"Better Off On Benefits"

Tyler Durden's picture

There is "no point" earning less in a minimum wage job is how Leanna Broderick - 20-year-old mother of two - justifies the benefits she claims adding that "she is better off on benefits" and would not get a job unless she could continue her luxury lifestyle, which includes designer outfits, holidays abroad, clubbing, lunches out and expensive gifts for her daughters Zelekah, two, and Zakirah, one. The UK's Daily Mail reports that Leanna saved GBP2,500 (~USD4,000) last year while living on GBP15,480 (~USD25,000) which she intends to spend on iPads and gold earrings for her kids - adding that "This way, taxpayers know I'm raising two well-brought-up kids." However, all is not rosy in Leanna's house as she fears next year may not be so lavish because of Government benefits cuts. "I'm not against the cuts, but only if the Government helps me find a job," she said, "In the meantime, I’ll stay on benefits and get as much as I can out of it."

Via The Daily Mail:

While many families are worrying about how to afford Christmas this year, one jobless single mother has revealed she receives so much in benefits she has £2,000 to spend on designer gifts, clothes and partying.

Mother-of-two Leanna Broderick plans to buy 20 presents for each of her children, including Burberry and Ralph Lauren outfits, iPads and gold jewellery.

The 20-year-old, who has never worked, claims nearly £15,500 a year in state handouts.

She claims she is better off on benefits and would not get a job unless she could continue her luxury lifestyle, which includes designer outfits, holidays abroad, clubbing, lunches out and expensive gifts for her daughters Zelekah, two, and Zakirah, one.

‘Last year, I saved £2,500 and my kids had 50 presents each, including Burberry and Ralph Lauren clothes and dolls, DVDs and CDs.

This year, I’ve saved £2,000 and they’ll get 20 presents each, including iPads and a new Disney-themed bedroom to share, with designer wall art and bed linen,’ she said.

She is also buying gold earrings for Zelekah, who has pierced ears, and keeping £300 for the sales and £150 for a New Year’s Eve outing.

Miss Broderick, who left school at 16 with no GCSEs, said: ‘I don’t care if people get annoyed. I don’t take advantage, I just choose to save – it’s smart.’

She said there was ‘no point’ earning less in a minimum wage job and having to pay for childcare on top.

After becoming pregnant at 17 with her on-off 23-year-old boyfriend, Miss Broderick was allocated a temporary three-bed council house.

When Zelekah was eight months old she considered working in care, but then became pregnant again by the same man.

Now split from the girls’ father, she has a new two-bedroom council flat in Croydon, South London, with a garden, which is paid for by her £111 weekly housing benefit – part of £1,290 a month total claim.

She said: ‘I didn’t want to miss out on my kids’ childhoods or have someone else raise them. I’m not one of those girls who gets pregnant for the benefits.’

The money for Christmas comes from the £250 she saves each month, which she said shows she is ‘really responsible’.

She adds: ‘Anyone who thinks people on benefits don’t deserve nice things is talking rubbish. I work 24/7 as a mother.

This way, taxpayers know I’m raising two well-brought-up kids.’

But she admits Christmas might not be so lavish next year because of the Government’s benefit cuts.

‘I’m not against the cuts, but only if the Government helps me find a job,’ she said.

In the meantime, I’ll stay on benefits and get as much as I can out of it.’

Good for her, actually. She sounds like a well-reasoned person and if her daughters are doing better on the dole, then she should lean that way.

It's not her fault.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

fonzannoon's picture

I completely agree. She certainly did not make the rules. But she is maximizing her situation under the rules. Can't blame her.

Iocosus's picture

She's 20 years old with TWO kids. There ya go. Millions of Obama voters (cut of the same cloth as her) will get pretty "panicky" when Big Brother takes back the benefits.

fonzannoon's picture

I agree that no one made her become a mom. She thinks she is owed something for that. She is wrong there. But if we are going to argue about Unions and Banks raping the system this broad falls pretty low on the list. If the rules change and she is as sharp as she thinks she is she will adapt. If not she will be up shits creek. That's how it goes. But for now you can't blame her for playing her hand well.

Orly's picture

She has already shown adaptation in living to the maximum according to the rules. Right, fonz, if she can't re-adapt, then she's done. And her daughters, too.

Iocosus's picture

Most people, according to the government's inflated poverty line, qualify for some form of benefits. Why is this so? Because a population dependent on government is powerless. You will be told what to eat, drink, what to wear, what is right and what is wrong, and lastly, you will be told when to die. Your God-given rights become government- given rights.

Don't forget being told for whom to vote.

Oquities's picture

sounds lke the definition of an amoral leech. you have low expectations of people. sad.

