Foodstamps Soar By Most In 16 Months: Over 1 Million Americans Enter Poverty In Last Two Months

Tyler Durden's picture

And we thought last month's delayed foodstamp data was bad. The just reported foodstamp number for September was a doozy, with 607,544 new Americans becoming eligible for foodstamps, as a record 47.7 million Americans are now living in poverty at least according to the USDA. The monthly increase was the highest since May 2011, and with August's 421K new impoverished America, over 1 million Americans made the EBT card their new best friend. It is unclear just which atmospheric phenomenon will get the blame for this unprecedented surge in poverty, which comes at a time when the pre-election economic data euphoria was adamant that the US economy was on an escape velocity to utopia. Instead what we do know is that in August and September, over three times as many foodstamp recipients were add to the economy as jobs (324,000). We also know that with the imminent impact of Sandy, which will send foodstamp recipients soaring, it is now looking quite possible that the US may end 2012 with just over a mindboggling 50 million Americans living in absolute poverty and collecting the $134.29 average monthly benefit per person, instead of working. Welcome to the recovery indeed.

Individual Americans on foodstamps:

Foodstamps at the household level rose to a record 24 million:

Aggregating foodstamp, disability and nonfarm payrolls data shows that since the start of the Depression in December 2007, 21.8 million Americans have shifted more or less permanently to the entitlement line, even as the US still has to generate 4.4 million jobs just to break even.

And the same shown on a monthly basis:

Put another 2 or 3 million there and there you have Obama giving orders to Bernanke to stop printing electrons.

At this rate, soon there will be 1 in 6 Amerikans dependent on EBT/SNAP from benevolent BigGov for their daily sustenance, and 1 in 3 Amerikans (or a cool 1/3 of the population) dependent on (or at least drawing) SSI payments, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, heating/utility assistance, aid to families with dependent children and a myriad of other government programs for the mere basic, necessities.

ooops....we're already there...

An OT p.s. -

Do not fret, for China will save the global economy (allegedly...again).

After all, it's not as if China's trade balance didn't SHRINK BY 40% FROM THE PRIOR MONTH, BITCHEZ!

Joe Weisenthal was just reporting last night that China's economy is ON FIRE once again!

12-09 22:39: Chinese Trade Balance (USD)(Nov) 19.63bln vs. Exp. 26.85bln (Prev. 32bln)

Chinese Trade Balance (USD)(Nov) 19.63bln vs. Exp. 26.85bln (Prev. 31.99bln, Rev. 32,05bln)

- Exports (Nov) Y/Y 2.9% vs. Exp. 9.0% (Prev. 11.6%)
- Imports (Nov) Y/Y 0.0% vs. Exp. 2.0% (Prev. 2.4%)
- China Jan-Nov Iron Ore Imports 670mln tons, up 8.2% on year.
- China November seasonally adjusted exports rise 3.8% on year; rise 3.2% on month.
- China November seasonally adjusted imports fall 0.3% on year; fall 6.6% on month.

Update details:

- This numbers are disappointing particularly the export number as China relies heavily on exports. This may signal some dropping demand for Chinese goods. [**No shit, really?**]

Ruh-Roh, when American stop buying cheap, Chinese shit, buckle up.

Maybe the plan is to switch to the EBT card as the official currency of the US once the critical mass is reached. The tipping point would be when Walmart shortly reports that their sales from EBT has exceeded cash/credit card sales.

Get the word out -- enrolling in SNAP is your patriotic duty! I can visualize a JP Morgan TV advertisement styled like US Army exhorting everyone to enroll.

Not to mention starvation, desperation and evaporation. Of confidence.

JohnG's picture

That's exactly what I mean.  Starvation.  When it comes down to "I get some food for my kids or they and I die," they'll be ready to kill for it.  That happens and there really is no choice to be made.  Either you get some food, or die trying.  Either way, you'll probably die, but so what???  That is real desparation.

