The Octagon Of Oligarchy: Meet China's "Eight Immortals" - An Infographic

Tyler Durden's picture

America may have the Octogenarian (Oracle) of Omaha but China has the Octagon of Oligarchy: an octet of the families that run the world's (still) fastest growing, marginal economy, which by extension likely makes them the eight most powerful families in the world. So powerful, that Bloomberg has just released a series not only mapping out the various linkages and profiling said families but has appropriately dubbed them the "Eight Immortals."  In doing so it has revealed "the origins of princelings, an elite class that has been able to amass wealth and influence, and exploit opportunities unavailable to most Chinese. Bloomberg tracked 103 people – descendants including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and their respective spouses. The Immortals, now all dead, are revered in communist lore as revolutionary fighters who led China’s economic opening after Mao Zedong’s death.

The identities and business dealings of these families are often cloaked in secrecy because of state censorship and complex corporate webs. To document them, Bloomberg scoured thousands of pages of corporate filings, property records, official websites and archives, and conducted dozens of interviews from China to the United States, where many were educated and have at times made their homes. To read the related stories click here and here.

For those who can not be bothered to read the fascinating in depth series which will likely see Bloomberg blocked in China once again for the next several days, here is the full infographic breakdown:

If you add four more IM-mortals then you get one for each birth sign...

But then you'd have 50% more CON-nections. Ponder that.

In fact, ponder that in kilo or hundred-kilo ranges...

Chinese people are FOURTY-NINed.

My assertion is that leftist societies simply replace the old kings/emperors/czars, dukes, princes, etc. of the old monarchies with the modern equivalents under different names and often called "comrade". There is no real functional difference. The power is near absolute, based on nepotism, power and the favor of the monarch/autocrat. All things in leftist society still run by dictate.

Guess what, most Israelies have a hard time making ends meet. Are there Rothschilds etc.? Yes there are and perhaps disproportionally more Jews are billionaires than 'gentiles' but the average Jew is like the average non-Jew although a lot of Jew hating people would disagree with me because nothing works better to feel superior than having someone to blame for all the problems in the world.

A former colleague of mine, who is a non-practicing and atheistic Joo (Joo by birth and upbringing), and married to a Korean, insisted that "the KOREANS are the Joos of Asia." When I did not comment, or take the potential bait, but simply asked him what he meant by that, he listed a short list of attributes and values that make them rise to success in any culture in history, and that they pass these on to their children, to help them get to the top of the foodchain.

Does your former colleague really think that people object to Jews because they are successful?

For Koreans to be regarded as 'The Jews of Asia' they would need to steal someone elses country then persecute them relentlessly.

They would have to be so arrogant that all their neighbours hate them for their disgraceful treatment of those former land owners so that they need to build a wall around themselves to keep them out.

They would need to rely on the UN to legitimise the creation of their state then turn around and say that they don't give a shit what the UN says about sharing that state equitably with the original owners.

They would need to develope their own nuclear deterant then cry when their neighbours looked like they might want one to even things up.

They would need to create a state that practices apartheid in the same way as the glorious South Africans against those original owners.

They would need to totally infiltrate their best ally and spy on them while sucking them dry for cash and weaapons and then sucker them in to fight their wars for them against the same neighbours they can't get along with.

Then they could consider themselves 'The Jews of Asia'.

If not stfu.

You don't know what you are talking about.

China is planning to defend their territorial waters against Japanese, and everyone elses, encroachment.

The Chinese are dumping US Treasuries as fast as they can. They have liqudated 500 billion this year.

I am here now and amazed ZH is not blocked????? Every other site I visit in the states is blocked??

I can't even get to a hotmail account.

We did have lunch in an alley, six dishes, four beers and Chinese liquor  for about ten bucks. Right near the temple.

China is a great country. I went to the earthquake zone yesterday and they have rebuilt EVERYTHING. Even the foriegn aluminum plant, tunnels and a whole new town. All with donated money. A very resilient people.

Is Communist China (not to be confused with the Republic of China, on Taiwan) also planning on defending 'their' absurd territorial claims in the South China Sea, in areas that patently have NO connection or proximity to China whatsoever?  What next, claims on islands in the Indian Ocean?  Such claims would be no less ridiculous nor less egregiously blobbing-up.

PS: After your lunch of six crispy Szechuan puppies and four bear gall bladders, did you take a dump on the side of the nearest road like a good Chinese shitizen?  It is the patriotic thing to do, you know, plus cleaning it up makes work for all the displaced Tibetans who would otherwise starve after being evicted from their homeland.

