Newtown Shooting: A Syndrome Of A Troubled Society?

Tyler Durden's picture

In a concerning shift of sentiment, a majority of Americans, based on a new WaPo-ABC poll, now see the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary as a sign of broader problems in society (as opposed to an 'isolated' incident). While there remains widespread - and intense - opposition to banning the sale of handgunds in general (though high-capacity ammo clip restrictions are just as broadly despised), from the 2007 Virgina Tech shootings to this year's Aurora theater massacre, the poll results below suggest societal problems are becoming ever more critical in our nation's thinking.

what did I call this years ago...Collective Point of Recognition

Interestingly, the Chinese also have a problem with homicidal rampages on schoolkids

LongSoupLine's picture

Now show me the overlay on how political and Fed economic "decisions" have created the "troubled society".

The focus on guns is fucking pathetic...

Hey, I have an idea...with the increase in forest fires let's ban all fucking trees. Wood is too fucking dangerous and needs to be fucking eradicated now.

WTFRLY's picture

We are headed for a society like Demolition Man.

Zap Powerz's picture

Isnt that a sign of a major societal problem?

Ghordius's picture

which leads to the questions: is a society troubled if nobody cares? or: can the Media lead a society to care?

OT: btw, a few of my friends have concocted a new idea for a partial weapon's ban: the individual retains the right to own arms - the authorities get the right to confiscate if it's not stored and locked away properly in a safety box or arms cabinet

of course this was after quite a lot of liquor, so nobody pointed out that the whole thing has a couple of issues with home searches and weapon's registration and so on

(seriously, do yourself and others a favour, store your arms intelligently)

Spastica Rex's picture

And maybe don't train and arm your crazy kids?

Ghordius's picture

I've seldom met a mother willing to admit that her kids are less than perfect, so it's a difficult judgment call that one

but my more conservative friends would immediately ask after the father figure for that "crazy" kid - with very non-PC side remarks of a woman having no business tending after kids and arms alone

asperger's is not crazy, btw

Spastica Rex's picture

I was being flip with "crazy."

I think America's love of guns is a bit sick, actually. I've always been comfortable with the idea of gun ownership, I'm the only person in my extended family who doesn't have one and doesn't hunt. I just don't. I love to eat what my cousin Gary shoots for me, however.

I'm off track.

Not everyone should be given a weapon and weapons training. Blind people, for example.

A gun isn't the solution to every problem.

More access to guns isn't the solution to every problem.

Jesus...  THE SYSTEM ALREADY HAS AN ANSWER FOR THIS...  it has nothing to do with necessary legislation...  if you fail to properly secure your firearms and someone takes them to commit a crime, guess what?  You're going to get sued.  This is how to properly deal with the situation...  let people police themselves through the risk of civil liability.  [and also another reason tort reformers are near sighted at best]

Spastica Rex's picture

The system failed.

They do on occasion, ya know.

MachoMan's picture

Absolutely...  and, although it shocks the shit out of most people, maybe a system's failures aren't necessarily the defining features...  maybe we might focus on the system's successes, no?  Maybe, just maybe, we can sit on our hands and not legislate something else in haste that ALWAYS ends in less liberty...

Spastica Rex's picture

As long as we're not religous about it.

The autism spike from the '90s is causing an increase of highly medicated young adults?

NotApplicable's picture

I was just discussing this aspect.

Bottom line. ALL actions have consequences.

In other news, one other group that should do well in light of this tragedy is the home-school movement. Where already established, I expect to see it gain a significant share, while other places might find a better reception where there were previously arguments over the lack of socialization of children.

After all, it's the only way to ensure your child's safety without having to beg the criminal class to do it for you.

exi1ed0ne's picture

Both my kids will/are homeschooled because:

1) Educational content is crap - more propaganda than anything.  Abe freed the slaves - HAHAHAHAHA!

2) Educational method is crap - rote memorization at the expense of critical thinking skills.

3) Educational oversight is crap - how many locker room cover-ups does it take people?!?

4) It's a fucking prison.  Compare your local school policies to your local PMITA prison.

5) Lets put all our kids in one location, with shit student to teacher ratios so less oversight for each kid, so that the pedos, whackos, and politicians know right where to go.