Harbanger's picture

Govt's always have lingering authority even when their system is in "collapse", look around at the present examples.  There's always going to be a line somewhere for relief food.  More people will die fighting for that than anything else.

Food Stamp recipients: the modern day Cargo Cultists.

blunderdog's picture

What's the POINT in beating up the poor in the middle of a massive global depression?  Do you think all the broke-ass farmers in the '30s were Cargo Cultists too?

Poor people are never going to "go away."  And massive depressions (and regular recessions) are a regular characteristic of our economic system.

Whoever it is who deserves the scorn in a case like this, it certainly isn't the poor bastards who never participated meaningfully in getting us here.  They're just along for the ride engineered by bankers and implemented by politicians.

Bitches rioting and destroying their neighborhood is not open warfare.  The first wave of riots will be nice.  When they realize the state is overwhelmed and they can't go back home or call for help, the long lost nature of man will find it's place again.  That's when the fun begins.

Sounds like they are getting a wee bit close to divine wrath:

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents; 5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: 6 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter. 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. 8 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

In the future, Christianity will finally be classified as the mental disease it has always been.

Verily I say unto you...  (just kidding GMad, I have no iron in this fire) ;p (but I was well versed in 'Christinanity in my yute.)

btw I'm pretty sure Jeremiah is from the Jewish Bible aka the Old we'd have to include Judaism in the mental disease category as well.

As an aside something I've always wondered...since 'God's chosen people' were initially represented by twelve tribes, how did it all boil down to be all about only one of those tribes(Judah)?

To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear [is] uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with [him that is] full of days.
And their houses shall be turned unto others, [with their] fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD.
For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one [is] given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

I saw a number on the web today. All the benefits Obam people get adds up to about $61,000 a year.  Note that this is essentially tax-free so that would be about $95,000 for the average working person.  Note this does not include free ObamaPhones.

Watauga's picture

And that almost certainly does not include all of the free education costs, from pre-K through however many years of college we pay for before they finally are allowed to flunk out.  I figure that by sending my children to private schools (we live where they could not attend public schools with any sense of safety and security), we paid for the private schools, the kids at the private school who were freebies, the public schools, State-funded colleges, the out-of-State colleges my kids attended, and the financial aid that pushed so many unqualified students into college.  So, at least half of my education payments went NOT to my children, but to OTHER children.  Throw the value of free school, K-college, and you are well over $100K per beneficiary.

GMadScientist's picture

Good thing some of those public school kids end up paying more taxes than you do!

Calculated_Risk's picture

And your education came from???

And was it free to educate you? Wait, whom paid for that?!

Now your bitching cause you picked a shitty hood to live in and had to truck your kids elsewhere.

Alexandre Stavisky's picture

When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?’ He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, ‘Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, ‘There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?’ Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, ‘Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.’ So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, ‘This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.’ When Jesus realised that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

The system must be flawed (obviously).  A system in harmony with the creation of the earth has enough and more for all.  Man's interdiction and seeking of authority over many, by furnishing for some, by plundering all, will come to an dark end.  Ever is the struggle between the garden of eden (done by wise and skilled) and the thorns, thistles, tribulations of the lower order of space we inhabit.

Men exist on bread, but live by mannah.

But who was the guy who went into to the temple and smacked around the money changers (FRB) aka vampire squid Goldman Sachs of the day?

Wasn't it that Jesus fellow?

Point of fact: Jesus wouldn't have cared, but for the fact they were IN the temple.

You are the master of uninformed comments today, GMS.  I'm pretty sure you don't know a whole lot of what the Bible actually says, in context.

smiler03's picture

You don't need to know "the bible" at all. Those who quote it though are invariably mentally weak. It applies to all religions. Self perpetuating nonsense for the feeble minded who then brainwash the next generation.

What amuses me most is that you Christians (the majority religion in the US) are the largest flock of sheeple there is.
