Russia Sends Warships To Gaza Coast

Tyler Durden's picture

For the entire 8 day duration of Operation Pillar of Defense, there was one major geopolitical player who had been largely quiet and certainly absent from the scene: the same player whose unflinching position over the Syria conflict has so far prevented any intervention in the civil war torn country: Russia. The same Russia which has a military base in the Syrian port city of Tarsus, and thus in its own eyes, a very substantial "national interest" role to play in the middle east, one that is certainly opposing that of the US and the pro-NATO forces, a tension that will surely boil to the surface now that war between Iran and Israel is always at most "hours away" depending on who is asked, and which one day will be more than just a war of words. Today, Russia decided that it had kept quiet for too long over the Gaza conflict, with Voice of Russia reporting, courtesy of Al Arabiya, that Russian warships anchored off the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea will be put on military alertness should the conflict in Gaza escalate and brought in proximity, according Russian Navy Command source on Friday.

Sure enough, there is a diplomatic reason for the escalation: evacuation preparedness. To wit: "The detachment of combat ships of the Black Sea Fleet, including the Guards missile cruiser Moskva, the patrol ship Smetliviy, large landing ships Novocherkassk and Saratov, the sea tug MB-304 and the big sea tanker Ivan Bubnov, got the order to remain in the designated area of the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea for a possible evacuation of Russian citizens from the area of the Gaza strip in case of escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict”, the spokesperson said. He added that ship crew members will continue routine combat training, maintenance of equipment and weapons along with other military services.

A missile cruiser, which just happens to be the flag ship of the Russian Black Sea naval fleet, and whose purpose is "to destroy hostile surface ships" in order to aid evacuation? Odd...

Naturally, only very naive people would buy this "explanation", which does nothing to mitigate the factor that Russia, too, is now implicitly involved in the Gaza conflict. How soon until China sends a few of its own warships to the region. Just in case China nationals needs evaluation too.

And if indeed evacuation is the catalyst, it may happen soon, because the tenuous cease fire between the two nations may not last long following another reflaring of hostilities between Israel and Gaza:

Hundreds of Palestinians approached the border fence Friday in several locations in southern Gaza, testing expectations Israel would no longer enforce a 300-meter-wide (300-yard-wide) no-go zone on the Palestinian side of the fence that was meant to prevent infiltrations into Israel. In the past, Israeli soldiers routinely opened fire on those who crossed into the zone.

In one incident captured by Associated Press video, several dozen Palestinians, most of them young men, approached the fence, coming close to a group of Israeli soldiers standing on the other side.

Some Palestinians briefly talked to the soldiers, while others appeared to be taunting them with chants of “God is Great” and “Mursi, Mursi,” in praise of Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi, whose mediation led to the truce.

At one point, a soldier shouted in Hebrew, “Go there, before I shoot you,” and pointed away from the fence, toward Gaza. The soldier then dropped to one knee, assuming a firing position. Eventually, a burst of automatic fire was heard, but it was not clear whether any of the casualties were from this incident.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said a 20-year-old man was killed and 19 people were wounded by Israeli fire near the border.

Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. observer, said Israeli forces fatally shot Anwar Abdulhadi Qudaih in the head and injured at least 19 other Palestinian civilians in a border area east of Khan Younis.

During the incidents, Hamas security tried to defuse the situation and keep the crowds away from the fence.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, a top Hamas official at the ongoing negotiations in Cairo, told The Associated Press that the violence would have no effect on the ceasefire.

The crowds were mainly made up of young men but also included farmers hoping to once again farm lands in the buffer zone. Speaking by phone from the buffer zone, 19-year-old Ali Abu Taimah said he and his father were checking three acres of family land that have been fallow for several years.

“When we go to our land, we are telling the occupation (Israel) that we are not afraid at all,” he said.

Israel’s military said roughly 300 Palestinians approached the security fence at different points, tried to damage it and cross into Israel. Soldiers fired warning shots in the air, but after the Palestinians refused to move back, troops fired at their legs, the military said. A Palestinian infiltrated into Israel during the unrest, but was returned to Gaza, it said.

