4th Amendment Over: Public Buses Adding Microphones To Record Conversations

Believe it or not the article itself is actually a lot worse than even the title implies. These microphones are in many cases being coupled with cameras in order to gain an even greater level of surveillance. All with grants from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Now honestly, does anyone really think this is for Al Qaeda? This is a great follow up to my piece from last week titled: Coming to Your Car: Mandatory Black Boxes That Record Everything.

Transit authorities in cities across the country are quietly installing microphone-enabled surveillance systems on public buses that would give them the ability to record and store private conversations, according to documents obtained by a news outlet.
The systems are being installed in San Francisco, Baltimore, and other cities with funding from the Department of Homeland Security in some cases, according to the Daily, which obtained copies of contracts, procurement requests, specs and other documents.
The systems use cables or WiFi to pair audio conversations with camera images in order to produce synchronous recordings. Audio and video can be monitored in real-time.
In Eugene, Oregon, the Daily found, transit officials requested microphones that would be capable of “distilling clear conversations from the background noise of other voices, wind, traffic, windshields wipers and engines” and also wanted at least five audio channels spread across each bus that would be “paired with one or more camera images and recorded synchronously with the video for simultaneous playback.”

The MBTA, who just raised fares on Boston and MA riders by more than 22% in some cases, plans to install 400+ cameras on buses and at transit station across the state after recieving $40mil+ from the DHS.
The funding also helps pay for the random bag checks that the Transit Police and TSA do at Train Stations (Union must love those OT shifts!).
It's a forced spending on resources that could be used to actually HELP the public, not try to protect it from a invisible boogey man.

Aside from ultra-dense areas like the Northeast, you aren't usually getting too many middle class folks on the bus these days. I try to use the light rail in my city when possible but it's pretty shitty considering it will only access very specific things. And the folks on there are a step up in income from the folks that use the bus because they HAVE to. What kind of crimes will they be committing? Drug offenses? And there is a carrot: while you accept to be monitored around, it means lower insurance costs as the insurer can provide new contractual lines (the importance of the contract in 'americanism) to lower the fees if you comply with a set of 'risk diminishing' behaviours.
And once again, as free marketers put it, nobody forces you to take such a contract with an insurer.

Because the private sector, corporations and banks own the government and dictate what the government will do, the fourth amendment is abridged via bribery, excuse me campaign contributions. By the Constitution, marketers, insurers cannot violate the Fourth Amendment. Are you contending that the Government cannot violate the Fourth Amendment, but that is is ok for private industry to do it?
All of this is going to end badly.

Liberty isn't dead, nor is the 4th Amendment. It's just being rolled around in the dirt a little. If unionzed government workers are going to listen to those tapes, demand overtime, demand COLA increases, and demand better benefits, it will just bring the revolution on quicker.
