Complication: US Ally Egypt Gets Involved, Says Will No Longer Tolerate Israel's Gaza Attacks

Tyler Durden's picture

it was only a matter of time before today's Israeli offensive ran into a snag. The complication: Egypt, which has long been treading the fence being both a pro-US regional power (someone has to provide those joint guarantees on Egyptian bonds, and to supply the local tear gas canisters in exchange for a friendly Suez Canal administrator), as well as a pro-Muslim presence. Today, the government was taken to task by the ruling Islamist Muslim Brotherhood which felt the need to be true to its name and express disgust at the Israeli action in Gaza. From AFP: "Egypt’s Islamist Freedom and Justice Party, formerly headed by President Mohammed Mursi, said on Wednesday Egypt would no longer stand by as Israel attacked Palestinians after air strikes killed a Hamas leader. The FJP, the political arm of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood movement, said Israeli air strikes that killed top militant Ahmed al-Jaabari in Gaza earlier on Wednesday required “swift Arab and international action to stop the massacres.” The party, which fielded Mursi in a June election to replace toppled president Hosni Mubarak, said Israel “must take into account the changes in the Arab region and especially Egypt.” Egypt “will not allow the Palestinians to be subjected to Israeli aggression, as in the past,” the party statement said."

The problem is what happens when outgoing regional presence Hillary Clinton makes a phone call to Mursi and reminds him just who runs the country. Should Egypt even then continue pretending it is willing to risk its US alliance and push for solidarity with Palestine then all bets are off, including bets that Suez Canal access to key Israel ally - the US - will remain uninhibited.

More:

Mubarak, overthrown in early 2011, was criticized by his opponents for his response to an Israeli invasion of Gaza in 2008-2009 following rocket fire by Palestinian militants.

Mursi, a vociferous supporter of the Palestinians before his election, had been expected to open up to the blockaded Gaza Strip bordering Egypt, but his government has backed off from his pledges.

And then this:

Not surprisingly, Enduring America's "snap analysis" agrees:

This campaign against Gaza puts the Middle East in an awkward spot. Clearly, "Arab Spring" was, if nothing else, a referendum on human rights. If leaders like Egypt's Morsi, or others in the region, see that their populous views today's events similarly to events in, say, Syria or Libya, then this could force regional leaders to put significant pressure on Israel.

It's too early to speculate, but to say that the region is highly susceptible to instability at the current moment is an understatement.

The ball is now in Israel's court. Because while the small country may be willing to engage three regional powers at the same time, one wonders if going full retard and adding Egypt to the countries provoked will be something even Israel is willing to do.

As opposed to the lovely religion of Judaism, whose holiest book the Talmud states:

"Even the best of the gentiles deserve only death."

Now there's a fair and balanced view of everyone on earth except for 15M "chosenites."

I am no fan of the religion but I cannot allow myself to say those words.  It would invite someone else to say exactly the same thing about Judiasm.  Moderates be praised and may God take away the zealots and suicide brigades.

I have long criticized Israel for its expansion into Pal neighborhoods - I consider it just as destructive as the early Nazi tactics against them in Europe- move them out and then take over their businesses and residences. But can anyone actually criticize them now for taking out the military commander who has been the root of the missle attacks on their civilian population; or going in and cleaning out the missle sites?

The comments here on this topic seem "out of order." How about what would we do if the Mex drug cartels started launcing missles into Texas, or southern Cal?

And has anyone noticed the spread af advanced weapons in the Gaza and South Lebanon? Now they fight with drones and missles and anti-missles. We used to enjoy watching the 150mm SP artillary go at it. But nnow the stakes seem much higher -larger distances; wider selection of targets. Does anyone believe the current IDF can actually prevail? They are the 2-3-4th generation - softer, younger, less motivated to be warriors - not the best by far.

To all those who hate Jewish Israel: never again, means never again, whether you like it, agree with it or comprehend.  The last Holocaust was the last one.  Never again another.  The Islamic superstars of martyrdom can come like a tidal wave of ants; bring them on; Israel has nukes and will use them only at the last moment when there are no other solutions.

Palestinians are killed every day and their land and property is taken.  They are being slowly starved and pushed into the sea while the world stands by.  Americans used to consider fighting back self defense...

The Palestinians are the leading edge of the Islamic Umma that is determined to exterminate the Jews. If you could understand Arabic and listened to what they are saying quite openly to each other, and didn't listen to the soothing words they utter to those in the West that are quite easily fooled, you would know their true intentions.

I am sorry: this is a relic taken out of the toxic closet used by Arafat.  The poor us Palestinians who are utterly destroyed 6 days a week routine is just garbage. Besides, don't start up with me about whose land it was and is.  Was, means a waaaaay back and no, there was no such thing as a Palestinian people before the 20'th century.  There have always been Jews living in Palestine/Israel, even after the total destructions of Babylonians and Romans.  Jews have a foothold written in blood and history and kingdoms in that land; the Palestinians do not.  End of story.

When Azerbaijan started to kill Armenians no one thought Nagorno-Karabakh would prevail in defending its secession from Azerbaijan, but it fought and defeated the Azeri army while Armenia was starving, out of fuel, freezing, and blockaded by Turkey. Don't underestimate the will of a people when defeat means extermination. Israel is surrounded by millions of fanatical Muslims that want to exterminate them. The people of Israel know what they are facing and what defeat means, just like we Armenians know what Turkey and Azerbaijan will do to Armenia if it falters. I am sympathetic with any small people trying to survive, surrounded by enemies that have a blood lust to exterminate them.

Exactly.  Mursi and his minions can shake, rattle and roil all they want for local media conumption, but their generals will pull them up short, asking basically if the Brotherhood really would like to put a couple of Egyptian army divisions on an assault of Israel through lower Gaza? No? Then shut the hell up.  The American's would assure Egypt would be cut off of all aid, which includes $$$ for the Generals and spare parts for their toys.  No, Egypt ain't going anywhere near Rambo headquarters any time soon.  Not happening.

I would say that the Palestinians do a most superb job working against their best interests all by themselves.  I think that were Israel to use reverse psychology and say that they were exiting all the Jews out of the country and giving back all of Jerusalem to them.....that the Hamas leadership would collectively commit suicide.

Meanwhile Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Warren released a statement in support of Israel:

"We're monitoring the situation closely," Warren said. "We stand by our Israeli partners in their right to defend themselves against terrorism."

This Colonel has the audacity to say this after the USS Liberty and 9/11?  C'mon, it's common knowledge (backed by concrete evidence in both cases) that it was not PA. that attacked us, now was it?