As we previously showed the Brent market priced in a ceasefire for about 10 minutes last week, before sending Brent to its weekly high, on the realization that the peace between Israel and Gaza is merely lip service until at least one more foreign political entity figures out some way to benefit from a re-escalation of hostilities. Only this time the Russians will be there too.

Putin and his gang were/are robbing their own people and looting their country and building palaces. The Russia’s economy is controlled from Washington and Putin has a very powerful neighbor: China. This neighbor may invade Russia at will at any moment.

Putin is a Saddam #2. Like Saddam before him, Putin has nobody to protect him and nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Putin knows that his generals, like Saddam's generals, will not fight for him. His generals stashed their own money and their families outside off Russia. Russia is in a 10th-inning with its power elite and oligarchy are about to fight each other openly.

The present world is a very unstable place with both the USA and EU are in a deep economic & political crisis. The present world is just about to explode in a worldwide violence. Putin, Obama, Merkel, Cameron, Hollande, etc are clueless and incompetent. There is nobody today to manage the today world affair. China is also neither ready nor willing to do it. The world is about to go into an anarchy.

john39,

Unfortunately, you know very little about Putin and Russia.

·         Putin's PM Medvedev (real name Mendel) is a Jew.

·         Russian Central Bank is in no position to print Rubbles without the FED permission.

·         Putin got rid of few high-power Jewish oligarchs because they tried to removed him

·         Now, Putin is fighting for his own life since America and EU tried to prevent him from returning back to power. Putin has made his career as a KGB assassin. Now, he is afraid for his own life. He is even afraid to leave Russia for any foreign visit. Russia's military-industrial complex hates Putin but Jewish bankers still like him.

·         He is a Mafia chief who has problems controlling his own gang. Lately, he has too much challenge to his own power. Just a week ago, his own defense minister was removed and a new “tough guy” was put as a new defense minister. This new “tough guy” is not a close Putin associate.  By the way, the first foreign trip of the new Russian defense minister was to China!

[The authenticity of this document is not known]

Seventy hours ago, while on Air Force One, President Barak Obama issued a press release that has been utterly ignored by the Western Press.

The president has openly announced a move against violent plotters inside the US government and espionage agents. He does not use the terms “AIPAC” or “the Israel lobby” but it is highly unlikely he could be referring to anything else.

In fact, we can think of no other group.

I was privately briefed on some of the reasons behind this document. On what is known, not “surmised,” I will explain:

There is, currently, within the US military, the Executive branch of government and among extremist “power brokers” in America an active plot to “alter” America’s form of government through “decapitation.”

Let me be clear. Where the memo, printed in full below, refers to “violent”, it means “assassination” of many top leaders in America including but not limited to the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense and others.

The plot makes use of the resources of major private defense contractors and their intelligence and special operations personnel. There has been active recruiting that has been noted and is why the memo was released and why many members of the military have been subjected to investigation.

The Benghazi attack was planned and financed by this group.

Many writers in the alternative media have noted much of what is going on but not all. Some have shown access to very knowledgeable sources.

Behind the plotters are drug cartels that have penetrated the US government, former lobbyists who were moved into government during the Bush (43) administration and now are suspected of being involved in a coup attempt.

There is no direct evidence tying any foreign government to this plot though most are “fanatically” aligned with the militant Likudists in Israel under Netanyahu’s regime.

The President’s text below, unedited:
The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
November 21, 2012

Presidential Memorandum -- National Insider Threat Policy and Minimum Standards for Executive Branch Insider Threat Programs

Memorandum for the heads of executive departments and agencies

Subject: National Insider Threat Policy and Minimum Standards for Executive Branch Insider Threat Programs

This Presidential Memorandum transmits the National Insider Threat Policy and Minimum Standards for Executive Branch Insider Threat Programs (Minimum Standards) to provide direction and guidance to promote the development of effective insider threat programs within departments and agencies to deter, detect, and mitigate actions by employees who may represent a threat to national security. These threats encompass potential espionage, violent acts against the Government or the Nation, and unauthorized disclosure of classified information, including the vast amounts of classified data available on interconnected United States Government computer networks and systems.

