Wal-Mart Stores Sell Out Of Guns

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday, when we described the unprecedented surge in gun sales in the aftermath of the Newtown massacre, we said that "what is most ironic, is that it is precisely the fear of forced, unilateral rejection, by either or all three branches of government, of the original constitution and its various amendments that has Americans scrambling into gun stores. And thus the closed loop nature of the problem: by threatening to take away America's guns, the government is only exacerbating a problem that is steeped in 200+ years of history and is engrained deep in American psychology." It took about 24 hours to demonstrate just how counterproductive government intervention always is: as of this moment, Bloomberg reports, Wal-Mart, the biggest retailer in the US and the world, has stores in at least five states where guns are now completely out of stock.

With President Barack Obama endorsing sweeping gun restrictions in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, prices for handgun magazines are surging on EBay (EBAY) and semi-automatic rifles are sold out at many Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) locations.

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said yesterday that it would continue to sell guns, including rifles like the one used at Newtown, where 26 people, most of them children, were killed on Dec. 14. By contrast, Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. (DKS) suspended sales of similar guns at its more than 500 stores.

Searches of five kinds of semi-automatic rifles on Wal- Mart’s website showed them to be out of stock at stores in five states, including Pennsylvania, Kansas and Alabama. Wal-Mart doesn’t sell guns online, instead asking customers to input a zip code to see if their local store carries a specific weapon.

“We remain dedicated to the safe and responsible sale of firearms in areas of the country where they are sold,” David Tovar, a spokesman for Wal-Mart, said yesterday. He didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

Wal-Mart has about 10 modern sporting rifles, the gun industry’s term for firearms that look like an M-16 military rifle, listed on its website. The retailer removed a description and picture of the Bushmaster AR-15, which was the model used in Newtown, after the shootings.

Who benefits from the government's pseudo intervention? None other than the uber-wealthy Walton family.

The move may have helped as U.S. Wal-Mart stores posted their first gain in same-store sales in more than two years in October 2011. Wal-Mart doesn’t disclose how many guns it sells, though at an analysts’ meeting in October it said gun revenue gained 76 percent in the first half of this fiscal year. The chain advertised a Sig Sauer M400 as one of its Black Friday doorbusters last month, offering the rifle for $50 off at $867.

It gets worse: now that guns are transforming from a commoditized to a niche, collectible product, whose future is unclear due to what the government may or may not do, the supply, demand dynamics have shifted massively in favor of the side that pushes the equilibrium price higher (just so even central-planning economists understand this).

On EBay Inc.'s auction website, shoppers have recently bid up gun magazines. The current bid for four Glock handgun magazines, ammunition for one of the guns used at Newtown, is $118.37 compared with $45 on the day before the shooting. The bid for seven Glock magazines hit $201 on Dec. 17 from $71.01 before the massacre.

Gun buyers have flooded other firearms retailers too. The Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, North Carolina, racked up more than $1 million in sales yesterday for the best single-day performance since the store opened in 1959, according to Justin Anderson, director of online sales. At the top of shoppers’ lists was the Bushmaster AR-15, the model of rifle used at Newtown that sells for as much as $4,000 and had almost sold out, he said.

Revenue at one of the largest U.S. gun stores surpassed even the spike just after Obama was elected president in 2008, Anderson said in a telephone interview. Sales weren’t as robust when Obama was re-elected last month because the president hadn’t backed major new gun laws, he said.

While we have no interest in pursuing any of the ethical sides of this argument, we do know that the more the government intervenes, even if it is with the noblest intentions, the greater the adverse and negative fallout will be. And, in typical government fashion, the more it pushes to get its way (or the highway) the greater the tragic consequences result in a country which - by dint of simply what it is - has over 300 million weapons. Good luck and godspeed with any hopes of "controlling" them.

A French style mob action is definitely NOT the way to go. A better idea is an amicable separation of the red areas / blue areas. The ideological chasm cannot be bridged. Separate the assets and liabilities and each territory goes its own way.  Put 90 day migration buffer into place so red folks in blue areas can migrate, and vice versa.

