That is another thing that irks me. EBT cards are easily disguised as debit cards, whereas food stamps are clearly that. EBT cards have a dual purpose of lowering the cost of distributing handouts as well as removing the stigma of being on welfare. This country could use some more stigma.

I used to be nice to homeless people but once you get to know them after a bit, you realize why a lot of them are homeless. Some are just down on their luck and have been dealt a bad set of cards. That's the astonishingly small minority of them.
Most of them are assholes who have fucked over all their friends, have fucked over their family, and are fucks. That's the majority, and it's why they are homeless. They have fucked over everybody that would have helped them, and after a point, people respond with FUCK YOU then, and they end up FUCKED. Then I have to hear you fucking asshoels lecture people about how we should feel sorry for these fucks and how we're mean and cruel to these poor innocents. Well, asshole, you go ahead and take some direct intervention for a little while, and after you've done that, you bleeding heart fucking hypocrite, who has never dealt with these people, you talk to me then.
You'll have the same viewpoint I do after a point and I'll be astonished if you don't, but my bet, is you will never ever get involved. You'll just bitch and moan that other people won't. You'll expect the government to put a gun to my head and force my "help". You know, extort my work and effort from me.

I only give to homeless who are missing limb(s). There is one I drive by his corner regularly and the poor fuckers gotta be 60 years old and has no legs. I buy him clothes and throw him a $100 every now and then. Aside from that my taxes are enough charity.
I never said they were not human. I said they are not all good stories gone bad, or that they are the victims of the system and we should spend tons of time rounding them up, giving them showers, and 3 square and they will become good citizens.
Back in the 70's and 80's the democratic government in MA closed the mental health facilities and just thought it would nice to mainstream these guys.
All of a sudden they are sleeping in the parks, attacking each other (rarely do they kill one of us) and otherwise living like the indigenous americans of 350 years ago.
I have spent a lot of time volunteering at a local shelter and worked with a health care organization that serves the folks on the street.
They are human. Most are nice enough. But again, it is a tough, dog-eat-dog world and bum fights are common and brutal. If they have an iPhone, they stole it. And they stole it to sell it--or the phone calls on it--for drugs, booze, or food...in that order.
There really is not an answer--most of them got kicked out of their homes by their own relatives who were sick of their addictions, thefts, and arrests. The government can do next to nothing. They do not want to be "fixed."
And so, yes I know the ones who want to get jobs don't smell like piss--and they are not on the streets too long. Those folks can find a shelter that will work with them because they are not junkies or thieves. Then they can find a job or public assistance that can get them housing.
So, the irony of my post is that the ones that smell like piss would not get a job, because they don't want jobs. Quite honestly, they just want to be left alone.
I lost my sympathy for most of them a long, long time ago. Yet, I still give the occasional bum a ten-spot out of white guilt. At least I know that bum will get a good rush tonight.