The Minimum Standards provide departments and agencies with the minimum elements necessary to establish effective insider threat programs. These elements include the capability to gather, integrate, and centrally analyze and respond to key threat-related information; monitor employee use of classified networks; provide the workforce with insider threat awareness training; and protect the civil liberties and privacy of all personnel.

The resulting insider threat capabilities will strengthen the protection of classified information across the executive branch and reinforce our defenses against both adversaries and insiders who misuse their access and endanger our national security.

Barack Obama

A very real threat to world stability

To some, at a glance, this might actually sound like a response to leaks within the CIA and White House except for some extraordinary language. Please make very special note of the following:

“…to deter, detect and mitigate actions by employees who may present a threat to national security…These threats include…violent acts against the Government and the Nation…”

Please note that they refer to “violent acts” and speak of both the “government” and “nation.”

By “government,” they are indicting, with no “wiggle room,” assassination plots.

By “nation,” they may well be referring to false flag terrorism that may well include use of weapons of mass destruction.
Britain was subject to such a threat during the London Olympics, one that would never have been successfully overcome without the help of journalists who put themselves at great risk.

Espionage

The US government has had a twelve-year moratorium against arrest and prosecution of spies within our government and military other than those who can be tied to China.

The most famous Chinese “spy” was Wen Lee Ho, a nuclear scientist at Los Alamos Labs. He was arrested in 1999, held in solitary confinement for a year and then released.

In order to get an accurate picture I phoned two friends, one a senior FBI counter-intelligence operative and the other a very senior US Army intelligence officer.

The question I put before them, while eating breakfast, was:
“Please list the nations that represent the greatest threat of espionage against the United States and, which nations, in order, are believed to represent the “penetration threat” that President Obama is referring to.”

From the FBI, their appraisal not intended for the “pop culture” media:
“Our greatest direct threat is Israel and the Israel lobby. They have systematically penetrated every aspect of government and the military and, if they cannot get documents from those branches, friends in congress will give them access to anything that branch has available.
After that is India, with every research facility at risk from RAW (Indian Intelligence) penetration and then Cuba, Mexico and Turkey.

The primary end users of this intelligence, the “clients,” are Russia and China.”

From the US Army:

“I agree with Israel and the rest but we have not had Turkey on our radar. The obvious end users are, of course, Russia and China based on capability.

The issue I have is how a presidential press release, an extraordinary and almost “draconian” document has gone without an uproar from congress and wide press coverage. Who has the power to suppress reporting on something like this, though, I know that you will say it is Israel, I would want proof.

Though there has been no official notification of this, I am of the impression that we now consider any mention of Israeli spying to be highly classified. Only Russia and China are officially listed, entirely out of concern not to offend lobbyists whose feelings outweigh real issues of national security.”

Then I turn on my television, hour after hour of TV shows about espionage and terrorism. Both American and British TV are the same.

All spies are from Iran and Pakistan; nations that our actual intelligence agencies indicate represent no espionage threat to speak of.

In fact, in my two Saturday morning phone interviews, which can, of course, be confirmed by Homeland Security who has tapped my phones, I have reflected with great accuracy.
Thus, we ask you to read what President Obama really did not say “between the lines,” the message is quite clear.

We do not see a roundup of AIPAC spies, not like in the early days of the Bush administration although Attorney General John Ashcroft quashed that investigation.

What we are seeing is a hunt for traitors within the American government and military, some of which is working its way onto the news.

The question of the moment, however, is this:
“How can a President of the United States announce that the government is infiltrated with terrorists and spies and no newspaper, television network or other form of media notices?”

GF/JR

If you read the White House memo you will see that the President announced no such thing.  For those with average reading comprehension, the memo is self-explanatory.

RichardP,

Thanks for the White House web site.