Yes it appears they will be exercising their soveriegnty over their domain. The Chinese will be asserting their own Monroe, like, doctrine over the South China Sea as well as sending flotillas to the Persian Gulf. Taiwan just had an election and the new leader is pro China and Tiawan will remain, like Tibet, a Chinese province. You mention misplaced Tibetians yet make no mention of the American Indians who have had 99.999% of their land stolen? When is the US Gov't going to return the American Indians land? I am sure the American Indians haven't forgoten Wounded Knee or the trail of tears.

I had better Sichuan food in an alley than I will every get any resaurant in the US.

We had stirfried:

bitter melon

shreded pork with jalepino peppers

liver and kidneys with vegetables

smoked pork belly w/ peppers

seasoned eggplant

chinese lettece w/ wood ear and two other dishes I can't remember the name.

I pooped before I left and contrary to what you might have heard I haven't seen anyone defecating or urinating "on the side of the road."

You, obviously, don't know what you are missing.

Oh, we went to see the Earthquake epicenter yesterday and it seems they have rebuilt everything including the hydro electric plant, road way tunnels through the mountain, housing , the aluminum smelting facility owned by a western company, The electrical grid which supppies much of the region.

What has congress done for you lately, other than steal and ruin your birthright?

I am tired of yelling "the sky is falling".  I wish all the gun bugs would start shooting legitimate targets, stay away from schools and start shooting the people who truely deserve it. I public has been so dumbed down by our education system I don't have much hope. I am thankful for my shitty civil servant job, my student loan payment sarc/, and spend my money on plane tickets to get the heck out of the US as often as possible.

I think US foriegn policy, over the last ten years, has seriously depleted our resources and I don't think the Pentagon has it in them to launch another war of agression. Last time I checked we are broke.

This piece is much more interesting for what it leaves out, than what it includes...

as with all Bloombergery, it is remorselessly derivative, factually challenged, opportunistic, and slanted towards an unstated agenda...

it therefore reads, to the more initiated, like a third-rate Chinese opera. The "Eight Immortals, " of course, were Ming Dynasty deity types, most famously encountered on their way to the Conference of the Magical Peach. The transposition into the modern Party equivalents is a shameless rip off which goes unattributed, like all Bloombergs' "journalism"...

the inclusion of Son is controversial, to say the least...a more trenchant case would be made of the eighth as being descended from the sorely missing Chou En Lai...his wife, Deng Yingchao, is more properly accorded the place of the '8th'...in some accounts.

Chou and his wife did not have any children of their own, but adopted the orphaned children of other party luminaries. Most famously, Li Peng, who advocated harsh measures against the Tiananmen  protestors, contrary to Deng, and would fall from grace because of it.  But he was Premier for 11 years, and second only to Jiang Zemin till 2002, directly involved, therefore, in the most vibrant phase of China's period of explosive growth ...there is no doubt that his image will, like Dengs', eventually experience resusitation, and his proteges prosper with it.

Chou's wife, by the by, Chairwoman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from 83 to 88, was born near Nanning, and was largely responsible for the abolition of foot binding in China. My very first day in China involved a very pleasant interlude in Nanning, spent in the company of  two young Sichuan women  who, in answering my many questions about the incredible 'modernity' of the country I was viewing for the first time, agreed with me that Deng had been instrumental in bringing China back from the disaster of Mao; but when I raised the subject of Chou, I could literally feel the wave of emotion that floated in the room...

Chou was as smooth and polished as any Ming Dynasty scribe himself...truly a throwback to another time...though orthodox "communist," on the surface, his sincere desire for the welfare of his people, and canny merchant sensibilities* counterbalanced, to some degree, Mao's insane demagogery, and provided the route by which Deng et al could gradually right the ship of state...his legacy is, through his political heirs, largely unclouded by the corruption of the party princelings, and awaits a time in the future to fully unveil itself...in the meanwhile, I suspect that Deng Yingchao's legacy has unveiled itself millions-fold, in the burgeoning billions of China's feminine gender, who I found to be smart, sexy, and self-possessed, to a degree now totally absent from the hollowed out simulacra of womenfolk that the West is left with, after nearly a century of Fabian Society\Frankfurt School\Tavistock style 'deconstruction' of the feminine gender.

*Vladimir Myasnikov, a leading Soviet China analyst, recounts that Chou once told the Soviet leaders that, "While you build metallurgical facilities and electric power plants in places like India, we will conquer the world with towels and enamel kitchenware." Never was a more accurate prediction uttered!

Don't worry yourself...

your kids will get it!

Or not. In which case, they can probably look forward to a life of hauling visiting China tourists around Central Park in a modified(for Labor Dept concerns*) version of a two wheeled cooly contraption that will provide just the right touch of romanticism, once the inevitable banning of perfectly safe horse carriage operators occurs in the land of political correctness and competitive labor costing initiatives.

*note- renumerative package will not such barbaric relics as medical coverage in case of hernia, nor pension...indexed or otherwise!

China has around 40 automobiles per 1,000 persons. It will always be a backwater.