As civilized individuals, we should propose a serious, civilized path ahead. A path based upon proven principles and the experience of wise men.

If the impulsive barbarians, more commonly known as today's liberals, attempt to impede our liberty, then and only then, shall we be impelled to defend our liberty with force.

An oldie but a goodie...

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950's, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.

We'll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We'll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute Imagine, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.

We'll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

I do not favor separation. My view is that the red states will "annex" the red states.

Non compliance will result in an embargo of food deliveries. The blue states in turn can embargo American Idol.

Good luck to them.

In the aftermath and new Constitutional Convention, only landholders can vote or alternately those that pay taxes.

F. Bastiat's picture

Certainly, the red states could potentially embargo agricultural supplies and energy, almot all of which is produced in red areas.  It would take substantially more organization in the red areas to band together, though. Currently there doesnt' seem to be a whole lot of obvious cooperation.

Logistics are critially important - those thinking ahead should perfect their distribution networks in red areas and move away from blue ones.

A currency crisis would probably the most likely pretext to impel a separation; I doubt the current crop of red-state Governors would have the guts to do it, though. With the exception of TX, of course.

The last election like the prior was totally rigged.  The RINO Dems destroyed the Tea Party and backed Obama.  Vote fraud was astronomical.

We have slavery now where people work hard to stay above water to have their money taken by parasites.  enough.

I want someone with a some breadth and depth instead of narrow, focused little special-interest type person ...

Or an attorney general who is going to go 'fast and furious' gun-running for the purpose of 2nd amendment 'repeal'.

Would that satisfy you?

Or, you want more 'left'?

We voted for Obama to ensure what is occurring now.

We love it when a plan comes together..

Michaelwiseguy's picture

We voted Obama because we knew he would expose himself and his agenda to the light of day, so we could politically assassinate him and his followers. And other reasons.

Personally I think he's a pretty cool guy, but his ideology remains the big issue.

F. Bastiat's picture

We're not there yet, IMO. There's still enough credit available so that no one's really feeling the pinch. The advantage, if you can call it that, of fiat currency is that is postpones all days of reckoning and all consequences into one final day of reckoning and consequences.

So, now's the time to build public opinion, make prudent purchases, and improve one's knowledge.  Eliminating or minimizing exposure to the fantasies and superstitions of the mass-image-media is especially prudent.

Prudence, discipline, and fortitude - orders of the day.

Just had a talk with my Mom-In-Law (sitting across the table from me). She's on Social Security and knows she has already been robbed and her kids are in the process of being robbed.

Wish I could say the same!  I have been in some heated discussions lately with my Mom, she thinks I have lost it!  She knows that DC is full of crooks and yet still thinks Obummer is going to help her!  So frustrating it is not funny!

See F. Bastiat's comments above, which I agree with.

At some point, we will have to realize everyone will not or cannot, be saved. However, I subscribe to the the thought that I will not become a recluse or push people away because they don't see what I see...especially family.

Whenever another bank implodes or is fined an non-obscene amount for the damage done, whenever another Corzine is exposed, whenever another green job bankruptcy is announced, whenever another welfare cheat is caught at a titty bar using EBT, just wink at her. She'll know.

There will be plenty of time for full blown toldja-so smugness, later ;-)

Nmewm...sorry to say I'm on my way out of FL. The tide turned here(just north of you), the influx of Public  pensioned retirees, Public parasites, and those damn NY/NJ'ites just ruined it. They are actually asking for the county to pay for their 'street lights', fixed price light posts in rural areas, because they are used to lights. Ruins the stars and why am I paying for it? Sky-rocketing property tax for services I don't and never will use, retired Public employees on fat pensions that complain that a neighbor put up a 12x20 shed, on 3 acres(approx. 120k sf.) while they skirt taxes by 'renting' cows for a couple months to get Greenbelt exemptions. Building Dept. stuck in the stone ages and the Property Appraiser that threatened me with back taxes because they failed to do their job, not me, them. My move is to a state with similar taxes(no income) and NO building department along with little local gov't oversight. The parasites insist the host will live forever, the host is like WTF?! Best of luck.