"For those with average reading comprehension, the memo is self-explanatory." This is the different story. The latest Defense department and CIA stories indicate to me that there is something very serious going on.  This is Obama's 2nd term. I do not expect that Obama will be easily managed as it was during his 1st term in the office. During his 2nd-term, I do expect "major surprises".

By the way, Jewish Bolsheviks and Jewish bankers also thought they would be able to "manage"  Stalin and Hitler. Granted, Obama is not either of them.  Obama is not FDR but the world now is not any easier than it was back in 1930s.

Mass immigration to Israel have improved ties.  Putin calls Israel a Russian-speaking nation. Putin visited Israel in June of this year:

Israel was eager to cultivate its relations with a major world and regional player. Those ties grew after the fall of the Soviet Union, which was hostile to Israel, and have been cemented by the arrival in Israel of more than a million immigrants from the former Soviet Union, among them 10,000 Red Army veterans.

Mr. Netanyahu’s cabinet includes several Russian speakers, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Trade between Israel and Russia is increasing, and Russian tourists here are second only to Americans in number, though many of them come only for a one-day Holy Land excursion as part of a cruise or a longer stay in nearby Turkey.

Mr. Netanyahu said he was sure that Mr. Putin’s visit would further improve ties in agriculture, science, technology and space, among other fields.

Russia's support and sympathy goes to ordinary non-Zionist Israelis living in a police state under terrible economic circumstances, not for Bibi's megalomaniac government.

OTOH, even if there are so many Russians in Israel it won't mean much to Russia if they're Zionists.

The emigration of Russian Jews was facilitated when the NATO defense plans stolen by Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard were traded to the Soviets.

Why Pollard Should Never Be Released (The Traitor)
The New Yorker Magazine | :January 18, 1999, pp. 26-33 | SEYMOUR M. HERSH

A number of officials strongly suspect that the Israelis repackaged much of Pollard's material and provided it to the Soviet Union in exchange for continued Soviet permission for Jews to emigrate to Israel. Other officials go further, and say there was reason to believe that secret information was exchanged for Jews working in highly sensitive positions in the Soviet Union. A significant percentage of Pollard's documents, including some that described the techniques the American Navy used to track Soviet submarines around the world, was of practical importance only to the Soviet Union. One longtime C.I.A. officer who worked as a station chief in the Middle East said he understood that "certain elements in the Israeli military had used it" -- Pollard's material -- "to trade for people they wanted to get out," including Jewish scientists working in missile technology and on nuclear issues. Pollard's spying came at a time when the Israeli government was publicly committed to the free flow of Jewish emigres from the Soviet Union. The officials stressed the fact that they had no hard evidence -- no "smoking gun," in the form of a document from an Israeli or a Soviet archive -- to demonstrate the link between Pollard, Israel, and the Soviet Union, but they also said that the documents that Pollard had been directed by his Israeli handlers to betray led them to no other conclusion.

High-level suspicions about Israeli-Soviet collusion were expressed as early as December, 1985, a month after Pollard's arrest, when William J. Casey, the late C.I.A. director, who was known for his close ties to the Israeli leadership, stunned one of his station chiefs by suddenly complaining about the Israelis breaking the "ground rules." The issue arose when Casey urged increased monitoring of the Israelis during an otherwise routine visit, I was told by the station chief, who is now retired. "He asked if I knew anything about the Pollard case," the station chief recalled, and he said that Casey had added, "For your information, the Israelis used Pollard to obtain our attack plan against the U.S.S.R. all of it. The coordinates, the firing locations, the sequences. And for guess who? The Soviets." (boldface mine - Ronin)Casey had then explained that the Israelis had traded the Pollard data for Soviet emigres. "How's that for cheating?" he had asked.

The game just changed today! The Russians are saying, in no uncertain terms, that they too will maintain a military presence in the Middle East to defend their interests.

They are an effective counterweight to the unholy US/Israeli alliance that jeopardizes everyone's safety. Now that Russia is willing to meddle in the world's affairs as the US has been doing for decades, their boys will start coming home in body bags just as they did during the Afghan War a quarter of a century ago. Ironic, isn't it?