I refuse to outsource the most important project I'll ever have the priviledge of being involved with - raising my kids.

Randall Cabot's picture

Vaccines are certainly part of it but the big picture is more like this:

1) jew supremacists through the Frankfurt School, the mass media, the education system and the promotion of mass "multicultural" immigration degrade American culture and values because they believe it is "good for the jews".

2) A huge increase in the use of dangerous vaccines causes mental illmesses like autism amd Asperger's Syndrome in millions of people who will also be compromised into rootless loners and malcontents by the multicultural mayhem around them.

3) Prescribe known dangerous psychrotropic drugs to treat these menbtally ill rootless loners and malcontents.

4) Allow jew supremacist controlled Hollywood and TV and other enteertainment media to instill violent thoughts and tendencies into the minds of the troubled people

5) Apply a triggering signal like the Quentin Tarantino and Jamie Foxx Hollywood movie Django Unchained in which Jamie Foxx promotes the killing of "white folks" and then after the event observe jew supremacists like Bloomberg, Feinstein, Lieberman, Rendell and Weiner scream for gun confiscation.

Flakmeister's picture

If ever we decide that people with a "dubious" mental framework need to be insitutionalized on a societal level, I will insist that the criteria be such that you are included...

trav777's picture

he jumps to a lot of conclusions, but lands much closer to the truth than you'd like to admit...

Randall Cabot's picture

Are you denying that the Frankfurt School were jews? And that the controllers of the mass media, including TV and Hollywood, that have put the Frankfurt School's recommendations into practice are jews? And that other institutions promoting the Frankfurt School's recommendations like the advertising industry and the NEA are also controlled by jews And that leading jew supremacist politicians like Jacob Javitz and Emmanuel Cellar working with jewish organizations like the AJC and the ADL have been responsible for mass third world immigration, both legal and illegal?

Don't over tighten the chinstrap on your collander, you could cut off the blood flow to your brain....

orangedrinkandchips's picture

So this sick fuck and his entire family...(FAMILY DAY AT THE GUN RANGE!) are the ones that are responsible for the ban on guns.....

The gun wasnt sick in the head....The retard was fucked in the head.....

So, ban guns so that the next time a LAW=ABIDING PERSON, perhaps a teacher or someone, is NOT allowed to defend themselves against a perp who HAS A GUN ILLEGALLY AND IS GOING TO KILL YOU WHICH IS ILLEGAL.....

Why dont you just make them tie their arms behind their backs and let the gangbangers have the guns! cut to the chase!

Flakmeister's picture

If you think the guy was retarded, i.e. slow and mentally dull, you have no fucking idea what autism is...

unrulian's picture

thanks for the websters version...fucking retarded works for me

Flakmeister's picture

It usually does work for people that have closed minds... Hey! if the shoe fits...

unrulian's picture

thanks dickmeister, you are correct, in this case my mind is closed

More thrashing about for a simple answer to a complex tragedy.

If people believe they are upset about Sandy Hook, just wait until Bernanke's grand experiment fails; then they'll have something quite magnificent to mourn.

NotApplicable's picture

Thing is, it'll be known as WWIII.

Flakmeister's picture

Just wait until all the quasi-functional autistic kids in the pipeline grow up....

The US will be a shooting gallery and it won't be just gangs fighting over drug turf....

Spastica Rex's picture

I've been thinking a lot about the sacrosanct American idea that everyone with a disability needs to be integrated at every level of society in the least restrictive way. There are unintended consequences.

Flakmeister's picture

Tough question, but eugenics has such a bad name...

Maybe if we just dropped off every one that was not quite right in the middle of Death valley the problem would sort it;s self out on its own. You know, load them in a bus and guarentee that it runs out of gas...

We sure as hell couldn't have the goverment institutionalize them, that would imply redistribution of wealth and moreover, that would deny them their version of liberty and the pursuit of hapiness....

Spastica Rex's picture

Stuff is sure fucked up. Rats in a cage.

Well, like I've said before; maybe warp drive is just around the corner and we can all get to the real work of subduing alien worlds. And kicking alien ass.

To infinity, and beyond.

Flakmeister's picture

Reductio ad absurdum....

