Obama Grants Pay Increase For Members Of Congress, Federal Workers In Executive Order
When it comes to US austerity, a very sensitive topic as framed best by the "spending cuts" portion in the Fiscal Cliff debate, the ideas range from the surreal to the outright idiotic: as an example in the most recent Obama proposal spending would be "reduced" in the form of $290 billion in interest savings - not an actual spending reduction, but a hope and a prayer that because rates are lower, the government will "save" money with rates continuing to be lower (something which immediately causes a #Ref! explosion for anyone not using government math), $130 billion in savings that would come from once again rejiggering the definition of 'inflation', as well as "savings" from not funding extra defense spending because the US is not engaged in a pro forma war. Like we said: surreal and idiotic, or in other words, no actual real cuts to spending. Yet even as the nation is gripped by the melodrama of fake spending cuts offset by the threat to tax millionaires more (all of whom will merely find more creative and effective ways to hide their wealth and income offshore), spending increases are all too real, such as last night's order by Obama's just issued an executive order to end the pay freeze for federal employees, which is the equivalent of a wage increase. A truly deserved rise in wages for a job well done by the most dysfunctional Congress America has ever seen.
Among the workers to receive a pay increase is Vice President Job Biden. As the Weekly Standard reports, citing disclosure forms, Biden made $225,521 last year and after the pay increase, he'll now make $231,900 per year. More: "Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase." Somehow we have the feeling that Congress will be quite united behind this "order", just as the Senate was very united yesterday in its decision to continue spying on America's citizens.

"A new executive order has been issued providing for a new pay schedule beginning 'on the first day of the first applicable pay period beginning after March 27, 2013,'" reports FedSmith.com. "The pay raise will generally be about 1/2 of 1%."
Jeryl Bier points to an example of the pay increase for average government executives:
"Not much of an increase, but an increase all the same," Bier notes.
And the timing isn't great either: Just as President Obama and Congress try to avert going over the "fiscal cliff," he doles out pay increases to federal workers.
UPDATE: According to a senior Republican congressional aide who has reviewed the executive order and consulted with the Congressional Budget Office, Obama's pay raise will cost $11 billion. "The CBO told us that the President’s pay raise for federal workers will cost $11 billion over ten years," says the aide.
The aide explains, "On the cost-estimate, CBO says the (discretionary) cost of the .5% pay-hike the President is calling for in the Exec Order – relative to a freeze – is about $500m in FY 2013 and $11 billion over the ten years from FY 13 - FY 22. The reason why the FY ’13 savings is only $500 million is because the pay hike as proposed by the President’s Exec Order would not go into effect until April 1st, 2013 - when the current CR expires. So it only covers half the fiscal year. The annualized cost of the pay hike is about $1 billion/year."

All of these government employees get a fantastic pension and a nice medical package after retirement.
Actually current federal employee's retirement sucks (FERS). It is one percent per year of service times the average of your high three years of service. So say you work 30 years and average 80,000 for your highest three years, you get 24,000 per year which isn't enough to live on. And there is NO medical "package". You can continue paying monthly for your medical insurance...
What you are reffering to are some state pensions (California, Illinios, etc...) that the unions have bardered up grand pension programs...
In Canadian Federal Civil Service it's 75% of your best five years over 35 years. Salary ranges are broad. Most start over 45k a year though.
For Canadian Military it's 75% of your best 25 years. A Major for instance makes 123-145k per year, and Majors are as rare as broken glass in a Jersey parking lot in Ottawa. Promotion is automatic on the officer end per signed contract. Some of the lousiest shots and fattest bodies I've ever met in my life have bars and stars. Soft is a good description. Hard to aim a gun with a doughnut in hand.
Non-comms get the same deal, 25 years/best five/75%, but most are paid in poverty, training, housing, death and lip service.
So if anyone wants to know why the pension checks are going to be bouncing in Canada soon, there's the reason. Take every civil servant still walking the good green earth in Canada triple it and you've got the real cost of pensions. Just on the federal level. This doesn't include teachers, provincial or municipal which are all seperate systems under funded by around one hundred of trillion dollars collectively.

Strange that many bemoan more the Congressional public pay than the much greater private rewards which coincide and follow public political tenure.
Perhaps it is because we understand we as citizens are collectively charged for the public salary.
And do not understand how we also wind up paying for the much greater private sector rewards for Congresspersons who self-servingly direct funds and approve laws benefiting relatives and associates, or are subsequently employed as lobbyists, consultants, or sit on boards of directors.
Should we conclude that the chief result of eliminating Congressional public pay altogether would be to suppress public outrage? Many if not all Congresspersons would be delighted at such a result, and find salary elimination to be of little consequence, since most are already millionaires or will soon become ones.
Well, we must suppose, at least for now, focusing on the public pay helps shift attention away from the much greater private remunerations.

I read about the millions she spent on vacations during his first term. I remember a time when I was a little boy when my father told me that the POTUS had to pay the WH staff out of his pay. We have (in essence) a VAT now in America, its just not called a VAT, in addition to all other taxes. At every stop in the production chain any item is taxed...that is a VAT...with the true price born by the end user/buyer, as always. I defy anyone to name for me the business that is not taxed on a good or service...from milking a cow to trucking the bulk milk to the bottling plant to trucking it to the grocer to selling it to you.
They are very clever in it's promotion.

Paying Congressmen and civil servants a salary is a bit counter-intuitive. Flat salaries are for low-skill occupations that don't benefit from personal excellence; the federal government should take a clue from private enterprise and move to a performance-based compensation system involving bonuses. This, after all, is largely responsible for American achievements in the world of finance—where would Wall Street be today without the bonus incentives that motivated our financiers to allocate capital prudently a decade ago? Perhaps Obama could hire consultants from AIG, Bank of America, and other large enterprises to lend an expert hand in deploying such a bonus system across the federal government.
It won't take long for the motivation to take hold, and you'll be thrilled to hear that extra sense of urgency in your civil servants' earnest greeting "Hello, we're from the Government, and we're here to help."
Consider the savings that could be realized if we outsourced Congressional duties to India.