I have been dreaming of the day we just admit this aint working anymore and we peacefully go our separate ways and leave the libtards to their dreams of socialist utopia (Or Third World Banana Republic)

However peaceful our intentions may be, I would be willing to fight the tyranny with any means possible and hope to leave it better than we found it.

I just wish all my guns and ammo hadn't fallen into the same deep dark lake my phizz did. May be impossible to replace before the shitstorm goes full-on hurricane. Gonna be expensive to fill the safe back up.

And for those of you speaking of FNH, please take a close look at my avatar for my stamp of approval. I do miss my FNP45 Tactical...

I say we have a "Million Man Gun March" on Washington DC and clean out the riff raft occupying our federal government.

That would sure open up a lot of people's eyes.  And by "that," I mean when the feds use heavy weapons to cut down those million marchers.  Because that's what they'd fucking do, you know.

Where do you think DC is?  Iceland?

I stopped by one of the larger stores in my area (Scottsdale Gun Club) yesterday around 2PM -- there were about 12 staff on duty, and customers were lined up 3-4 deep on each person. I've never seen anything like that before. They have quite a bit of inventory and I've been checking online and I'm seeing stuff blip to "out of stock" every 20-30 minutes. Even things I wouldn't have expected (like a 6 round Nano, six guns to zero in two days.)

The reports I read indicate the murderer used two semi-automatic pistols with standard magazines, not an "assault rifle." While the murderer took the assault rifle with him, he left it in his car, and it was not used in the killings.

Odd then that the government is using this as an excuse to go after "assault rifles." Do you think it is a coincidence they are going after the weapons the military uses?

I wonder if the Nazis would have been so eager to throw all the Jews into concentration camps if they were all armed to the teeth with semi-automatic weapons.

Couldn't happen here? As I recall, we threw every Japanese american west of the Miss. river into a camp in 1942. Sure, we did not starve them, kill them, or use them for sick medical experiments, but we uprooted them and put them in camps behind barbed wire.

It's not the "Bill or Needs" or the "Bill of Wants," folks - it's the "Bill of Rights." The government wants to treat you as a potential hostile, something to be wary of, not as their sovereign. We are losing our freedom drip by drip. But I say everyone gets the government they deserve.

I will note that every adult male citizen in Switzerland has an assault rifle and is trained to use it. Most keep their weapons at home. In addition the geovernment subsidizes ammunition to encourage men to shoot and maintain their skills, and yet the homicide rate in the US is 14 time higher than in Switzerland.

Yep, stand corrected. Reports now claim three guns were taken into the school - two semi-automatic pistols and one AR type rifle, and that a shotgun was left in the car.

From Friday afternoon untill about 8:00 sunday morning all the news reports indicated 2 hand guns found at the scene and a Bushmaster A/R found in the car, then on Sunday the Chief Medical Examiner Dr. H Wayne Carver said  that the deaths can be attributed to the long rifle, which means it was the .223 Bushmaster.  Strange and peculiar./

Of note,

Vance Says Misinformation on Crime Being Posted on Social Media

Misinformation on the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, is being posted on social media websites, and that will be prosecuted, Lieutenant J. Paul Vance said in a televised briefing.

He said the last autopsy results on the shooting suspect and his mother will be reported this afternoon. Vance also said that they have not released a timeline of the events from Dec. 14 yet. Vance is with the Connecticut State Police.

The social media postings have been inaccurate, threatening, and people have been posing as the shooter and others and may be in violation of federal and state laws, Vance said.

Police officials said it’s much too early to begin to comment on when the children will return to Sandy Hook Elementary School.

( I belive I heard Paul say on Saturday that two pistols were found at the scene and a Bushmaster A/R found in the trunk of the suspects car, but don't quote me or Paul on that).
