Food Banks in the U.S. Running Low on Supplies... Ominous Sign for 2013

Tyler Durden's picture

Via Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

This is a very interesting yet ominous article from Reuters about the current food bank situation in these United States.  As a result of the drought this summer the Federal government ended up buying less food than normal, and because this excess food is used to provide assistance to the poor in many cases, there simply may not be enough to go around.  This sets up a potentially tragic situation as we head into 2013, and is likely to bring heightened social unrest to our shores as I outlined in my recent article The Global Spring.

From Reuters:

The worst U.S. drought in more than half a century has weakened the safety net for the 50 million Americans who struggle to get enough to eat, and the nation’s food banks are raising the alarm as the holiday season gets into full swing.

Executives at major food banks across the United States worry they will not be able to keep pace with demand, which they don’t expect to ease until more Americans find better paying jobs. In a sign of how stressed the budgets of many Americans are, a record 47.1 million people used food stamps in August 2012, up from 45.8 million the year earlier.

With such pressures at work,on-hand supplies at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank have fallen from a peak of about 3.3 weeks in 2010 to less than two weeks – the lowest in recent history, according to its president and CEO, Michael Flood.

Tightening food supplies last summer forced the food bank to start a waiting list because it does not have enough inventory to expand beyond the 640 agencies it already supplies with food. There are now 565 nonprofits on the waiting list, Flood said.

Government commodities once made up 28 percent of the food flowing through the Feeding America network, which includes about 90 percent of U.S. food banks and provides food for about 37 million people during the year. This year those commodities account for 17 percent, Feeding America said.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has seen its monthly supplies of TEFAP products plummet by roughly two-thirds to about 170,000 pounds from 500,000 pounds. At the same time, state budget cuts have slashed its annual funding by about half to $500,000, Executive Director Clyde Fitzgerald said.

This is a development we must all keep a close eye on.

I realistically give myself a less than 50 chance of survival once the SHTF.  But my chance is significantly higher than the zombies have.  Ill take a plan and preparation over no plan and no preparation any day.  But since youre going to be winging it, good luck with that.

A lot of non-profits are scams so that rich kids who can't get a real job (productive) in corporate America can run the "charity" while paying themselves an exhoribant salary. I usually donate food to the local food bank and not fiat so I know that my money will be utilized. I did not know what Oquities stated about them buying from whole sale retailers, but one never knows where cash goes when you donate to one of these charities. I think my local food bank is run by volunteers, but I do not know for certain if anyone takes away a salary. IMHO, food donations are better than cash.

Re charity -- begins at home, i.e. locally. If in doubt, find out what your township or county is doing.

The rain has fallen well this spring in central Argentina.  The soy is growing lush, the fruits and vegetables are fresh and full, and the carne is delicious.  Maybe Argentina could send some of the surplus to the U.S. ... oh wait... some Judge just ruled Argentina owes money to New York Hedge Funds.

There are adequate supplies of food in the US. There is just not enough free food.

It doesn't help that government policies diverted 40 percent of this year's corn crop, which could otherwise feed livestock or people, into ethanol production to appease the environmental lobby and agribusiness. It doesn't help that unemployment and underemployment remain substantially above historical norms. Further, it doesn't help that Dear Leader's political agenda is toxic to job creation.

As to possible "heightened social unrest," buy bullets, bitchez.

Can't these stupid food banks simply figure out how to expand their base food supplies by 20X through fractional reserve food lending?  Don't they know how to rehypothecate meat and cheese? Don't they know that creative accounting and "mark to farmer's market" can create food out of thin air?

I mean, they do call themselves "banks", after all --- get with the program guys!

Better paying jobs would reduce their eligibility for food stamps.  I'm not so sure this guy is right.

More food stamps and Obamaphones for everybody!

