Food Banks in the U.S. Running Low on Supplies... Ominous Sign for 2013

This is a very interesting yet ominous article from Reuters about the current food bank situation in these United States. As a result of the drought this summer the Federal government ended up buying less food than normal, and because this excess food is used to provide assistance to the poor in many cases, there simply may not be enough to go around. This sets up a potentially tragic situation as we head into 2013, and is likely to bring heightened social unrest to our shores as I outlined in my recent article The Global Spring.

The worst U.S. drought in more than half a century has weakened the safety net for the 50 million Americans who struggle to get enough to eat, and the nation’s food banks are raising the alarm as the holiday season gets into full swing.
Executives at major food banks across the United States worry they will not be able to keep pace with demand, which they don’t expect to ease until more Americans find better paying jobs. In a sign of how stressed the budgets of many Americans are, a record 47.1 million people used food stamps in August 2012, up from 45.8 million the year earlier.
With such pressures at work,on-hand supplies at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank have fallen from a peak of about 3.3 weeks in 2010 to less than two weeks – the lowest in recent history, according to its president and CEO, Michael Flood.
Tightening food supplies last summer forced the food bank to start a waiting list because it does not have enough inventory to expand beyond the 640 agencies it already supplies with food. There are now 565 nonprofits on the waiting list, Flood said.
Government commodities once made up 28 percent of the food flowing through the Feeding America network, which includes about 90 percent of U.S. food banks and provides food for about 37 million people during the year. This year those commodities account for 17 percent, Feeding America said.
The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has seen its monthly supplies of TEFAP products plummet by roughly two-thirds to about 170,000 pounds from 500,000 pounds. At the same time, state budget cuts have slashed its annual funding by about half to $500,000, Executive Director Clyde Fitzgerald said.
This is a development we must all keep a close eye on.

But to clarify on your confusion, "thanksgiving" is a "holiday" that has been completely commercialized much like Christmas. Were the original settlers reduced to cannibalism upon their arrival to the USA at the beginning of winter? Were they "saved" and "thankful" to the Native Americans for sacrificing their stored food? After rereading his and other posts, I believe that I can tease out the gist of his bugaboo regarding Thanksgiving, that being the takeover by the Europeans of the North American continent from the original inhabitants, but to link that with Thanksgiving and thereby condemn the holiday is utterly specious and illogical --- by that argument, EVERY aspect of our current American society can thereby be condemned. The holiday of Thanksgiving, even the original one, did not inherently involve nor was associated with the slaughter of Native Americans.
The whole argument against Thanksgiving is bullshit anyways - the Indians replaced the inhabinets of North America when they migrated here from East Asia - they probably fucking ate them too. So we are back to Happy Thanksgiving....

I don't give money to charity because where I live (the UK) most charities are either tax evasion schemes for the rich or just businesses run for the benefit of its employees, paying fat salaries to worthless CEOs and well entrenched employees, organizing big partis once in a while, spending more money on marketting than on doing good and in general wasting 70%+ of the money they are given. In fact, they might be only kind of business that is even less efficient than the State. There might be a couple of good ones amongst all the corrupt ones, but given the local laws and social practices (can't talk bad about charities, so there's no real serious discussion about abuses in that area), I can't tell the righteous from the sinners, so I won't give my hard earned money to any.

Sorry but "Save the Children" is not the best way to save the children. The best way to save the children is to avoid that lots of them are born in regions that can barelly support the existing population.

Food stamps are one form of government handout that many like to condemn. But no one seems to want to condemn the the Federal Flood Insurance Program. It is going to be handing out over seven billion in payments mostly to rich assholes who insist on having homes in flood plains and along the coast. These are properties the private insurance firm won't touch with a ten foot pole. Everyone is, in some form or other, is sucking at the government tit. A lot of it we never hear about.

