Am I missing something here?

The really damning things I recall...

1) he threw someone else's 'Nam medals away at a protest -- that makes him a liar

2) he pretended to puff on a joint when he was singing with his lowlife hippie friends -- that makes him a druggie

3) he just stood there and watched some college frat-boy get tased for trying to ask a leading question at one of his speeches -- that makes him a lazy bastard who hates the Constitution and doesn't support free speech

4) he received a Purple Heart in 'Nam for a really minor injury -- that makes him some kind of pussy who tried to sleaze out of fighting

Did I miss anything important?

Fritz Kohn/Fred Kerry (Grandfather)

Fritz and Otto excelled in their studies in Vienna. However, like other Jews, they suffered greatly from the anti-Semitism that prevailed in Europe at this time. As a result, both Kohn brothers abandoned their Jewish heritage and converted to Roman Catholicism.

In addition, in 1897, Otto decided to shed the Jewish-sounding name of Kohn. He chose a new name by dropping a pencil on a map. The pencil landed on Ireland's County Kerry. In 1901, Fritz followed his brother’s example and officially changed his name to Frederick Kerry

On June 6, 1971, John Kerry described the work of the Swift boats to the Washington Star as follows:

"We discovered we were butchering a lot of innocent people, and morale became so low among the officers on those 'swift boats' that we were called back to Saigon for special instructions from Gen. Abrams."

So the next SoD will be someone who admits firing into into villages and "butchering a lot of innocent people". But he regretted it afterwards. Kind of like "I voted against the bill after I voted for it."

Can't think of a better choice.

Why highlight the one honorable thing the man did as a disqualification?

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Yep,and the same one who claimed to have two/three Purple hearts?, one was a splinter, and his OWN men came out in public and called him a LIAR.

Doesn't get any  worse than that.

I believe the story was this:  That he wrote himself up for all three purple hearts, as the only officer present, and that none of the three required medivac for treatment.  But he KNEW that three purple hearts gets you a ticket home from Vietnam...after his long three-month tour.  And when he decided he was on the wrong side of politics, that nobody wanted another PT 109 type with his initials, he decided, having himself finished off a wounded vietcong by the riverside who had no weapon in his hands (so they say)...(and rather than take him prisoner) that he would become anti-war and thus popular:  And he chose as his theme for the largest demonstration "Dewey Canyon II/Lam Son 719 II."  Since I served throughout Lam Son 719 (the Laos incursion), I take umbrage.  It was the dems war, Johnson's war.  The revisionist prat about Kennedy "intending to reduce our involvement after the next election" is pure puff.  I can understand that Kerry wanted one day to be like the actual rich boys at Andover, his old school.  That's a natural scar.

Spare us. The man wants to lead the War Department when he was once anti-war as young man. The man only has power in his eyes.

In fact, I hope it happens as a final insult to the anti-war left from the 1960s and 70s. How's it feel? Anyone from the Boston area who voted for this clown on his anti-war stance?

What's even better is that the one thing that could have made him president (saying he'd bring troops home immediately from Iraq), he could never say during his 2004 presidential campaign.

Kerry was opposed to the atrocities he himself was compelled to commit in a war which the US started over false allegations of a North Vietnamese attack on US vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin. Speaking out was the right thing to do.

Speaking out was the right thing to do. So is taking a principled anti-war stance. What happened to that John Kerry? Because that guy didn't run for president. And I'd be surprised to see that guy positioning himself to become secretary of the War Dept. I'd also be surprised to see that John Kerry take so much money from Raytheon for election campaigns.

What happened to that John Kerry?

He reverted to the plutocratic norm. The better question is what caused him to act honorably for those few brief months or years back in the 70s when he marched with the Winter Soldiers? He might have been jockeying for position even at that time but as you say, speaking out was the right thing to do.

You should report Tyler to the federal authorities (try to find a Republican if you can) for violating your civil rights. Access can not be denied just because that's the way the software works -- it's a right to which you are entitled.

as a matter of principle, ZH is a private site, and it probably has its code of ethics, (I don't know them and I've never tried finding out), but I am assuming they exist. So the site owners have the right to eject anybody who does not abide by them. I would have thought that is clear to all. When I log in it says : Welcome FP. If it said access denied I would assume I had infringed those rules. Whats the big deal?

To the best of my knowledge the "Denied Access" message occurs when you attempt to edit a post to which someone else has already replied. It could also occur as a software glitch. But it's certainly not a conspiracy of Tylers.

No I will not be doing it frequently, mainly just when going to lunchs and get togethers with the locals from Open Carry.org. I personally feel concealed is better, makes you less of a target for someone trying to steal your blaster. But it's nice to have the option, especially during the summer when I go shirtless a lot. Concerning John Kerry : He was a skull n boner at Yale, like the Bushes, coopted into fraternity by his friend John Shattuck.

All his life he fought the Bush clique in the Iran- Drug contra war in Latin America (Ortega - Reagan- North-Noreiga-Bush connection), and later as candidate against GWB in 2004, where a GWB smear operaton was mounted to discredit his role in Vietnam. He built his whole career in this blood fued between the Kennedy-Bush camps.

My point is : the Skull n Bones fraternty is NOT as solid as that. Secret societies do breed Oligarchs, who practice upto  the hilt "when rich thieves fall out" meme, so charactersitic of ambitious men.

Kerry was ambitious, his marriages to rich women show it.