Northern Lights's picture

I think she should be more concerned if things go bad. When the food runs dry out, those 2 kids she's got are gonna look mighty tasty after they're cooked on a spik.

NidStyles's picture

I don't think we can assume anything about what she thinks. It's more likely that she saw an opportunity after having two trophies, so she took it. Despite people being rational most of the time, they still tend to do the most time expedient thing possible with the most return possible.

Pants McPants's picture

I agree with you and Orly. While I can't fault folks for getting upset with someone like Leonna (sp), her actions definitely support your above conclusion.

Who is living better off the system?

He deals the cards. She plays them.

blunderdog's picture

That one rip-off by Corzine would've paid 10,000 Leannas for 10 years each.

But you're asposed ta hate HER 'cause she's BLACK and HAD SEX out of wedlock.

Real life is just another horror movie. Most of the audience hasn't got a CLUE why the badguys always get away, but for damn sure they know why the victims had to die.

Burr's 2nd Shot's picture

A society that enables this behavior leads to the pillage by the banks, unions, politicians, etc.

How could one reasonably expect this woman to be diligent in recognizing and protesting theft and fraud when she is a practitioner and beneficiary?

nmewn's picture

Pretty low on the list? Its the same fucking thing!

The only thing different is the amount of dollar/pound signs involved...its brazen legalized theft.

How do we expect to change the top when the bottom is doing the same thing? Well fuck it then, let it burn, throw another log on the fire.

fonzannoon's picture

Who is changing anything? It's over. Way over. Now we sit here and watch the clock tick by. I wish, as you said, we could call the whole thing off. But we are both going to sit here and watch it burn. This is trivial. This post was thrown up here to get a bunch of different factions throwing shit at each other, when in reality, it is the same thing. But this chick is a pawn in the game as opposed to the bankers who make and change the rules at their whims. I know you don't make much room for grey areas, and I respect you for it....I think there is a bit here. But we are arguing about this on the deck of the titanic. It's just to pass the time.

nmewn's picture

"I know you don't make much room for gray areas..."

Correct, I don't.

If a person can't resolve to help themselves and see the immorality and unethical behavior within themselves, there is absolutely nothing I can or will do for them.

She's a parasite...there is no difference.

fonzannoon's picture

She pretty much admits she is. The system enables it. If the system breaks down she better have one helluva plan B.

"there is absolutely nothing I can or will do for them.

Not true. We all end up kicking in so this asshole can buy her kids an ipad for Christmas while the rest of us pinch pennies. We pretty much don't have a choice. The reset can't come soon enough. If ever.

nmewn's picture

You can do whatever you want, I have choices. As do we all.

But it is interesting to me, that some would delegate another entity to feed and clothe her & her's, instead of taking her (and them) into their own home to do it themselves.

Out of sight, out of mind? ;-)

fonzannoon's picture

I don't have the choice of not paying taxes. I don't have the choice to not contribute to a social security system that will be gone long before I go to cash my chips in. I never delegated any entity to do anything for anyone in principle. But in reality that is what is happening. It's not sustainable. Not a chance.

nmewn's picture

"I don't have the choice of not paying taxes."

Yes, you do.

fonzannoon's picture

I knew you were heading there. I am not down arrowing you by the way. But if you are not paying taxes you should be giving a lot less of a shit about how this chick is being subsidized by those that do.

I hate being dragged into this nonsense. Who should I hate more? The union gangs (federal) that raise my property taxes to subsidize their pensions?? The Corzines? This chick and a whole bunch more like her who's kids will apparently dress and celebrate the holiday's a lot better than mine?

Let it burn.

infinity8's picture

This has been a really good thread .. . I like both of you and can relate to both sides of the argument.. This is why, really, I keep coming back to ZH.

*edit: i didn't up or down either of you.

fonzannoon's picture

i try to listen to nmewn more than talk to him. he knows his shit. he also does not compromise his principles in any way. i too often rationalize things. the core of his point is solid while i am using a sliding scale here.

infinity8's picture

Seriously man, look at some of the upthreads and downthreads from here. People are getting thought-less and testy. I've been around here for a minute and, probably for the most part don't say much. Seems to me that the various articles/topics get nit-picked, chopped down and analysed pretty thoroughly (and quckly) around here. Sometimes I have smart-ass day and feel like I want to throw my $.02 in but, mostly not. I do, however, appreciate the ongoing, good discussions here.

Rogue Trooper's picture

Good observation infinity8. I've been on this site 2 yrs 30 odd weeks. It's getting way more tense, more angry, is this a sign if the times? The are many more newbees on the site which is understandable considering ZH's success. However, I sense a lot of folks are just finding this way too hard to accept. Unless you have already accepted that this game/system is over then you will feel anger and denial if, for example, for rooted for the 'Blue" team and find that your chosen one Obama is complete and utter fraud.