Most if not all of you don't remember the Care package that the government used to give to the needy or those without work. It consisted of a large jar of peanut butter, powered eggs, flour and powered milk. The government also used to hand out chunks of cheese to the needy. Nothing like today where we have 47 million Americans getting a check or food stamps to buy nicer things like steak and shirimp which I have seen while working at a large supermarket years ago.

Powered eggs kept you alive but it also was more of an incentive to want to go out and find work. Today we have generations of freeloaders that don't even consider looking for work as long as the benefits continue. Now we here talk again about extending the unemployment for the long term unemployed. Last I heard it was 99 weeks and it could be even longer soon. Its no wonder Obama won. Nobody collecting a check for sitting on their ass for so long would vote for a change where they might have to go looking for work again.

Bring back the care package. Oh powered eggs are not that bad, when your hungry most anything taste good.

I had some of that government cheese back in Reagan's time. It wasn't as spicy as I expected. I thought it was for on nachos, but it was bland.

When I went to pick it up, the line was real long, so I looked around the building and found a side door open, and inside were many cases of these huge cheese blocks.

I grabbed two cases, but as I was leaving, this old woman started yelling at me "Put that back! That's nacho cheese! Get in line like everybody else! THAT'S NACHO CHEESE!

Rush Limbaugh has his tradtional Thanksgiving message about the triumph of Capitalism !  I have my traditional Thanksgiving message of the comparison of Mexican and American fast food value !  I stopped at a PEMEX gas station and bought a ham sandwich from their store .... lovingly made by a neighbor lady .... sold at the counter .... $15 pesos ($1.20 US) .... it consisted of an almost extended hand sized roll filled with a razor thin slice of turkey ham, mayo, lettuce, white onion, tomato and jalapeño pepper (all very thin portions) wrapped in one paper napkin and a plastic bag !  I stopped for lunch at In-N-Out burger located in a dazzling shopping center with free parking, drive thru service and fully insured, spotless bathrooms with hot water, comfortable seating, condiment and drink bar, napkin dispensers, debit card service, free senior coffee in my road mug, uniformed and motivated, well compensated AND benefited, friendly employees, 80% of the diners were Mexican/Mexican American, a couple of the employees were black, my cheeseburger cost $2.20 ($2.37 with tax), it consisted of 1/8 lb (maybe 1/6 lb before grilling) fresh quality beef, cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, 1000 island dressing and toasted bun !  What was a better value .... you decide ?  We shouldn't throw our free enterprize system away .... that would be very ungrateful behavior on Thanksgiving day ?

In my experience, there is a lot of moral hazard in the statistics of food bank usage.  Many food banks are no-questions-asked operations and some people who could provide for themselves are lining up for free food.  Also, we don't know how elastic the donor base really is.  If the local food bank actually ran out of core food and had to turn people away, maybe they would implement some needs-test and the news would certainly spur donors to give more.  Only after the no-questions-asked situaiton is changed can we start to see how much real need exists.

50 million Americans struggle to get enough to eat?  BULLSHIT.

Go to a real country, a "third world" country, where people are actually working to eat, and it takes a day's labor to feed yourself, to see what struggle means.

Having to get your EBT card and find a ride to Wally Mart is not struggling.  Not by any stretch of the imagination.

If Americans were struggling, they would be thin and lean and have that desperate, hungry look about them.  Not obese and slow and content to live their lives as consumers.

Agree!  I will not give money or food to our local food bank.  They have started a back pack program for children to take home for the weekend.  These same children are getting a free breakfast and lunch at school!  What are the parents doing with the EBT/food stamp money?  I resent people buying fast food and luxury foods with tax dollars, if I have to buy your food, you can eat loss of rice and inexpensive meat!!!

We have the non-poor poor....

All my life I have watched as my taxes paid human sponges to sit around, eat Cheetos and beer and father the next generation of sponges. My taxes have also paid for unneccesary wars and bailed out incompetent businesses. I have two years of food for my family, soon to be three years. Is there any reason I should care about low stocks at the local food bank? Bring on the great reset.