Equivalently, all paths are fraught with peril...

redguard's picture

if the aliens are aware of us they won't let our crazies (Hitler, Stalin, Mao[and what the hell it's zerohedge Churchill,

Eisenhower.])achieve that level of technology. If they exist we're probably, for their own safety, under quarintine.

But otherraces don't exist. We are the center of the universe and can do what ever we choose.

I say bring back ostracization colonies, escape from NY style.

Wall off a shithole like Detroit or Philly - they're toast already - and throw in the violent misfits who can't behave, get along or mind their own business. They get a handgun, a blanket and some MRE's - after that, they're on their own. No prison/industrial complex necessary to feed/clothe the inmates, no building maintenance.... just a handful of security gaurds policing the perimiter for escapees (even this could be automated). It's fair and compassionate. Colony members are amongst their peers and free to do whatever it is that motivates them and the rest of society is rid of the problem at very little cost. Win/win.

Flakmeister's picture

Oh goodie, Ghettos without the deathcamps...

A kinder gentler statism if you like...

Not poking fun at you, but the internal contradictions of society are coming full circle...

Penal colonies resulted in Australia.

I like Foster's beer.

I have 3 young kids in school and they are surrounded by the mainstreaming of autistic/asperger/adhd whatever and starting in elementary school they have been subject to violent outburst by these children either agianst other children or the teachers.   We had one "minder" of a specific child of a 2nd grader and he knocked her teeth out.   Maybe the pressure of mainstreaming isn't helping.  I know it doesn't help the other children fortunate enough not to be afflicted with these syndromes.

I know this won't be PC but I wonder if there is a correlation between autism etc.. and fertility specialist, in vitro or whatever.  I'm sure no one is allowed to ask that particular question and get an honest, unemotional response.  Maybe nothing there but there was certainly a quickness to correlate autism to vaccines.  The few children I know with this syndrome are indeed a product of in vitro which is what made me ask the question.  Not trying to be insensitive.  Just asking.

Flakmeister's picture

I have a number of nieces and nephews afflicted, there is no clear culprit. At least one will have to be institutionalized because of violence (not that he was ever going assimilate into society)

The connection with vaccines has been shown to be completely false... In fact the author of the famous article retracted the paper....

notadouche's picture

Yes I saw that but there are many that still believe the vaccine theory.

I have 1 nephew that is "diagnosed" adhd at 5 years old and on meds and no fertility problems involved.  I've seen him be violent when he's not the center of attention.  No remorse.  Has a permanent minder at school.  No discipline from parents.  They had him but letting grandparents raise all day everyday but not allowed to be disciplined per parents instuctions.  I would define him more as a narcissistic sociopath in the making.  He doesn't trust me and funny thing is he never misbehaves in front of me.  Now if it were uncontrollable then I have to ask myself why the good behavior in front of me?  Makes me question role of discipline or lack thereof in many cases of ADD or ADHD.  Now not speaking of autism, etc... in this case and hate to generalize all ADD ADHD cases.  But diagnosing 5 year old child that has never been told no with any consequences seems a bit of a reach.  Of course doctors affirmed no disciplining either, just positive affirmation.

"It's good you wish them into the corn Jimmy.  It's really good."

Twighlight Zone.

Spastica Rex's picture

I was in public education for 20 some years - as a teacher, a principal, and a state bureaucrat.

Over the years, I was involved in much policy talk and implementation around ADD/ADHD/Etc. To a great extent, much of what is dealt with as pathology is really just elements of the normal range of human behavior - IMO.

That is a very unpopular viewpoint in mainstream public education management.

As many are aware, there are huge profits to be gained medicating children. Many may not be aware, however, that there are also huge profits to be gained in establishing and staffing state systems and programs to deal with behavior as pathology. A majority of the funding for this comes from the Feds.

notadouche's picture

Well I know we better start finding the solutions instead of just treating the symptoms.  But treating the symptoms is totally the American Way.   Oddly you take 1 pill for one thing then you have to take 3 more pills to offset the affects of taking the one.  Makes a lot of sense to me.

Flakmeister's picture

There is no profit in finding solutions....

mjcOH1's picture

There's a pretty good correlation to single parenting.  Sometimes we don't like the answers.