The same applies for the 'Red' team. Afterall, Obama is Bush III.

Nothing can stop this train wreck and it's deeply effecting people. At a simplistic level it's often better to just not no your fate. Otherwise the feeling is no different than being told you have a terminal illness but not knowing if you've got three months or ten years.

We are at the point of 'let's get this fucking over with and see if we make it to the other side'.

Looking forward to this useless eater and her larva's corpses stinking up some inner city apartment soon when the currency shock happens and the store is empty.

This is not symbiosis or even charity. Its parasitism

you will be bankrupt, with all your property confiscated for taxes and your business will fail before her benefits will ever be cut off.

don't you see you are the wage slave, and if you quit who cares the federal reserve will just buy another trillion of t-bills, and away her check will go.

i know the example is britain, but same, same

Karlus's picture

You dont understand what I am saying. Currency crisis. As in people dont take worthless fiat. How are "her benefits" going to be disbursed when govt script is no longer accepted. Imagine trying to pay a farmer, or a truck driver with Zimbabwae notes...wont happen. They will surely take something else of worth. What will these eaters have to barter with? Their votes will not matter to anyone anymore.

Sandy and Katrina are mere examples of how our govt will respond. Or not respond.

Go look at the russian currency crisis or any other historical shock. The govt can kick the can printing all they want. They can issue a "New Dollar" with one new valued at 10000 "old" dollars. They can put in price controls. All of the old reindeer games.

Its not an "if" its a "when." Are you ready? Or does your normalcy bias preclude any of that crazy talk?

sorry just a little testy, since i've worked more than 30 years, built a business with hard work and stress, since children were grown (all care, education, wants, needs, etc fully taken care of and paid for) have taken about 1 one week vacation in last 7 years. and it looks like the next four years will look exactly like the last four.

so i have some gold, stones, guns, ammo, food, and water stored away. do i have to go through all that, just because of bankers and bullshit like this parasite?

vast-dom's picture

yes you fucking winy bitch you may just have to go through all of it. and so your geriatric ass may live a bit longer than those worse prepared, but in the end we are all gonna be EQUAL bitches!

when the rubber meets the road, i'll do fine. my whine is just a lament against the necessity of going galt in my most productive years.

ZeroAvatar's picture

Ummm, in your case, I think "some are more equal than others" applies here.

Karlus's picture

Storm - They do not want equality, they want some sort of Django fantasy of revenge. Poke the bear enough and he will wake.

So long as people are making their Lexus leases and shopping at the mall, all is well until, right up to the moment that it is not.

These social justice types dont understand that this will not last. They have honestly just not thought it through. They believe that this is "their time" and "suck it up, payback is a bitch." They do not have even the most basic understanding of productivity or savings or even survival.

And yes, unfortunately we do get to go through this. Because we made some mistakes around what opportunity means and a misunderstanding of what fairness means. Our political system is polluted not by people wanting to offer their service or doing their duty, but by men who want power.

The good news is Civil War Two: Electric Boogaloo will be over very quickly and most likely not many shots will be fired.

See, the cities and urban areas have this funny dependency on food. Consider Manhattan for instance. 12MM people in the metroplex (or maybe more, dont remember). If each one eats two tomatoes a week ('maters to the other poster here) then that is 24 million tomatoes that need to be grown and shipped or trucked in. Every week. Think about everything else they eat. Watermellons and etc.

Its simply a matter of cutting off the food. Or if the food cuts itself off. These people are three meals away from utter chaos.

So yeah, if you have food, water, guns and some smarts, you will survive "the event." Things will rebuild afterwards, but it will get a little dicey in the interim.

Put your money on yourself and you will always win.

I can't and wont explain it to the jew/AA or whatever he thinks he is. His goal is only to kill the golden goose, but because his kind "did not build this" they certainly cannot inherit it.

The backlash they are building will be swift and fierce.

Parrotile's picture

I remember reading (hardcopy, pre-Internet era, when we used to do a strange thing called "read books") that if you are able to survive autonomously for one month you are better off than 30% of the population: Two months - better off than 50% of the population, and so on up to 12 months - which excluded 80% of the population (so even in the 80's there were those who were prepared, and who had a strategic plan!)

This was in the 1980's, in the UK (where productive gardening was a very popular hobby - many leased allotments as well as gardens to grow their own vegetables).

Fast forward 30 years: Melbourne Australia. Everyone has big (economically useless and water-guzzling) lawns, the majority have swimming pools. No-one has any productive gardens (too much trouble / wildlife problems / uses too much water (but watering the "trophy lawns" is a different matter)).

Wonder how much the survival percentages in that old book have changed in our "far more sophisticated" Society?

XitSam's picture

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”
