Guest Post: Army, Navy Suicides At Record High

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

We are now averaging more than one suicide per day for active duty military.  This is a topic I have covered before, most recently in my post Anti-Suicide Nasal Spray Coming to Keep Troops From Killing Themselves.  This is an absolute national disgrace.

From USA Today:

With six weeks left in the year, the Army and Navy are already reporting record numbers of suicides, with the Air Force and Marine Corps close to doing the same, making 2012 the worst year for military suicides since careful tracking began in 2001.

The deaths are now occurring at a rate faster than one per day.

When Army suicides among those on active duty and demobilized status are combined, the number exceeds the 207 soldiers who have died so far this year in Afghanistan, a difference further skewed because some of those combat zone deaths were also suicides.

We are living in a sick society that is getting sicker and sicker each day.  We must turn this around and the only way to do so is to get the facts to people and shake them out of their apathy.

Is he a reformed peckerwood, or did he just sign up 'cause he was poor?

EDIT: I think this is a fair question.  It's telling that no one wants to think about it.

Kids don't join because they are poor, but because of the lack of opportunity.....

Thanks tyler(s),  This is so very tragic. These are our best. That this is the only forum where this will be discussed is to be expected. Suicide; a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Seasmoke's picture

when the suicides catch up to the cheating then it will be a story

Walter_Sobchak's picture

yup, hard enough to fight wars for the bankers dude, especially when you come home and find one with your wife

Suicide- the ultimate critique.  Lot of that going around.

IMO, they are just getting to the dark heart of the intended purpose of their training, albeit on their own terms.

A large percentage of Vets get treated like complete shit when their shelf life is up, by our government... The private sector is left to pick up the pieces, which I'm not complaining about. It just makes me want to puke when I see how people are used like pawns in a global "professional sports style" game for corrupt leaders.

Urban Redneck's picture

8 years of BS "support the troops, not the war", then they put that traitor ShitSaki in at the VA, then 4 years of silence from both the D&R whores, now one of them will inevitably trot out veterans as a cheap pawn in the fiscal cliff pissing match, while neither side talks about cutting civilian pay or the luxury MIC armaments shopping spree.  Unfortunately, it's not going to get better unless and until the bureaucracy collapses.

"We must turn this around and the only way to do so is to get the facts to people and shake them out of their apathy."

Mike.....this is not a knowledge or apathy problem. It is one of both public and personal denial.

Reminds me of the late 60's and early 70's during the Vietnam War. Rarely did The War Machine actually describe a soldier's death as suicide. But the soldiers who came home told another story about all those US "combat" deaths.

<At least told by those who wanted to discuss what they had seen.>

There was fragging during the Vietnam War too.

zapdude's picture

Vietnam vets suffered 58K combat-related deaths and over 100k suicides.

What will the total fallout be from the Afghan-Iraq wars?

It is just awful on so many levels what the incestuous military industrial complex, banksters, and our parasitic government has done and continues to do to our country.

Link please for 100,000 Vietnam era suicides.

That, my friend, is total bull shit.  100% bull shit.

I thought it was for the greater good.  Now I know better.  None of my sons will you find serving the powerful.  I will educate them in the ways of the warrior, but not for some other man.

Still serving, but don't know why.

These  fucking Masters of War are murderers and should all be sent to Guantanemo for life. Torture till dead. How can the cocksucker sleep at night?

America, as a nation, is committing national suicide and no one seems to care.

People would care if they understood. The problem is not apathy, but stupidity. Modern capital enables buttloads of dumb people to survive who otherwise wouldn't. They breed and create more dumb people every day. Hence, Idiocracy.

Basically Dubya and his creepy cohorts decided to give the troops a much deserved raise fo playing the pawns in HIS game so the ponzi scheming realtors (again BABY boomers) can siphon it from them when they're in need of shelter.

On the other hand, a lot of these guys are too stupid to take advantage of that GI bill.  I can't feel sorry for them there.

I have to deal with the retarded Boomers in a military facility.  OMG, they're dumb.  They are sooo dumb. I ended up yelling at one for being STUPID and the other braintrust basically convinced me that I was better off dead.

When these chemically enhanced, economically illiterate voting majority speak, I tend to feel that I'm better off dead.  I can see why the troops are depressed.

Dr. Acula's picture

The suicide rate in our society may be alarming, but there's nothing unusual about suicides in the Army or Navy.

There are nearly 1 million people on active duty in the Army and Navy and about 1 commits suicide each day.

There are about 300 million people in US and about 100 commit suicide each day.

So the suicide rate for those on active duty is only about 3x the national average. But these are largely males who are 4x more likely to commit suicide anyway.

Dr. Acula's picture

Thanks for downvoting me, moron. Instead of a War on Terror, let's have a War on Arithmetic!

akak's picture

And those reported military personnel suicides only represent the unambiguous suicides which occur AFTER those personnel leave their respective services and become veterans.  What are the suicide rates, I wonder, for those currently IN military service, or among those whose suicides are masked by their military activities?  How much "Suicide by cop" occurs on the battlefield?