On our current path, he is more correct than not unfortunately.
I have come to the conclusion that human nature itself (free will per se) creates the growth paradox that is too easily exploited by those who understand this and can position themselves accordingly. The growth mantra ultimately drives everything... right to the same logical conclusion. The paradoxical component to this is that avoidance of compound growth would look and feel like oppression - and would be cast off as such. Hence the cycle of history in terms of government regimes.
This particular cycle is really scary. It has been fueled by incredible advances in technology and cheap energy (oil) that have allowed us to build the most complex civilization ever known to man. With such complexity though, we have also woven in dependance. Redundacy is lacking. The system is inherently fragile and getting more fragile by the day. The design has been ad hoc in the name of profit.
Probability of a very ugly near future is simply too high to ignore.
Fact is, friend, most of us need to starve to death. 47 million people on food stamps need to be starving right fucking now. if you cant feed yourself and your family then mother nature has no use for you and neither does your society. Die already, you lazy fucks, and let society advance.
I have > 1 years supply of food, water, fuel and the means to defend it. I pay attention to my environment. I see threats and plan accordingly. I wont starve. I might die defending my shit, but Im not going to starve.
If you are not a sulf-sufficient farmer or hunter-gatherer, one could argue that you (and I) should and will starve too --- it will just come one year or so later for you than for all the others.

1. If and when it falls apart we are going to have alot of pissed of people. After the hoodlums tire from looting plasma tvs & Ipads their going to realize mama isn't baking the fried chicken you like because mama doesn't have any.
2. Then ,after the 7/11's and stores are looted, people will start going house to house with one main goal, and scoring some computer equipment won't be one of them.
3.Sooner or later the homes in the city will dry up of any canned food, firearms laying about and former virgins that have served their purpose-THEN they will be finding other places-like yours.
4. The actual wording of this might be akin to some partiers discovering throwing rocks at a killer bee's nest is not a good idea; i.e. SWARM. In that alot of people will be coming to pay you a visit.
5. Of course you will be successful at first in keeping out the easy ones, the curious and the weak. But a swarm doesn't happen all at once, there is a progression. Sooner or later the easier homes around you will be emptied, and most will keep going further out. Incidentally while others are going further out trying to find food, others will be coming in from their point of view...and then you will be against thousands of battle scarred, tough, pissed off and hungry people-with guns of people they killed- that damn well know you would not be fortifying something for nothing. And they will keep coming, and coming and coming.

Any significant hit to the supply chain for water, fuel or food and chaos is the result in a short order. Well said. The way I see it we are going to become something similar to Modern Day China, with abundant riches for the connected and affluent and bare necessities for everyone else, with a Orwellian style control grid that will look just like the movie V for vendetta. That's the best scenario.
The others are quite similar to the ones I listed, which would occur if the USD is devalued and massive entitlement checks stop coming. Even if the USD devaluation is a small one at first, the associated tax rises and welfare cuts would exascerbate the situation, which would effect GDP and...you got it, cause more devaluations.
The PTB would have already booked to greener pastures, but their henchmen, still living the good life in cities with food,water and garbage collection would do everything needed to keep control. But they couldn't go far since it costs a lot of capital which would be severely limited, so their would be zones or city states created. Got a USID? Good you can take your kids and live in the zone if you have any skills.

You are assuming a whole lot more discipline and organization than is likely. Most of the lazy, drug-addled, fat people are going to kill each other off for the last piece of Momma's fried chicken. "Battle-scarred and tough"? I don't think so. They only get off the sofa to take their EBT card to the corner store for beer and cigarettes. The average thug is not going to be willing or able to walk more than 5 miles. The swarm is only going to go a limited distance, and will kill each other off. The survivors will be desperate, but not disciplined and organized. Agree that an established community, ammo, and experienced soldiers in a group 50+ miles away from a city is the place to be.

You may not like me, but at the very least I am no burden on anyone for anything. My existence costs no one anything. It will remain that way until I die. I refuse to burden my family and my society because I believe it is dishonorable to do so. If more people thought like me there would be zero need for welfare or any safety net of any kind.
Teach your children to depend on no one when they are adults. It is the greatest act of charity you can give your society because your children will not grow up to be dependents and moochers.

Present retirees were forced to share what they earned whether they liked it or not. If they had been allowed to save the money that was confiscated they'd be using their own money now. Take that up with your government.