But then again, Russia doesn't fight politically correct wars so maybe they'll dispense with the PC and just let it rip; no pretense of fighting a "humane war" - just kill anything that moves and deal with the political fallout later. After all, they've garnered a fair amount of leverage on the global political scene given the number of civilians killed by US forces in previous "engagements". Let them have their time patrolling the Middle East. They'll soon realize it's a dead end and run with their tails between their legs like so many other aspiring empires have done before, including the US.

The Middle East is hopelessly mired in religious zealotry and superstition. The Israelis have a powerful lobby that still seems in the ascendant, if only temporarily, and their incestuous relationship with government and its Right Hand Man, MIC, will insure that this idiotic desert pissing contest culminates in some sort of mass munitions depleting event or a protracted proxy war of US vs. Them - Russia, China and hardline Islamists against the US, Israel and any other country that wishes to opportunistically hock its wares in a time of conflict. Either way, too many people have too much at stake for a lasting peace to take hold. War it must be...

So what.  Russian advisors have already been in Syria and they have been supplying Assad with all kinds of munitions including additional Hind helicopters and other munitions.   Only reason that Assad is still in power is the air superiority that his forces have almost over the entire country especially in ground-to-air support from his Russian supplied helicopters.

Basically a repeat of Afghanistan in the 80s except the terrain in Syria is much less challenging for engaging in offensive action.  Turkey is playing the role of Pakistan and is a safe haven and key supply depot for the anti-Assad forces with plenty of help from the Turkish gov't.  You have plenty of Arab money from the Gulf states and religious fighters flowing through Turkey into Northern Syria.

The only thing that has happened is that the US hasn't gone full bore and given the various anti-Assad forces supplies of vast mobile anti-to-anti guided missles.  Don't even need a full no-fly zone over Syria by NATO forces.  That only happened in Afghanistan in the early phases due to Charlie Wilson and other who basically ran their own covert operation under the nose of the CIA.  I am sure the Iranians and the Russians andwould have very strong reactions though to the US supplying the anti-Assad forces with those munitions though.  It would certainly escalate things up another leve from what is now a low-grade civil war between internal factions with external suppliers into one where you open a much broader can of worms.

Obummer was sure trying to give the anti-Assad (AlQaeda)forces the weapons they wanted.

From Libya via Turkey to Syria..

He must have doubled crossed AlQaeda in Libya, hence the Benghazi attack.

Maybe he welshed on payment after the MANPADS were delivered.

Remind me what crime that is for aiding and succoring the enemy in wartime(GWOT).

I know its a capital offense.

Things changed because Russia previously acknowledged its Syrian interests and a desire to protect them by insuring the continuity of the Assad regime. However, those actions did not explicitly demonstrate that they were taking a more permanent seat at the ME table, it merely demonstrated that they were not going to roll over and see their naval presence eradicated in Syria. Sending warships to sit astride Gaza and Israel where political tensions are even more heightened seems a bit more aggressive and assertive, don't you think? In effect, they are now introducing themselves into a situation that was, heretofore, not of terrible concern to them other than taking some pleasure in watching the US turn it into one interminable clusterfuck at our own financial, military and political expense. It is indeed alot more aggressive - especially if they decide to defend supply ships en route to Gaza.

It looks to me like Russia is gearing up for Charlie Sheen's War, not Charlie Wilson's War...

...Winning...

Russians have been long-term players in the Middle East in just about every country in one way or another except Saudi Arabia since WW2.  They sent a few surface ships which limited offensive capabilities as a show of force.  They change squat in terms of the current conflict there since all of the arms are either coming via land over the Turkish/Jordanian borders.

What matters is that Russia continues to supply Assad with munitions replenishment especially for his helicopters and air-to-ground missles.

Now if one of those GRAD missiles just happens to get fired at the Russkies from, say, the West Bank - who's to say who did the shooting?