The war on terror is a war on math and science.  See Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth.

This post really shows the crap that can be made of raw numbers.  1) 300MM includes every carbon-based human 2) At least half of this number are worthless to an advancing society (druggies, alcoholics, obese, lazy, welfare, etc) and could be culled with no impact 3) Our military men/women are some of the finest in our society, with problems that develop due to constant deployment to war zones, separation from loved ones, etc. To say that the latter is ONLY "3x the national average" indicates just how numbers can be manipulated.

Dr. Acula's picture

>300MM includes every carbon-based human

Yes, including women and children who don't commit suicide very often. If you exclude counting women and children, you will see that the suicide rate of those on active duty is unremarkable. Truth and logic, yo.

The rest of your comments regarding who is "worthless" and who is "finest" are subjective and irrelevant to the question at hand.

Makes me sad, mad and sick all at the same time...

I pray for our troops, that they come home soon, that their loved ones and friends are there for them and that their lives are still very much ahead of them.

Henry Hub's picture

I wonder how many of these military suicides are generals and admirals? Probably zero. These glorified bureaucrats parading around in their fancy uniforms with all the perks of a potentate. Everyone saluting and kissing their asses. They could easily get ride of half of them. I'm waiting for a rash of generals and admirals committing suicide. Going to be a long wait I'm sure.

I know a few four stars who are contemplating hari kari as we speak.

Effects (not "side_ effects) of anti depressants for many is SUICIDE.

Since war is NOT naturual most people's consciousness will become unstable after being in it.

The dim lightbulbs of our time have beaten it into many people's minds that mental illness can

be treated by these psychotropic drugs -- and they are handing them out in great numbers among

the military, perhaps x3 as an above post mentioned as the statitistic above the average US population

that are killing them self...

Dr. Acula's picture

>"These are our best...some of the finest in our society"

Please folks... let's not exaggerate.

A lot of them are young people who don't possess skills commanding a high wage rate on the market. They are beneficiaries of a socialist employment program. Many of them childishly admire violence or simply join seeking government benefits. They are political pawns.

combatsnoopy's picture

Actually the noveau finance majors (incl. ASIANS) from the west side of the country and many more signed up for a SURVIVAL JOB.  The ARMY will take almost anybody unfortunately, but I know there are quality people in that mix.

Oh the irony how the draft dodging baby boomer retards sent their children off to war for a SURVIVAL JOB.

About the wars, as far as I'm concerned the oil companies can finance them and these men and women deserve a raise.

Unless you are in lucky sperm club, of course.

had a friend die this way, was on a couple tours.

to me it is an issue of the young guys growing up believing that we are the good guys in a black & white world and then unfortunately finding out there is alot of gray out there.

wish the military drs would somehow relay the message that it is ok to be upset, disappointed with yourself, your family and your country.  that they are not expected to be  heroes, but just men, who experience things they don't want to remember, and need to get beyond it and move on.

Kali's picture

These are numbers from a volunteer/privatised military.  Imagine what the suicide rate would be if they were REQUIRED to draft to fight wars.  That was the whole point.  Since you volunteered and/or a mercenary, it's you own fault.

SMG's picture

True, but many who join the military have no other choice, thanks to the banker devastated economy/country.  They do because, for many it's either a life a crime, or a lifetime on welfare, and are honestly trying to better themselves.

Kali's picture

Sorry, no excuse.  If you can't support yourself without working for sociopaths and killing people for them, do us all a favor and off yerself.  Or even better, off the sociopaths.  If you can't live without goobermint assistance all your life, you are gonna die anyway when the government collapses.  It is not ok to resort to crime or murder if you can't support yourself.

toomanyfakeconservatives's picture

Please enlighten us and tell us how you gained the moral high ground. Inquiring minds want to know.

Kali's picture

let me guess a current or former murderer for sociopaths?  On the taxpayer dime, which kills the economy so stupid fucks who can't find a job, support themselves by killing for sociopaths on the taxpayer dime.

If the military was really so moral, all you fine soldiers would be rounding up congress, wall street and the rest and throwing them in Gitmo.  The examples I see are more like overweight, bellowing pigs, like my friend's brother, the one collecting $7000 a month in military retirement.

So when is it that the great roundup you post about begins again? Senile fantasy of yours methinks.

Dr. Acula's picture

Kali's morality, or hir favorite breakfast cereal, are not relevant. Hir argument stands on its own.

alien-IQ's picture

Wearing a uniform while committing murder does not absolve you of the crime of murder but rather it only adds the shame of servitude to the guilt of murder.

If you kill someone of your own volition, for personal reasons, you might be able to live with that. But to kill someone simply because you were told "that's your job" is something that will come back to haunt any person with a conscience.

11b40's picture

Read up on Viet Nam.  The draftees eventually got fed up, thus the riots at home and the fraggings in the combat zones.  Suicide was not the problem.  Killing the commanders was one problem, and finding enough who were willing to serve was another problem.

Now, our problem is a mercenary army.  If there were a draft, we would have been out of Afghanistan in a year, and would have never gone to Iraq.
